The more I learn about Dune, the more I am convinced that Frank Herbert is one of the greatest writers in history. It’s even more impressive when you consider he basically invented modern science fiction.
I don't think so. The prose is often jejune and clumsy. He is great at building up political tension with lots of people and factions second-guessing one another, but he has no sense of combat and once conflicts come to a head, things are abruptly halted by some lazy deus ex machina.
Hilariously, Herbert wrote an article on sand dunes when he was a science writer, and his editor said "Who's interested in sand dunes? and never published it.
I mean sand dunes are the least entertaining thing in the books what’s interesting is what humans are doing in the sand dunes so they were still right 😆.

What’s terrifying to me is how long 34,000 years feels in the Dune universe. And yet we know humans have existed probably 200,000 years longer than that; all of that history is lost to us. And even our existence is a blink compared to what has come before. Humans were not meant to know these things, but we know nonetheless. The dark void of the past yawns behind.
Imagine how many lives, stories, and generations lie within these 34,000 years? You could probably create a thousand books based off these 34,000 years.
the son of the author is doing just that brian herbert has done 12 books around the 6 orignals. a lot of prequels also a book in between every original book and also dune 7 and 8 most of them SUCK. not all of them thoguht the first 3 books he made are actually good and a welcome adition to the original saga. they cover the life of leto 1 at full from young all the way to the birth of paul . the ones of The Butlerian Jihad are terrible and dune 7 and 8 deserve fire.
@@lucaskp16 Oh come on, 7 and 8 were not actually bad. The problem with those books are just that if you are used to the style of Frank himself you have problems with Anderson and Herberts son. I read the original books and thought they are very exotic because the emphasis on philosophy from Frank is extraordinary big, his son wrote like most scifi stories are today: direct and very plastic. But to say the writing of Herberts son is bad just gives Dune fans the image of ultra closeminded fanatics.
I’ve been told many times that I’m not a “true” Dune fan, all because I also enjoy what Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson have written. They have expanded the Dune universe perfectly in my opinion, Norma Cenva is my favourite character. Love Dune since I was a child and I read it every year.
Humanity on earth (as modern humans) has been alive from 100 000. For example, 40 000 years ago humans arrived in Europe. The Pyramids were built 5000 years ago. The foundation of Athens was 3500 years ago and that of rome 2750 years ago with its subsequent fall 1500 years ago. Then the discovery of America happened 630 years ago and the American colonies where founded 350 years ago. WW II was just 80 years ago.
I believe we're not creating when we're imagine. We're seeing it in our mind. We see other realities, our ignorance makes us think that we are creating those stories and images in our mind. Those images are real. We can access to those places through our mind.

Per this video, all life on Terra was destroyed, then it was reseeded and turned into a nature preserve. Theoretically later it’s location was lost so possibly some people moved onto it later not realizing or caring where they were.
That may happen IRL eventually. First as humanity expands into the solar system - settling on terraformed Mars and Venus (again, not a guarantee, but a potentiality), living by the millions in the Asteroid and Kuiper Belts as well as the Oort Cloud, and perhaps in their billions on space habitats like O'Neill Cylinders. Earth would still be the centre of humanity of course, but that would be the beginning. If/when we leave the solar system and begin voyages into the "nearby" star systems, we will see millions/billions more leave - whether motivated by scientific/economic reasons or simply for the sake of land and exploration. But eventually Earth would become more of a symbolic centre than anything, and likely the vast majority of people would eventually live outside of it. I think it would be quite nice though - to imagine a future where humanity has colonised 10 star systems and spans tens, if not hundreds, of billions of people, with Earth at the centre with a remaining core population of like 2 billion just chilling

