This episode is SO FUN for reactions. So many reveals. The 'here's a sweet himbo, no wait, he's the commando we've been seeing around campus' switcharound is done so well. And the park scene where the audience is aware of both of their secret identities but neither of them know and both are trying to shoo the other away is so Shakespearean. In the highschool seasons, Giles is the guy who knows everything and you can count on to save the day. His presence is very reassuring and comforting. It think its a parallel to childhood (or teenagehood) where you feel adults simply have it all figured out.

When I was going through grad school for clinical psych, I was also working for the dept as a TA. Toward the end of the spring semester, the head of the clinical program came out of her office to get one of the other professors 'for some help'. Turns out she had an undergrad student that was in tears because the prof had just told her she didn't score high enough on her final to pass her class, and as such was not going to be able to graduate. So here you had a PhD in psych, head of the department... and should KNOW this conversation with her student was not likely going to go well... and she couldn't handle the situation herself.
Whenever I watch the scene with Buffy lecturing Walsh about how she treated Willow, it always brings that back to me.

And they will be interested. And to be honest, I don't really care about most of other things that happen in this ep, most of them look like a filler to me. Including scenes with the actual leading character. That's how good this one is. Spike/Marsters is a natural scene stealer.

Spike absolutely WANTS to kill people. He just can't act on it without extreme pain. I love the comparison of erectile dysfunction and vampires being unable to feed. So funny. Wearing night vision gear and being suddenly exposed to bright light- like from a flare gun- makes you nearly blind for several seconds. Your vision is terrible for a few minutes after that too. Think of turning on a bunch of bright lights when you've been in the pitch-black for a long time (i.e. when you've been sleeping and you go to the bathroom at night), only a billion times worse.

The Initiative contains some brilliant comedy moments, from when Spike says could be 'cosmetic company' in answer to the lab rats reference. Then we also have the greatest fight in The Buffyverse, with Xander and Harmony bitch slapping and sissy kicking in slow motion, a homage to the Kung Fu series of the 1970s. We then have Spike in Willow's room, and the analogy to erectile disfunction, Willow says 'doesn't this happen to every vampire', and then Willow saying it must be me, and Spike saying he would bite her in a heartbeat, all this achingly funny. We now know about Riley and Prof Walsh, and their activity with The Initiative in what is like some kind of Bond Film complex. Riley is almost as awkward as Angel when it comes to chatting up women, but we can see how much he likes her when laying out Parker. An important episode the S4 as a whole.

Hi. Been watching your YT vids for awhile, love your reactions, the Spike/Buffy:Doof/Perry analogy is SO frickin' amusing. :) LOVE LOVE LOVED it.
I wanted to talk about your pausing/prediction concerns. I personally don't find it very concerning overall, as your predictions are a GREAT part of the process: both accurate and inaccurate, although of course the inaccurate ones are a lot more fun to play with. Hearing them is the core of what's fun in watching reaction videos: getting as close as possible to reliving the experience for the first time.
That said, the OTHER core is the emotional responses: the gasps, like in 25:48 for example. For that reason I wonder if perhaps your thoughts could wait just a minute or so, until the end of the scene, before pausing, because I could see the emotional reaction to the Professor Walsh reveal was about to get big before you got "distracted" via the pause. It prevented you from living in the moment.
If you're the type of person that just NEEDS to let thoughts out immediately, it's not a big deal, as it is enjoyable either way. I only bring it up as a sort of "middle road" between not pausing at all, which I personally find less fun, versus pausing a TON, which in the worst-case can cause the comedic/dramatic rhythm of a scene to get thrown off.

The GIles thing? It's fun - in the first three seasons - especially season 1 and 2 - Giles is portrayed as a very stereotypical 'Englishman' - there's even a shot of his home showing he has a wind-up gramophone instead of a hifi. He's portrayed as so old-fashioned it's practically ludicrous - this is supposed to be someone who was teenager in the 70s remember. From this season though - he's very much changed over to being a normal person - he's a got a TV, a record collection that Oz envies and has stopped wearing three-piece suits made out of tweed. I for one welcome the change in the writing. And the changing of the situation of employeed watcher to unemployed lay-about is fine - perhaps fascilitated this change in the character.

6:47 I don't think Giles has been lazy so much as lost. He's lost his purpose and doesn't know enough about how to find a new one to work up the motivation to pursue it. I think his passivity is him hoping that a new purpose -- or, better yet, in his opinion, the old one -- will come looking for him instead of the other way around.

