0411 ECM Swap for GMT400 trucks, L31 350 or L29 454

- Its a computer swap! The stock black box PCM that was found in 1996 to 2000 GMT400 trucks has a few shortcomings if you are using your truck in a high performance application, or you just want to be able to make tuning adjustments to the ECM. by swapping to an 0411 ECM from a later model GM truck, you open up a lot of doors for tuning the engine, having a tow/haul mode, high and low octane spark tables, higher RPM limit, and a whole lot more.
Look up and message LEXTECH on the truck forums for the spreadsheet... (didnt want to publicly list his email address)

Bought an 0411 from lextech on the gmt400 forums probably a year ago or so. He sent me a spreadsheet and everything. Haven't done the swap yet but this is great motivation to do it 👍
I've been so unmotivated to get working on my truck lately man I have 2 of these l29 k2500s sitting because of it and about 3k in parts
@@Apolloneek yeah I have a 99 c1500 suburban that needs a front end rebuild and a 97 k1500 silverado which is my daily that needs rockers a cab corner and a fender. Been really sluggish about working on them and I have some extra time coming up so hopefully I can give them some attention. Planning on picking up a 96-2000 k1500 Tahoe for the wife soon. Cant get enough of these trucks
@@MegaDysart lol I feel you I can't either but I'm really into the 4wd 454 ones I have 3 now and they're so big I'm running out of space one is a tbi and has engine and trans out and waiting for funds to send to machine shop and tranny shop the other 2 are l29 and one is mint besides hydro boost system full replacement both need whole new suspension from shocks down and the second needs a new tranny and transfer case and driveshafts and u joints
@@Apolloneek yeah that's a lot of work. Front end and suspension work is my least favorite. Big block trucks are sweet I would get one if they didnt get 10 mpg
@@MegaDysart lol I laughed so hard at the 10 mpg it's a pain in the ass sometimes but honestly I tow alot for a landscape company and it can handle anything our trailer broke before the suburban stopped
brilliant love how you investigate newer tech for older trucks and it becomes plug and play or bolt in for the most part. Breathing new life into old vehicles is best way to forgo the recycle/crush routine. great job and gives me ideas for my project
Really appreciate anyone who can make wiring look good! You left me with a lot of ideas!!!
thanks!
Great timing on your 0411 swap, I am looking into this for my 98 K3500 7.4.
Same here on my 00 k3500 5.7
I am so pleased you spend time paying attention to detail!
Next mod - upgrade your brake master cylinder to a NBS version. You'll love the difference! Rock on!
I wonder how hard a hydra boost would be to do
@@mitchheine6878 his Suburban already has hydra boost. Its not that hard to change it from vacuum either.
@@dhallster1078 yep your right I guess I didn’t bother to look hard enough just thought it would be a big improvement
Or better yet Hydro-boost from a GMT800. I did that and the brakes are great.
Gmt800 or 900
This video just made me feel good about paying a professional tuner to tune my truck. You guys do your magic
I got my pinout from Leitch a couple weeks ago. Plan to do it soon on the 2000 crew cab OBS dually. Great video.
Love your channel too! Down to earth and no BS and jus how us "regular guys" get out there and do things
@TheLimitedmod22 I appreciate that brother! Just now seeing this but thank you for the support!
@@CoolCarsKJ What is his email so I can get ahold of him for the pinout swap sheet
I've been waiting for you to do this video.
1) Just a warning, the evap line that goes from the canister to the intake is no longer available. Anywhere. So be careful not to break it, or you'll have to scrounge one from a junkyard.
2) I'm currently eyeballing upgrading my front spindles to GMT800 spindles to get bigger pads and more stopping power, along with slip-fit rotors rather than the pressed-stud style of my beloved GMT400s.
3) You sure do time you Burb videos well. I was just thinking about this swap a few days ago!
I'll be careful with the line for sure! I also wanna do the 2500HD spindle upgradee
@@LawrenceTolman
All I know is, you've already covered so many things that I want to do to MY '99 K2500 Burb!
