I’ve been at the same retail job since 2011 and I’m wanting to put myself in a position where I can solely maintain my family. I’m 31 now and I’m scared to begin something new but I know I gotta do it.

Dude you are still young. I am 37 and I am doing the apprenticeship program. I know a guy that started the electrical apprenticeship program in 2018 and he's in his 50s. It's never too late!
Another thing to note here is that while electricians and plumbers are usually at the top of the chain in the trades, people that work with hvac(sheet metal, refrigerants, hvac controls, etc)are right up there in some areas. Trades are a great option for young people these days and it gives more guarantees than other jobs, especially if you go the union route
I'm a 44 year old electrician in Australia, I started my apprenticeship in my mid 20 and I thought I was old then! getting my qualification was the best thing I ever did, and it set me up for the rest of my working life, I would do it again at 44 if I needed to, 4 years fly's by these days :( and being a electrician opens up so many other jobs that you wouldn't think of. I've spent most of my career as a mechanical electrician, in short I install machines in factory's and work on elevators, but being able to legal work on electrical equipment makes your future possibility's endless. the last job man will have is repairing the machines lol. don't tell musk I said this lol
Hey man, I’m a high school junior and this video is really making me consider becoming an electrician. I was thinking about majoring in computer science in college, but all the programmers I know seem depressed from staring at a screen 40-60 hours a week. I’m looking to work with my hands and get satisfaction out of my work, and being an electrician seems like it could fit the bill. Thanks for the information man. Btw I live in Portland too!

I'm a Local 3 Foreman in NYC and the Union has been very, very good to me. You seem like a very smart guy and an asset to your local. Great channel brother.
Hey Jose! Thanks for the encouraging comment! Ever since I started my apprenticeship I’ve just felt so fortunate and have wanted to somehow repay the IBEW for the incredible opportunity given to me. I feel like this channel is a good way for me to do that by letting others know about it. ⚡️
These were 20 great reasons to love being an electrician. Thanks for sharing your point of view. This will help many people take action and begin their journey to becoming an electrician. Keep it up!
Im 28 and i just applied for the Electrician education in denmark. Im nervous but i look forward to it, i really like your videos which explains why and why not this is the best job in the world :D !
I finally got my letter in the mail I’m taking my aptitude test in 2 weeks! I’m so excited but also super nervous but I feel good and hope I pass! I’m super ready and excited to become an electrician your videos really motivated me to become an electrician to have a great future for myself and my family
Hey, right on! Really glad to hear that the process is moving along for you! Just make sure to spend this time studying and preparing and you’ll do great. I’m happy to hear that you’re enjoying the videos! This is truly a fantastic career for someone who is providing for a family. Wishing you the best of luck!
Wow, congratulations! I'm so happy to hear that! It's my absolute pleasure. Hearing things like this makes all of the time spent on the channel worth it.
I’m 32 and I’ve been cooking for the last five years, I’m ready for a change. I’m completing my associates in science this year and for some reason I’m fascinated with math, chemistry and problem solving but need to start something soon! I think manipulating electricity sounds freaking awesome. I’m going to be filling out my apprenticeship application tonight!
I just started my career as an aircraft maintenance technician for a major airline. Right now is a great time to get into the industry. A lot of the same reasons he mentions in this video is why I love my job. Plus flight benefits to see the world. I had to study good amount of electricity and it’s very interesting stuff. We learn a lot of different disciplines such as hydraulics, welding, woodwork, composites, engines etc. it never gets boring. My next choice would be to be an electrician but it’s only because it can be kinda scary dealing with that high voltage. Blue collar work is great.
I’m waiting to enroll into the a&p program at my community college for the fall semester. Very excited to be going this route, but I am also really interested in being an electrician. Maybe I’ll have an opportunity to be an electrician down the road!
@@Drum93bum yeah I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to do that on the side. Maybe you can be an avionics guy to gain the skills needed. They basically work on all things electronic on the airplane. Lot more troubleshooting.

