About five months after the Palma de Mallorca Interzonal (1970) qualifier was held, the first stage (the quarterfinals) of the Candidates matches was held in four cities in May 1971. In Vancouver, Canada there was a 10 game match between Mark Taimanov and Bobby Fischer, played May 16th - June 1st. Fischer sensationally won the match with a perfect score of 6-0, thereby proceeding to the Fischer - Larsen Candidates Semifinal (1971). After the event, Taimanov was reported to have said, "At least I still have my music." He wasn't being merely melodramatic: the consequences of this loss were to haunt him for years. In an interview with Joel Lautier, Taimanov later recounted:
"Until the match with Fischer in 1971, everything went smoothly in my chess career. This dramatic match changed my life into hell."
"As Fischer himself admitted at the time, the final score did not reflect the true balance of strength. The terrible feeling that I was playing against a machine which never made any mistake shattered my resistance. Fischer would never concede any weakening of his position, he was an incredibly tough defender. The third game proved to be the turning point of the match. After a pretty tactical sequence, I had managed to set my opponent serious problems. In a position that I considered to be winning, I could not find a way to break through his defenses. For every promising idea, I found an answer for Fischer, I engrossed myself in a very deep think which did not produce any positive result.

I like to watch Agadmator's video in 144p as it consumes far less bandwidth. Only issue is you can't read the quotes.
I have a 4k tv, and I can definitely see the difference with my human eye, compared to 1080p (hd / 2k)

The pain when you play beautiful attacking chess and other online player is using engine to defend properly can be felt in this game.
Its funny you say that. Last year I encountered a lot of cheaters on both chess.com and lichess.org. I think chess.com is far worse as they are probably reluctant to ban players to earn those fees. I closed my chess.com account as a result of my frustration with cheaters there.
Anyway, I noticed this year I have seen very few cheaters on lichess.org. I can't be sure its due to the actual number of cheaters going down or a result of my rating going up 300+ points on various time controls. Its nice to play online against players whose rating matches their skill level.
i stopped to play for the same reason. and even if i report the player who cheats, his account is not closed, coz anyone can play 100% best move game with every move in less than 10 seconds.

Been watching daily since about 3k subs early summer last year. I stopped watching matojelic's videos and the other videos I watch are from the chessnetwork, st. louis club, or Atlanta club. But I rarely go to them anymore unless I'm looking for a specific lecture.
I usually don't watch re-runs but considering how my vast chess knowledge has increased this remastered, collectors edition is worthy of my time. Thanks!

I read a chess book back in the 1980s describing this line but it didn't demonstrate how it should be followed up as Antonio did here. I have only now thirty five years later began to deploy it in my repertoire against the KID.

I really appreciate getting a postscript on this game. The first video raised a lot of questions, and as a critical point in one of chess's most legendary stories, it deserved this extra positional analysis. Perfect.

Perhaps there could be a 'Fischer Number', akin to the Erdős Number, or Degrees of Kevin Bacon... how many connections does it take to get from you to Fischer? For instance, Ben Finegold's Fischer Number is 2, since you go from him to his dad (Ron Finegold), then from his dad to Fischer... his dad played Fischer, and he obviously has played his dad. Whether this would be in tournament play, or just ad-hoc, would be another criteria... 'what is your tournament Fischer number?'.
Mine is 2. I played the late great GM Anatoly Lein in the US Open (Round 10!) in 1978. He played Spassky (as well as a few others who played Fischer) a few times in the USSR Championships.
That would make your Fischer number 3... you to Lein, Lein to Spassky, Spassky to Fischer.
About 4k or 8k, it depends on the users monitor, if the user has a 1080p monitor, then there is no difference between 4k and 1080p, but if they have a 4k or a higher resolution display, then the difference is noticeable

It depends on the screen size/pixel density, 4k is 4x denser in pixels than 1080p (if the screen size stays the same, of course), and that is quite noticeable
It also depends on the source material authoring and whether it is a still or video.

It is a myth that the human eye cannot perceive 4k agadmator. Our eyes don't perceive in resolution and having a higher pixel density is useful for larger screens as well as screens closer to the face. There's diminishing returns with distance and size, but there's definitely a benefit to quality with having 4k!

Hey agadmator, i'm a 21 year old guy from portugal who follows all your videos. I started 1 year ago and I love chess ever since. Anyway, I recently started to watch a serie called "The Blacklist". I don't know if you know it, but it is about a criminal mastermind who turns himself in to the FBI and he has a list of the most dangerous people on earth. Together with the FBI they try to catch them all. On season 2, episode 11, the main character makes reference to a game that occured in 1972, bobby fischer against spassky when bobby sacrifices a bishop. I would like you to check that out because I'm not really sure if you already covered that game and I would love to see you doing it. Thanks for the amazing channel. Keep the good work.

