Till this day this is one of the the best episode in television, not just on this show. Its truly amazing what they did with this one
I love that you always spot the chemistry between actors/characters. That’s really all I can say without potentially spoiling anything - not sure how far ahead you are on Patreon. But in this show and on others, you’re sharp when it comes to seeing chemistry, whether on the page or not. Keeps me coming back to your videos!
Amy turned herself into a rat
But Willow turned her back into human and turned her back into a rat in the previous episode! In a lot shorter time than Amy did lol.
It's a great episode. I love when they've got their voices back and "need to talk", how nothing comes out at all.
Absolutely, they played Faith x Buffy as sooooooo gay. My headcannon is that Faith was super into Buffy, but repressed because it was the 90s.
The Gentlemen did actually knock on Parker’s door at first but they couldn’t find a heart
😂
And they didn't even bother knocking on Professor Walsh's door
That's absolutely hilarious.
ROFL
Welcome to one of THE best BTVS episodes!! So so good! People criticized Whedon for relying too much on witty dialogue. So he was like, fine, I’ll make an episode with almost no dialogue! Brilliant episode of TV! And The Gentlemen were the creepiest, scariest villains on Buffy. I recommend reading the Wikipedia article on the episode and it really gets into the themes and historical context of the episode.
With my mum being a Buffy fan but also blind, this was the single most difficult episode for me to audio describe for her.
"What if they get the wrong voices back?'
Amusingly, Buffy sort of did: that's not SMG screaming at the end. Apparently, she was having trouble pulling off the sustained, loud scream they wanted, so she was dubbed over by another actress.
Really? And I've always felt it was a pretty weak scream as screams go. If they were going to overdub her, they could've chosen a much better screamer.
@@Pixelologist I thought it was a scream in anger/frustration rather than a scream of fear.
The Gentlemen represent some of the worst villains of real life, well-dressed and smiling as they float by untouchably with their minions doing their grunt work. There are shades of rape, with the victims being held down as their hearts are taken. The Gentlemen thrive when the whole society is silent, and the only way to defeat them is to find your voice.
I also love how nearly every single scene has something to do with communication or miscommunication, from the lecture at the beginning to Xander punching Spike.
I think this is definitely one of the worst villains on the show (in that they're the best / scariest, I mean). The Gentlemen don't make a sound, they're weirdly polite with each other, they look scary as hell, and they do the most horrific thing (cutting out a heart) while you're completely conscious, feel everything and can't scream. Talk about a nightmare. 😳🥺😧
When I first saw this episode, I was (appropriately) horrified and it scared the crap out of me.
But it's such an amazing episode, because the majority of it has absolutely no dialogue, and they convey so much with expressions and joke looks and gestures to one another, and the kiss between Riley and Buffy (as you note, they can finally kiss instead of babbling nervously at one another), and the whole episode has this incredible tension. It's a well-executed episode. Plus, you have Riley and Buffy finding out about each other, and you meet Tara for the first time which is very cool. And Spike taunting Xander about Anya, which is hilarious.
"Xannnnnnder..."
"SHUT UP!" 😆🤣
Joss Whedon wrote this episode as an answer to salty critics who claimed Buffy was only mildly successful because of it’s snappy dialogue. Ironically, this is the only episode that was ever nominated for an Emmy.
why does everyone always mention this? As though the Emmys are some measure of high quality. Especially in this period of time, Emmys were nothing but a popularity contest rather than a good barometer for quality. If they were, Buffy would have cleaned up with Emmys during its seven season run
Aaron Sorkin is known for witty dialog too, but everyone praises it instead of knocking it. Double standards much?
@@Nexusofgeek HEY did you hear this episode was nominated for an Emmy?? God the Emmys were great, such a good quality episode. I wish I could go back in time and goto the Emmys.
This is certainly an iconic episode. Very clever.
23:02 There were definitely sparks between Willow and Tara. Some viewers in the 90s didn't pick up on it, but to most modern viewers it's pretty clear.
21:39 No, dorms are usually only like that on tv and movies. Some are even more ridiculous, like Riri's dorm in _Wakanda Forever._
I think The best episode of S4 by far. Brilliant innovative writing, The Gentlemen were among the scariest of BTVS monsters. The cast recalled it was actually exhausting to film with the effort that had to be put in talk but stay silent. The nightmare of being cut into and not being able to scream shown when the student is being held down while The Gentlemen extract his heart, really frightening. The comedy between Xander and Spike brings a little light relief, and also our introduction to Tara. A great stand alone episode. This is a brilliant episode but, I feel there are more in S5 and and in S6 that even eclipse this. This was a fantastic stand alone episode and fan favourite.