I’m 20 and I’ve been doing carpentry and I’m now deciding I really would like to join the electrical union, I live in Idaho so I just turned in my application in Spokane and hopefully I’ll get a call soon for my tests. I’ve been studying on Khan academy like crazy and taking all of your advice that I can, thanks again!
Hey Tony! Thanks for subscribing! I’m really glad to hear that you’re enjoying the videos and finding them helpful! It’s pretty cool when being in the IBEW/ union runs in the family. My dad and grandpa were both in Local 280, the plumbers union. My brother and I were the rebels who decided to take on electrical instead of plumbing. Being a union member is definitely something to be proud of. I think that that’s a really smart move. Carpentry is great to know but I think that electrical work/ joining the IBEW is a great decision. I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming aptitude test, whenever it gets scheduled! Feel free to stay in touch and ask me anything else along the way. ⚡️
That's so great to hear! You definitely should! I'm actually going to be filming a video with a female journeyman electrician on my channel very soon. Do you have any specific questions that you'd like me to ask her? Thanks for watching!
I don't know if you already made the video with the woman who is a journeyman, BUT I started school in January and should be finding my apprenticeship very soon. I would like to know what challenges she's faced as a woman in the field if any! Also, what work boots are best. Slim pickings for woman out here! Thank you so much. :)
I've been an electrician (loose title) for electric bikes for 6 years. Rebuilding controllers, motors, programming, diagnostics, etc. My company just went under and life is telling me to become an appreciate electrician. These videos helped me with that, and I'm currently searching for companies hiring!
I went thru a 7 month electrical trade school and had to pay student loans :/… wish I would’ve known to just join an IBEW apprenticeship back then… but now I’m studying to pass my journeyman exam, I enjoy your positive videos. Some days are better than others , it can be hard work but all in all I do like being an electrician. Considering joining the union now after watching these . Thanks for the videos
Hi Steven, I'm 18 rn and I'm seriously considering going to a trade school since my parents are willing to pay for my education. Would you be willing to tell me if trade school was worth it in your eyes? I'd love any and all information you're willing to give me bro
@@splotchycrib997 it’s a great trade to get into … trade school was great because I learned a lot and they placed me onto a job when it was done … only other thing better than trade school would be an apprenticeship which instead of paying for school they pay you while you learn under a journeyman … that would be my only complaint with trade school but apprenticeships might be tough to get into or so I’ve heard . I can’t complain about trade school tho , as it’s given me my start in my career and now I’m on the books in the union as a journeyman. It’s a great career. Hope that helps
I’ve been doing it for 2 weeks. The only thing that sucks about it is the commute which is 45 mins for me. Hopefully when we finish this job tho the drive will be shorter
my dad is an eletrcian and when i was younger he would always bring me to work and i would always watch him pull out his equipment and wire stuff and it would always satisfy me. my family also has our own eletrcian company my grandpa is the boss
Edit: Electricians make fantastic money after apprenticeship. Well, after second year. I’m not Union, never wanted to be, don’t plan on ever being Union, so maybe our wages are different in my area due to that as well as geography. Most first years will start at 14/hr or somewhere around there depending on experience in other trades or in other careers. However, once you finish second year, you can really start making good money. I made 21/hr in the end of my second year, in part because of my extended experience that goes a couple years back before I went to school. But also because I show up on time, work hard, I’m a nice guy to work with, and I’m always wanting to learn something new. In my opinion, the hardest part about getting into this career, for me, was getting past the low wages early on. You do a lot of really hard physical work for what feels like pennies an hour. But, trust me, once you get past your first couple years, you will start to take off. You’ll be able to go do work on your own at a job site, and explain to others how you want to do something, instead them telling you what to do. And I think one of my favorite parts about being an electrician, is getting to teach my craft to new people on the job. I love it. I currently work with an older guy than me (he’s my elder by about 20 years) and hasn’t done hardly any electrical work before this job, and I look forward to teaching him something new every day. Something about seeing the person you’re teaching suddenly “click” with a concept and start to understand a difficult concept, is awesome. In fact I like teaching it one on one so much I’ve caught myself teaching my 10 year old nephew on side jobs, concepts that he’s years away from even being able to comprehend, and my wife sometimes has to tell me to shut up because I will just go on and on to her about all this stuff she knows nothing about😂
Gotcha. It will be here before you know it. It’s unfortunate that this whole pandemic has slowed down the application process for some locals but it’s good that they’re still taking people in.
@@MadElectrician Yes sir. I am using this time as an opportunity to really learn math/reading comp. Been using Khan academy every morning which has been fantastic!
I’m a union carpenter apprentice and the problem is I’m never given enough time to think about a different way or solve the problem because it’s just go go go and you have to just do it the way your told to make money as fast as you can and you don’t learn any other way or express a way that might also work. It’s like you’re stuck to one thing
I've been in situations like that before as an electrician too. Generally, there is a lot more problem solving with us though so it's not quite as go go go.
Oh man, I completely understand how you’re feeling right now.. I actually have a whole video where I talk about it. If you’re anything like me then you will probably appreciate this job more than most people having come from such a stressful and hectic customer service heavy job like AT&T. Being able to make killer money without needing to rely on commission from selling people things that they realistically don’t need is a really great feeling. I wish I could take you out for a beer or something. 😂🍻
Right on Nathan! Is that when your bootcamp starts? I'm sure we'll run into each other at the training center because I have school during summer term. ⚡️
I know you mentioned you can't talk about some specifics, but I'm curious to hear about availability of work in renewable energy in your experience with 48. With the national shift in politics and the potential rollout of 'the green new deal' there will/would be a drastic increase in demand for electricians performing work in this sector. I think for this plan to succeed, a drastic increase in quantity of quality training programs for electricians will be necessary. Personally, I'm hoping for both of these to occur as I think it's one of the most meaningful types of work an electrician (or person in general) can perform.
Good content. Thanks for making these videos. If I may make a suggestion, use a lavalier mic for louder audio (so it's easier to hear). Or turn up the audio volume after recording before you upload the vid.
Studied engineering for like 5 years it was the worst decision of my life. I fucking hated doing all the math and working in a cubicle. Thank you for this video, being an electrician seems like a good path for me.

