    About five months after the Palma de Mallorca Interzonal (1970) qualifier was held, the first stage (the quarterfinals) of the Candidates matches was held in four cities in May 1971. In Vancouver, Canada there was a 10 game match between Mark Taimanov and Bobby Fischer, played May 16th - June 1st. Fischer sensationally won the match with a perfect score of 6-0, thereby proceeding to the Fischer - Larsen Candidates Semifinal (1971). After the event, Taimanov was reported to have said, "At least I still have my music." He wasn't being merely melodramatic: the consequences of this loss were to haunt him for years. In an interview with Joel Lautier, Taimanov later recounted:
    "Until the match with Fischer in 1971, everything went smoothly in my chess career. This dramatic match changed my life into hell."
    "As Fischer himself admitted at the time, the final score did not reflect the true balance of strength. The terrible feeling that I was playing against a machine which never made any mistake shattered my resistance. Fischer would never concede any weakening of his position, he was an incredibly tough defender. The third game proved to be the turning point of the match. After a pretty tactical sequence, I had managed to set my opponent serious problems. In a position that I considered to be winning, I could not find a way to break through his defenses. For every promising idea, I found an answer for Fischer, I engrossed myself in a very deep think which did not produce any positive result.

    When it’s ok to use f6:
    1). Immediate win of significant material.
    2). Strategic defense outweighs normal weakening of the king position.
    3). You’re playing your kid brother or sister and letting them have a chance.
    4). You’re creating a new type of tornado and the Fujita scale isn’t good enough at F 1-5.
    5). You’re Bobby Fischer.

    Seems to me that Fischer wears down his opponents with best defense. Even when his opponents are in winning positions they run out of energy trying to figure out how to break down Fischer's defenses.

    Amazing game - Taimanov seemed to already have early onset 'Fischer Fever', an actual phenomenon that occurred during Fischer's peak playing period from the mid 1960s into the early ’70s, when Grandmasters literally felt ill just having to play against him and would consequently blunder relatively simple positions.

    All six games were played almost flawlessly by both players. Fischer did say that every game against Taimanov was a struggle. I think he had an easier time with Larsen. Looking forward to those games.

    I always knew the result of the match - 6:0. Therefore, always thought that Taimanov was so much weaker in that match. Now, after watching these games I can say that difference between them was rather small. Taimanov played in a good style, and result could be easily something like 3.5 - 2.5. It is funny to read comments about Fisher destroying Taimanov, especially in the games where Taimanov had initiative all the game and one blunder decided the outcome.

    • @lucase.crusader1196
      @lucase.crusader1196 4 роки тому +2

      Absolutely true. It doesn't mean Fischer wasn't a great player, but he didn't destroy Taimanov. I'd say this match doesn't actually represent Fischer true skill tho...

    • @larrylindgren9484
      @larrylindgren9484 3 роки тому +12

      Let's see Fischer didn't lose a game. Didn't draw a game. Won 6-0. Fischer ripped him up. Sure you could say if. And well you know had he..... Fischer still won 6-0. Against a very good player. So yes Fischer destroyed him. Whether Taimanov chocked away every game In the end it was still 6-0 in a tournament where the players were far from chopped liver so to speak. Fischer simply streamed rolled right through to winning the title. Losing 3 total games where one of those loses he didn't show up. So you could say Fischer lose 2 total games while winning a world championship against some of the great players of the time.

    I watched these games at the time. I also replayed them with the annotations in magazines at the time. I did not fully appreciate how well Taimanov played and how he really blundered to hand Fischer the staggering scoreline. I cannot wait for the similar treatment of the Larsen games as I suspect he also did better than I had thought at the time. Excellent series.

    What if at the end, the move that made Taimanov resign, after Queen to d4 check and then Rook to f2 blocking, instead of Rook a1 check, Rook to f8 attacking the pinned peice? Doesn't that work as well or am I missing something?

    General Question for all chess players:
    I'm fairy good at classical chess, I will sometimes make a few inaccuracies but nothing major. But when it comes to rapid or blitz chess I just fall apart and blunder every other move, any advice on how I can improve under time pressure? Or it it just down to practice?

    • @bek1445
      @bek1445 5 років тому +2

      GJ_Jenko It mainly comes down to practice for me. You'll eventually play enough games to memorise some opening lines (or you can learn them) which will allow for you to spend a bit more time during critical moves. This is just me though and others might be different.

      Hammer away at stockfish with random openings. you'll get crushed 80 straight games then hold it off for 20 moves then get crushed.

    An English word that might be useful for you is "troublesome." I thought you'd use it at one point, when you couldn't find the word to explain that one player would have a problem if something happened. "This position is troublesome for black," for example. Thanks for the game coverage, very enjoyable.

    You make such slight verbal errors,
    I notice them, but they don't matter because I know what you meant.
    All in all you go through very intense games within minutes, showing many different variations.
    It's impressive, I'm obviously no great but I do solve your puzzles alot .
    Intuitively without pausing the video. I just react..
    That being said, has improved my game 10 fold.. I don't pause, I just go with my gut..
    Thank you for everything you do

    Unimaginable.....I went over the game with the help of stockfish and in my opinion, Fischer was slightly outplayed, only to have Taimanov make a 1400 level blunder...Psychology....he was mentally drained keeping up with Fischer and faltered...As I have always said, Chess is a game of mistakes especially below 2300 and even in Grandmaster games..
