Don't let age stop you if you really want to do it. I'm 42, was losing my mind sitting behind a desk all day, so I took the leap and now I'm 6 mths into my 1st yr as an apprentice. I also know a 51 yr old who's going into her 5th yr. I do wish I would've started when I was younger, but I probably would've thrown away the opportunity. Everything happens at the right time. Thanks for the video, very motivating.

I got laid off from Tesla last month May 5th, 2024 after 3 years of hard work with no given notice. I was out of town working for them while this happened btw. I immediately enrolled into school to get my CDL’s because I didn’t want to just sit around and do nothing. My third week into school, the union finally called me back up after 2 years to see if I’m still interested in the program. Well I just finished my OSHA training on Sunday and I’m already starting my 5 year apprenticeship with IBEW Local 11. Long story short, never loose faith and never give up on what you want! I’m Local 11 in Los Angeles, if you don’t mind having to commute (which almost everyone has to do anyway) then you should definitely apply as it is a much bigger local and they take on more apprentices.

Think about it, you first have to e an electrician, the businessman side can't be taught as easily as the trade. Like I say, we're all good at the trade, but we tend to suck at business. As a 28 years old guy I have finally decided to move to a different career, (electrician apprentice) and start again in something im pretty sure I am going to enjoy. I’m 46 and been applying to jobs for the past few years, but only getting few responses and no job offers. Apprenticeships are hard to find. I’ve basically been hired in an electrical apprenticeship program through Watson Electrical in NC. I take the drug test today and waiting for the background to be completed. The pay is low to start but I’m getting per diem. It’s a NC certified/approved and regulated program. After the 4 year apprenticeship I can enroll in Construction Management Training and become a Foreman, Supervisor, or Superintendent, which is where I’d like to be by the time I turn 50.

Appreciate all your videos. I live in Vancouver WA. So right across from you actually. I'm 31 and touching up on some math now. Where would you say i should go to apply for apprenticeship? Any recommendations appreciated!

I honestly wish I didn’t go to school for my electrical degree, the only job I could land was with my local school system only paying $16.84/hr. Pay sucks here in southeastern Kentucky. Theirs no unions in my area

It's difficult getting into the IBEW, so be careful!
You can wait up to five years...

I'm working on my math before I apply to your home local. I have 13 years in non union Telecom. I understand the math and everything but I suck without a calculator.

Shouldn't you be too busy for this kind of video given the current weather conditions in Portland? Jokes aside, thank you for the video. Very informative! :)

Well, I am a violin teacher and orchestra leader. You've probably heard me in soundtracks like Frozen, Iron Man 3, and lots more. But i decided to change careers. Im not going into electrician though, I am going into HVAC. I'm sure I can transfer the skills I learn from HVAC to electrician. The reason I decided to change is because I don't want to see another set of kids grow up, its heart breaking for me.

I know you said pay varies, but Portland Oregon #48 is the 18th highest paid area out of the ~300 IBEW locals, putting it around the top 5%. Here in Florida, the average IBEW pay is about 60K a year. I earn a little more than that here and am still struggling.
