My journeyman is one of the worst person that I've known. " i don't teach u right because u are going to stole my job" study hard guys. Some will try to stop u.
Wow man, that’s a terrible way to treat your apprentice. I’ve been fortunate to have great journeymen but I’ve heard about those kind before. That’s really unfortunate and no way to keep the trade alive. The irony there is that while he thinks he’s retaining job security by not teaching anyone else how to do the job, he’s probably isn’t very valuable to his company and could end up losing his job for that very reason. Sorry you have to deal with that. 😕 Is there anyone you can talk to about that?
@@MadElectrician is fine. Because of that. I enrolled to a class in havc and i learned my job there. Now I'm going back for a electrician class level l,ll,lll. And my future looks better now. Also, i found out that the guy that didn't want to help me he doesn't understand the basics of electricity and now i know more than him. It's life i guess. Thank u for caring.
@@anotheronebitesthedust246 hey man I'm 25 and still don't know exactly what to do with my life I did college for a bit but didn't work out and well im trying to consider the trades, I want to consider being an electrician but from what I've heard and watched the process is tedious and not 100% guaranteed, ive been looking at HVAC too would you consider it being a more better option in terms going through a quicker process?
I was 20 in 1999. Became an electronics tech in the navy. Got kicked out after 2 years for pot. Around 30 went to college n 2 years of electronics engineering degree w honors. Overdosed from drugs. Here I am at 43. Serious considering this route. All you young men, learn from my mistakes. However, whether you are 60 or 20, it's all in your mind. You can do this. Be Smart!
Watched some of your videos last year after deciding to take different direction with my career. Applied to the IBEW. Studied for the test with the resources you provided. Got the interview in March and practiced for it with tips you gave. Had to wait until this month to find out whether I got in or not and I’m happy to say Local 26 here in VA has given me the apprentice position for this fall. Thanks for all your help during my journey. You made the process so easy and I’m so blessed to have been accepted. Thank you and glory to God.
I'm 19 living with my parents, currently working retail. I've been considering electrical work on and off the past year, and I'm gonna try to jump into it. It seems like it will be something I'd enjoy, and it pays a lot better than cashier work
Hey, right on! It's a fantastic career and I would highly recommend it! I have a video talking about the 20 things I love about being an electrician. Check it out if you haven't yet. Also, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out anytime. ⚡️
If being an electrician doesn't work out for any reason you could definitely be a talk show host or tv presenter. Really appreciate having the process boiled down into a concise and easy to understand video
This channel has been a big help! I’m 24 and deciding to make a career change into becoming an electrician. I have a good job right now with great benefits but it is horrible work place for my asthma. I know I’m gonna have to take a pay cut but it’ll be worth it in the long run. You have helped me with getting ready for applying for the apprenticeship, thanks a ton!
Hey Juan! Making these videos is my absolute pleasure. I’m really happy to hear that! That’s my goal 🙌🏼 I had to take a pay cut too when I first started, but it took no time at all for me to start making the same/ more. It will definitely be worth it. These raises come quick. If you take the precautions and just watch out for yourself then I don’t think your asthma should be much of an issue. If you have any questions about anything along the way then please don’t hesitate to reach out!
this process sounds complicated. im 28 i just applied with no experience at one place but they were hurting for workers so they just hired me without an interview. they had me doin labor work for the first couple weeks which was pretty overwhelming for me. now 1.5 months later they have me with a journeyman installing/bending conduit and strut racks all day long for a hospital. my feet dont hurt anymore and im actually excited to start my day.
Minimum requirements to be an electrician: -must have at least one DUI. -must have at least one deduction from your check on child support with verification on paper. -must show up on the job site already drunk. -must be able to work while drunk. And lately.....most important.....must be able to get stuff done even though they don’t have enough equipment nor material for you to finish the job. If you meet those minimum requirements then welcome! Just playing......but in most cases this is what you really get on the job sites with at least one of these issues that’s no joke. Did the entire IBEW apprenticeship and these issues are all I saw.
😂😂 Had a good chuckle from this. You are almost guaranteed to run into someone who fits that description when you're in construction. In my experience most electricians have actually been pretty professional, but I've met one or two that also fit that description 😂
It’s absolutely true! 20+ years since my first electrical program and I often wonder how many people from that class are still alive. Lots of addiction issues all around and it seems to extend into the sub trades as well. I know many who started out in the trade figured it was the easiest gig and provided the most opportunity for screwing around, funny since there are some pretty serious hazards involved!
Thanks man! I really appreciate that! It’s my pleasure to share what I know. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions about getting into the trade if this is a career you’re interested in pursuing. 👍🏼⚡️
Hey Jacob! Definitely not. Check out my video “Am I Too Old to Become an Electrician?” I made it for people specifically asking that question. Hope you find it to be informative!
