Rescuing a flying-fox stuck under a pool fence: this is Wedgie

  • Wedgie is a skinny adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who got himself stuck in a glass fenced pool enclosure, and attempted a novel escape route.
He managed to get his head wedged under the fence and then flipped his legs to the outside of the fence and totally snookered himself.
He was actually quite easy to get out, but from the pix the MOP (member of public) sent me, I couldn't see the width of the gap between the glass corner panels, so I thought I may need some sedation in order to unwedge him. I did think though, if he got himself in there it was perfectly possible to get him out.
I didn't actually need the drugs to get him out - he was fairly cooperative in an exhausted kind of way and I just wrapped him and then slid him sideways then lifted his entire body up with his neck in the gap.
I do think he was most likely to be attempting to fly out and clear the glass fence, but hit the corner with his head above the gap and his body behind, and his head started dropping through the gap till he ended up at the bottom (see the vid to understand this).
Anyway after struggling to get out he managed to make the situation worse.
I called him Wedgie because he was wedged under the glass, but also because doing wedgies with swimming costume bottoms was a favourite and juvenile childish game when I was younger. (wedgies are when someone pulls your bikini bottoms (or your underwear) up, so it wedged in your bum crack - as I said - childish, but hysterically amusing if you weren't the victim).
He's survived a couple of days now though he's still a little wonky.
Get better soon Mr Wedgie (and get yourself fatter while you're staying at the human house of all you can eat buffets).
    I love survivors.

Normally I don't care for wedgies, but this guy had zero complaints and seemed like quite an amiable patient to have. If he did indeed wind up in that predicament in the way you hypothesize, then that's gotta be one of the all-time comically unlucky bat flights.

“Wedgie in the Human House of All You Can Eat Buffets” - I’d watch that B (for Bat) movie. (Who needs Bruce Wayne and man-toy batmobiles?) Boy did his life ever take two 180 degree flips, getting whacked on an invisible wall and stuck and then being borne away in soft cloths to the fabled HHOAYCEB. No wonder his head is still spinning. Great name, as always.

Omg we did the same thing here in the US when I was a kid! My favorite swimsuit had a fringed trim all around the top of the bottoms -- it was made of swimsuit fabric, but it was supposed to look like ti leaves, like a "hip hei" -- and one day, a friend of mine grabbed part of the fringe to give me a wedgie. . . and suddenly that whole fake leaf came off in her hand! 😱
She was horrified and apologetic, and I was seriously pissed off at the time, but now we laugh about it. It's so funny kids were doing the same thing in Australia! 😂

I met a beekeeper yesterday over a hollow branch containing the microbats was being hauled back up into a tree so they could continue their life and times. When the branch came down a beehive in the fork also came down, and the bees blamed everyone but themselves for this, stinging the bats and the humans indiscriminately, and this awesome bee keeper and rescuer came and calmed the bees so the bats could be rescued.
The beekeeper came back yesterday to see the batties raised back into the tree and we got talking and he was fascinating. I like the idea of bees and bee keeping, and apiarists and honey but it's never going to be my passion so my fascination is tangential to my real passion - but he was really interesting because he had great knowledge about sugars and glucose, fructose and the long chain sugars which some of the darker honeys have. Glucose is absorbed from your stomach and mouth and gums; fructose is absorbed from your upper gut and the medicinal honeys like manuka honeys have long chain sugars which are absorbed from your lower bowel and can be used to treat inflammatory bowel disease or keep it in remission. Interesting.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  2 роки тому +4

Bats can echolocate the glass because it reflects sound like water does.
The flying-foxes don't echolocate though - they navigate by sight.
The reason there are these glass pool fences is so the yard doesn't look so divided - because they present no visual barrier for the owners.

Quite the trick shot he managed in getting himself stuck like that! Glad he wasn't too difficult to get loose from there and that he's recovering in care and looks like he'll be a survivor. I really have to wonder if there's something pool owners could add to their fancy glass fences to make it easier for bats and other wildlife to see. My sister's dogs would run right into our glass patio door at full tilt when visiting, so we put a couple of decorative window clings at their eye-level and that was enough for them to register the door was there and not smack into it when they were excited.

    • @Megabattie

The whole point of the glass pool fences is that it doesn't interfere with the look of the backyard.

    Welcome back Death-fang!
Thanks Razor-fury. I missed you and the gang.
    So, what happened?
Oh, it was horrible! Wingless giant aliens captured me with their invisible barrier. They probed me, then they took me on a spaceship to the fattening farm to get me ready to eat. I finally seized control of a spaceship and was able to force them to release me. But the worst part, worse than the alien probe, worse than the spaceships, was they kept calling me "wedgie"!
A horrible fate for a warrior of the Sky-raider clan,
You're telling me! But this isn’t over, Razor-fury.
    What do you mean?

I had to take all the rescue stuff out of my car for this trip north that I'm doing - and really it was endless. I just kept pulling out more and more stuff. Eventually I left all the towels (there are only about 30 of them strewn around) and packed everything on top of them and used them to stop things rattling. I had so much to bring north (haven't done a trip for 2 years) that Lola was stuffed to her gunnels.

I put information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I put the fate of the animal if I know it, in the descriptions. I also put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
