First off, love your work and your unique conversations! I'm a human, on level 56. I had unlocked the Cancer anti-perk on level 51. But after gaining perks on the guitar and handwriting quests, (because chemo slows momentum....alot, and it was all I could do), I leveled up, and it must have negated the Cancer anti-perk, because I must have misplaced it on my journeys. I still level up, and my new perk is waking up....every day.......which I thoroughly enjoy, along with your videos. (Hope my eyes were open on the picture......) Peace!

I am on *immunosuppressants* this makes me better and worse.
I think we all have a certain amount of points to spec at the beginning of our save and then we have to use them and swap them around during main storyline. Each quest requires different skills to be spec'd up but you only have the same number of points you had at the beginning so you have to swap them around. Hence, this is why you get buff the wisdom attribute as you age but you have to use the points from the physical attributes you had as a youth

You make good art. I like you lots.
I'm quite old so my anti-perks are many.
currently - gallstones and kidney stones. tooth issues are almost constant. painful joints. eyesight and hearing are getting worse daily (so soon I won't even be able to watch your video's or make art that I can see :( )
My advice - just don't get old. refuse. Also - even if your eyes dont work right, make art anyway.

For those with joint pain try eating gelatin like jello, gummy bears, gummy worms, or gelatin with zero sugar. Not plant-based gelatin, but animal-based gelatin. It gives your joints what they've been lacking. I have one or two small packs of gummy bears per week. It has helped me a lot with my spinal fusion surgery I had in 2000. My joints are more lubricated, stronger, and much less painful. I hope this helps one person and they pass this knowledge on to someone else.

Figuratively and literally. I am a poster-girl for what a life of stressful work can do to your body. But when I was young, we didn't know these things! Peter, you are such a joy! My biggest anti-perk is the crippling cramps I get where I used to have a gall bladder. My gall bladder used to be my anti-perk, but I upgraded to this Bonus Mystery Anti-Perk, so that's cool. I also occasionally enable the migraine anti-perk, so nice (???) to have that in common with you. I have reached level 43, and I'm guessing that means I'll be unlocking my menopause suite of anti-perks soon!! Still very much enjoying the game though. Keep well, have a beautiful weekend.

I've got an anti-perk for ya, Peter. I have a left above-knee amputation, so I only have one leg from the thigh down. I have a prosthetic leg, but I can't use it very well so I still have to use a walker to walk around. The circulation is bad in my right leg, too (which was the reason I lost my left leg), so I can't really walk more than about 150-200 feet at a time without my leg getting really painful. Of course, I'm an old man (66), so this was a long time coming.

He is autistic, has chronically dislocated his shoulder and has had two surgeries because of it, suffered from allergies so severely that his adenoids and tonsils had to be removed and had a brain tumor removed. The tumor triggered epileptic seizures and he is on medication for that. The seizures returned and so has the tumor. He'll be having another surgery this summer. He keeps on trucking. He has an A+ GPA, hates missing school and belongs to several clubs. Makes me realize my anti-perks aren't that bad.

Anti-perks would be considered drawbacks, I think. Sometimes they join in with the good perks, and go hand in hand; like hit harder, but you can't sprint, or reload faster, but you can't swap between your gear as fast and so on. Not so sure how it would translate to real life though. Thank you for another video, Mr. Peter, can't say how much joy your stuff has brought through the years.

ADHD for me has some perks, but is packed with anti-perks lmao. obviously there's the concentration thing, but it's mostly sensory stuff, fatigue, rejection sensitivity, and auditory processing stuff. Interestingly enough, the older I get the better I get at managing and finding solutions for some of the things, so that's neat!

Yeah - A feature of ADHD for me is that eye contact is on the verge of almost being painful to me. If I try the thing where you notice details about the person's eyes and face, I get too wrapped up in that and the discomfort, and I don't hear what they say. Total anti-perk. I also frequently run the risk of getting in trouble at work if I only have boring stuff to do, as I will just do literally anything else. I do have to say overall, I think ADHD is a perk for me though. A lot of the things I am uniquely good at kind of stem from it.

I'm slowly getting better at my ADHD as well. To tie it into drawing one of the things I get distracted with is if I'm in a classroom setting and listening, I usually draw random squares with a diamond pattern in them. I always wonder if other people do it but most of my other friends with it don't do it so I'm not sure.