This vid is really helpful! Im just graduating highschool and decided against going to college despite pressure from my family and school counselors. I did go to a vocational highschool and i did electrical and it was so fun! But i never thought of actually pursuing it till recently. Im just nervous because as a female im unsure if I'll be able to do the job as well as men because of physical strength 💪 but i am good at the work ive done at school im just concerned that i might be overwhelmed by the real thing.
Thanks for your feedback on this! Let me throw a little encouragement your way. First, it’s awesome that you’re considering this as a career, especially right out of high school. I think that’s the best time to get in. Most people, myself included, wish they decided to do this right out of high school. You will have a huge head start, and your pension will be incredible with all of those years in the trade. As far as being female, don’t let that stop you, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do this. I’ve worked alongside lots of incredible women in this trade and they have all been some of the hardest working electricians I’ve known. It’s becoming more of a normal thing to have women in this trade, and really any trade for that matter. If this is something that you want to do, then go for it. It’s definitely overwhelming at first, but I think everyone feels that way. Like anything, If you commit yourself to working hard and learning then you will quickly gain confidence and feel like you know what’s going on. I hope this helps. ⚡️
We need more women in the trades go for it. Im a Certified Welder planning on joining electric program soon. The 2 ladies that graduated with me were amazing hard working and one lady graduated at the top of the class and is now working for Nascar $35/hr... Mostly being a female in this new generation means doors are opening. Being a male myself I support every woman in the trades. So yea please come pursue a career in the trades
It doesn’t matter if you’re a female. If you enjoy electrical and want to skip paying $100,000 or more for college then do it. I’m a journeyman local 60. There’s so much work here in south Texas it’s crazy. Actually here they will take almost anyone. Right now they’re looking for over 50 journeymen. Over 50 CE’s. Over there it’s a little different to a certain extent. They don’t wait that long here. College class on Electrical theory😂 we have had helpers with zero experience and start putting them to work immediately. Alright people move away from Portland and move to south Texas. Seems like their process is way too long.
this isnt as physically demanding as some other jobs. and if you happen to be smaller you will have a much easier time on those jobs that require you be in some tighter places.
If your family is pressuring you to go college and if you want to go make sure you “pressure” them to pay for everything, school, books, gas to get to school.
Thanks again for all of the information! I used your guidance extensively during the last year and a half as I prepared before my local 275 opened the apprenticeship window, applying once it opened, studying for the aptitude test, touching up my resume, and preparing for the interview. I ended up ranking in the top 5, got my call to work a couple of days ago and have my first union electrician apprenticeship job starting this Wednesday! I don't think I would have been nearly as successful without your content as a resource. I'm extremely grateful. Thank you so much for what you do here!
First off - great videos. I love that someone is preparing the youth for the road ahead if they're hoping of pursuing the great spark trade. And I can appreciate that math COULD be very important to an electrician. mostly in school when learning the theory. I'm a journeyman in both Canada and the US with licenses in a couple different states, and a journeyman lineman to boot! But honestly I could go up to a couple weeks without having to math anything unless I need to calibrate an instrument with a weird specific gravity. So math is important for sure, but it's not like you need it all the time - it's just when you do need it, you really need it. If I can offer any further advice to viewers: don't shy away from the controls side of the trade, with everything getting more and more automated take advantage of learning about control circuits and relay logic and PLCs and even Arduino projects to get a leg up...you'll be in demand as soon as you get licensed and will never regret it.
Thank you for this comment. I've been really considering this career but math has always been a struggle for me. It's made me hesitate taking the first step towards becoming an electrician
Hey man! David told me that he talked to you about getting in! So awesome! David is a fantastic foreman. So much of what I know is because of him. I’m really happy to hear that you’re enjoying the channel! Feel free to reach out anytime with questions about anything. I know David is a great resource too. ⚡️
Thank you so much for the detail! I am a tutor/mentor and I provide your video link as a resource to my students who are interested in becoming an electrician. You are influencing many lives, sir. :)
i went through this process via a union as he mentions and it's a great breakdown in detail of what the process is like. I remember my bootcamp was stripping scrap wire and stocking the inventory carts for a couple weeks before i got my chance on a job site with a crew.
There was a journeyman that put this idea in my head yesterday. I work in agriculture as a heavy mechanic. And a large portion of my job is wiring in mag switches, wiring in breakers for 240v 3phase and 480v 3phase, motors, wiring transformers, ect. Well I really enjoy working with electricity. And he tried to poach me to his company and unfortunately I had to tell him I learned on the job and I am not certified. Made me feel good about my knowledge though that he thought I had my license. But it made me think... I enjoy the work, I find it interesting... maybe I should pursue that... and I probably have a leg up on some with my experience.
Thank you for this video. I just took my aptitude test and once I get my next step, will need to polish up on my interview . Your videos will help me alot!!