Restless is equal and imo better
yes! Finally someone agrees with me!
@@alooncnej4696 better imo
@@Nexusofgeek i agree, better it is subjective but this an underrated episode because it is less impactful directly to characters but so important and well edited. I only see dream sequences well done in Twin Peaks
Most episodes of Buffy are good. The majority are great. But there are a few, like this one, that are true masterpieces. It's always a blast watching reactors get to this one, and you didn't disappoint.
I spent a year putting together a Gentleman costume for a "Vampire Ball" we were attending in New Orleans on the week of Halloween. I even shaved my head for it.
Juliet Landau who played Drusilla was there the second day speaking about her time on Buffy and Angel and even acted out a scene as Drusilla for us.
Definitely one of the best episodes of the entire show!! Do not apologize, we love your reactions!! I really enjoyed yours during the episode and your review afterwards. Again..thank you!!
Good episode but I don't see it being in my top 25. Way too many better ones that aren't just monster of the weeks.
Lol - I knew you'd laugh at Anya's antics in this one. From eating popcorn during Giles' monster presentation (lol) to the gesture she makes after Xander finally kisses her and shows her how much he cares... she's a riot. 😆🤣😄
Ah, The Gentlemen.... It's worth to rewatch the episode a few times. When they don't scare as much anymore you can appreciate the acting (real mime-players)
Hush is one of the most powerful of The Buffy franchise. May I also say that I love your reactions to the show called Grimm. My cousin Robert Blanche was an actor who will show up later in the series. Big hugs to you my dear. With respect always Brant Heavner 🙏💯
It's funny - back at the time this episode aired, not being able to speak would have been a serious impediment to daily life. You WOULD have seen guys selling tiny little boards to write on.
Nowadays, everybody would just text everything. It would be nowhere near as big a problem (barring some exceptions, of course).
Actually Amy's the one who turns people into rats, not Willow.
Willow did turn Amy back into a rat in "Something Blue," so Dakara's not actually wrong.
I spat my coffee out when she was like he looks like demonic uncle fester 😂
Why would they need to explain it? Even the residence of Sunnydale who don't understand usually know thy live in a town they can't explain, but try to ignore or explain away oddball things, and anyone outside Sunnydale who doesn't know would assume hoax, as the newscaster said.
It says a lot that Buffy and Riley still aren't communicating at the end when everyone else worked through their issues nonverbally. They have more work than all the other romances, and not just because it's newer.
I never understood the creep factor people had with this one. To me, it was too much fun to be so, if that makes sense.
Joyce is at home, not out of town. Buffy being at college her first year, just doesn't visit much.
E-mail and cell phones weren't like they are nowadays. This was December of 1999. It was not common to have either. The internet was barley a thing and was still articles. Video was weak on it. The only thing they could do to in terms of the group from the other show was to drive down and that would take time. How it happened was the easiest and quickest way.
And there we have it, one of the more creative and well executed episodes in television history and certainly in the series. I always love how the absence of dialogue revealed a lot that their normal means of communication couldn't. Some scenes that will always be classic: Giles' silent briefing on the Gentlemen (and Buffy's first guess on how to kill them... LOL), anytime Anya is trying to find out from Xander if she's more than just an "orgasm friend"..... just a great episode, and reaction to it as well D! a "hushed" CTU for you today! Keep em coming!
Top 5 Episode of Buffy, hands down!
The slideshow is one of my favorite comedic TV scenes of all time
The character design of The Gentlemen has stayed with me, haunting my nightmares since I first saw them nearly 20 years ago! It is absolutely brilliant, even if they make my skin crawl! Lol! Brilliant episode! Buffy miming "stabbing" them, and everyone completely misunderstanding the gesture never fails to crack me up. 😁
Brookside. Anna Friel. 😊
eliza dushku, the actor who played faith, definitely intended the lesbian subtext, but it was never part of the planned story, just something she brought into it.
With buffys history with certain vampires I'm not suprised they questioned the hand gesture 😂
Excellent reaction, particularly in recognizing the meaning of Giles' expression at the end. Excellent acting and directing at that moment, too.
Man first appearance of Tara 👏 Definitely a fan favorite episode Hush, Also Spike 🤣 Moment's are gold 🤘
Was waiting for this one ...one of my favorites
This episode is Art 😊❤
Television dorm rooms and apartments are nothing like real life. They've got to fit in all the camera equipment so the rooms are over twice as large as they are in reality.
