  • Part 1 of my 'Building a DIY Chicken Coop' series. In this video I will be framing the chicken coop walls, roof trusses and egg box. I'll go over the dimensions of the framing pieces, angles of the roof trusses and other details in case you might want to use this as inspiration for your own build. The following parts of this build will cover the sheathing, trim, doors/windows, roofing as well as the watering system, security features, rainwater harvesting and lots of other cool features... stay tuned!
    Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions - Joe
    And I also want to give a big thank you to the Home Depot Prospective and Ryobi Tools for sponsoring this build!

    A little more than a rectangle with triangles on top. I'd say it's pretty well thought out, and dealing with angles isn't always easy. I liked your idea of laying the 2x4 across the top to mark the angles on the rafters.

    Funny coincidence:
    I more or less built this coop. Modified where I needed but very similar. I originally planned for tin roofing but found ondura panels while I was in the store so decided to go that route. Looked Ondura’s video on here and who is demonstrating the install?! You! Haha. So funny. I did run into one snag. I installed over 18in oc purlins but ended up having to backtrack and install additional purlins for the ridge cap to install on to. Not fun. Other than that everything’s going pretty smooth. Very new to building - but your videos have been a great tool for me. I’m currently in the process of building this coop, just finished framing today. Quick question though, had you not had other plans for flooring, what type of plywood would you have used? I am in North Carolina so it’s very humid here. Thinking about going with a 1/2-3/4 inch exposure 1 grade pine (I think that’s the proper wording) but wanted to know your thoughts. I realize there are probably some better options but trying to keep this build under a gazillion dollars 😅

    Joe, I looked in the description for a cut list but didn't see one. Would you provide us with a cut list? I'm inspired by your design and would like to use it.

    Is there somewhere I can find your measurements for your coop? I am just starting out with chickens and really like the design of your coop. I watched the tour de coop video and I thought you mentioned you would put your measurements in the comments, but I can’t seem to find them.
    Thank you so much!

      Yep, they are either in the video in text boxes and also the description of this video. I don’t think I have any dimensions after part 3 or so. But the general dimensions in the first 3 parts will get you going. Thanks for watching😊🙏

    Can you tell me the exact barn door hardware set you bought for your chicken coop build? And where you got it? Thanks

    A little paste wax or soap will make those screws drive easier.

    Were you able to get it done before the price for lumber went sky high?
    Looks good by the way.

    How much was the wood?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 роки тому +2

      I purchased almost all of the wood for this coop build in December, as I had planned to do this build in December. But just kept putting it off. I think I paid around $3 per 2x3 at that time.... now it is about $6 per 2x3. And by contrast, last summer I purchased them for about $2.50 or there abouts.

    Hi. May i know what was the tool at 4:33 ? and is it necessary?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 роки тому +1

      That’s a finish nailer. Not necessary but just nice to be able to tack things together until I can get some screws in the wood