Just filled out my application and sent my transcripts in. Very very nervous to be leaving my job. Thanks for the videos man, watched em all. I’m getting a lot of flack for switching from my career to electrician. All my other jobs have been troubleshooting sitting at a desk.. red tape everywhere and scarce promotions and no pride in the work.. Hope to be my own boss one day in electrical work and doing it well! Thanks again!
AS for a WA non union electrician (myself) : Answered a craig's list add for a new apprentice wanted, ( No testing, no school grades required, No waiting) Went and got my $65 apprentices card from L&I. Received hands on trained and schooled privately from Master/State Inspector. 48 hours of education needed and i paid close to $150 per 8 hour class. Got my 4000 hours and passed my test within 3 years. Started in 2014. Now as 02 "Resi" making over $30hr. No heavy competition in non union. Sadly the state rules for going to through a certified apprenticeship 01 means i would take over a $10 pay cut. That was an easy nope with a wife, 4 kids, 2 cars and a house. So I'm staying 02 for now. After 8 years now doing electrical and working for one of the top companies in Clark County I am very happy having NO college debt. Wish i had started at 20 not 34. Side note: There are bad Electrical contractors out there in the non union field. Stay away from anyone sending unlicensed people out in their own van, not pulling permits, working out of ratio, and on the job drug use. I work with and know state and city inspectors, as well as the compliance team and they are cracking down and tossing out fines left and right. For a Union path this is a great video but just missing the non union path. Great. video though!
Same here. Passed the background check. Did good on the aptitude test, and now my interview is scheduled Nov 9th. Lil nervous but I know that with my dedication and if they give me a chance to completely switch trades, considering my immaculate work ethic, they won't regret it boys. Wish me luck
I’m halfway through trade school getting a degree in Small Industrial Electrician, studying for my journeyman’s test by reading the NEC from cover to cover, yet no one will hire me on as an apprentice because I don’t have any experience on the job, but I don’t have any experience on the job because no one will hire me as an apprentice. Catch 22
I literally have no schooling or experience and I started a apprenticeship four days ago I'm literally ass backwards with it lol but I called like 20 different companies and found the right guy and perfect opportunity he had just finished training his first one and was ready to expand his company.
I watched your videos all while i was applying and preparing for the test and interview. And now I got recommended your channel after watching an youtube video for my apprenticeship homework. Thanks for inspiring me to take this journey Stephen!
Hi gang! Just here to say I moved to Tampa on the 8th. Applied for a private internship. Got a call for an interview yesterday. Absolutely crushed it today and got offered a job on the spot 😎 one more interview to go 🤞🏼 maybe I’ll get 2 offers today
Right on Nate! That's really great to hear. My dad is a steamfitter and that career/ trade has been really good to him. That too is a great route to go!
Thank you for the tips!!! I’m in the process of getting into ibew, I live in Longview, but the trip will be more than worth it. I’ve been around the electrical world most of my life. My uncle was a journeyman electrician and I spent every weekend working with him. I still haven’t stopped loving electrical work. Don’t know why I waited so long to start... but hey, it’s never too late
I had a really good job but my last day was yesterday, Friday, and I start my apprenticeship this coming Monday!! Nervous because I’ve only changed 2 ceiling fans in my life and a few outlets but you have me hopeful!!
Would you mind giving a bit of an update? I'm in the same position as you were 8 months ago and it makes me nervous, I'd love to hear it this worked out for you!
bro you're so cool, I just recently passed my aptitude test and I'm honestly a little nervous when it comes to the interview, I'm going to be relying on you so heavily and Im so thankful I found your channel
I appreciate that! That's really great to hear! Definitely be prepared to explain why you want to be an electrician and why they should choose you. You may be asked other questions too so just try to go in as prepared as possible for whatever they throw at you. Your portfolio is a big part of the interview too, so check out that video if you haven't yet. Wishing you the best of luck on your interview! ⚡️
Yes, being an electrician is risky business but it's rewarding if that's what you want to do and is a high paying career. Something we need more of these days. Especially with the cost of living present. Yes, reading is crucial for any job and math is also important. Math isn't my strongest subject. I understand basic math but not the more advanced stuff.
Hey, thanks for the sub! I appreciate it 🥳 This is a really great career. It's definitely one of the best decisions that I've ever made. Hopefully my channel can serve as a good resource for you as you go through the steps to make it happen ⚡️
Thank you so much for this info I’m 26 looking to get in to the trade with no experience, been in the food and bev business over 8 years and I think it’s time I pick up a career that I can actually see myself enjoying, I’ll definitely be attempting the union route I’ll be applying for my local ibew apprenticeship this week! And I’ll be doing as much research as i can along the way, Watching your videos definitely gives me some confidence in getting started ASAP
Same here brother, I was in the military and upon getting out worked at edison in operations and customer billing. I’m 27 now with no experience but just looking for a change
I love your videos dude!!! The coffee intro...NEVER CHANGE...Please...😁 I'm about to apply for an apprenticeship with the local union in DC...your videos are really helpful...Thank You✌
Thanks man! I’m not planning on changing that intro any time soon 😂 YES!! That’s awesome! I wish you the best of luck with your whole application process. If I can be any more help to you throughout the process let me know! I’m happy to answer any questions you have as they come up 👍🏼
Just wanted to say thanks again! I'm through my first complete year of apprenticeship at Local 275 and your videos were extremely helpful in getting me through the application/aptitude test/interview process. Definitely would not have been as prepared without your content!