I want to point out that one of the Gentlemen was Doug Jones, who is quite famous for his work in roles like this. This was such a brilliant episode and the start of some interesting storylines I think.
tara ♥♥♥
Excellent episode about communication, one of the masterpieces of the season and of the show.
Gay/Lesbian relationships were very uncommon on US television at that time in the year 2000. However, I am pretty sure Queer As Folk had already aired on the BBC. The US version of QAF starting airing late 2001.
Love your reactions and this episode! But I have to stick up for Willow a bit - she didn’t turn Amy into a rat. Amy turned herself into a rat, Willow just hasn’t been able to turn her back (except for a second or two!).
American dorm rooms “ can” be like this but, just like the typical NY apartment, they tend to be exaggerated for effect of TV.
Property is dirt cheap in Sunnydale-thanks, Hellmouth-so it makes sense that dorm rooms are king size.
Their dormroom is 8x times the size of most American university dormrooms
They didn’t have emailing back in the old days.
Spike couldn't fight back when Xander started hitting him. He can't hit people without his chip going off.
This and a number of other episodes across the seasons stand out as in some way very different from the norm making them incredible and extremely memorable.
Email was not so common a thing back then and nor was texting.
Dorm rooms tend to be a small single room like 8 feet by 10 feet maybe for 2 people and a shared bathroom/shower room for the floor.
Brookside would be the soap you're on about.
This is well known as one of the best episodes of Buffy. As much as many people tend to dismiss this show, it's really one of the most innovative with some of the most original episodes that so many shows since have ripped off.
I love how buffy was allowed to commit ABH as long as the person didnt die 😂
The Gentlemen aren't even the creepiest looking things in Buffy and people can't stand them 😂
Yeah this Episode was somewhat terrifying, when it 1st came out.
That scene with the Projector is absolutely hilarious 😂
You might remember Tara from Supernatural, she was the Vampire Lenore that went off Human blood and Sam tried to help.
Fun Fact : The actress that voiced over the character of Olivia (Giles' girlfriend) in french was the same that also voiced Jenny Calendar.
It made me kinda fantasize that Giles may have get involved with Olivia because she reminded him of Jenny.
This episode was nominated for two Emmy Awards, but sadly didn't win.
19:33 don't say nothing... come on...
Top 5 episode
Yay! This is my favourite episode of Buffy! I love everything about it!
Catching up on all your Buffy/Angel reactions and the moment you predicted Tara would die, “Say goodbye to your heart.” 16:39 😭 Knowing the future…
This episode is pretty universally recognized as among the best of Buffy. And it’s pretty certainly one of the creepiest/scariest as well (even though it still has a lot of humor).
Great reaction as always! Looking forward to the rest of the season (and show). 👍
I love the change in attitude from being completely all for Willow & Oz to wholeheartedly shipping Willow & Tara after only one appearance! 😂 Yeah, their chemistry was just that strong. I think back in the ‘90s most straight people didn’t spot their sparks in this episode, but every LGBTQ person did LOL! Even little baby me, who had no idea yet that I was queer, noticed it, paid attention, and LOVED it.
For an American show.....they really have nailed the British piss taking with Spike and Xander
Hello Dakara! I enjoy watching you react to the shows that you watch. If you happen to see this comment some day, then may I suggest a few other good shows for you to react to in the future. They're not the supernatural shows that you are use to, but they're still very good shows for you to react to. That is, of course, if you haven't seen them already.
1. Criminal Minds (2005-2020)
2. Elementary (2012-2019)
3. Leverage (2008-2012)
4. Person of Interest (2011-2016)
5. Bones (2005-2017)
All crime fighting shows.
I view Anya as being autistic coded although "coded" (written with autistic traits which the writers don't acknowledge as actually being autistic) is perhaps unfair as the story was first created before we had the better understanding of what "autistic" actually meant. The DSM-IV criteria (current when BtVS was first made) was really inadequate in diagnosing what we now know as autism. For one thing it was considered almost entirely a disorder of boys, with girls never being autistic (we've gotten better, but it's still underdiagnosed among women). But Anya's behavior really appears autistic to me.
When Xander beats on Spike, and Spike realizes why, and then Xander kind of shrugs "sorry" at him - Spike basically gives him a pass. If anyone knows how love can make you crazy, it's Spike. "I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." Such a romantic...
The main "gentleman" (the one that gets most screen time) is played the amazing Doug Jones, one of THE best creature actors there is.
He's played Billy Butcherson in both Hocus Pocus movies, Abe Sapien in both Hellboy movies, the reptile man in The shape of Water, about 5 different creatures in Pans Labrythe plus many many more.
