    The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
    The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.

    This seriously is the most epic match ever. Fischer promoting to a queen, a pawn sacrifice, to get a shot at winning the match because Spassky was so low on time. And him play the end game so excellently after all that home prep.... This is amazing amazing chess. Knowing the history leading up to it too! Thank you Antonio. You're such a fucking awesome commentator, and your hard work and passion for these matches is really inspirational.

    While Fischer dashed for his car, Spassky remained glued to his seat. A sympathetic Lothar Schmid came over, and the two shifted the pieces about with Boris demonstrating his careless mistakes. The two were left wondering how Bobby could have squeezed a win from a position which a night of competent analysis by a renowned Soviet team had showed to be a guaranteed draw.

    This was Fischer's best game in the world championship, better than symphony of placid beauty (game 6). Spassky could not believe that he had lost the game. Audiences thought they were shaking hand as game was drawn. Whole Soviet team analyzed adjourned game entire night and a draw was guaranteed by them. This really shows Fischer's superiority over chess players of that era.

    • @NationalSportsEntertainmentNSE
      @NationalSportsEntertainmentNSE Рік тому

      Before that they actually thought the handshake was a Bobby resignation I believe. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure they were positive Bobby “blundered” away the Game.

  • @Driulinkin
    @Driulinkin 4 місяці тому +1

    The thing that's so fascinating about this world championship is that Spassky was an absolute unit, dominating the game, and then comes Fisher and makes him shiver in his boots with a level of play never seen before.

    This was (for me) the best game of the match. It was the longest, most complicated and difficult game of the match. Fischer strained every sinew and took this ending to it's limits, which was typical of his style. Neither player played it with the accuracy that the position demanded - how could anyone ? This type of ending would blow a fuse, even with the strongest chess program:

I watched the PBS feed with Shelby Lyman giving analysis, and the next morning played through all of the moves published in the Minneapolis Tribune about three or four times, and I waited with bated breath for the sealed move to be revealed ... Spassky asked how Bobby could win with his only rook trapped, but the comment ignores that Spassky’s bishop is also effectively trapped by trapping the rook, and more significantly, Bobby had FIVE passed pawns. “That’s a lot” is putting it mildly. Spassky seemed to make several wasted moves in the end game and it’s because he didn’t seem to consider there was even a threat. Bobby taught him, and indeed the world, that there may be threats you aren’t perceiving.

    20:55 rook to d1 is move 69. Brady says "On the 69th move, obviously exhausted, Spassky blundered. When he realized his mistake, he could barely look at the board, turning his head away several times in humiliation. Fischer, after moving to collect Spassky's gift, sat back in his chair, staring at the Russian, studying him. For a long moment, he didn't take his eyes off Spassky. There was just a bit of compassion in Fischer's eyes...."

      Nope because a rook will definitely be overwhelmed hehehehe so people tend to avoid it.

      He had the power and he used it! Except for the ridiculous demands at the earliest parts of the match Fischer’s ideas were all for the good of chess. Eliminating draws helped the spectators stay interested. More money-well everyone benefited. His shot clock is still used. He wasn’t crazy he became totally anti-Semitic and somewhat paranoid as EVERYONE used RJF! I believe that virtually every chess fan would jump for joy if some “Lost” games of Fischer’s were discovered. He brought more change to chess than any GM and he’s still idolized today. He’s UA-cam and Chess gold!!!

    there are So many variations in chess even a team of Russian masters could not understand many of Fischers moves.He was that far ahead of anyone else,including kasparov,carlsen all of them!! thats why he won 72% of his games and was a Super blitz player as well an that is NOT counted in his overall total!!! carlsen won 62% kasparov 68% and bobby lost Most of his games at 15-16 years old the first year 1958 in Russia!!