Peter, love your videos, watching you draw is so satisfying and then your thoughtful ponderings always make me think. Thank you.
I'm 51 and three years ago started really worrying about my anti-perks. I started doing something about them. You know that expression, "fix one thing, break something else"? Well, I decided to try running, and in December, I thought I just tweaked my knee, and it was taking forever to heal. When I finally gave in and went to the doc, turns out my meniscus had collapsed in both knees and I was bone on bone.
The doc said, "we need to manage your pain until you can't wait any longer for a knee replacement." That made me weirdly determined to strengthen the muscles and tendons that support my knees so I can go as long as possible before knee replacement and *not* take any drugs. I think my liver would give out before my knees.
Three weeks later, after three *months* of agony, I've found that I'm responding incredibly well to the strength training and my pain is down to a 2 from the 7 to 8 all the time. I know I'll have to keep up these exercises for... well, as long as I want to be able to walk. So I'm developing a habit of getting physically stronger. Sometimes, an anti-perk can help us gain the strength to develop a perk, and that's beautiful.

My "antiperk" is a nerve disorder called HNPP, basically I am prone to paralysis in my nerves when there is too much/too consistent of a pressure on them. It isn't so bad right now (I'm still pretty young), mostly just kind of annoying at times, but it does unfortunately get worse with age.

Perks/Quirks, I think is what you were looking for. I came for the art and stayed for your interesting ramblings. A few years back I started getting headaches, literally, daily that lasted all day, until one day I threw up at work. Decided I needed to see a doctor because I needed stronger meds to get me through. I had an MRI done and turns out I had 4 brain aneurysms and would have died had it gone unchecked. 2 brain surgeries in 24 hours later, I survived. True story. If anyone has abnormal headaches... used to do gymnastics. 5th-11th grade. I had more injuries than I could count on both hands. I've had two separate times with a broken wrist, a broken dislocated ringfinger, sprained ankles, hyperextend elbows, fractured vertebrae, face plant on uneven bars leading to broken teeth = fake front teeth + I bit through my lip and had a concussion, and probably others in-between.
Next big thing was the bilateral shoulder subluxation issues which I did months of therapy on and would've needed bilateral shoulder surgery, which I wasn't gonna do because it only hurt when I tried to do gymnastics, but that forced me to quit and then middle of my my senior year I decided I should try to run at the Y and ended up with 8 months of sciatica and declining ability to walk lead me to having back surgery, at the age of 18. Not sure why I kept going back at it. Maybe gymnastics taught me how to have too much determination. What's life without a few regrets? At least I can say I used to be able to do backflips and learned alot about my abilities in the process. That's why I also wanted to be in the physical therapy business. They always mended me up and I was able to go back to it.Also I recently discovered the other day I can still do cartwheels and handstands so that's cool.
Perks, I am getting better every day with my knowledge of human muscular anatomy in my chosen profession of physical therapy assistant and try to practice drawing and painting every day I can.

Neuropathy in both legs. Some days it’s so painful I genuinely wish I couldn’t feel my body from belly button down. Spine and si joints full of arthritis, and spinal cord compression in my neck. Buuuut, apparently those aren’t the cause on my nerve pain, and you know shit’s whack when you’re told your chronic kidney stones are just a red herring and unrelated to everything else 🙄. I feel like I’m playing blackout on a bingo card of medical specialists. Internal, pain, PT, psych, ortho, nephro, neuro, and next up… rheumatology, yay!
I’m tired. It doesn’t help that my mental health has crumbled, with recent ADHD, PTSD, major depression, & anxiety diagnoses joining the party. I feel like a burden on my family, and I’ve only been going downhill for years… I’m at the cusp of losing my job because pain makes it so I can barely walk some days and I had a full-on burnout breakdown for two months. How can I be a good mother if we can’t afford to keep a roof over our heads because I can’t work, and wrack up medical bills chasing some mystery answer to what the hell is going on. I question my sanity regularly, thinking it’s got to be all in my head, but then something tangible like blood in my urine and Reynauds syndrome makes an appearance. I’m losing hope and so tired of being in constant pain and worry 🥺

I think the other thing about video games is that in most of them, your skills can't decrease if you don't practice them. You can give yourself perks in real life, but they are usually the kind of thing that takes a lot of learning, and then a lot of practice to keep the skill up. In most RPGs, you can only ever improve.

Turns out Neanderthals had bad arthritis. Archeology fascinates me. They’ve learned this stuff from skeletal remains of ancient people. Prior to the introduction of sugar (15th or 16th century maybe) people had pretty good teeth. And skeletal remans of prehistoric humans often show full sets of teeth in good condition. They didn’t eat crap…no MacDonald’s, no processed food, no Snickers (and that’s too bad, I have a weakness for Snickers). OK, that’s all I have.

