Funny thing is that the "horizontal Wii" is still backwards compatible, it just doesn´t have the hardware. The connections for the controller ports are on the board, but the connectors itself weren´t soldered in. If you solder them to the board and put in older DVD drive that can lead in GC discs, you are in the game :D
IIRC, the RVL-101 variants lacked the ports themselves while the boards were identical between RVL-001 and RVL-101, meaning modifying a 101 to be GC compatible required donor parts; and later versions lacked SMD components as well, mostly resistors.
Yeah, with the PS3 the PS2 games ran separately on its own CPU/GPU. So in their case they could actually just cut those from the system and save a lot in production. Nintendo can't really do that with the Wii cus spoilers, the GC CPU and Wii CPU are basically the same. Same with the DSi. The GBA hardware is already integrated on the DS as a co-processor that's regularly used in many of its games. Which makes it necessary to keep even on the DSi/3DS.

The Wii-Mini was likely an idea conceptualised to use up leftover parts. Because the WiiU was out and the Wii did so well, they would've had so many components leftover that they could still repurpose for something other than repairs. In theory this makes sense because it would only need to do basic functions and would be very low cost to manufacture and sell.

I wonder if future consoles will follow the PS5's design ideology. There's only one retail basis of the console, excluding the disc and digital variants as I'm only talking about colors, and that's white, with any color 'variation' being achieved via an official accessory, the covers. This more or less removes any limitations to availability, as all available cover colors are widely available, and are not dependent on the console purchase itself. Though, I'll be curious what Sony does when it comes time for the typical 'limited edition' consoles, if the covers will be hyper-limited to just those consoles, or if there'll be an official accessory release, or if Sony will do something absolutely whacky like bundle the covers with the game as an optional bundle. I'll also be curious how this affects the resale market, both personal sales (like eBay) and business sales (like GameStop), as a sale could include original white panels, non-original colored panels, whatever Sony does with limited edition panels, third party panels, or a any combination of these; I wouldn't assume prices would change too much from comparison of the items being sold separately, but strange things have happened before. Plus these panels are extremely good for accessing the internals, any fasteners can be hidden under the panels, it's honestly such a clean setup, and virtually, if not literally, any console design could be adapted to use this design ideology. I would also think this keeps costs down by some amount, as you're only shipping one variant of a large-package console, yet the higher variety of colors are available via small-package accessories, thus warehousing and logistics costs are cut fairly significantly when it comes to potential 'variants' of the console. It's a win-win for everyone, and potentially an even larger win for consumers depending on how 'limited edition' variants are handled. It's similar to the third party decal kits back in the XB360 days, when the XB360 variants were glorified pre-applied decals.