I currently install windows and I use many tools. I use cutoff wheels to cut J molding and other metals, I use a circular saw to cut OSB or other kinds of wood, I use an impact to disassemble window frames (or a paint scrapper on some frames), an AC/DC detector if I ever work around live wires. I have construction experience I don’t have any experience in electrical though; but I know basic wire types like Romex, Coax, UF, Aluminum Clad wires and Low Voltage. I also know how to strip wire. I know Romex has a bare wire which is the ground, black is negative and white is positive. I notice most houses use 12 or 14 gauge wires I think I’ll apply to become an apprentice this coming March. I hope I get in my first time. I can work with my uncle for the next several months until I get in. If I fail my first time, I’ll take a class at school and apply to be a helper
my current job shares an office with my area’s IBEW local and i’ve recently gotten the notion that i should see about getting on as an apprentice with them… you are a tremendous resource and i’m even more inspired to do it after watching. thank you so much!
Hey Stephen, just wanted to stop by and say thank you for these videos. Truly. I got inspired by you almost a year ago to pursue an apprenticeship with the IBEW. Since then I've successfully navigated the whole process and today got a letter saying that I ranked #10 in my zone for Inside Wireman. These videos and comments have been invaluable to me during the waiting and periodic steps along the way. Keep up the good work. Local 280. I'll have to get you a beer sometime!
I’m 26, currently an Air Traffic Controller, i’ve recently learned how to and installed LEDs in my car and since learned about wiring, wire tapping, soldering, wiring techniques, voltage, wattage, wire gauges and such and I love it. I’ve since had a curiosity to become an electrician. Thanks man
That’s crazy I wanted to be air traffic controller but didn’t really know how to get into that field I’m Already a dispatcher at the airport but not air traffic controller
@@Justjackson7 I was fortunate enough to become an Air Traffic Controller in the Army. After my first deployment I was offered an ATC position as a contractor and been doing that ever since.
@@Justjackson7 the FAA will announce entry level openings for the general public (try following the FAA Facebook page, checking the FAA website, or USAJOBS). You apply, and if accepted you'll have to take an exam called the ATSA basically seeing if you are mentally suitable for the job. if you pass that then the next step is waiting to go to the FAA Academy (FAA Air Traffic Control School) and if you pass the school then depending how good you did will determine your list of facilities you can choose from depending on what region you chose or were given.
I’m glad you found it too! A channel like this is what I wished I had when I was applying for the apprenticeship so I’m happy to be able to be that channel for other people ⚡️
I appreciate the video man! I moved to Portland about a year ago and I am taking a couple math classes right now at PCC. I hope I get accepted into the program when I apply.
I want to thank you for sharing this. Really appreciate it ive had no adult to ever really teach or explain how to succeed in life. So thank you again youve helped me on my mission to become a jorneyman apprentice 🙏💯💯
It’s my pleasure, Eduardo! You have a bright future ahead of you, especially if you’re already taking it this seriously! Feel free to reach out anytime with any questions you might have if this is a career that you end up pursuing ⚡️
Hey man thanks for the videos! Just turned 20 years old a few days ago and I’m super interested in getting into this. I’ve been working at T-Mobile and also building houses on the side with my dad. I’m sick of t-Mobile and looking to start something that I can enjoy and create a nice future with, and these videos help a lot!
I'm 19, in my second semester of college going after a Biochemistry degree, and completely hating college. Thanks for this video. Seriously considering dropping out for a trade career
Im 34, a apprentice for a drywall and framing company, i enjoy what i do but i need more out of a career at this point in life. Wish i would've thought like this sooner but oh well,i finally applied to ibew local 100 and im waiting on a test date. Been studying so hope all goes well, im ready for something better for myself and my family.