Thank you LT. I have been talking with you on ig. This will be next project. Strongly recommend powerstop front brakes. Almost scary how great this tank stops now.
This is great video for someone learning to do this. Been thinking of doing this on my 97 Silverado thanks for all your hard work.
Your watch is definitely giving the audience a sense of Continuity.
Awesome to see this video! I’ve got a 98 c3500 Dually that will one day get a cam and headers and whatnot and I’ve always wondered what the best route for tuning is and this seems to be an incredibly easy route to take! Especially since I work for a business that does ls swaps daily and 0411s are in easy access for me! Can’t wait to see the rest of how this turns out
Keep the Burb vids comin’!
will do!
@@LawrenceTolman would u consider doing mail in programming
LT, I've done this twice using L21 valve covers and LS coils packs. No more hard to get to distributor parts and works great, give it a try!
What timing crank wheel did you use?
Great tip! I think down the road I might have to do just that. I was looking at efi connections kit they offer
I used the EFI Connection basic kit. I just got a full set of coil packs and harness from an 03 5.3 at the local pick n pull. You can get the harness connectors from EFI also, or order a 36" coil pack relocation harness from many sources. You will be using an LS tune 8.1L or 6.0L so you will need to swap injectors, as the firing order is different. I just repinned at the pcm. Best to do this while doing a cam swap, no extra work really.
LT you talk a lot. It’s exactly what I’m looking for when looking for an instructional video. Great work! 👍✌️
I'm glad someone likes listening lol... stay tuned I've got plenty more talking headed your way
Now I'm going to go watch you convert a 4WD to AWD for like the 100th time. Can't wait for the next video.
thanks! should be out this weekend
Jet software is what I use to tune the black box in my 97 S10. I have a 0411 ecm to install into it. Great video and as always great work and content.
What did the jet software do?
Watching you pin out the 0411 box has me thinking of pinning out a multi conductor cable for a robot arm. So frikking tedious but well worth it when you're done and it works as it should
Great video!! Happy to see you back on UA-cam and all the information you provide.
More to come!
Ready to see how to set up the new PCM with the correct OS
upload will be live tomorrow!
I did find out that you can add a pin and use the shifter our of the 99 ASTRO van or use a switch to have tow/haul mode
I was actually pondering this idea for my 96 the other day.
Looks good, you made that look easier than it really is I bet!
Following up on the 0411 swap into S10. I did a L31 (1996-99 Vortec) V8 swap into a 99 S10 blazer. Told Lextech what I was doing and he sent me the pinout spreadsheet to switched the PCM along with an additional sheet to switch the pinouts on the fuel injection connector.
that sounds badass! I always wanted to try that in an S-10
How did u Get ahold of lextech?
0411 swaps really transform the drivability on GMT400 trucks. Its really simple to add Tow/Haul function with the 0411 swap too. Its just a single input you add a ground input. The Bravada had a great T/H button works perfect for swaps.
thanks for the heads up on the bravada button! Any year in particular?
@@LawrenceTolman 98-02 if I remember correctly.
@@LawrenceTolman do you have lextech contact info? Searched forums, was hoping to avoid registering for forums I'll never use. Does he have a website maybe?
@@b.c4066 I’m in the same boat as your right now. If you happened to find the email.
I have a 2000 Blazer and it has the plug in for the T/H. I took a T/H harness & button from a junkyard Bravada. Do I just need to get my PCM flashed with the Bravada VIN for T/H to work on my Blazer?
Yessirr!! My 1996 ext cab 2wd i did last year it turned out amazing, didn’t have this video when i did it and this video would have been so much help to have earlier! I’m glad the new guys are getting the helpful resources to get this done without as much hassle. Good work LT!
Right on!
