I’m going to answer some questions in this pinned comment.
Why didn’t you go the vet immediately?
You can’t simply walk to a vet with a wild squirrel. So it took a few days because I worked with a specialist red squirrel rehabilitator in Stockholm who got me the vet appointment on my behalf.
Why did you release and not keep him?
Although the transition to the wild isn't going to be easy. It's better to do it when it's summer and still warm. If we did it in the Autumn and waited for him to be older, then the transition would be too stark since there's freezing temperatures. Also mothers kick out their kits when they are 10-12 weeks old. So he’s actually older than other baby squirrels. We could have waited the whole winter, but squirrels mate in their first year so it would actually be quite cruel to keep an animal enclosed. Squirrels can have large home ranges.
They can travel long distances to access different fruiting trees. And in the wild, Roo will have the correct diet. Squirrels in captivity can suffer from metabolic bone disease due to a lack of calcium and odontoma, where teeth grow in the incorrect direction and can cause havoc in their adult life (multiple surgeries because they can't maintain their constantly growing teeth). There are many pet squirrels on social media and I personally think the rehabilitators didn't work hard enough to prepare the squirrel for the wild. The squirrel return sick and they think that's it, it's a house squirrel. But the squirrels have health problems and get fat.
The wild will always be the best place for Roo.
    Aren’t avocados toxic to animals?
We were very careful to only give him the fruit and not the skin or stone which is toxic to anyone. A small piece of the fruit, every few days along with the rest of his diet was ok. The footage you’re seeing is the highlights of three weeks and may look like he’s eating lots of avocado. But in fact it made a small part of his overall diet. Lastly, if suffered from toxic poisoning, he would had diarrhoea, high temperature or fever which he didn’t have. His stools were normal sized and colour.

Thank goodness Roo recovered 🙏 thank you for your dedication to him 🙏❤️. I totally agree with getting him back to the wild. I know we will never know what affected him, but I wonder if he picked up a local squirrel virus or more likely bacterial flu (since antibiotics helped) from the old drey, or meeting up with wild squirrels that passed it to him. He had his mothers milk for a bit, but the replacement couldn’t fortify his immune system. He also wasn’t exposed to the germs in that environment until released. Thank goodness he returned to you and got well. Thanks for all you do and sharing with us 🤩❤️

Roo is a red squirrel - our native species. They are harmless and extremely endearing but they are now very rare.
Greys are an alien invasive species, which originate from North America. They are incredibly destructive and have almost wiped out our native red squirrel over most of England and Wales by competition and spreading squirrel pox. Please do no feed grey squirrels.

@ThePianoMan1953 you don't know me or the life I've led. It puzzles me why you can't be happy that a person had their eyes opened to the joys of nature and the amount of unexpected wildlife in their community. To me, this is something I'm grateful for no matter how or when it occurred in my life. That you criticize or judge me for finding such happiness makes me wonder why you would want to make me feel guilty or bad about this? Are you so miserable that you must try to make me feel
" small"? I will no longer reply after this. I will continue to appreciate the new way I see the world around me.
When you grow up not even being allowed to have a pet, much less being taken for a walk through the woods, no matter what age you learn to open your eyes to all the beautiful creatures in the world it should be celebrated.

Such a clever one, realising he needed help and finding his way back to his carers. Such a strong bond, but you saved his life three times already. Cats are said to have 9 lives, how wonder how many lives a little red squirrel can have. Dani, I hope you see this comment as it is my first but certainly not last. I found your videos recently and subbed immediately. I live in North Carolina, the southern US and care for a feed about 20-30 wild squirrels daily. One young lady I've named Squeeze has taken to me and knocks on my windows and waits for me daily. I couldn't figure out why she was so comfortable with me as opposed to the other squirrels, but soon realize she had made her nest on a little eve that overlooks my kitchen window, and I am a chef, so for her entire life she has been with me there while I cook and I didn't know it. I keep the kitchen window open with a screen. I now have taken the screen out and allow her to sit in the window as I cook. I thank nature for this special relationship, but will not invite her into my home as to keep her wild, even though I would love to squeeze her, which is why I named her Squeeze lol. On another note, I found you at a time in my life where I had lost inspiration and possibly become depressed. Your videos and you personally gave me Hope and Spirit again. I wanted to thank you for that. Even though you are so young, I look at you like a Jane Goodall mixed with Else Holmelund, Maurice Sendak, who do a series/ books called Little Bear and A.A. Milne from Winnie the Pooh. You have a gift for storytelling and art, but in a way that reaches into people's hearts and souls and restores a feeling of innocence, childhood innocence. I wanted to thank you for sharing that gift with the world and encourage you that whatever your plans were when you started this to be flexible. Know that you have a gift of helping people interact with nature in ways that endear them to the world, and that is an important responsibility but also a gift. Thank you for sharing with us Dani, you have quickly become my hero of a lifetime and not only inspired me but saved me from depression with your videos and storytelling, a unique gift that you so graciously share. Thank you for being a voice and eyes for nature. God bless you Dani. You and your partner and Roo and all the living things graced enough to be in your orbit. Yours, Meredith ❤🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️❤

It does matter. Dependency will only kill it.
(Edit: I should elaborate, dependency would keep it physically alive, as it is now getting food from you, however also killing it's ability to self-sustain and training the next generation of squirrels to also become dependent on human involvement, drastically altering the nature of the species.)

