Kids in preschool have routines and are responsible for putting their belongings in their cubbies when entering the classroom, cleaning up the toys after playing, and throwing away their garbage at snack/mealtimes. It's great when parents continue this at home.
I am so glad that you said some brains don’t like clutter. My friends criticized me for cleaning up toy clutter. I always felt guilty, like a bad mom. I guess it was self-care during years when i got very little self care. Thank you.
Hi, I am a mama to five kids ages 16-7. I become super overstimulated with visual clutter. I wanted to share this bit of encouragement- I did and do much of what is explained in this video and many days it felt like “wow, this just isn’t sinking in.” Well, it eventually does. My 16 year old now actively notices that he’s overstimulated when the house gets disorderly. Win! And this brings the new season of balancing the needs of little ones (who are mostly oblivious to their mess) and teens (who need things in order).
“I am not looking to erase the presence of children from my home, I am simply looking to find a balance where the chaos of their stuff doesn’t impact my own mental load”. THIS!!!! Thank you for articulating it! I’m not trying to create a monotone, rigid, empty, joyless home - I just want the canvas to inspire creativity not stifle it because there’s no room for thinking, feeling and experiencing due to clutter.
I also had four kids in 6 years and did these things to keep clutter away. Common areas typically do not have any toys at all. Also no eating or drinking outside of the kitchen dinning is a game changer.
Hi Kallie, I can’t believe you’ve made it this far and have done such a great job with your kids, and still manage to make us some great UA-cam videos. I remember when I was six years old and my mom had four kids and pregnant with our fifth sibling, a beautiful baby boy. He was 8 pounds and 9 ounces so she was “really pregnant”, if that’s even a word, or words. I think you know what I mean. I remember writing to you and telling you how much I love watching your family grow. Also, about me helping my mom hang up clothes. I would bend over into the laundry basket and get a diaper, yes it was the days before pampers. Also she had glass baby bottles that she washed then boiled in a wire basket for sterilization. That was 1966. I’m 64 now and remember it like yesterday, so I have no doubt all of the things she taught us (repetitiously) eventually stuck. And, those are happy memories. So, now, I’m wondering, what are some of the tips you can share with me about how to do things with back pain? Did you suffer from back pain in your third trimester? Thank again for sharing your beautiful babies and family with us. This is a great video. One of my all time favorites. Everything you said in this video is so important and so true. And, someday they will grow up and take care of you. ❤❤❤❤
Finally an influencer that says kids don’t need a toy room (a full room dedicated to just kids toys!) when did whole toy rooms become a thing? Is it wealthy people doing that? Influencers only? A cultural thing/certain race? Overconsumption? That was never a thing when I was a growing up
I had a play room when I was an only child. And there were toy rooms at our grandparents houses. If you have room for it, I say go for it. I think kids sleep better in clean and less chaotic rooms. Keeping the toys elsewhere is my goal once we have the room.
As a grandparent, I like the idea of having the kids' stuff all in one place. When the children visit, some toys may be brought out of that room to play, but when it's time for them to go back home, the toys need to be put back in the room and hopefully back on the shelf or in the closet. Our daughter used to have a specific time in the afternoon for snacks and if the children wanted a snack, they needed to clean up the toys first. (Also must clean up one toy to 'make room to play' with another toy thereby making less mess.)
You're absolutely right about letting kigs see you cleaning (and participating). When my mom was raising me, she usually cleaned when I was already in bed. She (still) considers cleaning and tidying the least possible activity, so she didn't clean much and we never did it together. So I had to learn the art of cleaning, organizing etc. the hard way on my path to adulthood.
I had been taking part in The Clutterbug 30 day Declutter challenge this month and Cass says take 5 minutes to get rid of five items! I have been able to stick to this 30 day challenge!
Woohoo, so am I. At least I'm trying. I did good the first week everyday, then thought I could do several over the weekend, it would be easier. Did I? Nope. But, I will complete this challenge, come hell or high water! Good luck to all.
@@terrig2298 Good luck to you as well! I missed yesterday and I'm not sure about today! Tomorrow maybe 15 minutes of cleaning! That and I don't have a car!