I have a 96 ext cab as well and will be doing the 0411 swap on it. I have a 5.7L but I can only find 5.3L 0411's online, does it matter? And is there any other kinda pointer I will need to make it run correctly. I would really appreciate your input
@@SuperMrfranco hello, yes the 0411 pcm comes out of pickups with 5.3 engines and then your local engine tuner with the hptuners program will be able to set the pcm to run your 5.7 just by handing them the pcm by itself before installing to your truck. The map they’ll load on to it will be an older safari van or express van tune because in like early 2000’s those vans came equipped with a 5.7 AND the 0411. So any 0411 pcm will work (5.3, 4.8, 5.7, doesn’t matter just needs to be an 0411) with help from your local tuner. Check customconnectorkits.com for the 80 pin connectors you’ll need the red+blue style.
Great info, was wondering what confuser I was going to swap to for my 1997 K1500 project, thanks.
Everything I read was saying that I needed a confuser from a 98 to 2000, but I like the idea of this one if its more programmable.
Plus I would of never guessed that the older ones would only let the engine spin to 5,800. Great info.👍
I did this to my 96’ 350 and love it!
How did the tuning go for you? I have a 96 with a 350 as well. Haven't bit the bullet yet to do this
@@joshhunter935 it was good. My tuner didn’t know what to say but he did a good job. DRTUNEMALL Is a legend. I’ve got 0 issues with the truck. But I also live in Florida so I don’t see much climate change.
@@THEBRAINANAYTOR fair enough, I live in NC so don't know what would change of anything. Just need to find a tuner I guess after getting this done
Evap wiring??
this is Sweet! currently swapping that drivetrain into a 66 C10
sounds like a fun truck!
Enjoy doing this without cheater glasses because you will need them in a few years. Nice work and great information!!!
Holding down that box is a great time for a zip tie moment.....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
To really take advantage of the 411 the next step is adding the 24x crank wheel. Allows for sequential EFI and LS coils to be used.
yup, would be so cool if I could find a factory L21 setup to do just that
As long as you don’t let out the blue magic smoke 💨 then you did it right. I hate wiring.
Great info! Thank you! Keep the burb build going!
I had seen you commented on one of Goat Rope Garage's videos asking about this a while back. Nice work!
Really loving these videos I have an obs of my own for almost 5 years and its nice seeing these videos. As well as you showing the people in the groups on fb. These are informative videos and have helped alot with my build recently!
This is Awesome, thanks for doing the videos on this and the console, witch is how I found this one. I've got a 98 gmt400 tahoe 2door that I'm going to put the gm HT383E in and this will help make the most power I'm thinking. Thanks again so much for this video ,I'm going to start today on sourcing the parts. Keep up all the mods 👍😁
sure thing! the HT 383 is a great engine, but restricted by the stock tune in the black box. an 0411 along with a proper tune would be a perfect upgrade and let you get the most out of the new engine
@@LawrenceTolman thanks, yep one step at a time. 0411 swap then motor 👍
@ Lawrence LT Tolman order some Tesa loom tape and non adhesive wire loom tape for a more factory look and a less gooey mess if you ever need to get back in to those wires.
I have a couple spare 0411 PCM's from the local wrecker. I should get a base tune done for my C2500 L31 and wake it up!
Thank you for this you the real mvp🙌
Good video. I already did swap a few months back on a 98 c1500 w/5.7. The only problem I had was that the fuel gauge shows empty all the time. I got computer off eBay with VATS, REAR OXYGEN SENSORS, EGR and stuff deleted.
Tessa tape gives a good factory look.
I hit that like b4 I watch cuz its always good content. And informative.
Nice work! Have you used Tesa tape? They have engine bay tape that is amazing. Its a cloth based tape, and is what most European manufactures use.
No, but I’m gonna look it up!
Good timing on this video, I'm doing a 1997 L31 swap into my 1967 C20 with the 0411 pcm. I got my engine locally here in the ogden area, and sourced my PCM from a junkyard on 33rd so in SLC. I plan on running a mild boost (turbo) on this so the 0411 pcm was my only reasonable option.
yeah, the 0411 is a good inexpensive alternative to the aftermarket stuff, and it for the most part can do a lot of the same functions
GM Part Number 15995679 is an ECU bracket/holddown meant for that ECU style.
