Kingdom Death: Monster is a fully cooperative tabletop hobby game experience. Set in a unique nightmarish world devoid of most natural resources, you control a settlement at the dawn of its existence. Fight monsters, craft weapons and gear, and develop your settlement to ensure your survival from generation to generation.
Campaign System
Embark alone or with up to 3 friends (5 with game variant) on a 5-30-lantern-year campaign, with each year consisting of a cycle of hunt, showdown, and settlement phases. The settlement phase is an intricate civilization building game in which you spend very limited resources to build buildings, research new technologies, train your warriors, and set up your strategy for survival. During the hunt, you'll encounter a series of stories in a "choose your own adventure" style journey through various events and encounters. Finally, when you meet the monster you're pursuing, you'll engage it in an a massive arena-style battle where only one party is going to survive. If your party lives, you'll be able to bring the spoils back home to use in expanding your settlement.
Monster AI System
Each of the 7 monsters included are controlled by their own pair of decks that scale to 3 levels of difficulty (except for the final encounter, which has only 1 level and it's HARD!). Every encounter, even with the same monster, is highly variable and no two showdowns will resolve the same way. Players will have to plan their gear and keep their minds sharp to prevail.
Gear System
In Kingdom Death: Monster, survivors will craft gear from resources earned from defeating monsters or found on their hunt. Each survivor has a 3x3 gear grid. Selection and arrangement of your gear cards is critical, as many provided bonuses and activate special rules when aligned correctly.
Story Event System
40+ Story Events plus over 100 hunt encounters will shape and guide your campaign. Story Events detail important evolutions in your civilization, introduce new monsters, and provide rich detail for your campaign. Some will trigger automatically as you progress through the campaign, but most will be entirely based on choices players make.
Story Events cover everything from setting up and fighting a monster to key events that happen within the overall story. Some are triggered directly from the timeline and others from choices you make in game.

"But losing everything makes me worry!" Exactly. The fact that some choices can lead to this snowball of your settlement slowly destroying itself makes for part of the narrative; a memory about that settlement that will set it apart from all your other settlements. Also, my friend and I like writing how the survivor died on the back of their survivor sheet (as well as any amazing exploits they accomplished in their life), and then just erasing everything on the front for use with a new survivor. So each survivor sheet contains a graveyard of heroes on the back. I think the mystery around the lore is also great, because it creates this headcanon in each gaming group. When these different groups come together and talk about the game, there is usually some overlap, but I've noticed each group views some of the ambiguities a little differently, and I think that perfectly reflects these little lost settlements in the dark, separated from one another, clueless about the dark world they live in.
Though if you're doing poorly early, going graves + protect the young makes repopulating almost trivial
I like this idea of writing the feats of the survivors on the back of their sheet in memory and their deaths. I think Jesse and I will implement this :)

She is exactly where you want a new player to be after the prologue interested, full of questions, and has problems with things that will be fixed in time...now for Alex.

Great review. Good blend. It gives the feeling of someone really experienced in this style of game & someone who is learning & experiencing this style of game. Definitely helps to decide if it is right for your gaming group.
For me, there is KDM and there are the other games.

It should also be said that a lot of the lore is out there, its in the encounters, the items, the events. Its seeded throughout the game and expansions to be found. Maybe not found on your first playthrough, but multiple will help you get more puzzle pieces.

Alex uploads a video the day I sit down playing zombicide black plague. After not getting it to tge table for a while. You upload a video of KDM a day after I travel to continue a campaign of KDM. Well.. im just gonna have to get these to the table mpoe often with the hopes that the uploads keep dropping for those two board games.
Sounds like Awaken Realms will be dropping off some more ISS Vangaurd prototypes in September. Hope you and Alex get one again. Always keep going back and watching them. Fun gameplay, pure entertainment if you ask me.

First game of KDM, we were wiped out in a night of play, at the first hiccup due to plague and traitor events. Second game we cleared the original campaign. It's a game I enjoy, but won't go out of my way to play.
For me the cutthroat is fine and the high randomness is fine. Together though, makes it really brutal sometimes.
I can see the brutality already. But I might enjoy that…

Can you imagine my best friend got kdm.. whe played roughly 43h in 3 week .. 24.40h in one week end.. yes a kdm week-end only, sleeping, eat and kdm only .. it true kingdom death monster is the best . Love it and I'm proud and thankfull of my best friend Charles to share his passion... hooo man now I want to play .. need to continu the Journey , Charles come back !!!!! That Because my friend got kdm he live 3h away. Ok. He come over and the week after I needing to play soo I drove 3hr !!! Love kdm. Now I need my own kingdom death monster..

As someone who has played a bunch of both games (I'm a tester on ATO)...from my personal perspective it does improve on the KDM experience. Although, it adds a bunch of other new elements that KDM doesn't have so those could be new struggle points for people that KDM doesn't have to deal with. ATO is a bigger game than KDM in terms of scope so be forewarned!
@@anthonynelson8397 does ATO scratch the same itch as KDM? I really want KDM but paying the money feels almost irresponsible.
@@catfisht Yes, it does. The crafting and Argo (city) management/building works differently but it still serves a similar purpose. The combat will be familiar and brutal enough to easily pull you in.
I enjoy ATO more than KDM but ATO is certainly standing on the shoulders of what KDM established.
The big thing you'll want to consider is do you like ATOs theme. KDM is far more dark, gloomy, and body horror. ATO is far more greek/roman/spartan + plus a little bit of Attack On Titan thrown in there. Both are great experiences and I prefer ATO because I don't care as much for the KDM art direction.
@@anthonynelson8397 thank you for the detailed response! I think you're right about the importance of theme and it's true that dark fantasy is much more appealing to me than ATO although ATO is undeniably cool (I like your point about a bit of attack on titan). Will have to keep researching.

Super weird, I swore Shira played KDM on the Patreon content. The KDM content didn't show on my phone this morning, but now it's on my comp, and she is not in the KDM vids.......I thought you guys played it, recorded it earlier and just now uploaded her reaction.....The Phoenix and Slenderman make survivors forget things, so I thought something like that was a foot, but turns out just with me, Slendy put that in my mind or I am in another timeline from the Phoenix, haha

Good video but the dude shouldn't wear black t shirts. With his complexion it makes him look washed out. Dress more like the Castles of Burgundy board (I think you know what I mean) and your looks will come out more. Pro tip.
