Pokemon has possibly had a worse jump to 3d than Sonic The Hedgehog lol, the difference between Unova and Kalos is night and day. It's annoying because the 2d games were probably way easier to work with the tight deadline let alone just looking more aesthetically pleasing and lively.

@user-fq6tz3yv9u sm/usum was unironically the peak of 3d pokemom even if it was still way behind the 2d. It actually had effort put into it even if it felt quite misguided at times, all the pokemon were actually bothered to be programmed into the game, it was a good foundation and swsh shit all over it.

@@alessandrolira4035 idk how sun and moon could be the peak of 3D Pokémon when the game before it had much more content. Yeah s/m had effort put into it and the switch Pokémon games don’t even come close to it, but I don’t believe it’s the peak of 3D Pokémon lol. Yea, it had all the Pokémon “programmed” into it, although they just reused the models and animations from the previous game (didn’t bother me too much but still). Using this logic X and Y would be seen as peak 3D pokemon as the devs had to create all the pokemon (and new ones) in 3D from scratch.

Another thing to consider is that those older games didn’t LOOK outdated when they came out, in fact, most pushed the boundaries of what was possible at the time and were beautiful to behold for the gamer.
The Pokémon games have never been accused of pushing the boundaries of game art design.

    • @TheAbsol7448

I wouldn't say Pokémon ever actually pushed boundaries. There are more visually impressive games on every single platform Pokémon ever came out on. The DS was actually where Pokémon started to fall behind on what was "visually impressive," even if the DS games looked great. (Dragon Quest 9.)

There's one thing I wish people would stop being so forgiving about, the whole idea that games *HAVE* to release because of "anime, merchandising, cards, etc need to line up!"
The Pokemon Company reports their financial earnings, and as a private company, they're under zero obligation to do so. Yet, they still come forward & break down how much money they make to let people know how strong the brand is.
You know what they specifically say in those reports? Merchandising/licensing doesn't make up a "significant" enough portion of revenue to report, then follow it up by saying "all earnings are from *GAMES ONLY!"
So every fiscal report they release only covers the video game sales... and because they don't have to report ANYTHING, it's pretty telling to me what makes up the most significant portion of their income, otherwise they'd lump it all together & say "we made this even LARGER amount of money this year!" That'd be easy & make their numbers even bigger right? Yet they don't...
Even if the licensing & merch makes a good chunk of change, it's not worth hampering your primary driver of revenue to accommodate the side things! It'd be like if a Pizza chain who makes 90% of its revenue from pizza swapped out to its dough just to make its bread sticks taste better, even though it makes the pizza taste like ass. Why do that?
The games make billions on their own, selling more than most AAA games & all being sold for full price! Even the most high budget AAA games go on sale quite often, but not Pokemon! It's almost always a full $60 for all 15-25 million copies sold. And since they're not investing as much into development as other AAA games get, the return on investment is even greater!
So how in the hell can we excuse billion dollar-earning games looking/running like garbage, just because new million dollar licensing products need to come out at the same time? It's nonsensical!
Sorry for the rant, it just really bugs me when we all know how much JUST THE GAMES make!

People who give the graphics a pass in favour of gameplay need to understand that Pokemon's gameplay isn't anywhere close to a point where it's refined enough to justify diverting resources. The battles in Scarlet and Violet are SO SLOW it's absurd. It's 2022 and the ampersand (&) is still an innovation that Game Freak has yet to master, because instead of just saying
"Pawmi was poisoned and took damage"
    It's
    "Pawmi was hit by poison tail" 1, 2, 3, 4, "It's not very effective" 1, 2, 3, 4, "Pawmi was poisoned" 1, 2, 3, 4, "Pawmi was hurt by the poison" 1, 2, 3, 4.
Which REALLY adds up across hundreds of battles, especially when you start adding in the same nonsense with stat changes, switches, abilities, and on and on and on.