Reading the Dune books again after forty years. Such a different perspective on them at 62 years of age compared to the naive 22 year old I used to be.
It's fun to try to convert into crude approximations of our calendar. If Rome fell in 16400 BG and we take that to be 400 AD, then we start colonizing solar system in 2700 AD, and have Jihad (200 years before Guild) and Guild at about 16600 and 16800 AD. Events of first volume of Dune about 10,100 years later at 26,900 AD. Give or take a few centuries...
After watching the 2021 film and going on a Dune marathon on your channel, I realize the latest film is only a grain of spice in a vast desert planet of source material. I will be overjoyed the day The God Emperor makes it onto the big screen. I just hope they invest the time and budget needed to properly adapt something of this magnitude.
No movie will ever do these books justice. It needs to be turned into an Anime. The Japanese are bold enough to animate all of the absurd and wild ideas into images.
@@MRony When AI can create live action movies from source material we'll likely have these books adapted to tv shows that look like the best high budget movies every episode. AI can already create pictures and 1 minute video with promps and recreate voices and faces, also fill in story and create story. So I would think it's safe to assume being generous as in ignoring the exponential increase in development but a slow one in 15-20 years we'll have this for sure if not in 5-10. Lots of old tv shows will be easily revived with AI re-creating the old characters and their voices and perhaps the plot of the show itself soon enough and it will be cheap because it will only be royalties for the estates of the people, no paying for actors or special effects or sets or anything and studios will likely already own the rights to the IP so won't even have to pay for that. We are about to enter into the golden age of media. I just hope soon enough we'll have the new next form of it for at home like actual good advanced AR/VR in 3D.
I love how it ends on a positive note: Despite all the wars, persecution, intrigue and destruction, in the end humanity spread far and wide, safe from annihilation for as long as the universe itself persists...

My take is that what Leto did was force humanity to brake off the shackles of the Imperium and the stagnation it represented but lets not forget human nature and i believe everything will come back in a circle. Eventually new Empires , kingdoms will be created , new tech , new motives , new wars etc etc so as to say life goes on.

What I enjoy the most from dune is the fact that an AI revolution happened like 10,000 years before we even start the book and the prohibition of it. Is just as if F. Herbert wanted to tell us how vast and incredible our mind is how much we can accomplish just by challenging us. Also the fact that politics is so important in a universe that’s so vast is quite amazing.
@@darknessincarnate138 I like that there's no aliens in dune. Because it confirms my bias and the truth that man alone among God's children has been made in his image with the gift of his spirit and mind.

It’s entirely possible none of the “empires” until the “current” one were actually empires. “Seat of Imperial Power” in the article seems to refer to broad hegemony rather than actually being an empire. The Cold War is referred too as a “conflict between House Washington and House Steel” (America and Soviet Russia, Stalin means “Man of Steel”) after “House Windsor” (England) loses their Imperium. The in-universe writers of the encyclopedia are interpreting the past through their own present (like historians always do). Anyway. Everyone read the encyclopedia. It’s amazing.
Now "House Mao" is superceding "House Washington" in every single way as we enter a multipolar world order, with the ideologists of the latter denying their own death rattle, lashing out in a desperate attempt to preserve it's hegemony.

This is so good, i always come back to Dune for inspiration when i want to imagine something completely vast and fictional. It feels so real and i can’t help but feel like Frank Herbert’s sprawling lore is the stuff myths and legends are made of. Fantastic work again
Want to really contextualize this in an even more mind crushing perspective? The human species is still older than this timeline, and the dinosaurs vanished 1900 times longer ago than this duration. The dinosaurs lived for over 4000 times this duration. It is entirely conceivable a civilization could rise and vanish to the stars in the time between the dinosaurs and the rise of our own. Plug that back into the context of the earth being set aside as a nature preserve and then lost. Is Dune really the saga of our lost ancestors?

