I have downloaded the app. Thank you! I love listening to audiobooks that are Christian Fiction! I was just looking for some today!!
This is the first time I’ve seen you and I was in Google for something else when you popped up!
I had just been able to declutter a table by my sofa! I am so prepped of myself! I was going to take a photo but didn’t. In going to of my kitchen table! I have the rest of the stuff in a pile on the floor to deal with tomorrow and the rest of my bed, but I did start in my bed and got a pile all cleaned up by my cat tree in the bedroom! That’s an AWE MAZING Achievement for me, being a very difficult person to overcome overwhelmedness!!! I suffer from anxiety for mental health reasons. It makes it worse thinking of doing this! 🤗❤️🥰🙌🫅🕊️

❤ Dawn, I’ve watched every single one of your videos, and every one brings joy, inspiration, and FREEDOM! You got me through a terrible life transition of divorce, chronic illness, and job loss. When you say at the end of your videos, “I love you, I hope you have a really great day, and I’ll see you again soon,” I would burst into tears from your sincerity. That 1 thing helped me through BAD days. I love the freedom you give through getting rid of shame, toxicity, negative mindsets, and guilt. “I JUST DIDN’T KNOW” is another favorite mantra now. After all this time my home is a joyful, free, safe and beautiful sanctuary. Minimalism has made dealing with my illness easier, and Tuesdays with you are a God filled moment of hope ❤

This attitude is helping me so much get through my adult son’s death. If I look at it and smile, it can stay. If it hurts me, I either put it in a box way behind everything in the closet or I get rid of it. Right now my husband has a small bag of Jeff’s ashes in his sock drawer. I have made it my mission for those to move on.I’m sorry but my beloved son Jeff cannot stay rent-free in the house.

I grew up with the mindset that you go to garage sales and thrift stores to look for a good deal. Or to buy several of anything if it was on sale. These habits have filled my mom's home with junk she doesn't use. She frantically cleans for a week before any gathering she has. The last 2 years, I've actively tried to unwind these habits that I've inherited. Suddenly, with a decluttered home, I can have guests over any time, cleaning is not a burden, and it's easier than ever to have beneficial routines (like a nightly reset, daily laundry, etc). I had to let go of a lot of things that annoyed my mother in law (who sees value in EVERY item and has given me many things). But I'm glad to have a home I can manage now.

Before my husband and I moved, I finally decided to trash the photo albums, scrap books and childhood related things my mom had held on for me. I have four sons - I don’t think boys/men care about those things as much. They would appreciate photos of me with them and maybe a few pictures of me from my childhood. I held on to a few treasures but everything else went. I never looked at them, cared that I had those things or thought that my children would want figurines, my old drawings or anything else I had. I saved my children the time and effort later down the road when I pass away also. I didn’t have the fondest memories in childhood and letting those things go felt like a giant weight off my shoulders.

I’m 73! You youngsters have been so helpful to me as I prepare my home for the ease and safety I’ll need now and in the future. One day I decided to get rid of my glass top stove and my stainless steel refrigerator simply because they getting on my last nerve. I was VERY intentional about choosing what I would purchase. First the stove…I wanted white to brighten up my kitchen. Coil burners aren’t super attractive but it sure beats that burned on residue that plagued me. The stainless steel refrigerator had a broken handle that I could have fixed I guess. Spots and stains were all over it. I don’t like those doors for water and I don’t like ice maker ice either. My new refrigerator is bright white, no handles to fall off. No nooks and crannies to worry about. No ice maker and I’m in love with them both!

I feel the same about icemakers and water dispensers. I'd rather have more space for FOOD INSIDE than bad-tasting water and ice!
I have no fear of drinking tap water, or refrigerated tap water from a pitcher. Fewer parts to break, too ... Hooray!
I would've probably ordered a new handle and replaced it myself (or at least tried), because I can be stubborn like that.
(Or maybe that's false bravado, because I haven't fixed the loose gasket around the bottom of one door ... so who am I fooling? Shhhhh!) 😂

Dawn, I live in northern Illinois and am an aspiring minimalist. My former home was rather minimal and did not send me negative messages because everything was clean, organized, sparse, and in its place. No junk drawers. Not much on the walls. Not every inch of floor space inhabited by furniture. I call myself only an aspiring minimalist because I live with a wonderful British maximalist. In the five years we have known each other, my partner has reduced an incredible amount of clutter in his home. And since we married and I moved into my Jeremy’s house, we have continued to define our…TOGETHER lifestyle. Dawn, we are now moving to the UK back into Jeremy’s British house. All of this body doubling you and I have been doing together, all of this meaningful conversation in which we have engaged during these years have benefited both Jeremy and me greatly. We are moving from quite a large home into quite a small one…my absolute dream come true. And you know what? We’re ready. In part because I am an aspiring minimalist. In part because Jeremy has discovered the value and joy of maintaining less inventory. And in part because you are my friend and have encouraged me. Thank you. I will keep watching you in England when we move in January.