Your reactions and enthusiasm is always appreciated and fun. Some context of the times might help with The Initiative and feelings towards the project. In the 90s and with the fall of the Communist regimes in Russia and Eastern European Countries, secret files and projects were discovered. The KGB(and aligned intelligence services) and military had been conducting many experiments, programs, and investigations into the paranormal and potential existence of the supernatural. Their goal was to see if it existed and how it could be used for military purposes. Also over the time from the late 70’s until this show, American agencies ( CIA and Military Intelligence) would be discovered as also doing the same. One of the most famous was how The Army would experiment with LSD on soldiers to see if they could unlock powers of the brain. These public disclosures plus conspiracy theorists were the foundation of The X Files having believably plots and stories. Many of the real life intelligence agencies used colleges, students, and experts for their research. So having The Initiative on a college located near The Hellmouth does not seem far fetched.
In Season 3 we know the police, a government agency, knows about the supernatural and that Snyder was brought in to be principal to maintain order and cover up supernatural events. Besides the Mayor( who we know was supernatural) his assistant Mayor was aware as well as some of the Mayors security. Now go back in your memory to Season 1, Episode 11 and the invisible girl. Sunnydale High was under surveillance and after Buffy subdues the Invisible Girl, 2 government agents take the girl away The last scene was the girl with other invisibles in class. The class was about how to assassinate and be a government killer. So ask yourself what is the purpose of The Initiative? You are thinking of Riley and his friends as students because of their age. Do you know the age of most American foot soldiers? They are mostly young men 18- 22.
You wonder about Giles and what is he doing. You have reacted to one of the most important themes of the season. Time and that no matter what we do, time advances and life will change. The last image of Season 3 was of Buffy and the Scoobys walking off together. Look at 7 episodes into the new year . Cordelia and Oz are gone. The library was blown up and now there is no meeting place. High school is over and Xander has no structured reason to interact with Buffy or Willow and Giles is aimless, drinking too much, and being Hugh Hefner. The show is at its heart about the journey for Buffy to become a strong independent , mature emotionally, and fully capable woman. High school seemed difficult to navigate but college represents life. Buffy is making mistakes but she learns and grows. Xander is in his basement looking for the purpose he found with Buffy. Finally we have Willow and she has her own discoveries and labors before her. Buffy can stake a vampire or kill a demon but time and aging can not be killed or stopped

    Are they doing anything worse?
First time I really thought about this more in depth. Thinking back to the history of Psychology and research experiments. A lot of research done even just 30 years ago by today's standards are considered highly unethical. In the past prisioners could bargin the length of their sentencing by "volunteering" in these experiments which is similar to what the Initiative is doing in a sense. So we might argue that psychological torcher is worse then Buffy's quick and easy method.

I think that the original intention for this season was for Prof Walsh to try to replicate the slayer, that's why the end episode with the first slayer is the way it is. You will also notice that Adam only gets introduced in the same episode where Walsh dies. He's clearly a replacement big bad for when the actress who plays Walsh wants out (Because she was given a bigger role in something else).

    • @samanthas8340

I think deputy mayor vs killer werewolf is a bit different in terms of victims. Just like the other humans that have died on the show like the swim coach and zoo keeper that we don't exactly address in the same light. The deputy mayor was a innocent bystandard at the time of his death while the others were actively conducting harm. Also Oz is almost more similar to Angel in a sense of not entirely human himself. We could say the same about Faith but the slight difference there is the mantle of power The Slayer holds. Idk about you, but I think it's pretty important to vet and be sure a person in high position of power is in their right mind. Faith was not exactly in her right mind or at least not fit for leadership. Instead, she was running away and avoiding responsibility. Not a quality most people want in someone weilding a position of power.

I don't think Spike believes that Buffy is behind the government or getting caught. HIs fixation with her just naturally leads to him blaming her for anything bad that happens which dates back all the way to season 2 "Sunnydale is cursed for us Pet, the Slayer and her friends see to that." Or something. So the other vampire was running from her, so in a bad guy's mind, that makes getting caught her fault. Spike will look for any excuse to blame her for anything. It's a way to remove accountability or admit fault of any kind.
As far as Giles, I think you're the onky reactor I've seen to get so worked up about Giles. I think a lot of us appreciate seeing him in this environment/era. It's good for his psychological flexibility, lol.
As for Riley, this might be his best episode, but he still finds a way to annoy me. The traditional gender role thing with him needing to protect her this episode.

Not being able to hurt people without pain and not *wanting* to hurt people are two very different things. Yeah, Marsters is incredibly charming as Spike and forgetting that the character is in fact a serial killer that has abused, assaulted and murdered people is a common thing in the fandom.