    • @doc_sav
      @doc_sav 2 роки тому +1

Do they think Neanderthals were more prone to inflammation, or was it more from wear and tear due to hard living? You might not have the answer to that. I always am really interested in the physical differences between us an Neanderthals. Also, I found out not too long ago that impacted wisdom teeth were uncommon in the relatively recent past (few hundred years probably). Teeth crowding is a fairly new issue for humans, so it is crazy to think that this genetic flaw pretty much spread across the entire species.

Lots of things can go wrong with bodies. I've had way more than my fair share of anti-perks but a lot I've rehabilitated out of or found ways to compensate/accommodate/manage them. But if you think about how complicated our bodies are and all the amazing things they do, even when some things are going wrong they're still doing a lot of clever things really well. I try and remember that. I'm autistic too which is very much a mixture of perks/anti-perks with sometimes the same trait being either perk or anti-perk depending on context - eg sensitivity to sound can be an amazing experience with nice sounds or total torture if it's a bad sound. Life is interesting. I liked your little pep talk at the end! ☺

Most perks in real life comes from working really damn hard at something. Drawing, playing an instrument, singing, running, driving and every other things anyone works hard to either learn or master. Talent can only take anyone so far until it's time to do some serious grinding because truly true innate talent is extremely rare.
And the thing with life and its perks is that debuffs can happen without any kind of notice as in you might smudge your painting, play the wrong note, sing out of tune or bump something while driving.

I can't have peas and milk doesn't agree with stomach. I had same reaction with Lentils, last Winter I had Red Lentils soup and felt fine. I know what means by perks in rpgs, I play a lot when not doing creative projects the recent game I'm playing is Runefactory 5 it's a farming sim with rpg elements. I made a meal which caused my character to fall asleep due random status effects from mushrooms. I started drawing with brush pen and love the loose strokes. My special ability is mixed media with collage. I find crafting irl is better than in video games because more satisfying and have something to show for my efforts.

You have an awesome style, just discovered you yesterday, my doodles are interesting but usually don't end up being something that people can look at and say hey that is a machine of some futuristic design or whatever. So yes, love this stuff. As far as perks (buffs) and anti-perks (debuffs) go, you hit the nail on the head. A rich person may have charisma, never give up attitude or whatever. Then there is me, major curse, health issues, ADHD, and the list goes on, but has a few buffs also, like artistically inclined with art and musically inclined to guitar and other instruments, I also have the wild imagination buff, I can write the most interesting stories, so I get it, I totally get where you are coming from lol.

I've always been super nearsighted, which is both an antiperk and a perk. With my glasses off I basically have magnifying glasses for eyes, because I can see the smallest details. Around level 42 the antiperk of being farsighted as well kicked in, so that is just annoying as heck. Now my glasses are a compromise, and just frustrating. At least I can still count the hairs on a bug's eyeball. I think I am doing pretty good at keeping the antiperks at bay, but I guess the main one is that my family tends to die pretty young, so I only expect to make it to maybe level 75, if I am lucky.

Loved your encouraging outro verbiage. Thank you. I wonder why that kind of encouragement helps from perfect strangers. Hmm. Interesting. But somehow it does. I think the question, however, for those ‘over the hill’ is really what still works or what do we do well? To focus on the other is discouraging for us elders. Hahaha!
But here’s an encouragement when anti-perks seem to be piling up: For years I had the worst sinus issues that often turned into pneumonia. I prayed and prayed and prayed about it. Nothing seemed to budge on the issue no matter who prayed for me, just more antibiotics and more infections.
But then my husband began to have terrible hip issues and had to have an operation on a hip. Sad to say, the terrible manufacturers of the hip replacement part developed a MORE THAN FAULTY mechanism. So then he had to have three more operations on his hip in order to get most of the cobalt out of his hip area. On his fourth hip replacement on the same hip, they tested him for MRSA first before his operation by running a swab through his sinuses. It came out positive. (Funny, they never tested him with the other operations.)
Anyway, they put him on basically a triple antibiotic ointment in order to coat his nasal passages with it. After weeks of healing again, he noted his sinuses felt much better. He too had previously had serious sinus and pneumonia problems. He’d even had a pneumonia sho*, and it did nothing for him. A couple of times, he had antibiotic resistant pneumonia which was terrifying when he contracted diabetes, most likely a residual of the faulty hip part since no one in his family had diabetes. My respiratory problems were exacerbated by chronic asthma. His was not, thankfully.
Then I found out my mom had MRSA, too, and so did my sister. I started to get suspicious. And then my mom’s sinuses became better, as well, when she took the med for it because previously she, too, had previously had terrible bouts of sinus infections and pneumonia and even took the sho* for it. Of course, it hadn’t done much for her either. But now that they were both applying that triple antibiotic ointment just in their noses, they were no longer getting sinus infections that turned into pneumonia.
So I thought, huh. I think I’ll try the stuff and see. I took it as directed, and guess what? After 30 some years of suffering from pneumonia, even mycoplasma pneumonia that nearly killed me, the chest infections nearly stopped altogether and so did the sinus infections. And the chronic asthma went way down. I went from taking four meds for it to one. And I didn’t have to take the sinus inhalers either. I could finally BREATHE and was no longer a mouth breather. Smile.
To me, it was a HUGE answer to prayer. I just felt sad it took my husband’s hip problems to get us there. But it was a good thing to get taken care of before the disaster of illness that plagued the world these last couple of years. I’m not sure we would have made it otherwise...if the Lord would not have somehow protected us from it in some other way.
All we do to maintain our healing is to be sure to use the ointment every six months or so.
And get this, then I was treated for Lyme disease (which I had suffered from since 1996) a couple of years later in about 2018 with doxycycline and another antibiotic for about four months, and it made it so that I didn’t have to take my one inhaler for my lungs everyday anymore. It was miraculous after suffering from illness induced chronic asthma for 30+ years! Now I have to take it because of another med I have to take every day. But I won’t be taking that for very long. And then I’m free! Woohoo!
So though those were some major anti-perks, they did go away eventually through intervention. Sometimes they do when the Lord gets involved. So that’s my encouraging word for the day. Just sayin’!

