Absolutely no bull crap! Just clear, concise instruction that even I can understand. I'm so glad you don't waste our valuable time with rhetoric and hyperbole. You da man!

Many have already said it, but I'm here to say it again - what an outstanding presentation. The camera work, editing and sound, along with clear, concise explanations for each step make yours among the BEST construction videos out there. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing, and for being the kind of teacher that makes learning FUN -
My words precisely!! You and I are cut from the same cloth….I have almost all the same tools and belt! Just bought the Diamondback belt. Light and tough as nails!! I got the remodels version- LOVE all the pockets!!

Very, very clear, I was able to follow every step with my speed square and a demo piece of wood. I am not building a coop or chicken mansion, but a free-standing awning at my front and back door. this has been the most simple version of a single angle roof I have been able to find. Thanks so much.
Best tutorial I've seen. You know it when you've watched it all the way through, then realized you've watched it before because there's already a thumbs up. Nice pacing, clear, easy to follow. Thank you!!
Excellent video, thank you. I had 4 books telling me to "do a birdsmouth" for the shed rafters without explaining how to do one. This video was exactly what I needed.

I love the way you have your carpenters helper in the out takes. Teaching kids how to work is one of a father’s most fundamental responsibilities. God job man
Out of all the videos Ive listen to this one makes the most sense and you do so well at explaining everything for someone like me that isn't that great with math. Really appreciate your teaching it will go a long way in helping me get though my project.
"oh jeez, I know what it's called..." Birdsmouth. BIRDSMOUTH! Really liked the video - this version of how to measure & cut a birdsmouth actually made sense.
Hi an excellent demonstration will help me immensely. I'm using this video to help me when I build a skillion porch including the purlins for the eaves, directly off my skillion conservatory. You are an excellent tutorial tutor. Thank you so much for helping me today I really appreciate it.
Thank you for posting this!! I am building a similar style run to the end of our coop and using this lean to style rafter. Your demo was better than the dozen odd prior ones I watched to get the moxie up to do this project. Like you, my daughters were "helping" oversee quality control. Going to cut these tomorrow and will definitely do a practice piece before cutting into my 2x6s.
Thank you so much for your video! You are a great teacher... you get to the point and make it easy to understand without going into a long, drawn out explanation. I've watched several other videos on how to install lean to rafters and the instructions were too drawn out, yours made is so easy to comprehend.
I am converting a shed to a hen house & adding an outside run. I loved the way you measured out a template, that's kinda how I do things too Making these cuts were so intimidating; so I was looking into pitch connectors (easy way out), but you just saved me a good bit of money. You were so detailed in how to do this, I think I can handle it now. Thank you so much for sharing this. ❤
I’m a chick but my dad taught me not to be afraid of a hammer. I thank you very much for taking the time to explain your process in making your leaning pergola. I plan to make a lean to that is two tiered and attached to my house.
I just stumbled upon your video, and glad I did. The way you explain each step in simple terms is outstanding, especially for those like myself with limited building experience. This video would have been a game changer for me when building my 10 x 24 firewood lean-to shed last summer. The idea of doing birds mouth cuts intimidated me, so I used hurricane ties instead. The way you explained it and the detailed use of the speed square (never knew how to use one) was excellent and I would have given it a go. I just kept shaking my head while watching this and kept thinking, I would have done a few things differently with my shed (like adding the purlins to accommodate a longer eave) cause you explained its so well. I have only found a few channel to subscribe to, and you have now been added to that list! Thanks, and looking forward to checking out your other videos.
I am honored to be on your sub list! don't beat your self up I defiantly went over board on this build (always do). Plus I knew I was going to move it around with the tractor so it needed to be strong. for a wood shed straps will work just fine.
Joe Simple awesome vid!!! Same here wish I saw this video before my build I too used hurricane straps on my slanted roof. I think the hurricane straps will hold just fine however next time bird’s mouth cuts for sure!
This was the easiest and most informative way to cut the birds mouth, shoulder cuts etc. All the others I have watched used complicated math. I can now cut these and get them right, thanks so much. Im a subscriber now!
You are a good teacher, your voice is calm, good personality, get the attention to the end, this is what a call "Lo mejor de lo mejor" (The best of the best).
This video made EVERYTHING makes sense now !!!!! Ten thumbs up... 5 stars.. whatever we’re rating this, it was phenomenally helpful !! And nice chicken mansion by the way!!!
Dang, I feel so stupid now. I'm 63 and by no means a carpenter but I've scabbed a few boards together in my years. I always wondered how to make the roof look nice and I guess I'm never too old to learn. Thank you, I'm in the process of building a simple 8x20 pole barn type lean to, this video will be watched at least 14 times while I try to replicate the rafters...thanks.
You do an excellent job explaining things , I enjoy watching others work now after having worked in construction many years ! A little trick an old time carpenter showed me is to keep a heavy old time rasp handy! I did a lot of birds mouth cuts and kerfs for ledgers . Knock the wood out with your hammer and then hit the birds mouth or notch cut with rough side of rasp and flip it over and smooth side rasp the shoulder to heel cut . Takes the little scrap out of the corner and levels things up nice on notches . The rasp will do in seconds what you did with wood chisel ! Try it ,you'll like it !
Thanks for the tips. I'm a complete novice when it comes to wood working and we are building an 10x8 coop, and I was stuck with the roof. This reference is going to be great.
What a great explanation. Especially the explanation of the speed square and the pitch. Use the speed square a lot and never knew that. First shed roof for me and the especially the rafters. Just made a lot of walls. Big thumbs up...
I’m building a woodshed, but have a couple of challenges on the roof pitch. Found your video, and it cleared it up on how to do right and easy. Thanks!
Great work, I had to comment on your video that explains what other have made it so complex, your instructions are simple and easy to understand. Thanks and God Bless
Thank you for explaining it in simple English, vs the over the top mathematical gibberish (to me) most of these videos have. I've used speed squares my whole life (not a framer), never knew that the mark on the other side of the 2 was the degree, and none of these other videos states that which is very simple... One has the "pythagorean theorem" to explain it instead. Well, if I knew wtf that was I wouldn't be looking at these videos would I? Appreciate you.
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge in a simple manner that almost anyone can follow. Hope you continue to share your experience. Much appreciated ✌️