Hey Alex! That’s really awesome to hear! I think we all come to a point where we decide that maybe we should switch things up for one reason or another. You may take a pay cut at first, but in my opinion it will be well worth it in the end. Plus, your experience in drywall and framing will make you more valuable as an apprentice since you’ll have a lot of trade knowledge right out of the gates. Thanks for watching and best of luck to you! ⚡️
Hey man! I watched all your videos on this and it helped me get into the apprenticeship. I just want to say thanks for putting time into making this video
im looking into switching careers to improve myself and my financial standing. Im 30 and I had worked in several fields , automotive manufacturing, steel work, cable technician , food manufacturing and graduated culinary to become a chef. I found out while working in the restaurant and hospitality industry, that it was not for me and the money was great for me to support my self or my girlfriend. I am worried that I will be to old to start out on this an have a-lot of catching up to do. but i really want to make some real life changes , have a solid career for life and make really good money. I am a hard work, always ready to learn . Ive recently found your channel and this is really helpful. the city I live in a major city with alot of construction jobs and a local IBEW union.I was wrestling with the idea if I want to go to trade school or start an apprenticeship , im thinking the latter would be the best option
Right on man! I’m glad to hear that you’re interested in pursuing the trade and that my videos have been helpful! When I was a store manager at AT&T I made customer service my top priority and consequently the growth we saw at our store was pretty significant. I just try to apply that same philosophy here on UA-cam and have been pretty amazed at the response from people. I appreciate the feedback!
@@MadElectrician keep on making awesome content! If you’re taking suggestions, it would be cool to see how to get in the union from a female perspective/being a female electrician (if you can find someone trusted to aid with that video). I’m a woman and I’m not apprehensive about sexual harassment or anything, just about being physically smaller and hindering the work
Ahh, sorry about that! I didn’t click on your picture or anything before responding. Shouldn’t have made that assumption. 🤦🏽♂️ That is actually a video idea that I’ve had since I first started posting videos. It’s a topic that I really want to cover but I’m just waiting to find the right person to interview/ make a video with. I’ll will definitely do that video some day though, and hopefully sooner than later. What I will say right now though is that I’ve worked along side and had school with many women who are fantastic electricians. I’ve never seen any sort of different in what women can do compared to men. It also seems to pretty much be a normal thing to have women in the trade now which is great. The IBEW really pushes to bring more women into the trade, and for that reason you might actually have a bit of an advantage getting into the apprenticeship if you do eventually apply. Funny enough I was thinking about doing this topic again today. Thanks for the recommendation and I’ll definitely get a video posted about this eventually ⚡️
this video is really getting me excited, im currently at PCC a community college near me for a pre apprenticeship hopefully this summer im going towards inside electrician at local 48 thanks for the video!!
It’s my pleasure! It’s a fantastic career and I would highly recommend it. Hopefully my channel can serve as a good resource for you if you are looking into joining the trade. Thanks for watching! ⚡️
As someone trying to even find entry into the trade, there is 100% not a lack of people looking to join the trades, the older trades people are absolutely lying. But there absolutely is a MASSIVE barrier to entry to all trades. Even in this video you say the entry point is looking for experience, how does that make any sense?
Idk why I thought these videos looked like a scam to me but I was curious on what he was gonna say so I clicked on it and I’m glad I did. Never judge a book by its cover
Hey man, all the content in your videos is helping me out tremendously. I really appreciate you putting this info out. I have some questions about the apprenticeship. 1)for the schooling hours, are there test throughout the program? 2) what is the estimated time length that it takes to get through the application process and get started on the OJT & schooling hours? 3) how are the classes taught? Such as a lecture? Hands on and labs? 4) what are some main subjects that are taught and which have been the most difficult? Thank you very much!
Hey Tyler! All great questions. I’m really glad to hear that you’re enjoying the videos! 1) Yes, there are tests all throughout the classroom part of your apprenticeship. I believe the curriculum is the same across the board for IBEW apprentices. We have a test every class going over the homework from the previous week. Then there are final exams, code tests, and also craft certifications (craft certifications are testing you more on the hands on stuff). 2) Typically the whole application process takes three months. One month to apply, another for your test, and another for your interview. Then depending on the rank that you get on your list, that will determine how quickly you start. I ranked 64 on the list and our training center was taking in 18 new apprentices each month. So I started my apprenticeship three months after my interview, which meant that it was actually six months after I initially applied that I started my apprenticeship. 3) The classes are actually a combination of those. Mainly lectures, but also hands on labs for some of it. 4) There are lots of different subjects (dc theory, ac theory, motor controls, grounding/ bonding, fire alarm, PLC’s, etc. The term that most people struggle with at our training center is 4th term (it’s very math heavy and has lots of theory/ circuit calculations). That was actually one of my best terms but I’ve always been pretty decent with math. I haven’t really struggled with any of the terms, but I think that’s because I spend a lot of time reading/ studying the material so that I know I actually understand it. Maybe I’ll eventually make a video talking about some of this stuff. Hope that helps though! Hit me with more questions as you think of them. I’m happy to help and I really do want to be a good resource for people. ⚡️
From my research it seems IBEW local 48 has materials handler positions, and they get all the same fringe benefits as well. Im guessing if you cant get an apprenticeship right away then this could be the next best thing. (Stephen specified this) You're still in the union with the great benefits(pension, medical, etc) and assuming you're a hard worker they cant pass you up forever. If you really truly want this then I think it pays to wait!