The whole idea of returning a squirrel to the "wild" makes no sense since squirrels live amongst people anyways. We use to have a couple of trees in our backyard in our old home and there were wild squirrels who lived there and often roam around in our yard. You can see them in parks and most residential areas. Just release the squirrel in your backyard and let him live in a nearby tree if he wants.

She knows each one and has given them names. She has food at the sliding glass door and when they come to eat they always come up the the glass, put both paws on the glass and say hi before eating. A couple of them talk to her on occasion, if they have something important to say. Bella is her favorite, and recently gave birth and with one baby in her mouth came up the the glass to it off. Eventually he moved very gradually into the woodlands behind the garden but still returned "home" every two to three days for extra food.. Now sometimes he still visits & will tap on the kitchen window!! Wild ones are far more more intelligent than we give credit foe. Thank you for helping Roo, every life is a precious spark.

We raised a Gray Squirrel that had fallen from a nest. When he was old enough to leave, we simply moved his wire cage outdoors and left the door open. After a few days, he ventured out. After two weeks he stopped coming back at night. He roamed our neighborhood and frequently perched on a branch and talked to us. Then he found a mate and we never saw him again.

I'm so so pleased that Roo made it through ok and doing great. I truly believe you should keep Roo as a kind of wild pet. Keep his enclosure, make it bigger but don't risk releasing him and losing him. Roo is so special and loved, he knows it and he loves you both. You have done an amazing job with him.

You know they won't do that. Even if he does come back regularly, he will learn to survive as a wild squirrel amd raise a family, or die trying. It has already been worth it for the love they've shared and the experiences both sides have had that both sides normally wouldn't get. And for us and everyone that watches this series. 💙💙💙

It must have been so worrying when he came back so poorly but, yes, he’s a fighter. Here’s hoping the second release will go well. Thank you for another lovely video that brightened up my Saturday with its beautiful colours and enchanting little fluffball of chaos that Roo is. Your relationship with him is beautiful to watch and the lengths you go to, to help him be the wild squirrel he’s meant to be. ❤

I started following you through this story and have been here since the second video. There is a selfish part of me that says keep him! Haha, but we all know that it's better he is wild and has the whole forest to explore rather than your backyard only. I would love to watch and follow Roo for the rest of his life, but it's very obvious that it's difficult to do that because he belongs out there.

When you said that after his release he could have run away, but he stayed and played chase for two hours, that spoke volumes of his trust and enjoyment of you. Continued high hopes for Roo's successful transition to the wild.

Amazing work! I hope he lives long and does well in the wild.
In the future if you find another baby squirrel it might help them survive better if you let them forage for food early on. You could hide nuts and pine cones around the enclosure or make little foraging toys out of toilet paper rolls etc. I know a lot of wild life rehabers do the same with wild animals to help them learn important foraging skills. And even if the animal can never be released back into the wild it really helps them to be engaged and use their brains

Hello Dani, I one of the few thousand people who view and participate on the wonderful online cams of the Coastal Brown Bears at the Books Falls @ Katmai National Park every year. Starting is early to mid summer, the Salon run starts slowly and then gets to full as the salmon return to where they were born 2 years earlier to spawn a new generation and the Brown Bears, Wolves, Eagles , and a fox or two will take advantage of the funnel effect of the waterfall to fish for the salmon.
It is Truly amazing to watch and get into and you're gonna LOVE IT . The most popular bears have names and or numbers and we are absolutely in love with them. I can not wait for when you share that trip ...
In the Mean time,,, YOU GO ROO and I agree, better to be free ... he can always come and visit :)

I think I've heard/read that more squirrels perish than survive their first year, and I'd imagine coming down with pneumonia is like a death sentence in the wild most of the time. Even if they survive the illness itself, they're sure to be incredibly weak after being incapacitated for several days. Poor Roo has been unlucky in so many ways..... but extremely lucky in others.

My wife and I found a baby squirrel in the middle of a road. Cars were passing over him. I got out and waited until the traffic slowed, I then picked him up in a towel and we took him home.
He was a little, little baby. My wife fed him through a syringe for quite some time. I ended up building him two cages. A tiny one at first, then a nice robust second one. He liked that one. :-) At 7 or 8 months we encouraged him to go to an adjacent woodland. Every few days he'd come home and I would feed him his treat - shelled walnuts. :-)
Then he would come home every two or three weeks. Then one day, he stood up, looked at me - turned around and flew like the wind as he headed for the woods. He never came back. For us it was really sad, His name was Lucky. We really loved that little guy. It's been 10 years and we still think of him. He may still be alive and be a grandfather. :-) I really loved Lucky - we played and played. Round and round those trees we'd play. Just like this lady.