I believe these anti perks are sometimes called handicaps in games. They do seem annoyingly more easy to acquire than perks. But they are just added challenges. They make life interesting. I have got my popping jaw and have to be careful what exercises I do while working out because I am prone to stress fractures/injuries.

Even though im very young i still have various of these “anti-perks”, like my bad eyesight ( i have to wear my glasses contantly or i get very bad headaches:p, cuz i see double), or my sinusitis, or my joint pain or musle pain, idk what i have going on but is very tiresome, even with this “obstacles “ i still manage to do art and stuff so, as long as i can enjoy the stuff that i do im fine, or something to that extent

Found you by a very happy accident. Your art is sort of personalized steampunk. You make your art seem easy but I can tell that you have many many years of practice and that is how this comes so naturally to you. I hate most of my art but you make believe how I express myself is ok. I love your art and your out there personality makes my heart happy. Hope you don't get any more anti perks. I'm old, I have loads but you just made me feel better about these too.

i always had teeth problems, like at first they were crooked af, but i thought welp at least i don't have cavities, and then after wearing braces for three years i started getting cavities, and then i thought WELP at least my teeth are somewhat straight rn, and THEN i started having nightmares about loosing teeth, cuz when you know how drastically your teeth can move from one place to another (thanks to braces), it kinda creeps you out
i literally had one of these nightmares today and it was a really bad one, so this video actually hit close to home, and i don't feel alone now, so thank you, Peter!
p.s: also i have four wisdom teeth, so if there are any members of Wisdom Teeth Are Bitches Club, i salute you

Peter, the only thing about the pencil is that it might imprint on the other page of the sketch book and sort of mess it up, and fixative would mess up the ink, maybe cut some cooking wax paper between the 2. Nice

    • @doc_sav
      @doc_sav 2 роки тому

Pencils rubbing onto opposing pages really bugs me. Soft pencils are especially bad, and of course it is worse if it is a book that you bring around with you. I think the wax / parchment paper is actually a great idea for books that just stay put at home. I guess you might be able to fix it if you were using a good permanent ink like Noodler's black, but that limits your color choices. It is a whole dilemma.

    • @evilcritter

Peter uses Platinum Carbon Black ink, which does not budge! I've used spray fixitive on it (ink and pencil drawing) and it was not bothered. Awesome ink. Totally waterproof.

So thats definitely one of my anti perks. Another is I get random headaches that aren't migraines doctors still aren't sure. Um and lastly my sciatic nerve on the other leg, not the one with the knee likes to flair up.

Hullo Peter, I do enjoy watching your videos seeing you create amazing artwork and interesting commentary about so many subjects that are by themselves quite interesting! I prefer to concentrate on my positive “challenges” if you concentrate on the difficult or negative you will get caught up and not accomplish anything other than maybe getting out of bed! If you get that far! So develop those positive things and give that negative “perk” a pass! Develop that love of drawing or painting even just chatting with your viewers in your chat/comments section! I do look forward to watching your videos.

The antiperks I dislike the most are the mental ones because these make other things feel much worse sometimes, because suddenly everything becomes such a big deal and so stressful despite the fact that taking it easy and relaxing for a bit would be so much better