💯 Every point you made. We have one wicker chest and one armoir for toys so they can easily help put them away. Few if any toys in their rooms, but books yes. Fewer but well organized helps kids play longer ! Yes ! Kallie, you’re such a great help. Congratulations on your beautiful family.
GREAT VIDEO! This is exactly how I feel most of the time. And when I spend extra time cleaning or tidying instead of playing with my kiddo, I remind myself that I need a (relatively) clean and tidy space in order to be my best self and bring my best self to my kiddo. ❤
I know reading kids is tough but so rewarding. I love how you’re instilling good habits with your kids. I know it’s exhausting but 20 years down the road your future self will be so happy when they don’t have to call home to ask how to run the washer. I loved seeing your daughter Chuck the clean plate in the drawer and close it. Seeing your son vacuum and our his boots away. Keep up the good work. Your little humans are wonderful. P.S. I too had a rock collection in my drawer under my socks so my mom didn’t see them. Turns out I’m a crafty minded person. Rocks can turn into anything with a little paint. ❤❤
I agree with this person and also love seeing your little girl dump the food in the rubbish bin and then the plate in the sink. She didn’t get all the food off the plate but she will get there.
One thing you said that hit home for me is "Allow your kids to see you clean". When I was growing up, I never saw my mom clean. We always had a neat, tidy, and clean house, however, I honestly didn't know how it got that way. My mom ALWAYS cleaned when we were at school or asleep. Guess what - when I got my first apartment, I didn't know how to clean or that it was something that you really had to manage daily. Another good thing is to let your kids "help you clean". Will it be clean to your standards? NO. Will it be frustrating at times? YES. Let them do it anyway. My 6-year-old autistic grandson LOVES to have "jobs". When I clean he always wants to help and I let him. I tell him why I'm doing something, show him how I do it then step back and allow him to take over. There have been times when I've learned a shortcut or two from him. Kids can/do teach us things every day.
I have no idea how you produce as much content has you do, Kallie, with 4 Littles. I sometimes feel guilty watching your videos bc I can't stop thinking that. You must be much better than I am at reigning in the chaos! Anyway I've been Swedish Death Cleaning a ton. I can't believe how much better I feel with less inventory. I can breathe better, sleep better, and have more free time, with less stuff to manage. I love your channel bc I learn so much from you, even though I'm probably twice your age! 😂
You are such a good momma. I sure wish I had had your videos and guidance when I had three littles at home. I watch and learn to help my daughter when the time comes 😊
These tips are all really great! I wish I had you to watch when my kids were young! My grandkids are being raised this way and it is amazing how much they can do for themselves when we encourage them to do so. No, it might not be to our standards, but they are learning and it will get better with time and age.
My kids are in their 20s, seeing their frontal cortexes finish is so rewarding ! It takes time and much repetition but they do get there ! In time for their own kids to scramble their brains !
This video, it's like listening to a wise, experienced future version of myself talking to me! I don't want to erase the presence of my kids, but I also don't want to look at a bombsite every day! Your kids are younger than mine but you have twice as many (soon) so I bow to your experience 😊 I know for a fact we have too many toys and need to address this before Christmas. They just don't use them it's so pointless having all that stuff take up space. The grown up areas of the house are better, but only because I control them 😂
Thanks for another great video of yours! I really appreciate your mindset and your general approach to take out some pressure of this whole ‘I need to run a perfect home for my family’ thing. Have to implement more designated spots for things as this works great already with the kids toys in the living room ❤☕️
This is so good and it's not rocket science, i wished i had some of these tips when my daughter was little, she is now 22 but i still love learning things, i see so many family members struggling with this to the point that i literally can't go into there house because it's not clean.
Wowww that's so true. I used to settle n settle and the kids used to pull out everything all over again within an hour! So then I finally realised I should do it for my peace just before their bedtime so I can wake up to a mess free room! 🎊
Our kids are grown, but we have grandkids now. I've gone through baskets and bins for their toys. Recently we got a 2x4 Kallax unit from IKEA. Set the long way, with 4 bins on the bottom row. Their toys are in there. It looks when they are not here and after they are and clean up, it looks nice again.
