    The Spike/Willow "performance anxiety" scene is one of my favourites of the whole show. Both performances are perfectly pitched, played completely straight without any nods to the audience. Which just makes it even funnier IMO :).

    That Spike and Willow scene is one of the best ever put on film. It's so beyond ridiculous given the circumstances and every word just makes it more so.

    It took me twenty years to realise that when Willow tells Riley that Buffy likes cheese, she meant the ice dances and flowers and romance kind of cheese, not a literal block of cheddar.

    This episode really is special.
    Spike joining the cast, building expectations of his future role, the plot reveals, the comedy.
    I like to occasionally remind people that this kind of story telling on network TV was sort of unprecedented. Continuity was extremely loose, and small details like Willow's ongoing struggle with her breakup or Xander & Giles alienation. I still think it remains unchallenged.
    James Marsters has SO MUCH charisma. To take a minor villain meant to be killed off after a few episodes and become an immediate audience favourite... He earned that. I will argue that Spike's "problematic" dialogue has aged precisely as it should. He's evil. He's not SUPPOSED to be righteous. If you are comfortable with EVERFYTHING he says... there's probably something wrong with you :P
    And it makes the character's intelligence and observational skills shine all the more when he tells the truth. When he says something inarguable, but subverts it for his own agenda. Much like the Mayor, his virtues make him a MUCH better villain.

    Finally a worthy opponent for Xander. Their fight was brutal. 🔥🔥
    I almost feel sorry that Spike didn't bite Willow. He tried so hard and now he is sad😄 But he was able to boost her self esteem. So he is a good fellow.
    Your face lit up when you were talking about this scene at the end. Comparing to other things. That's how good it was. Just a minor scene that turned out to be one of the best in the whole show.

    I think the point of Riley saying "peculiar" is that if it were someone he didn't like, he'd say she's weird. Choice of words is always telling ;)

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron Рік тому +2

      And the fact that he was continuing to pay enough attention to keep calling her pecular. Rather than saying a simple "She's weird" and dismissing her. He kept harping on the pecular over and over again. Weird is dismissive and "pecular" is intriging.

    The fight between Buffy and the Initiative soldiers is one of my favorites in the show. Buffy's strategy of firing the flare to blind them while they're wearing night vision goggles is one of her most brilliant tactical maneuvers. I can't really explain why but I've always been fascinated by the idea that even though Buffy usually fights monsters and demons, she can also skillfully take out an entire team of what are essentially highly trained Navy seals. It really illustrates just how good she is on a human level that is easier to understand, compared to fictional monsters with vague power levels.

    There is a bit of a plot hole in this episode, since Spike violently hurt several of the Initiative members during his escape. My theory is that the chip had to be activated or calibrated by his feeding instinct, to keep him from attacking anyone he sees as food, rather than just an obstacle in his way. Since he didn't drink the bag of blood in his cell, this didn't happen until he tried to feed on Willow.

    • @Kayjee17
      @Kayjee17 Рік тому +2

      Huh, I never thought about it. Either by the feeding instinct or they activated it after he escaped. It's possible they were coming to take Spike to activate the chip and test it when he escaped, so they activated it after he escaped, and that's why Riley reported on it after they got back.

      Hey, at least she’s an adult at this point, unlike when Angel (a 240 year old vampire who was already a 25 year old man when he was turned) declared that his ‘one true love’ was a 16 year old girl… You know, in retrospect, there were so many signs that Joss Whedon was a creep. 😬

  • @killianlpc

    The Initiative contains some brilliant comedy moments, from when Spike says could be 'cosmetic company' in answer to the lab rats reference. Then we also have the greatest fight in The Buffyverse, with Xander and Harmony bitch slapping and sissy kicking in slow motion, a homage to the Kung Fu series of the 1970s. We then have Spike in Willow's room, and the analogy to erectile disfunction, Willow says 'doesn't this happen to every vampire', and then Willow saying it must be me, and Spike saying he would bite her in a heartbeat, all this achingly funny. We now know about Riley and Prof Walsh, and their activity with Initiative in what is like some kind of Bond Film complex. Riley is almost as awkward as Angel when it comes to chatting up women, but we can see how much he likes her when laying out Parker. An important episode the S4 as a whole.

    I don’t think that Riley being in the Initiative means something is wrong with him. It’s like saying something is wrong with Buffy because she’s a slayer. He’s still a good guy from what we’ve seen. He’s a demon hunter just like Buffy except she’s the chosen one with super powers and if we are asking if Riley will tell Buffy the truth about what he does she has to tell him too. It goes both ways. Not my favorite episode but has some really important things in it.

      @@davidmeadows5627 Would you go up to a girl you didn't know and tell her that you think she is "matressable"?
      If you're talking about a woman with your guy friends in terms that you'd never repeat to her face...then don't be surprised if women feel uncomfortable when they overhear it. There's a reason you wouldn't tell her this to her face (unless you knew for a fact that she didn't mind being called "fuckable.") It'd be somewhat understandable (though still uncomfortable) if they were fifteen, but they're in their twenties. And if (as Forrest did) you talk about all women in terms of whether or not you'd fuck them, that's a red flag. If that's how you regularly talk about women with your guy friends, maybe you should examine how you talk about women with your guy friends.

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy Рік тому +3

      @@davidmeadows5627You know that scene in Earshot where Buffy hears a male student thinking "Buffy's so beautiful," and she's flattered, so she stops to get more telepathic compliments, but then the guy thinks that he'd like to shove her up against the locker and fuck her right there, and she gets uncomfortable and walks off?
      It's like that, except that random guy didn't know Buffy could read his thoughts, so he didn't really do anything wrong. Phrasing matters. There's a line where it stops being innocent, maybe even flattering, and gets gross.
