  • Part 2 of my 'Building a DIY Chicken Coop' series. In this video I will be adding the plywood sheathing, trim, doors/windows, roofing, hardware, paint and moving the coop to its home near the garden! I cover the general aspects of how I made the doors, windows, etc,..... but don't list all of the dimensions in the video itself. But I have listed those details below the links for the tools that I used!
Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions - Joe
And I also want to give a big thank you to the Home Depot Prospective and Ryobi Tools for sponsoring this build!
Here are links to the tools I used in this build:
RYOBI 18V ONE+™ HP Compact Brushless 2-Tool Kit:
    www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-ONE...
Ryobi 7 ¼” Sliding Miter Saw

    www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-ONE...
Ryobi HP Brushless 7 1/4" circular saw:
    www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-ONE...
    MATERIALS AND DIMENSIONS:
    Plywood for coop:
    4 - 4x8 sheets of 3/8 exterior grade plywood
2- 4x8 sheets of 1/2” or thicker OSB for roof deck
1x3’s for door/ window framing and corner trim
    8-10 pieces of 1x3” x 8ft boards
    Screws/nails used:
1 5/8” decking screws for plywood
16 ga 1.5” and 2.5” finish nails for nailer
1.5” washered roofing screws did roofing/flashing
1 1/4” pocket hole screws for door/window frames
3/4-7/8” screws to fasten from backside of plywood to 3/4” thickness of door and window frames.
    Door/window dimensions:
    Main door frame
    27w x 32"h
    Door
    21.75w x 26.75"H
    Window frame
    15.5w x 12.5"h
    Barn door
    35w x 38"h
    Poop door
    44w x 14"h
    Egg box lid
    41 1/8”w x 22.25” deep
    Egg box side door
    23w x 7.5"h
Note: both the egg box lid and front plywood are 3/4” that I had on hand. I recommend a thicker plywood for those parts than the 3/8” used on the rest of the coop end doors.
Interior frames that serve as a weather seal of the end access door and the side egg box door have a lip of approx 1/2” on the bottom and 3/8” on the sides

That was the one and only artist touch I added😂. I tried to have it fade and out the other direction to correlate with the coop coming out of the garage but I’m still learning this final cut software.

Good to see that you made this front opening on the egg box, I can confirm that it is much better than opening the roof, chickens are not scared when I open it and sometimes it's possible to watch them lay eggs. It's also better accessible for children when they want to be the ones getting eggs :), especially in case of raised chicken coop like yours.

Great video. It is really great that you could work on this in a garage and then move it to the site. You look like you were having way to much fun on that tractor, looked like you want one of your own. I know that it is hard to work on a corrugated roof but I think one of your large logos on that would look great, tuff to work it in and out of the ridges but still look nice. Your painter did an OUTSTANDING job. What do you listen to while you work… music, audio books, podcasts or ??? Thanks for sharing and you sound much healthier and rested in this video!

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  3 роки тому +1

Thank you Thomas! Yes I would love to have a tractor of my own... But I’d probably get in to some really big projects...haha. I’ve always joked that if I had a backhoe that I would dig a deep trench across my driveway just so I could have an excuse to build a bridge😂
And yes, my wife is an excellent painter... and really good at whatever she puts her mind to!
As for my audio choices. Usually a combo of podcasts and music with podcasts winning about 80% of the time. But when I’m welding or doing grunt work like digging, etc then I do more music. My podcast choices are literally all over the place in subject matter. Gardening, preparedness, variety shows, occasional politics, backpacking, hunting etc.... and even some really odd ones like ‘country squire radio’ which is a pipe smoking podcast(tobacco, not the other stuff😂).
Crazy.... in that I rarely ever smoke the pipe that I carved several years ago. But when I carved that pipe, I listened to the podcast kinda as inspiration and enjoyed the hosts and historical figures that they talk about. PS- I wouldn’t consider myself a smoker as it might be once or twice a year with the guys at a baby shower or get together( they do cigars and I break out the pipe)

Yes that is so true... haha.... they really don’t care about the coop at all. Just so long as they have some food water and shelter... and occasional garden treats😂

It’s gone up in waves here and there. But recently it’s slowed down quite a bit. I think it might have happened when I started backing up my videos on another platform called odyssey. It’s a block chain video platform. But hopefully I’ll get it to 500k so I can do some little celebration video or something weird😂

lol, your "haphazard" temporary chicken coop is nicer than 95% of the world's chicken coops!...and your new chicken coop is nicer than 95% of the world's *houses.* 😂
as always, amazing inspiring work, thanks for sharing. peace

Yeah, the haphazard one is all that’s really needed by these girls. But it’s my girls that want something that looks pleasing to the eye more than the chicks care about😂

Hi Joe, big fan of your work. Any chance we could have another update tour of your rain water systems/graden as you are approaching your wet season? Much appreciated.

Thank you Maccy! To be honest I’ve been holding out because I was waiting until I made an upgrade in my tanks. As I didn’t want to show the same things.... but I will keep it in mind. However I will be doing a gutter, rain pipe install on my shop and that cistern... since I had to uninstall it when I redid my awning. So perhaps that will be a good interim rainwater kinda video until I can get to doing another main system update😀👍

Oh my great build! I have something similar but just the bare shell. I'm struggling with this project. Would you sell the templates for the egg box?? Like literally the template for me to cut out . Lol, sounds silly but I'm SERIOUS !

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  3 роки тому +1

Thank you! As for a template.... I don’t know if you need that. The first video gives the frame dimensions and then the trim and plywood is all just covering that framing.

Very nice job . Do you provide a place for the chickens to scratch since you put the fencing on the ground to keep out the predictors?

I wish I could build something like that but I don't know much about building and I have most of the tools I think but I don't have like a table like that where I can clamp things down or I don't think I do have some clamps. I live in the city limits of Florida and we're allowed to have chickens but I'm only renting so if I have to move I don't want anything too big to have to move or heavy. So I don't know if I want to use anything with two-by-fours. I'm kind of using old fencing and things like that. Kind of winging it. I just need something simple to lock them up in at night. I do like how you did that sliding door.