Thing is with most mods even with decades of work and dedication they never and should never be able to surpass a brand new entry to the series that was being modded.
Ex: Warband had many great mods and a strong modding community but when Bannerlord came out none of those mods are as good as the new game.
This especially shouldn't be the case when its a mod for a completely different game.
Official titles should always completely surpass any fanwork and if it doesn't then there is something seriously wrong or the mod team is absolutely exceptional.
Unironically if Pokemon made a LeafGreen clone with new graphics, new region and new pokes it would obliterate most if not all fan games and without going over the development time of Violet/Scarlet.
3D is harder and takes longer and is buggier. Their small team and short timescale are suited to the old sprites-based Pokemon games.
If they want to keep doing 3d then they either need way way more people or they need more time with still a lot more people.

Lockdown started roughly two years ago, so roughly 67% of the production time was affected in some way. SV was also by FAR the most ambitious title they've done with several new mechanics. Yes, you can spend more money, but keep in mind that it's difficult to bring in new people and expect them to be fully competent and gelled in with the rest of the team immediately, particularly when in person meetings are infrequent at best. If GF didn't care about the series, they wouldn't have attempted to make a fully open world title with branching missions, something that had never been done before in the franchise. Now if the NEXT generation of games comes out and there's been no progress on game performance/visuals, then I'd be more inclined to say GF or Nintendo itself is the issue.

At least I don't remember any of it in games like Mario 64 or even Oblivion. The fact that it's in Scarlet and Violet is not what was intended, therfore it looks bad and lessens the experience. All and all it should not have been allowed to release, schedules be damned. They have enough money to take a hit and work to deliver a quality product. Sword and Shield didn't look good either, and this looks worse. I wouldn't count on things to get better. I'd say, as someone with a small amount of game development experience, it's actually poor optimization and resource management on GF's part. Less inexperience or laziness, or time restraints, and more likely that they just do not know how to manage resources of large on going projects very well. To prove my point, I'd like to point out that each successive generation adds and then drops features from the previous game. However with each new game that follows, they also retain the code of the previous pokemon and evolution mechanic, since that needs to be there. As well as any items a player could hold and sell for said mechanic. For example, the Elemental Stone evolutions, we got uses for them in Gen 1, then nothing really until Gen 5. That's a long time to keep carrying over that data while doing nothing with it. There's also the special balls used to catch pokemon in previous games, hold items like Arceus' plates, and a lot of other features such as moves existing on a specific pokemon. All this to say, Gamefreak does not plan ahead very well, or they'd plot out the next generations features to be future proofed into other games rather than the current method, which has been 'we're not doing a full national dex any more' and previous features may or may not reappear.

Xenoblade takes advantage of upscaling AI to get a performance boost (game actually runs at lower res but is upscaled up). They told me how much more immersive and fun and detailed the older games are and were disappointed when they had to go home because they don't have a 3DS and Platinum version and Heart Gold Soul Silver and Emerald are really hard to find right now unless you want to shell out around 150 bucks for each game and having to hunt down a working 3DS.

If it had real pokemon battles I would have played the shit out of it and gotten a lot of exercise, but it didn't so I didn't, to the detriment of my waistline.

I have to wonder if this is an intentional sacrifice by Nintendo. They haven't had many releases from their most popular franchises over the last couple years and the next one is still more than half a year out. Maybe they figured Pokemon fans are used to mediocre games and fans will probably buy it anyways. So if they're going to rush something out the door before it's ready, might as well be a Pokemon game.
That's the only way I can see this happening. Nintendo has many faults, but their games are at least consistently solid on a technical level. And yeah, I know it's technically Game Freak who developed these games. But Nintendo has a lot of fingers in the poke-pie and as publisher and co-owner of the IP they must have known how broken these games were before release.