So have you ever seen an overweight guy become an electrician? I’m really overweight, trying to lose weight, and just applied to the closest trade school. Your videos have convinced me that this is what I want to do.
My brother Aaron said it! Things are still thriving here even in the midst of the pandemic. Electrical work is pretty resilient to stuff like this and definitely won’t be going anywhere. Things occasionally slow down but always pick back up. Things will always need to be fixed, updated, installed, and built, and it takes electricians to make that happen. I would even say that electrical work is pretty well insulated from the threat of AI potentially taking over some people’s jobs. It’s a future-proof career in my opinion.
I’m in michigan one of the worst places hit and most almost all companies were out of work for about 8 weeks when it hit and back to business as usual since then.
What is the vacation situation and culture for electricians. I don't want to get into a field with a vacation starts on your 65th birthday kind of culture.
Hey Carter! Thanks for reaching out! Every local union is different, but here we have what's called a "vacation fund." Originally when it was given to us we got a 4% raise. That raise was allocated into our vacation fund and was intended to be used for taking time off. The nice thing though is that it can be used for anything. Technically that money comes out of our wages, but it originally came with a 4% raise. Hopefully that makes sense. I'll probably make a whole video explaining it some day. I personally love it because I can use it for taking vacations or anything else that I need. I've also never had any trouble taking time off and have been encouraged to take trips/ time off when important and make sure to make time for my family. An example was when my wife and I had our second daughter; I was encouraged to take two weeks off of work to spend time with my family and be there with my daughter for the first two weeks of her life. It was really nice. Of course, that will all depend on the company that you end up working for and also the job site that you are working on. From what I've seen though, generally people are really cool about taking time off. Hope that helps answer your question!
Good luck to anyone wanting to get into the Union without knowing anyone or getting a 100% on the aptitude test. Local 98 (Philadelphia) is around my jurisdiction and they’re an incredible SOB to get into without connections. Great vid nonetheless!
Passed my test and now I’m in the interviewing process. When I originally applied I wasn’t working but now that I got a spot for when classes start. Would I and should I quit my job when the apprenticeship starts ?
Hi Steve. Thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos and for being so thorough in your discussion topics. I'm 44 and have had desk jobs my entire working life. I'm in good physical shape and don't have any health issues yet but I'm wondering if I'm too old to embark on this career. Are the rigors of the job too hard for someone my age or will I have to call it quits due to wear and tear within 5-10 years? Any insight is much appreciated.
My grandfather is our local reserve electrician (64 years as of today.) hes in excellent shape, doesnt plan on retirement (as far as i know lol.) he loves his work (given that he chose it from the get-go of his late teens/early adult hood.) hes pretty happy over-all. from my perspective, hes got about a good 15years of solid work within him at his rate of work. (hes a business owner with his own shop.) (tbh not my first chosen field but here i am looking at electrical youtube content due to his influence lmao :)
I've been looking into both plumbing and electrical union trades. Ive been in retail for a while now and the 27.5% of journeyman trade in my area scares me a bit. $11.96hr for first year electrical apprenticeship seems kind of low. But on the other hand I don't know the percentage of pay increase every 1000 hours and the end results will definitely blow my GM gig out of the water.
It's an awesome trade for sure. And it can definitely be a struggle taking a pay cut when you first get in. I would recommend looking at the website for the local that you are interested in applying for (or the company) and find out exactly what apprentices make. I know here we get raises based on our on the job hours. I've found that googling the wages always shows a much lower wage than what people truly make in this trade.
look for an IEC near you. you can go open shop as an apprentice and make more and then go union later for the better pay once your a journeyman. union apprentice pay isn't anywhere near market average. its well below.
hi so i’m 18 and a female i’m starting the trade school this year, i’m kinda scared 😣 well the main thing i’m scared about is the heavy lifting, i get chest and back inflammation but only when i’m not in the heat of the activity that causes it. like i could be exercising and i wouldn’t feel any pain until i relax. also very scared of ladders… those are my only concerns besides going into a male dominated job as a female edit: also i’m really glad i found your channel, i’m currently taking notes on this stuff. i already applied and got accepted without any test, or i’m not really sure how it works it might just be my state. edit again: i’m mid way through the video and i just love the way you described this and hoping that it’ll be as good an experience as you say ☺️
@@shanaya2371 yes! I’m still doing it, apparently there’s not too much heavy lifting besides your tool box, i haven’t done too many physical things yet but i did hook up a circuit for a load (a lightbulb) and screwing the wires, doing continuity tests, etc. I 100 percent recommend! Where i am, there’s a free program for it to get entry level apprenticeship after taking and passing the class so that’s what i’m doing. They have a whole bunch of other classes and as long as you’re under 21 you can still apply for semesters. Not sure if you’re in my same country/state, but if you have more questions i’ll try to answer them to my best ability based on what i know
This channel is fantastic! You have my sub! I want to ask though, is there a system in place to move your license from state to state (i.e. journeyman from utah to Kansas) or is it a national license?