You can bend gmt400 bracket to hold pcm down
You can convert it to L21 and get coil per cylinder 454 24 x goes in the front cover and the distributor becomes a cam sensor. l21 was medium duty only identical to an l29 with coil on plug
I'd love to do that
@@LawrenceTolman google l21 454
That turbo protector looks sick and slick. Straight up Star Wars look to it. Very nice.
I've watched the BBC build on ugly truck and that was cool. I wouldn't mind seeing you do a coil on cylinder sbc twin turbo build or centrifugal supercharger build utilizing the 0411 components. Keeping it old school with new components.
those sound like some cool ideas!
Lt I have in plans to do just that in a sense. But I have been collecting new dominator efi stuff, bowtie block head and intake and a F2 procharger. I wish I would have known then what I know now and just used GM stuff. But it would be cool to see what you could do.
Keep up the awesome work
I'm still running the black box on my vortec 4.3 in my 99 s10 tuning with hptuners
Freaking love your channel sir!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!!
Much appreciated!
Looks pretty damn good in my opinion! Good work
thanks!
I love your content LT! I hope you say hi!
next time when you remove the cut wires on a used 0411 connector......instead of lifting the plastic clip to release the pin.....don't, just grab the cut wire from the backside and push forward and it will come right out.... As long as the colored covers are off. I can't tell you how many 0411 swaps i've done lol
I'll keep that in mind! cool tip
I was thinking the same thing!! Back when these things came in under warrenty pcm swaps and wire to wire repairs were done all the time
Love it man!

I’m thinking of a 0411 for my 94 Lt1? , it’s going to be a project for sure.
Your video was helpful.
that would be nice! not sure on the LT-1 OBD1 conversion, but I'm sure its doable
You have been busy working on both Trucks LT
seems like it never ends
So I did this ecu swap on my truck but the issue I ran into was my o2 sensors stopped working. (and their still not working till this day) I guess GM used isolated ground and case ground o2 sensors. Case ground o2 sensors get their ground from the case of the sensor and isolated ground gets its ground from the ecu. Im currently trying different types of sensors to see if I get a signal. apparently lots of people have this issue and theirs TONS of post on the forums about this issue. I think this should be mentioned in the video.
I have a 99 gmc k2500 7.4l I am doing the same swap on. Got cam, head work, headers, exhaust and upgraded valve train. Cant wait to see the benifits of the swap in tuning.
How'd it turn out? Was it worth the 💰💰.
@@t-dog3192 sadly the project got put on the back burner. It is starting back up soon so I can offer feed back then.
Great video! I’ve had these parts sitting in the garage for a year now. I was a little nervous about doing it, but now I watched you and can’t wait to do my own. One question though, what did you do about the VATs system to get it to start? I’ll need to get mine running so I can drive it to the tuner.
I'll show it all in the next video, but I'll use HP Tuners software to get it all programmed. However, you can order a computer from Lextech all set up with a base tune that has VATS already disabled
Thanks for the reply, I’ve been a fan since Power Block. Keep up the cool videos!

LT is the van tune file important because they ran the 5.7 sbc for more years in the van after 1999? Great video and I was surprised to learn the 0411 PCM was so backwards compatible. Keep up the great work!
yes, the Van tun is key because it houses the operating system needed to make this work, because most vehicles this computer came in used the LS engine, which has a totally different ignition pickup
I'm making a Frankenstein of a block. Gen V block, msd dis ignition, port matching the peanut port heads to fit a gen 6 mfi intake, and then trying to find a way for everything to communicate with each other haha
I'd like you to see the turn that 8100 into a 565 ci big block Chevy
Great video. I did a 411 swap how do you change the vin to match truck for emissions?
I’m in need of the sheet for the 0411 pcm swap on my 96 vortec doing the same cam set up and need it asap to get truck tuned
I would LOVE to do this to my 98 k2500! But I would definitely end up messing something up lol I can do basic mechanics thanks to growing up on a farm lol wiring like this I would mess up! Great video
its not too bad of a conversion to be honest...
