Africa is different because they have been importing old vehicles from Europe for decades, and they are running daily a lot of cars which would be considered classics in Europe (specially Mercedes), and so a fuel injection conversion makes sense for them. Making his own ECU is a remarkable achievement for this engineer, but it isn't groundbreaking for the industry.

And i know because my car doesn't come fitted with airbags 😅 Still i would love to fit one of those units on my car! Safety is a point i always struggle with when arguing with anyone about viability of old cars... as much as you can drive with your eyes open, there could always be someone distracted that hit you, maybe with a brand new SUV, and utterly ruin you, your family, and your car while he comes out almost unscathed. There are literally graveyards of EVs that have never spent their life transporting people. They are insanity. This tech is the polar opposite of that. This is how it's done. This guy is freaking awesome. But what you're saying is simply not true. You can like ICE cars _without_ having to bash EVs; it's not a competition. New cars are fokking boring anyway compared to these old beauties. So back to your argument: an EV recoups the extra CO2 released during (battery) production between 1 and 2 years. 1:02 A distributor is the successor to the carburetor may confuse many but he's talking about a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel distribution system more widely known as manifold fuel injection.
he should do his ECU conversion using the factory wiring, like the BMW e30. PnP (plug an play) models using the original computer wiring, for performance applications. He could do a lot of business from clients from other countries.
The older the car the less factory wiring and sensors there are. He’s got to add some of his own. On something like that K Jetronic system it’s much easier to toss it and write everything from scratch. This guy is on the ball!
I was loaned a 1966 230S like that for a month once. It was maroon though. Also beautifully restored. It handled like a boat but the engine is really good. Must have been well ahead of its time.
The man is a genius!!! Not saying he is the first to do it, but to implement it to the public is a public service. Fuel saving and increased power without internal modifications.
This guy is really quite smart. I commend him for being able to build his own ECU that works on a wide array of cars. But I have to say that just smacking a ECU onto an old car won't make it perform as good as modern vehicles do, there is no variable valve timing, direct injection, forced induction, etc... being added. He's just bettering the engine control by adding a computer and fuel injection. Some of the last carburetor cars had carbs on them that worked so well that you would barely get a percentage of better fuel consumption / power / drivability by converting to an EFI system. I would however like to see more of how his ECU works, safety controls, safety protocols / modes and such. We really do take ECU's for granted, they do way more than most people realise.
Agreed, but just a kit a eliminating carbs and having a 'criuse' closed loop lamda sensor mode as well as better idle control (which is what cars do a lot of the time in the developing world) it's worth it. I doubt his code is MISRA safe, but then these are old low reving cars and the ECU is just doing fuel and ignition on non-interfence engines. The local road quality poses more of a risk
That is brilliant, so many of these old engines need to be upgraded to EFi. Old 1960's, 70's cars with the Bosch early fuel injection and the later 'K'Jetronic systems will do well with full electronic conversion. One question, what sensor inputs go to the ECU (computer) for max efficiency? For example, is there a lambda sensor input to control the injector timing, or ignition timing. I have not seen anyone upgrade the old engines to EFi on the internet.🦁
@@Kj16V I was thinking of the other 'basic' inputs as those found in early generation 1 vehicles. The crank speed, I think he gets from the modified distributor as shown in the clip, and I think he has the coolant temp input as well. The Arduino memory capacity, not sure how much it can handle, and for minimum 7-10 sensors must be more higher. More information from the man is required.☘

Hi i am from India. He has engineed the entire fuel and ignition of the car, that to its not some generic stuff, each build is made ground up from scratch. Here a remap of an ecu itself costs 400$ most of the remaps rely on available data which at max would be fine tuned. The efforts that this man does for his build is amazing and charges reasonable amount for this hard work. Think the application on old cars may not be lucrative for him.
I think he should expand to other areas like performance tuning of existing ECUs. It will give him much higher profits with lesser effort. But i must admit the level of satisfaction in doing something unique is at another level. Money is secondary. 🎉❤
yes,,,good for fun but for making money
If he can market it to the Classic, restored, and Hot Rod enthusiast, there is absolutely a huge business potential. Taking a 60s musclecar and adding EFI is massively expensive now. Undercutting the market leaders with a product designed for daily use, it'll sell!
He's using ignition coils that are already produced. Same with the fuel injectors. There are companies that have been doing this for other engines for decades. This is nothing new. I would hope that someone that went to school for electronics engineering would be able to build and program some electronics.
This idea is very very old, not original or from scratch. It's called a "speeduino" system. He just put his own brand and name on it.

@@KOAP33 This is basically a fuel injection conversion, and has been invented for long, but it really doesn't make sense anywhere but in Africa... Almost every car since 1990 is already fuel injected, and those before that date are considered classics, so people tend to value their originality over the fuel efficiency.

As much as i'm a proud owner of a solid Skoda Felicia from 2000, 1.3 petrol engine, and i can really appreciate an old solid car, the next issue in line even if you improve the car's performances like this is safety.
And i know because my car doesn't come fitted with airbags 😅
Still i would love to fit one of those units on my car!
Safety is a point i always struggle with when arguing with anyone about viability of old cars... as much as you can drive with your eyes open, there could always be someone distracted that hit you, maybe with a brand new SUV, and utterly ruin you, your family, and your car while he comes out almost unscathed.

This is so dope, keep up the excellent work Mr. Mbiria!
You would need:
Crank speed sensor
Manifold pressure
Throttle angle
Intake air temp
Coolant temp
Wideband air/fuel ratio (preferably)
@@Kj16V I was thinking of the other 'basic' inputs as those found in early generation 1 vehicles. The crank speed, I think he gets from the modified distributor as shown in the clip, and I think he has the coolant temp input as well. The Arduino memory capacity, not sure how much it can handle, and for minimum 7-10 sensors must be more higher. More information from the man is required.☘
That engine turns over so smooth, and sounds great. no misfires. great job