100%! Thanks for reiterating that and also giving your suggestion. I think that becoming a material handler is a great first step and probable the most logical too. I actually have a full video talking about it. It's probably the best way to go for those who are willing to wait and put in the work.
Thank you for this video and many others! I am a senior in high school and was initially considering the automotive field because I have always loved cars, but I did research on that career field and I am not so sure now due to job outlook and pay. I was also looking at the electrician field because overall it looks like the better option. The more I do research, the more I get excited about it. I have loved things like this too. I had a circuit kit when I was in elementary school and whenever electricians work around the house I always am interested in the work they are doing. My parents and family want me to go to college but there are many things that interest me that don't require me getting a college degree. My grades are good in my opinion (Mostly As and a fair amount of Bs) so they think that I should go to college because of that. However, I don't want to go to college if I have a plan already that doesn't involve that. I'm not against college. Becoming an electrician seems like the best choice right now. There are tons of advancement opportunities. Tons of benefits and there looks to be a consistent need for electrical expertise. Thank you for these very informative videos. -A high school senior from Ohio.
I worked as an apprentice for a journeyman, I learned alot, I even got to wire at a hotel and a plaza, and went on to wire an Entire automotive business by myself , never got to be a journeyman tho
That's a great video suggestion. I've actually thought about doing something similar to that. I want to do a specific video showing what residential, commercial/ industrial, and low voltage are all like. Then I want to do a video where I also compare the three and talk about the differences. Thanks for watching and for the suggestion!
Electrician is something I considered about 15 years ago, but for various reasons, never pulled the trigger. I’ve considered giving it a shot, but I’ll be 38 this year and have a family. Been talking to the wife about it, but not still hit sure if it’s something viable for me. I may apply to the IBEW, but I’ve obviously been out of school for a while. Guess I could look into he non union route as well. How hard would it be on someone that has a family to get into this late? Would I have to work a lot to make enough money? Would I be gone all the time, especially the first couple years?
Id go non union while trying to get into the union. Depending on your local it can take years to join. A lot of people don’t make it in the first time around. Also its pretty easy, on paper it seems confusing but most of the formulas and what not you wont ever really use. Maybe here and there but its rare. Especially as a new apprentice, if anything like that needed to be done that’s where the jman or master step in, and teach as they do what’s needed. If you can walk, bend over and carry stuff you’ll be fine.
First and foremost, thank you for all your guidance so far. Would you still recommend applying to become a material handler if I have 2 years of trade experience (carpentry, concrete, and roofing?) I went to college out of high school and got my degree but I’m getting into my late 20’s with no set career path. I applied to IBEW Local 48 and have been studying away for the aptitude test.
Hey Riley! Wow, that's incredible! Great job! Thanks for sharing! Do you think that you'll be starting soon based on how many people your local is taking in?
@@MadElectrician yeah I'm in oregon as well. I have a company lined up to take me in as a material handler until I'm accepted into the apprenticeship. Did you have something else in mind?
Great Video man! I am 24 and interested in this field of trade. I was wondering if It’s possible to get my foot in the door without any schooling in any college programs? Can I apply for an apprenticeship to a company right now and take the proper steps you suggested in the video? Many thanks.
Hey man! I got into the program without any schooling or college programs myself. It’s totally possible! Check out my “Applying for the Apprenticeship” video. It’s one of my newer ones. I talk a lot about that and how to make yourself stand out. If you’re going the union route you’ll need to apply for the apprenticeship before you start working for a company; however, one thing that you can totally do that a lot of people do is look into becoming a material handler first through the IBEW before applying for the actual apprenticeship. You can contact your local union hall to apply for that. It’s a great way to learn the material and get your foot in the door so that you’re a more qualified applicant for the apprenticeship when you actually apply for it. Definitely check out that video though. I think it will answer a lot of your questions. Hope that helps!
Great videos !! I’m currently considering following this career path. I’m currently 30 years old so I’m a little worried. I was wondering would you be able to make a video or explain what the classroom portion is like?
Thanks, Nicole! That's a video that I'm actually very excited about doing! I already have lots of ideas for that video and I think that it will be one of my best. I need to get permission from the training center first to float around the training center for a day to get some good footage for that video. I 100% plan on doing that though, and hopefully sometime soon! Thanks for the suggestion ⚡️
@@MadElectrician wassup bro i need a word of advise .. im currently a highscool graduate. & been thinking on what i should do with my life so i began choosing this route. I have no experience but i am a smart worker & love to hustle . So would the first step i should take is contacting the IBEW ?
Finished my interview a month ago, scored fairly high, and high on my test, should I be worried they haven’t called me yet? It’s been over a month. And there is very little competition in my area.