Great video! I finally got to see a picture of Opal-adorable! Great set up so all can be found quickly with designated areas. Never too early to teach cleaning routines! Cute!
You really do a great job ! You manage your time so well then you’re accomplishing so much so quickly. I wish I had as much energy as you. It probably has to do with my older age 😂
Hope this finds you and baby #4 doing well and getting some much needed rest! As a long time mom of 1 (yep 1) I am always amazed at women who have more than 2. Mainly because after having had a C-section and knowing I would have to have another if I wanted more I basically said No Way Jose! And being military and moving around with a bunch of kids wasn’t something I was prepared to do. Maybe having a couple of kids instead of just one would have forced me to be organized. Or it could’ve gone the other way and I would have a bunch of sloppy kids. Ugh! What a hideous thought. God bless you and your beautiful family!
I have multiple spots for toys in the house. We have a two story and I think the best I can do is keeping a dedicated space in each room at this point.
Both my kids were very messy when they were smaller and when my son was 12, it was like someone flipped a switch and his space hasn't been messy since. It was the weirdest thing. My daughter, on the other hand might not grow out of her messiness but I'm still hopeful.
Kallie can you share your playroom floor mats? I’ve been searching for neutral ones FOREVER and those look perfect. Also messaging you on IG bc now I’m hooked
I raised three children, so I totally agree about the cluttering gathering fast. Now it's only the two of us. As my husband has gotten older, he is causing as much clutter as the children did together. He feels like he's got to have everything right there within arms reach. It drives me nuts!! I am a person who thinks that every thing in my house has a place, out of sight with no cluttered up dining table, end tables, night stand, etc. But he has his end table cluttered, his night stand cluttered and if you could see the table that we eat at would make you cringe because it does me. If he had his choice, my kitchen countertops would be cluttered but the kitchen is my domain and off limits to him and don't think I've not told him that. I can handle a tad bit of clutter in my older age but his clutter is getting under my skin. It's just laziness and ridiculous.
Different peoples brains work differently though. Plus with aging forgetting where you put things can be an issue. Maybe you can come up with a compromise? Like a cute container to put his things in ?
@@PinkRose0910 This is what I was going to say, too. It might not be just aging. Maybe he has ADHD or some other type of neurodivergence? Either way, calling it laziness does no one any favors. Like you said, maybe they can compromise. I'd recommend they watch Clutterbug and figure out their individual organizing styles, then they can find ways to compromise that work with both of their brains.
Hi! Thanks for all the tips. I would like to know where to purchase the zipper bags that you put puzzles and games into when you remove them from their original boxes. Thanks.
This was all very sound advice. I liked this better than her video that was saying kids need very few toys. I completely disagree, but kids need *organized* toys, and this video really hits on that. 👍👍🙌
Kids don’t need a lot of toys. They are happier with less toys. My daughter was happier when we had moved all of her stuff out of her room for some remodeling and had about 3 things left to play with. That was 3 and half years ago and she still talks about how much she likes having nothing in her room. She gets overwhelmed. But I don’t know how to keep things down without taking away some stuff she loves. She loves her Barbie’s, legos and crafts, all of which tend to make a big mess.
@@ritadyer9295 I think of kids' toys like I think of kitchen tools. You probably don't need a fancy gadget for everything, but you'll make better meals if you have a variety of pots and pans and different spoons/spatulas/tongs, etc. If you only ever have a saucepan and a whisk, you're pretty limited. Kids' who just have 5 toys or less, no matter how creative, will be limited in how they can play, and for children their work is play. Legos and Barbies are great toys, and usually the more you have, the more you can expand your play. Both are open ended toys that require a lot of imagination to utilize, which are great for your daughter. Craft supplies are also excellent, she is learning and honing so many skills by creating arts and crafts. I know she loves an open space-- I do too. But she needs all her 'tools' in order to do her work (play.) Maybe the two of you can do some research on how professional woodworkers or seamstresses organize their work stations, and if she sees organizing her toys as a means to create her own workstation then it won't be so overwhelming.