Do you have to Stand most of the time on the job? And how is your back at the end of each day? I've heard that being an Electrician is a physically strenuous job, so I'm currently pursuing a job as an Actuary.
Hey Elliott! Check out my last video “Three Things I Don’t Like About Being an Electrician.” I actually go in debt into answering that question. The short answer though is that yes, it can be physically demanding/ strenuous, though when compared to other trades like roofing, flooring, etc, it’s not near as hard on your body. Most days it’s not an issue at all, but there are definitely days/ tasks where this can be physically strenuous and I’ll feel it.
@@MadElectrician About that, if I just start working out and become physically fit by the time I start, it won't become a problem then and as I get older right?
@@adalgissarodriguez461 you’ll be good man. Just do it. Eat right, stretch, drink heaps of water, don’t drink booze or smoke and you’ll be great. If u mess those things up, your body will suck no matter what you do for work
I think you will be okay. It all really just depends on how well you take care of yourself. For example, I almost never kneel without a knee pad if I know I’m going to be working low for a bit of time because I want to keep my knees good. I also always try to work in a way that is ergonomically good for my body. I don’t push myself harder than I physically need to. I always grab a cart or ask for a hand when lifting/ transporting something heavy. It is really how well you take care of yourself over time. All of that being said, I’m still a very efficient, fast, and productive worker. Hope that helps!