They contract out for the card game. They contract out for the anime. They contract out for the merch. And so on.
The Pokémon Company's entire job it to manage the brand and make sure everything is released at the same time. They would have to renegotiate so many contracts and affect so many people's jobs that even a minor delay would be a nightmare. Everyone keeps bitching about it being the highest grossing media franchise but the games are probably a tiny, tiny slice of that. A nice plush can cost as much or more and have way, way less development cost. They are the highest grossing franchise because they stick to the schedules and, unfortunately, prioritize the mist profitable aspects. As someone who mostly shows up fur the games, I don't like it, but I understand that's how it is. Should/ could they develop things with more leeway? Probobally, and boy do I wish they would, but that would probably cost way more in terms of money and strain on business relationships than people are willing to admit.
I wish there was a game like Pokémon that pushed gameplay experience first, and smaller gameplay teams have tried to fill some of the individual niches that Pokémon games hit. Temtem, coromon, monster sanctuary, abomi Nation, and bravery network online all barely capture different parts of the Pokémon experience. It turns out it's real hard to do all that Pokémon does, or even just so **some** of it well. I don't say this all as apologia for a huge corporate hydra, but man there must be a lot of individuals in there, especially in the game development teams, trying their best and being way more disappointed in the results forced out of them by the corporate juggernaut than any whining online fan.

Hire 2x or 3x more people there, and all the Pokémon games issues could be solved and improved while obeying the schedule. More artists to draw all the Pokémon instead of cutting the Dex, more people to code, etc. Maybe even to release more games, like a new Pokémon Mistery Dungeon. I will say ever since SwSh discussion around pokemon game development has been tainted. I really appreciate your video existing since I feel a ton of people just see "Highest Grossing Media" franchise stuff, see the big number, and then assume its just laziness. One thing I will debate you on is I don't believe it would be impossible for a Pokemon game to be delayed a great example of this is during Pokemania they delayed Gen 2, and as a result the anime did the Orange Islands arc. Considering that I'd say if they ever needed to delay a game they could push back merch or figure something out for the anime, and even then the anime as of late is less focused on a specific region and more general meaning it's not super reliant on the games to push into new stuff. Outside of that I wholeheartedly agree Time is the biggest issue, in fact it's always been a massive issue for Pokemon (thanks to gigaleaks of gen 3 and 4 prototypes we can see even the older games faced tons of crunch and minor delays) it's an issue I feel they were able to balance in the 2D era, but I'm betting we're nearing the point where the straw will break the camels back. Crunch Culture isn't idolized, likely the dev team was struggling hard with time limits, Masuda (who in articles mentioned he works better in stress) is officially gone from Pokemon development, unless the newer heads share the same philosophy which could happen I could see a shift in the Pokemon release cycle coming eventually. I wanna say soon, but honestly I doubt it'll happen this gen.

They then stopped doing that for the rest of the world. It feels like they are absolutely out of their depth with the 3D environments here and probably at this point, out of ideas. How often can you tell the same story and then sell two versions of that? Let's also take into account another thing: style vs graphics. If a game *looks nice* even old then even on outdated looking meshes a texture update and a lighting update can speak volumes if there's style backing it up. Best example would be Morrowind. It's old, draw distance is ass and the animations make Aqua Teen Hunger Force look like Akira by comparison. Saying that though if you go out, upscale the textures and increase the draw distance and 9/10 times that game still looks *nice* which is Pokemon's problem. Most of it looks too generic or budget PS2 grade which conflicts as is said alright with some high quality nice looking models.

There was Arceus which released in 2022. That’s effectively three ambitious open world games in one year.
And then before the pandemic, for the majority of the last decade, Game Freak were releasing games on an annual basis. In 2019 they released Giga Wrecker Alt, Little Town Hero *and* Pokémon Sword and Shield. Four games! And only a year after Pokémon Quest and the two ‘Let’s Go!’ games.

They know consoomers will eat up whatever schlock is placed in front of them, so why take the time to polish their games when they can just release a new, half-baked one each year.
This is a trend that has been going on since the first switch Pokémon game, Let’s GO pikachu and eevee. Just look at the release schedule since then and compare it to any time before. But... Doesn't Call of Duty release a new game every year? Didn't Activision figure this out years ago? You just have multiple studios working on individual games, each game having two to three years of development time. I'm so tired of complaints about Pokemon not having enough staff. JUST HIRE MORE STAFF. CREATE MORE STUDIOS. THEY HAVE THE MONEY.

They really should just take 5-6 years, redo the visuals, do the code well, and then release a good game