I learned more in 14 minutes by watching this video than I have in a few days of reading and looking for tutorials. I really appreciate your teaching style and how you explain things in such a simple and understandable manner. Your description of the speed square helped me finally understand what the hell all of those lines and numbers actually mean. This video is exactly what I needed at the exact time I needed it!! I started a handyman business a year ago and recently landed my first lean-to roof job to cover a small deck. Other note worthy mentions: you don't come across as arrogant or seem to have an ego that is bigger than the universe like some others with tutorial videos. Thank you. This video really helped me gain the confidence to have a go at my first bridsmouth cut. I'm building a lean-to at the side of my house and this video has been really helpful.
Thanks a lot man I started building a shed on Saturday couldn’t finish it because of this cut 😂 I watched other videos too much math this was very simple for us beginners dummies
I believe using the diamond hole on your Swanson speed square could facilitate drawing the seat cut line on your birds mouth cutout. The Swanson handbook says it's a patented feature. Just learning and studying rafters and not experienced, just what I read. Haven't tried it myself. Could save a lot of time and seems easy to do.
Love the video. I assume that young lady at the end is your daughter. Adorable. Reminds me of when my daughter was that age. Any time i was working in the garage she had to have a board, some nails and a hammer. She doesn't want to do that any longer but, thank God she still likes to hunt with her old man. God bless you and yours.
This is great, I’m building a wood shed with a lean-to roof like yours. I’ve never built one before and now I’m sure I’ll be able to make the cuts properly. Keep up the fine work and thanks for sharing your experience!
I'm planning a "kiddo garage" for all their outside stuff and this is the type of roof I would like. Glad there are skilled people out there willing to share their experience with us all.
me too!!! Ive been trying to find a solid easy to follow roof tutorial for my "lean-to". Ans this guy nailed it. I think explaining the common 10 degree measurement is what made this "click" in my head.
Crown your boards the same direction and that direction should be upward so it doesn’t look like it’s going up and down going across the top from side to side.
@@troyna77 the ten degrees is for the 2/12 pitch and it is also for a metal roof so don’t use it for a shingled roof. Buy a speed square and use the common section and the pitch you use just look at the degrees below it and it’ll tell you the matching degrees when you’re lined up on your common pitch at same time so you’ll know how to set up skill or table or chop saws pitch.
Your clear and smooth way teach these aspects of carpentry makes for easy viewing and learning. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Learning a lot for when I build my first chicken coop.
Absolutely no bull crap! Just clear, concise instruction that even I can understand. I'm so glad you don't waste our valuable time with rhetoric and hyperbole. You da man!

simple, direct, no over the top tools that were given to him that most would not buy. This is the way to teach everyday people.

Best instructional video of How to cut a birds mouth for shed rafters!
The lightbulb clicked on in my head for the speed square tips too!
This is the clearest, best communicated training on birdsmouth i have seen (out of seven). Thank you.
Well explained. I’m not a tradesman, just a pen pusher and but this guy made it so simple that I think I can finally build my outdoor storage
Great video with clear and detailed instructions. Thanks for making and sharing 🙏🏼

merci beaucoup, heureux qu’il a été utile et vous avez pu comprendre
This is the best rafter cutting video on UA-cam. I’ve watched them all. You didn’t over complicate it and that helped so much!
Damn, quickest and simplest rise over run explanation I've ever heard.
Hey, glad you think so! Thank you.
😆 🤣 😂 way simpler than using mathematics and tables
Wow, now here’s a man who knows how to treat Chickens, good job!
Absolutely most logical, clear and concise instructions on a practical way of going about laying out a lean to roof.

Thank you for providing such great content! I have very little real carpentry experience but I'm building a greenhouse based on these videos.