At around 23:03min you show Fischer should play ...Bxf6 and you follow up saying white has an easier position to play out the game, but instead black can play ....Bg4! attacking the queen, if Qxg4, Nxf6 and black is winning. Followup moves might be Qh3+, Nh7 blocking the check, Rd1 Bxc3, bxc3, e3! Rd7 Qe4 Qh6 Rg8 and white has no attack left.

@10:00 Go Player here. I have had rare cases where after thinking for a long time I came to the conclusion that my candidate move just doesn't work. Typically, i then chose another move very quickly which can be almost as bad as using the flawed one. It seems to psychologically difficult to go back to thre drawing board and spend even more time to properly evaluate other moves after wasting so much time.

The review of this game in Chess Life and Review, which I read when I was 27, quoted Fischer as saying, "If Taimanov had played Q-h3 I would have resigned."
Well that would have been silly because it was still defendable.

The resolution depends on the size of the screen and the amount of pixels. Obviously on a big screen with many pixels you will see the difference bedween 1080p and 4k

Chess history should be broken down into two basic eras: Pre-com and Post-com (Pre-computer and Post-computer). That would settle the G.O.A.T. argument with Fischer being the greatest Pre-com chess player and Kasparov or Carlsen being the greatest Post-com chess player. If one wanted to expand the era concept, Morphy would be the G.O.A.T. of the Romantic Era; Capablanca would be the G.O.A.T. of the the Positional Era; and Alekine would be the G.O.A.T. of the Ruskie Era.
it's funny what you said about the deep think and not finding better moves than the one you thought of pretty quickly. now i am not a good player but i thought king move to h8 quick and my thought was it makes it so the knight isnt pinned and the queen isnt in as good an attack spot, but then i started looking around at a few other moves trying to figure out if they could be countered harshly.

We have to remember that Fischer was also a regular in psychological warfare. Fischer knew that Q-H3 was a losing move for him but he must've played K-H8 so stoically that Taimanov could not think for himself in that moment. I bet you Fischer for the entire 72min had the same smug face that never gave Taimanov any hope so he figured that it must be true there was no other better option than the move he made. Fischer went to war. He didn't just play a game. It was no holds barred for Fischer every match.
I notice in this saga you have never point out yet (might have missed it) that is in this move that we have a completely new game.
The more games I see the more I am convinced that Fisher is one of three the most accurate players of all times...
Who are 1 and 2 according to you? I would have to say Paul Morphy was 1 and Capablanca was 2. Just my opinion.
In the 1973 USSR chess championship - "The strongest of all" - Taimanov played the same line against Spassky, but Spassky improved Fischer´s play and crushed Taimanov brilliantly.
Lol- How long one needs to study a position to see the path depends greatly on the caliber of the player, yes? I played against Tarjan in a simultaneous and got him to accept a draw. Before he accepted, he said, "You have the better game". I could feel that it was but I COULD NOT see it. A month later I woke from sleep with the solution.

I have a 1440p ultrawide monitor and the difference between 1080p is striking. We have a few 4K monitors at work and you can definitely see the difference. So not sure what you meant that you can't see 4K. You most definitely can.

In the round 7 Caruana blundered a winning position against GM Dominguez I believe. The official commentary of the GCT is fine, however, I'd love to see your take on some of the positions ;)

Who told you that the human eye can't see 4K? That makes as much sense as asking how long is a string.... What matters is pixels per degree of viewing angle. Pixel size and viewing distance are the determining factors. Number of pixels on a display means nothing by itself....

How ironic that the move Taimanov missed is very close to the move Fischer saw in his Mozart's Symphony game, again against Spassky.

Agadmator, I hope you meant 1080p instead of 180p, unless you want to go back to ASCII graphics like in the 1970s. By the way, you can certainly perceive the difference between 1080p and 4K, if you only have a 4K monitor. Trust me, once you get used to it, 1080p looks so old and low res.
Chess board is the same in 180p and 1080p. But yeah, I meant 1080p :D I dunno, I heard experts say a human eye will be unable to spot it most of the times, without an adrenaline rush or help of drugs :D
Bill Gates once said that nobody will ever need more than 64K of RAM. Don't believe those experts! Get a 4K monitor and experience it for yourself. You will laugh at 1080p video after that, it's like getting a new pair of glasses. You will not be able to go back to 1080p without thinking that it's so old and low-res.