When this episode aired, Queer As Folk was on British tv. It was made by the man who revived Doctor Who, Russell T. Davies. You were probably too young for that though. U.S. tv was still really uptight about showing LGBT+ characters and relationships at this time. Oh well, at least we had Xena.🥰
One of the best episodes of Buffy - definitely in my top ten. And The Gentlemen? Extremely shuddersome. I knew you would love that visual comedy moment of Buffy demonstrating how to kill the monsters. 🤣🤣(I do too.) Another moment that I love is Giles look of absolute 'Ew' when Anya and Xander run off to have sex. 😂
Might be wrong but I think the first uk one was brookie? Idk long time ago and I don't even live there anymore...
Nvm: Hush is basically one of the best episodes of any show anywhere at any time.....
"they keep showing this chick...", just you wait, she'll be your new favorite in no time :D
This episode totally freaked me out when it first aired
The episode that proves SMG isn't great at literally everything she tries.
Girl can do emotion, she can do comedy, she can play characters across the moral spectrum.
But she sure can't scream for shit :P
When a show can make an episode with nearly no dialogue and yet filled with communication, it demonstrates just how special the ensemble were.
As for your last comments, I'm hardly a paragon of British reserve (I'm an extremely, openly, emotional person and always have been) but I have no idea how anyone could mistake your reactions for boredom...
Creepy and funny from start to finish; one of the masterpieces of the entire run, with the monsters being killed by a logical weakness. They can hear the low tones of heartbeats at distance, so obviously they cannot withstand screaming!
The music is also wonderful; all instrumental, obviously. Pretty much a flawless episode.
I love the last line of this episode "I guess we have to talk". A great double meaning. Remember, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach...or his ribcage.
Perhaps another way to a man's heart is thru his nipples.
The army guys are under cover as TA’s. The TA’s was short for members of the Territorial Army in the uk now known as the Army Reserves. 😳🇬🇧🏴🤠
I agree, The Gentlemen are probably the scariest Buffy monsters ever!
My fav Buffy episode, glad u liked it. Apparently joss said he based the idea of it based on a nightmare he being paralysed on his bed with the gentleman hovering over him holding the scalpel.
The dorms are definitely more posh than the reality. They don't have stylish beds and curtains. Lol
Heart-stealing demons always happens when I get sick
Faith wasn't attracted to Buffy, she wanted to be Buffy.
15:42 - the town is quarantined. No one in or out. So Cordy couldn't visit and hiking in would have taken longer than the episode.
I love this eps so clever and super creepy
Saying that Oz cheated on Willow is like saying Angel killed Jenny
Great reaction to a classic episode! By they way, has anyone ever told you that your name "Dakara" means "Because" in Japanese?
Likely thinking of Anna Friel and Nicola Stephenson on 'Brookside', back in 1994 ish (though I think _strictly_ they were only the first lesbian kiss on British TV _pre_ watershed). But yep, big carry on, lots of pearls clutched etc. and yet somehow we survived (and of course now the fuss seems ridiculous).
Little cracker this IMO, one of the several Buffy episodes that spawned a thousand lit crit essays :).
the soap was "brookside" anna friel played the lesbian
Hush is one of the best Buffy episodes, i love it and i hope you liked it too. The episode was filmed with them taking and then the sound was removed, which is sneaky in a cool way.
I think this is a great episode but it's been overblown and overrated in my opinion, comparatively speaking, which I realize I am not in the majority. There are better episodes but this one always makes the top 10 lists. And no, I don't think there was anything between Faith and Buffy other than their shared slayerdom.
The Gentleman are the only monster of the week to get it's own pop in the Buffy Funko Pop series.
The lesbian kiss was on Brookside. The greatest soap ever.
Remember Xander comes from a very unhappy and unhealthy home. Also, from a writing point-of-view, "you did turn into a real girl" is a way the writer can help tell the audience that Anya is a character that has transformed from a demon into a real human being-as well as reinforcing that this show is about growing up and beiong authentic.
I still don't understand why he destroyed that ring, that lets him walk in the sun. All the monsters in the area would be drawn to him.
I love the way you say Bwuah-fay, especially when you slow it down more.
Those dorm rooms are super unrealistic for American schools, too.
There's an episode of season 3 . . .
Hands!
Given your comment I have to ask, how often are you in body combat?
A lively ep to be sure, but it also has some big narrative developments.
7:56 The Gentleman scared the shit out of Shan as well Dakara.😆
I love watching people's reaction to the start.
Watching this one again as a little Xmas treat to myself.
This episode legit gave me nightmares.
Nothing gets past you.