I’m going to paste my comment from the other video you commented on so people can see my response here too: Hey David! I would suggest calling your local as and asking them what your rank is and when you can expect to start. I actually called 2-3 times just asking about my rank before I was finally called and told that it was time for me to start my apprenticeship. They shouldn’t mind you calling and asking.
Hey man, your videos helped me a ton through this process, I was super stoked to find somebody with the local 48 on youtube and your insight was extremely helpful. I just finished my interview and got placed 128th on the ranked list; not great, not terrible. Any idea how big the list is currently? I'm a soldier in the National Guard and we're going to be deploying in 2022, so I'm really hoping I can get started and actually become an apprentice before I have to leave. Thanks again for everything you do!
For me here at Local 48 I got scheduled for an aptitude test within about a month. With everything that’s going on right now though things could be different. Still, I’d probably expect to hear something within a month or so.
I'm 24 years old, just about a year from getting out the marine corps. Ive been looking into this trade for a while now but this video has simplified steps that actually make sense to me. Will definitely be following the next few videos.
Got out in 2014 Semper Fi my advice go ahead and do it man don't wait. I'm 32 now and I wish I had just did it when I first got out, I'm just now trying to get on with the IBEW program.
However he did redo his mom house breaker boxe.. she had the screw ones in the box..she got the materia..he fixed it!! He was so surprised!! He did awesome..
Thinking of starting the apprenticeship, Im able to take my dog to my current job and am wondering if there are electricians that take their dog to work aswell? I dont have a yard to leave him at home.
Thanks for reaching out! Generally electricians are doing work at construction sites, peoples places of business or even other peoples homes. I don’t really see any way that brining your dog to work with you would be possible. Mainly because it would be putting his safety at risk (if you were on some sort of construction site) but also because the company you work for most likely wouldn’t allow it. Good question though 👍🏼
Is there anyone you can talk to about that?

Watched some of your videos last year after deciding to take different direction with my career. Applied to the IBEW. Studied for the test with the resources you provided. Got the interview in March and practiced for it with tips you gave. Had to wait until this month to find out whether I got in or not and I’m happy to say Local 26 here in VA has given me the apprentice position for this fall.
Thanks for all your help during my journey. You made the process so easy and I’m so blessed to have been accepted.

Yup cuz that's a realistic fallback
Being an electrician obviously worked for him 😂
This channel has been a big help! I’m 24 and deciding to make a career change into becoming an electrician. I have a good job right now with great benefits but it is horrible work place for my asthma. I know I’m gonna have to take a pay cut but it’ll be worth it in the long run. I had to take a pay cut too when I first started, but it took no time at all for me to start making the same/ more. It will definitely be worth it. These raises come quick.

this process sounds complicated. im 28 i just applied with no experience at one place but they were hurting for workers so they just hired me without an interview. they had me doin labor work for the first couple weeks which was pretty overwhelming for me. now 1.5 months later they have me with a journeyman installing/bending conduit and strut racks all day long for a hospital. my feet dont hurt anymore and im actually excited to start my day.
This is a crazy broken system that actually makes it crazy hard for anyone who isn’t in a large city or who doesn’t have connections
Minimum requirements to be an electrician:
-must have at least one DUI.
😂😂
Had a good chuckle from this. You are almost guaranteed to run into someone who fits that description when you're in construction. In my experience most electricians have actually been pretty professional, but I've met one or two that also fit that description 😂
No that’s really a thing😂
I couldn’t turn out until I was on my second wife, being garnished for child support, and had a drinking problem😂
I have 3 of the 5 listed 😭😭
I'm a drunk and a rapist

@@MadElectrician Hello, is 30 too old to become an Electrician.
Hey Jacob!
Definitely not. Check out my video “Am I Too Old to Become an Electrician?”
I made it for people specifically asking that question.
Thanks for your comment! Math has never been my subject so as soon as he said algebra my heart sank.

Wow, somehow I missed this comment. That’s so cool to hear and very encouraging! Thank you for watching and sharing my content! ⚡️
i went through this process via a union as he mentions and it's a great breakdown in detail of what the process is like.
Right on! Happy to hear that. It’s my pleasure!

Almost 30, spent the past decade screwing around with crappy jobs. Hoping I can get an apprenticeship and turn this all around.

I have construction experience
I don’t have any experience in electrical though; but I know basic wire types like Romex, Coax, UF, Aluminum Clad wires and Low Voltage. I also know how to strip wire. I know Romex has a bare wire which is the ground, black is negative and white is positive. I notice most houses use 12 or 14 gauge wires

I'm 19, in my second semester of college going after a Biochemistry degree, and completely hating college. Thanks for this video. Seriously considering dropping out for a trade career
I’m 19, haven’t gone into college yet but that has been my exact fear about a college pathway. Electrical work sounds lit ⚡️
how did it go?