8:54 'No single human could catalogue all of humanity at this point and no one can say what each of the individual experiences might entail'. Frank Herbert in all his wisdom could never have envisioned the rise of social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. Archaeologists thousands of years in the future will have a near complete record of pretty much the entire human civilization during the early days of the 21st century.
If you think that data will last for ever you are wrong. And how it plays out.
Your universe is as large as you need it to be to contain the stories written in it, be they movies, books or whatever. Hence the Warhammer 40k universe makes even the Dune one look small and underdeveloped, despite much in it that is inherently absurd. It also helps when the creativity of contributors isn't too crippled by the suits' love of copyright law and the fans' love of 'canon'.
As much as I love these books and have read them over and over, I have never really done a proper timeline of the history. I am really happy that you did this ...it's very informative.
I have just started to get into the Dune universe and the biggest problem I have had is video's being way way to long. This was perfect overall. Went into key times and important events. If I want to know more about a specific piece I can research it specifically and not just get 20 or 30 minutes of stuff that turns me off to wanting to learn more about this great universe that is Dune! Thank You, great video!
Every time there is mention of The Guild, I know Frank Herbert’s meant “The Lollipop Guild”. It is a little known fact bur the Dune Universe Intersects with the Wizard of Oz universe and “The Lollipop Guild” has performed experiments utilizing the human mind’s ability to teleport to different places and dimensions when exposed to psychedelics for millennia. Many thousands of years after the events depicted in the movie and when they had perfected the technique, they decided to bring their activities out of the shadows; at that time the name was simply shortened to “The Guild”, as there were no humans who remembered what a “lollipop” actually was.
@Trevor Tammen Dune focuses on things different from 40k. also Dune its at the core a warning about charismatic leaders and the damage cult of personality can create. also unlike 40k ecology is a central piece of Dune, showing you how delicate the envoriment balance can be and how devastating the consecuenses can be of messing with it. 40k is more action focused while dune in the first book skips the final battle to only show you the preparation and the aftermath, because the battle itself is not relevant.
@Trevor Tammen Because Dune's narrative goal is not action. The goal is the message and themes of the books. The entire story is to deliver an idea and for you to think about the idea presented. It's intention is to not distract you with wars and battles, but to show you the important stuff (which is the political intrigue, which are the actions of people who started these wars and battles, but then sit comfortably on their thrones.)
I just love listening to stuff like this, I only read a handful of the books not so long ago and was absolutely fascinated by the Dune universe. IRL It was Tesla who discovered the Holtzman effect. It was described as a line of an Iron rod. In normal communication you hit the rod from the side so it creates a wave, which takes time to reach the other end of the rod. The way I handle Brian's timeline's differences from the Encyclopedia is to look at how much we actually know about our own ancient cultures and how much we are finding out where somethings we thought were true don't match up with records more recently brought to light. Time allows for the distortion of facts through convenience. And we have only about 5000 years between us and earliest records, Dune has twice that between the Jihad and Paul.
The Dune Encyclopedia time-line specifies a date for (I am writing from memory as I cannot find my copy) "The Battle of England Channel" (or something to that effect) on Terra. This most certainly refers to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada by England in 1588 A.D. Using this date as a cross reference with the A.G. date given in the timeline, we can then put an exact year date to the the Dune Universe. I first did this when I first read the Dune Encyclopedia years ago. If I can locate my edition, I will do so again and post.
I find it hard to believe in all that time with instant travel across the universe that we hadn't discovered another sentient species. Though I suppose with all the mutations, genetic engineering and evolution throughout countless worlds some might seem like alien civilizations by that time.

I don't think so. The prose is often jejune and clumsy. He is great at building up political tension with lots of people and factions second-guessing one another, but he has no sense of combat and once conflicts come to a head, things are abruptly halted by some lazy deus ex machina.
Star Wars for adults.
And to think that his manuscript was rejected 22-23 times.
He is, he basically mainstreamed sci fi and inspired many universes such as Star Wars and Warhammer 40,000.

And even our existence is a blink compared to what has come before. Humans were not meant to know these things, but we know nonetheless. The dark void of the past yawns behind.

I just cannot accept the prequels into my understanding of dune. The dune original series is where it's at for me
@@lucaskp16 Oh come on, 7 and 8 were not actually bad.