Awesome video. I also just got the spread sheet from lextech. Thing is before I do the swap I gotta know is did you have to add the 4 wires for the transmission?
I did not add the four trans shift range wires, but in order to properly initiate a crank relearn, I had to tie two of them temporarily together on the PCM to get it to think it was in park. I think I made a note of this at the end...
How do you get ahold of Lextech? I can’t find him anywhere.
great video, i have a question off target of this video but thought i would throw it out since you work with newer stuff also and do videos on your 2020 HD. have you seen or ever found a good way to change the ESC on newer trucks to change the 35 mph reactivation. I hate that it enables at 35 mph, i would like to move the speed up or just keep off. Any tuners allow that? any other ideas other than pulling fuses or wiring interrupt in the circuit?
There’s a kit you can buy from somewhere (don’t remember exactly) but it basically is a switch that interrupts the signal from a front wheel speed sensor. It throws a code for wheel speed, but essentially disables all TCS functionality until you re flip the switch...
And use the donor ls cpm computer 2002 chevy silverado wire harness and the 96 chevy silverado wire harness to work for the swap
First! :) now will enjoy this video!!
Where are you located and do you do these modifications for customers. I am 82 and this is too much for me. Thanks

What would be cooler would be a harness that the truck connectors would plug into that would have the newer style red and blue connectors to plug into the confuser!

Have you seen it before?

@@dougj.8288
Well, that Jeep is one of a kind and no he didn't keep the A/C.
It has a roll cage and custom suspension built for driving on the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in lower west Michigan.
It was converted to 2 wheel drive that has 20 inches of suspension travel in the rear and 18 inches of suspension travel in the front. Most vehicles there have a hard time following him in the dunes when he's there.
I will be doing a video on my channel featuring that Jeep when the weather gets better. Right now it is in storage waiting for better weather.
He usually gets it out about a month before Memorial day to get it ready for that weekend. So I'm gonna try to get a video made then and maybe some action shots of it at the dunes?

Would I be able to swap the "black box" PCM to a 411 on a 2000 Chevy Blazer?
Awesome video!
Question: I want to swap in a 496 from a 2002 suburban that I have into a 98 dually. I know all the engine harness would need to go with the computer. Would I just have to repin everything from the body side to make it work? Would that computer communicate properly with the BCM?
Is it simple install once get everything where it need go and it work or do I need to relearn the pcm to the truck say vin and etc.
When ya swapped the PCM from black box to 0411 did the key fob to open the doors still work along with the AC, and the 4x4?
Will the process be the same from this video when applied to a 1998 Chevy K1500 Suburban AWD 5.7L? Mine was made in Mexico if that matters. Definitely want to do this but want to make sure the application is the same
overall the process will be almost identical
Put the connector in your Vice makes the job way easier than holding it
Could you do a synopsis video on what to do to update the 454 truck all the ways you recommend? There are a lot of us out here who would like to improve the performance of these trucks. I just got a K2500 suburban with a 454 for towing and would like to know what it takes to get the more our of it without spending a fortune. ECM, cam, headers, induction, etc. What is worth doing rather than just getting a newer truck?
Se puede hacer el mismo trabajo en un 5.7 vortec? Y de ser así en donde puedo encontrar la hoja para hacer esta conversión ?
How do you mount the computer since they are different I did the 411 swap and just need away to hold it in place. Video on that?
This video is worth it’s weight in gold. So a question. Could you do this mod and retain the factory harness for an ls swap? I have a 96 dually with the 7.4 I’m about to do a 6.0 and retain the stock 4l80e. Seems like it would be much cleaner and stock looking.
Yes, you could. You would have to add additional wiring for the extra coil packs, but I am told that Lextech has spreadsheets that show how to convert to an 0411 and LS swap all at the same time using the factory wiring harness...
@@LawrenceTolman where can I find Lextech?