I don’t know if you’ve seen this yet but National Geographic has a rock/stone Advent calendar. Your daughter may be too young for this yet - it has lots of experiments with it and some precious stones. I liked rocks when I was little too. This lasted through college..Hope everything is going well with the new baby!
I'm very fortunate that my 15 year old daughter has been decluttering her own room and her clothes by herself for the last couple of years! She's even better about decluttering than I am!😂
I hate "kids will be kids" hot mess house mentality. We don't do that with puppies. "Puppies will be puppies" and let them pee on the floor and chew up all the shoes. We have to train them. Hot mess house is lazy parenting.
So are naturally organized kids autistic or have OCD? I don't think you can make a blanket statement like kids aren't organized. Part of it is being positive, like being encouraging when they put dirty clothes, in the hamper. I have definitely felt kids were playing with all their toys, all the time.
Kids in preschool have routines and are responsible for putting their belongings in their cubbies when entering the classroom, cleaning up the toys after playing, and throwing away their garbage at snack/mealtimes. It's great when parents continue this at home.

My high school chorus teacher always used to say, "repetition is the mother of learning." Thank you for that reminder! ❤ Keep up the great work, Mom!
Repitio est mater studorium!
First thing I teach students of all ages. My motto for homework and class work.
I'm a choir teacher! Gonna start using that!
@HomesteadatHome One of her other favorite phrases was "common human decency." Unfortunately, that concept has been lost by most nowadays. 😕
I had a teacher say repetition is the mother of retention

I appreciate the reality of some get overwhelmed by clutter. A clean house doesn’t always means unhappy kids!
Involving the kiddos in change is great for their executive function learning.

I wouldn't mind a toy room but with 4 kids in a 3bdrm house there is no room for that or an office.
My son's toy room was his bedroom 😊 same as me when I grew up
Who has a spare room jist for toys if u kneed another room it means there is too many toys

Thanks.
My 23 and 25 years old still live at home. Absolutely wait until they move out to expect perfection 😂.
Great video!
I’m really interested in that storage bean bag chair. I can’t seem to find it on your amazon list. Would you be able to share the link?
Please can you tell us where you got that amazing pomegranate wallpaper behind the lockers?
Can I ask where you got the bed? And does it come in a king size?
There's a reason (one of many) why I don't have kids. This video is a clue.
Where are your half cube storage bins from?
Can you share links to your kids toys sometime?
EVEN WHEN NO KIDS CLUTTER( MAYBE NOT IN ABUNDANCE) LOOKS LIKE CLUTTER IS A REALITY AND WELL NEVER GET AWAY FROM IT
I do love these videos but this ones background music volume was a bit busy/loud. Love these tips though!
8:37. I love it. "You think I'm gonna throw that out...fat chance!"
❤❤❤
Good video, even for messy adults, but please, take a breath between sentences, I can hardly keep up😂
Yoto over tonies everyone, imo🎉 much easier to travel, more age range more educational content... But apparently not as good advertising😢
Hi how are tou did you have your little addition...
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Love this and all of your content :)
Be careful saying things like "I bribe my kids with snacks" ... if you know you know.
The music drives me crazy because it sounds chaotic
Did you say “pacifically” on purpose?
I hate "kids will be kids" hot mess house mentality. We don't do that with puppies. "Puppies will be puppies" and let them pee on the floor and chew up all the shoes. We have to train them. Hot mess house is lazy parenting.
Do you really have a vase, with water, on a wooden table...without a barrier! That's a major faux pas!
You shouldve mentioned in title it was about kids clutter. As a disablwd lady in mt 60's this was a waste of my time. No rud3 comments needed.
Rude. I'm in my 60s, snd still enjoyed seeing her and her kids. And the principles are still the same.
So are naturally organized kids autistic or have OCD? I don't think you can make a blanket statement like kids aren't organized. Part of it is being positive, like being encouraging when they put dirty clothes, in the hamper. I have definitely felt kids were playing with all their toys, all the time.
so happy I don't have kids. YUCK!.
I love your videos I think they’re amazing but you talk super fast, I think I get a bit stressed listening to your videos. I do love you though 🥰
Would adjusting the video speed help? I've found that it helps me sometimes, depending on the person I'm watching.