In all this time i like to imagine there are a handful of normal people still living on earth, thankful for the peace and quiet.
They wouldn't be living on Earth anymore. In one of the prequels, Earth got atom bombed so hard that it became a dead, lifeless ball.

There are comic books that make Star Wars look like baby's first crayon painting.
Your universe is as large as you need it to be to contain the stories written in it, be they movies, books or whatever.
This is the theory that makes the most sense to me

@@christopherthrobbin7951 and human history is less impressive when you realize it's all reskined drama scenarios
@Trevor Tammen Because Dune's narrative goal is not action. The goal is the message and themes of the books. The entire story is to deliver an idea and for you to think about the idea presented. I remember parts of Dune, saw the original movie and then much later, read the book for myself. I just ran across your Vids and you have opened a whole new world of Dune for me. I will be going back to the original book for another read and will keep you as a subscribed You Tube.....Never mind the Correctors and their tireless nit picking. A nit is a tiny bug and therefore is insignificant. Keep going with all the Beautiful Nerdiness. My Dado was the best at Nerdiness and thanks for giving me back those memories. Love ya....
So is Warhammer 40K just like one big Dune fanfic?
How dare you think such heresy! BLAM
Sooo much meth... Sooo much fun/paint
Where is my bolter?
So many god emperors
Its safe to say 40k has been heavily inspired by Dune. But i personally feel like 40k is a giant passionate melting pot of bolters, chaos and a whole lot of heresy.
30,000 years and they never found a single alien :(
what's a sand worm?
@William Leonard No, no they did not.
William Leonard no, the Freman’s religion led them to follow Paul and go jihadi in the universe. They also had the Orange Catholic Bible to keep nobles comforted.
Why would they ?
Do you know the limits of human potential?
Sandworm: "am i a joke to you ?"
Me as a 40k fan, i am allways amused how much 40k was "inspired" by dune.
How's the Reverend Mother?
She's wild, man.
She's a Reverned Mother! (such bad spelling on the video!)
Love that you’ve got Jodorowsky's Dune references in your images. ❤️
Before I even finish watching let me say, you are a madman. Thank you for that.
Time to watch.
Thanks so much for this.
Thanks for serving lord leto II god emperor of humanity for many many years
Good thing about quarantine, I have been able to watch all his Dune videos.
This needs to be picked up by CD project red after cyberpunk
Nobody can pick this up bro
@@clack185 ok
Dune was an amazing strategy game, inspired Red Alert among others
Lol this didn't age well
@@beaver6d9 haha indeed. Honestly I think CPDR's writers can handle it, or at least they're one of the best options, but under this management I hope they don't get their hands on this IP.
One of the greatest science-fantasy epics EVER.