I don't know what it's like in the US, but in Australia, getting a union trades job, much less an apprenticeship is very difficult. They're never advertised and the people who get them have connections.
I'm wanting to become an electrician but I have no idea how I can afford the time it takes for training and apprenticeship. I'm currently a stay-at-home mom and worked in HR before this. But HR jobs want to pay max around 65,000 and they want you to have a bachelor's as well as years of experience. I've got two babies under age 3 so I'm not sure how I could work a job as well as go to school.

Been working in a union for 33 years , luckily been employed about 90 percent of that time, I became an electrician because I wanted to . A lot of people look at just money benefits etc and have no work ethic, one thing I always tell this younger generation it’s going to slow down eventually and most people haven’t seen tough times even 2008 wasn’t that bad. So u have to have passion for what u do if it’s just a paycheck you will ride the bench when it slows down.good luck younger generation .
Hey man I live in corvallis! Im currently going to school for computer science and MAN this aint it. Im set to graduate in 22 but I want out! COVID has really hurt apprenticeships, who do I talk/where do I go to get started in a apprenticeship? I have a bullet proof job history and I will do anything to get my foot in the door. Any advice?
What do you think is a good way to get experience? I interviewed for a union apprenticeship 8 months ago but i believe my lack of experience was the reason i didn't get in. And most non-union electrical jobs i see require 2-3 years of experience so i am in a tough spot
The best way would probably be to go the material handler route. Not only will you gain a lot of on the job experience, but it will also really help you get your foot in the door. I actually have a full video talking about it. Check it out if you haven't yet!
Hi what got you into being an electrician? Also is there ways to prevent hurting yourself from explosions or shock or a live line. Like taking precautions and making sure everything is fine. I really want to get into this trade.
Hey, happy! It really came down to talking to my brother in law who is an electrician in the Seattle Washington area. He always talked about how much he loved his job and I just couldn't believe how much he was making. Once I finally realized that I didn't want to be in retail anymore, I really started thinking about pursuing the electrical field as an electrician. The more research I did the more I realized that it was something that really interested me and that I could really see myself doing. To this day, I'm so thankful that I made the decision to get in. The money is great, but like I mentioned in the video, that's just one of the many things that I love about this career. There are definitely ways to mitigate the risks associated with electrical work. I think that first, having an understanding of electricity, how it works and behaves, really helps you to know what you should and shouldn't do. The more you know and the more experience you have with it, the more comfortable you feel working with it. I don't do anything that I know is unsafe, and I wouldn't be in this trade if I really thought that I would someday be seriously hurt. I know the risks, but I also understand how to mitigate them. Hopefully that helps answer your question a little bit. I can tell you from experience that while it can be scary at first, you will learn to understand it and know how to work with it safely. Thanks for watching! ⚡️

Hey, I am thinking of being an electrician, but I also want to be an electrical engineer. I know I could do both, but do you have any advice on what option I should choose
I'll have been in retail for 9 years this November and now I feel it's time to look elsewhere, I feel my work ethic and hard work isn't being valued I worked hard to achieve. I'll be 34 and want a better job. Money is secondary to me compared to being valued by a company and co-workers. Life has been rough for the past few years and I want to be successful in life.
Are you an ISTP ?... I am, and you do seem similar in a way. I like challenges but at the same time I want to have confidence in my skills and be able to rely on them to always solve it. Are you ever anxious about any projects thinking you won't be able to get it done ?
Hello, sorry for my username lol. I have a question, if I wanted to become an electrician would any college courses help my chances of getting into an apprenticeship? I live in California and I want to become an electrician but I have no experience or knowledge so the chances of me getting into an apprenticeship might be low, I also need to wait for 2 years since I'm still 17 and raising the money might take a bit so Ima get a part time job. The reason I wanna go to college is because I can apply for aid and I don't want to waste the 2 years doing nothing. Sorry if this is confusing but the question is, if I were to pick a college major, which one would help my chances of getting into an apprenticeship school?