@dudecool7915 @april_ any update what you guys are doing now ??
Thank you so much I'm 17 and want to become an electrician
Right on man! You're very welcome! It's a fantastic career and I would obviously highly recommend it! ⚡️
I come from an IBEW family (local 246) and I’ve been thinking about going into the trade. Your videos are really useful and responses very thoughtful.
That is actually a video idea that I’ve had since I first started posting videos.
@@MadElectrician awesome. Thank you for the helpful videos and I’m happy to support. ❣️
this video is really getting me excited, im currently at PCC a community college near me for a pre apprenticeship hopefully this summer im going towards inside electrician at local 48 thanks for the video!!
Where did you apply for that class?
Your intro with the coffee is phenomenal, props!
Thank you for the info. Im looking to become an electrician 💛 as my first step to becoming a nuclear reactor operator.
I’ve decided today to pull the trigger. Wish me luck guys. 9/10/2021 and thank you for this video. #pdx
how did it go?
Idk why I thought these videos looked like a scam to me but I was curious on what he was gonna say so I clicked on it and I’m glad I did. Never judge a book by its cover
This is awesome. A mock interview would be super helpful
Really love these videos! My 17 y/o son in Pittsburgh wants to apply to be an apprentice after he graduates HS!!
Thank you for this.
This is in-depth.
Thankyou brother. A true sparky !! ZAP
This video is very useful and helpful for me so thank a lot bro...
Right on bro, glad to hear it!
Video is exactly what I need. Thanks
I have a learning disability but i have a pretty big interest in how electronics work so hopefully I’ll have a good chance at success.
I'm 43 n I feel this calling 😁💯💯💯
genuinely good info thank you
Thanks man! Glad you’re finding it useful ⚡️
Become an electrical engineer. Sounds like a fair career.
I worked as an apprentice for a journeyman, I learned alot, I even got to wire at a hotel and a plaza, and went on to wire an Entire automotive business by myself , never got to be a journeyman tho
Virtually best intro mad dramatic 😭😭
☕️⚡️
I'm looking forward to start working as an electrician but my math skills is really not that great
Same boat to... I slept through all that in High school lol
@@BloodyKnives66 yeah man same, I'm good with numbers but I'm bad with formulas and equation
If science and math are not your thing, then go be a drywall hanger.
can you do a video on the differences of residential electricians and inside electricians?
That's a great video suggestion. I've actually thought about doing something similar to that. I want to do a specific video showing what residential, commercial/ industrial, and low voltage are all like. Then I want to do a video where I also compare the three and talk about the differences.
Thanks for watching and for the suggestion!
I’m looking into this a lot. I’m only a junior in high school but and very interested in this job right after high school!
Im in portland too bro. Going back to school and plan on trying to join the ibew. Thats crazy youre in PDX too 🎉
Electrician is something I considered about 15 years ago, but for various reasons, never pulled the trigger.
Just took my interview last Wednesday. Ranked 21
Man I feel so lucky to have started doing electrician work since I was 13
This was great. Really good info, thanks!
Thanks! Happy to hear that you enjoyed it! Feel free to reach out any time with questions ⚡️
Thank you for making this video 👍🏼
My math is horrible and I feel like that might hold me back in choosing this as a career

Great video man I wanna get into being an electrician and this is great tips
Thanks Riki!
I appreciate you watching and I’m happy to hear that! ⚡️
Good stuff mate
I appreciate it man 🤙🏼
Great Video man!
@@jeezy3049 how are you doing now?
Finished my interview a month ago, scored fairly high, and high on my test, should I be worried they haven’t called me yet? It’s been over a month. And there is very little competition in my area.
I’m going to paste my comment from the other video you commented on so people can see my response here too:
Hey David! I would suggest calling your local as and asking them what your rank is and when you can expect to start. I actually called 2-3 times just asking about my rank before I was finally called and told that it was time for me to start my apprenticeship. They shouldn’t mind you calling and asking.
Technically you shouldn’t have to call but it doesn’t hurt. It also shows an initiative on your part.
Update: got a call yesterday, got accepted, finished up my paperwork today, start work Monday!
@@thepackersfan2011 Good job David!

I’m realllly really considering this
Hey man, your videos helped me a ton through this process, I was super stoked to find somebody with the local 48 on youtube and your insight was extremely helpful.
Thank you dude!! Priceless and useful information! Mad respect.
It’s my pleasure bro! I’m just happy people actually want to watch my videos 😂
@@MadElectrician Quick question! Once I submitted my application, how long does it take for a response? I applied in IBEW Local 3 NY
For me here at Local 48 I got scheduled for an aptitude test within about a month. With everything that’s going on right now though things could be different. Still, I’d probably expect to hear something within a month or so.