You have maybe the greatest channel ever for in-depth analysis of great books/shows love it man
This video was incredibly helpful for my understanding about the Dune Universe. I’m right now reading the 6th book of the saga and a few questions were still in my mind about how humanity left earth and how the Imperium was born. It was amazing seeing the full development of things I read on the last 5 books. Thank a lot!
Varion Atreides, left the imperium to go into deep space, but the books never said where he went or when he died, if he died!
I would like to find out hat really happened to him!
Just make something up. It's likely better than what KJA/BH would write. After all, they just made shit up and pretended it was based on what I suspect are nonexistent notes.
I've just discovered your channel recently and I've been missing out, it's amazing!
My God, you're a huge nerd. I love it!
I live in the California desert. I really appreciated the Dune trilogy when I read it because of where I now live.
Absolutely fantastic video. Dune is a masterpiece of writing and imagination and I love anything related to it. Keep up the great work!
Absolutely brilliant collection of Dune lore and knowledge!!! As a fan of Dune since I was in elementary school (I'm 34 now haha) I truly appreciate all you do brother!!!
Absolutely delightful video thank you very much. Dune has always been my SciFi first love and I love the lore and history of it
Great video, I haven't read the books yet but I'm fascinated with the lore.
I LIVED in the Dune universe from HS into College reading Dune-2-Chapterhouse Dune AS THEY WERE BEING PUBLISHED from God Emperor onward(late 70's into 80s')
But for peeps these days TLDR to just quick overview and get visuals, read WIKIAs too, then I'd say rent/torrent/buy the Lynch 'Dune' for the esoteric LSD dreamy feel that the books have but it doesn't follow the books well, then jump into the 2nd Syfy Dune movie 'Children of Dune' that follows 80% of the DuneMessiah/CoD story some characters get a slight different arc but is good for the era cgi and young James McAvoy(LetoII) being very regal royal smart and 'super' with the young actress matching him great as Ghanima. my CoD playlist - ** ua-cam.com/play/PLC34E5CF002224561.html
Id like to think. That not alot of people watched this when he dropped it. And then BOOM. Dune fan wave after i had no idea what i was gonna be watching but loved every second. I NEED THE LORE
Many decades ago when I was young. Around 11 - 12 I became a fan f reading for enjoyment rather than via neccessity of reading textbooks and assigned books. Some of those books/classics should be read by all. Dune wrapped me up and pulled me in. I couldn't get enough. Same with LOTR.
Finally we will see DUNE movie!! Best sci fi ever.. Not one of those marcek disney starwars bullshit
Viewing this video prior to watching the upcoming 2020 version of the Dune film will add greatly to the appreciation of the story. Videos like this got me hooked on this channel and greatly expanded my sci-fi knowledge!
I wish you made an axis to give a visual representation of the timeline.
I was expecting that too!
Love coming back here and hearing the lore! Quinn you are amazing!
Great video! I am just getting into Dune and videos like yours help me quite a bit
"All rebels are closeted politicians." -God Emperor Leto II/III
Not much said about the Machine Empire-The Titans and the rebellion against the first Empire
that's because Quinn quotes the Dune Encyclopedia, despite it not being canon. A fact he continues to ignore.
I'm too impatient for the books, seen the movies, & still this is far more entertaining than either. I realize my patience needs work.
I read the novels in order of publication. So it took me decades..... You might want to start reading the novels in chronological order, so starting with the prequels The Butlerian Jihad, The Machine Crusade and The Battle of Corrin; and then Mentats of Dune, Sisters of Dune and Navigators of Dune; and even MORE prequels before you arrive at the main book itself, Dune... and there are also short stories.
I'd like to know more about the source of the worms, where the sandtrout were brought from. But then, I need more time to explore your channel.

A drawing from the original Dune movie by Alejandro Jodorowsky.
I watched Jodorowsky's Dune recently.
It would have been a wild ride that is for sure.
i swear to god if we could have movies that go this far back i will fkn love life so much more
IRL It was Tesla who discovered the Holtzman effect.
It was described as a line of an Iron rod.
In normal communication you hit the rod from the side so it creates a wave, which takes time to reach the other end of the rod.
"The Holtzman effect" you hits the end of the rod, and the effect on the other side
is instant.
For more look in to Eric Dollard presentations.
I’m halfway through the first book and this is just the info I needed!
considering it spoils a shitton it probably isnt'
@@gotohemp I've already been spoiled. I know some people don't mind spoilers, I do, but I wouldn't have started reading in the first place if not for the book guides. So it is what it is.
@@fifthofascalante7311 that's wonderful because you enjoy the book's story alot and you are not lost when you are reading the novel.
You always do an amazing job with the dune videos I wish I had the funds to help you on patreon
As usual very informative and enjoyable. Great work.
34,000 years? Just a blink in the lifetime of the universe.
@@dinosaurcj Read almost anything by Larry Niven for good, that is, creative alien invention. Particularly outstanding is the novel "The Mote in God's Eye"
It's scarier in a way to think that we are the only sentient species
How would adding aliens to the Dune universe be any more interesting than the conflict and intrigue Herbert gave us between humans? There's no shortage of other good scifi if it's aliens you want but in this case it would only serve to water down the magnificent universe Herbert made.
Space is big