@@splotchycrib997 it’s a great trade to get into … trade school was great because I learned a lot and they placed me onto a job when it was done … only other thing better than trade school would be an apprenticeship which instead of paying for school they pay you while you learn under a journeyman … that would be my only complaint with trade school but apprenticeships might be tough to get into or so I’ve heard . my dad is an eletrcian and when i was younger he would always bring me to work and i would always watch him pull out his equipment and wire stuff and it would always satisfy me. my family also has our own eletrcian company my grandpa is the boss
In fact I like teaching it one on one so much I’ve caught myself teaching my 10 year old nephew on side jobs, concepts that he’s years away from even being able to comprehend, and my wife sometimes has to tell me to shut up because I will just go on and on to her about all this stuff she knows nothing about😂
Very cool, I’m in Portland area too. Honestly totally lost in what career I want to get into and I would love this but it seems kinda hard to start

It’s like you’re stuck to one thing
I've been in situations like that before as an electrician too. Generally, there is a lot more problem solving with us though so it's not quite as go go go.

Is covid killing the electrician job? I want to pursue in this but unsure about this future in this job due to limitation and covid
I’m a local 48 hand in Portland and I haven’t lost any work due to covid. Our local has over 100 calls on the books.
IEC is also a great resource.
What is the vacation situation and culture for electricians. I don't want to get into a field with a vacation starts on your 65th birthday kind of culture.
Hey Carter!
Thanks for reaching out!
Every local union is different, but here we have what's called a "vacation fund."
Originally when it was given to us we got a 4% raise.

Hi Steve. Thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos and for being so thorough in your discussion topics. I'm 44 and have had desk jobs my entire working life. I'm in good physical shape and don't have any health issues yet but I'm wondering if I'm too old to embark on this career.
I’ve been doing TI work the past 3 months. 🙃
I've found that googling the wages always shows a much lower wage than what people truly make in this trade.
when you first become an electrician get a job at one of the best firms then build your image for a few years and become self-employed
look for an IEC near you. you can go open shop as an apprentice and make more and then go union later for the better pay once your a journeyman. union apprentice pay isn't anywhere near market average. its well below.

Do you have to Stand most of the time on the job? And how is your back at the end of each day?
I've heard that being an Electrician is a physically strenuous job, so I'm currently pursuing a job as an Actuary.
Hey Elliott! Check out my last video “Three Things I Don’t Like About Being an Electrician.”
I actually go in debt into answering that question.

I'm wanting to become an electrician but I have no idea how I can afford the time it takes for training and apprenticeship. I'm currently a stay-at-home mom and worked in HR before this.
Sounds good to me ✅
I have 2 DUIs on my record, most recent one was 5 years ago, how much will that hurt my odds when applying for an IBEW apprenticeship?
whats an ibew? is that what you're saying? also I don't know anything about the trade schools near me but there's a community college that has a "journeyman and master electrition" program I was thinking of taking, do you think that would be a good choice for mey electrical career? also thank you for your videos this is exactly what I was looking for when I searched "day in the life of an electrition." lol
I'm going to IBEW today to ask questions but like I just have a quick question. I broke my wrist. Can I still be an electrician if I don't have full use of my hand?
Hi, I live in st catharines ontario and very interested in becoming an electrician. Do you have any advice on what I need to do to get started? thank you!
I recently lost my job and can’t find a good job I finished high school and didn’t no what to get into will I be to late if I get into this trade at 20 years old ?
Thank you so much for your videos, it is really helping a lot. Does your high school gpa have an effect on the getting accepted into the job, i wasn’t always book smart in school, and didn’t really focus on getting good grades but I would love to pursue my dreams as becoming an electrician.
Life has been rough for the past few years and I want to be successful in life.
what if i go to trade school for year , i didnt know about ibew
Are you an ISTP ?... I am, and you do seem similar in a way.
I like challenges but at the same time I want to have confidence in my skills and be able to rely on them to always solve it. Are you ever anxious about any projects thinking you won't be able to get it done ?
Can u plz show us what text books we need for beginners!!