Dawn it's the first time I leave a comment here. I've been procrastinating my own decluttering journey for many many years. I didn't know where to begin let alone have the energy to start doing it. I don't know why but a couple of days ago your message stroke a chord in my mind and I just started decluttering a drawer. That lead me to throw old stuff out every day since. I'm being very consistent and I'm feeling better every day just by getting rid of old stuff. You are such a bright spot in my world. I really appreciate your encouragement and the support you provide.
I have been working on decluttering a little at a time since 2019. I found your channel around then. It’s been really nice to have the continued support in the process.
My husband has not yet come on board. He blames me for the clutter, but offers no support for doing anything with it, which ends up feeling very lonely at times. Much of the work is legitimately MY mess, but the resistance to fresh coats of paint or repairs that would support my journey are difficult to handle, as well as his inability to see the boxes or piles that are his to do.
I really enjoy your line of thinking regarding the stuff, how to process and let go, and just feeling like a loving friend as I do what I can do in my journey. It’s a life line I’ve really needed 😊

Now I try to remember to pray over our stuff being donated that God will use them to bless others. I like to image someone walking into the store needing something specific and seeing that need filled and feeling joy and thankfulness.

Wow! The expansion of rule 12 floored me! Carefully and completely writing down a negative memory strips it of its horror. I've been itching to write down the details of the story of my dad's death for 4 years. I finally did it on Monday and now I see your video. So interesting. I thought I wanted to do it simply as record keeping, but now I see there is emotional value!

When you said to write down a traumatic event I have to confess I've written so many comments that relate to my childhood trauma, then I proofread it, I tweak it -- if necessary, and then I delete it. Somehow seeing it written down even if no one but me reads it eases the burden.

I set a time limit for journaling about negative experiences, so I don't go down a rabbit hole by "awful-izing" scenarios and portraying myself as a victim ... when I've actually survived quite nicely.
Don't steep in the chaos of bad memories.
Write about it ONCE, then move on with your life.

I would so very gently suggest, starting with one thing, to write it on paper. Without proofreading and tweaking and polishing. You don’t have to make it eloquent, let it be messy and ugly. Write the pieces you’d never even imagine saying online. And then release it by tearing, burning, flushing, burying, sending it down a river… Sometimes by spending lots of time trying to tell the bad story in a pretty way, we let it take up a lot more room in our *present.* It may be worth a try to see if this way eases the burden a little more than the (also valid!!) way you’ve already discovered. ❤

Dawn, I recently was gifted used tupperware containers that stack. I utilized all of them and decanter all of my herbs and spices, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, flavored water packets and so much more. It cost me nothing, but the reward was powerful! I even labeled them with a sharpie. Lol. I used to have those small spice bottles. I discovered I needed bigger quantities. These containers freed up my canning jars. Win! Win! Made seeing my spices easier and storing them in the pantry a breeze. It also freed up a whole cabinet that is still empty today. 😅

Years ago my husband was deployed or training all the time. I had 3 kids under 6. I was miserable and could never keep the house clean no matter how hard i tried. I felt like a failure every day. I was overwhelmed everyday. I struggled so bad everyone commented on how much of a failure i was. I had an aunt that was an obvious hoarder. What i didnt realize was that my mom was just a more organized hoarder and i was right on her tail. My kids had a room so full of toys you couldn't walk. One day i was watching clean house, just dreaming of that and it clicked that we had too much stuff. Then i was introduced to fly lady? (I think) and learned about havits and organization. I started decluttering while my husband was deployed. Showed him the tv shows and he was all in. Life was 1000 times better. Then he got injured we went back to over buying and life was a mess. Then i found your channel and you put the why behind the need. So again i have decluttered. Im trying to teach my oldest so her life is easier. My second child got it though. She is an exptreme minimalist 🤣🤣

    • @karencox3235
      @karencox3235 2 місяці тому +1

I felt your story as I read it. My husband wasn't deployed, but for a couple years worked out of town Monday through Friday. I had 5 kids under 10 years old back then, and the house was ALWAYS a wreck! I tried and tried, but keeping the kids fed, schooled (we homeschooled) and semi-clean, not to mention caring for and loving them, was SO overwhelming that the housework (except for the kitchen and dishes - which USUALLY got done, and washing of clothes - but rarely put away properly) took a serious back seat. We had to step around clutter and boxes and bags (people would give me so much stuff because they thought we needed it and I didn't want to seem ungrateful) and all the baby item and all the toys and books and ... ugh! It's stressful now just thinking about it, even though we don't live like that any more. I've decluttered a LOT, but still have much to do. Yes! Teach the kids that they don't need so much stuff! My best to you!

Dawn, I love your videos. I am the exception to the rule in that I am single and find it easy to declutter. I recently declutterred my whole house which made me so happy. Your recent videos have convinced me that I am a minimalist in many areas of my home. I do have a lot of decor items but they are stored very nicely and neatly. I also have a huge paper crafting stash but again it is stored and organized in custom built cabinets. The joy of decluttering is the empty space that it yields. I just love to look at empty kitchen cabinets or closet shelves and feel the peace and quiet. One final thought, I also decanted my spices and love to look at the order and uniformity of the resulting space. Your comment about that being important to you in this season is so on point. I thought I had lost 2 collections of figurines until I found them after 18 years. I looked at them and didn’t feel joy so they went to the thrift store. Thanks Dawn for your inspiration and wisdom. It has made a difference in my life for sure!

Yes, yes to all of this. Just this week I spent 7 hours of my life looking for something I needed that I may or may not have accidentally decluttered in the past couple years. I'm not beating myself up. If anything this proves that I still need to reduce inventory more. It shouldn't take that long to search my home for anything. I'm more motivated than ever to keep going with the inventory reduction so that more time can be spent on things that matter.
