I just recently started wanting to become an Electrician right after I get out of highschool (senior at 17 years old right now) and these videos have made me want to achieve that goal even more. I want to thank you for pushing me to want to take part in this career.
One of the best decisions I made while back. I was married at that time when I joined Electrical Apprenticeship. No debt, school was paid for. Definitely would Recommend this trade for someone who doesn’t want to go to school full time. Great money and room to grow if you want to be a foreman or JF.
I interviewed for my local last week, I just got a letter in the mail today stating that they ranked me 6th on the two year list. I felt like the interview went great. Hopefully they pull my card soon!
I know this video is 2 years old at the time of writing this, but it really makes someone think about entering this trade. I'm gonna be 40 this year and just want something more than just working in a kitchen.
Thanks for creating this channel man! I'm 24 and just thought about becoming an electrician. I think this career is universal. I can travel and use this trade in different countries. 😃. Just subbed to you!
Right on! Thanks, I really appreciate it! It’s a fantastic career and definitely something that you can travel with. Send questions my way as you think of them and I’ll be more than happy to answer them for you if I can. ⚡️👍🏼
Bro!! So stoked for you! It’s so cool to see how you’ve spent so much time being dedicated to getting in and now you’re finally accepted after all this time. Huge congratulations to you! We’ll deserved. You’ll have to celebrate with a nice marvelous malt 🥃⚡️
@@MadElectrician Thanks brother! I should be getting a job assignment sometime in the next week and school starts in the fall. I’m beyond excited! Can’t believe this is finally happening!
Hey, right on man! Good for you for considering this right out of high school! It’s a golden opportunity hidden in plain sight that most people don’t even consider. Such a great career. Maybe some day you can be my apprentice 😂
you know I've felt so lost on what to do for so long. But thanks to guys like u with the videos u make, I feel like I finally have a direction and path I wanna take career-wise until I get my music career up and running. Thank u so much for spreading the info:)
I’m 17 I decided to become an electrician 1 year ago I turn 18 in 5 months I’m just waiting to graduate and get my license I already watch so many of your videos, thank you. You have help me a lot I’ve been studying math in khan academy for over a year for hours everyday 3-6 so I can be prepare. Thank you i live in wa and I want to apply to the Ibew 46. Thank you man.🙏🏼 God bless you.
Thank you for the info. To be honest, I had already made the decision to pursue an Electrician's Apprenticeship through my local IBEW before discovering your channel, however I must say that your passion for the trade is apparent and inspiring. I look forward to utilizing your advice as I embark on the greatest journey of my life. Thanks again. I am pulling the trigger on this!
Hey Zach! I’m really glad to hear that you’re pulling the trigger on pursuing this as a career! Thanks for the encouraging feedback and I’m really happy to hear that my videos are inspiring people to do this. Feel free to reach out to me as you progress through the application process and I’ll be happy to help answer questions you have along the way. ⚡️
Nice man, good luck with your interview! I have another video on the IBEW interview process and my experience with it. Check it out if you haven’t already, it may be useful to you.
Just applied a week ago for the local ibew apprenticeship, pretty much checking the jatc website every day to see if ive been assigned a date for the test. Cant wait to get in the program. Thanks!!!!
Right on man! Possibly the first step in one of the best decisions of your life! Just put in the effort beforehand and be ready to kill it at your aptitude test and interview and you’ll make it in no problem ⚡️ If you haven’t seen already, I made videos to help with the aptitude test and interview, so make sure to check those out if you haven’t yet. I think they’ll help you to be well prepared. 🤘🏼
This video has made me make the decision that I’m pursuing this trade. I’ve been at odds with deciding due to me working 100% commission job, but after watching this I’m going for it. It makes sense since I’m pursuing real estate investing as well.
My goal is to stick with my current lifestyle (only making 17/hr, living in small $500/mo apt) while being an apprentice. Save up my money and live like I’m broke and buy my first investment property. You can do it!
@@mr.twenty-ten6319 28 here and same, wish I did electrician/plumbing straight out of highschool.. I've tried a few different paths that my school, family and society values pushed me into doing (university courses) and haven't found anything I love and have racked up debt... I've had a few physical jobs and have always felt a high satisfaction at the end of the day and daily interactions with other hard working people.. I'm about to start an apprenticeship at this age which may seem sucky but by the time I'm 32 I'll be fully qualified which is certainly fine.. go for it if you havn't and are still considering it.
I'm almost 20 and somewhat slacking on my electrical course I started last year (covid happened so didn't make much sense studying Mechatronics on online uni), so I needed this video to have the confidence that the next few months of putting in the time now will pay off.
Really considering this trade. Been out of school for a few years but still young at 22. Know nothing about the trade , but these videos are very helpful. Thank you , right above you in Olympia Washington the great PNW🙏🏼 Gonna study more on this trade and watch all your videos thank you
Hey Nathan! I’m really glad to hear that you’re enjoying the videos and finding them to be helpful! Yes, the great PNW! Gotta love the upper left USA! You’re still very young to be getting into this trade and you will have a very long career ahead of you with a great pension at the end of you start now. Definitely keep learning and studying and do everything you can to make sure that you get in if this is something you really want to do. Keep in touch and reach out if you have any questions that I can help answer for you. I’m happy to help however I can ⚡️
I watched this video and the video where you explained what you didn’t like about it and i gotta say you really helped me out on making my decision on being a electrician, I’ve been considering this job for awhile and now I’m certain that this is the job i want to do. I know I’m not the smartest person in the world at all (lol) but I’m willing to learn it rather it’s difficult or not. So thank you so much for this video and I hope you and your family have a great day
@@robtheservantof6257 it can be difficult if you dont know what is going on. i am completely lost due to not being in school for years before applying. but for some it could be extremely easy.
@@johnopdyke4141 that's great Advice actually. So I'm A senior in High School and Have just started to clean up my act and focus on my future since junoir year so I def6 maybe should Know more than I do but I'm not like dumb😂I think I'll be able to do it the only thing I'm worried about is safety man. It sounds seriously dangerous and like anything could happen
@@robtheservantof6257 it can be dangerous, especially if you have no idea what is going on hence why we have the schooling and on the job experience as an apprentice. My advice is to start the apprenticeship before applying to trade school so you can do both at the same time, I didnt do that while all my fellow classmates already had that. That was my mistake. And now I'm completely lost because i learn from hands on activities.
Totally synchronistic that I discovered this channel last Friday, given that IBEW Local 48 is the one I was looking into, on the recommendation of a former co-worker. Tremendous wealth of knowledge and source of encouragement here. Thank you!
Aye thanks a lot for this. I've applied the first day of November last month and I am just looking where I could start to study for the aptitude test. I got the gist of what certain sections are looking for, just have to see what samples to study
You're very welcome! It sounds like you probably watched my aptitude test video too which should give you some good guidance for your test. The Khan Academy sections that I mention in that video will really do a good job at preparing you for your test. Also, I would recommend reaching out to the training center/ union that they are applying for and see if they have a packet or anything with sample questions for people taking the aptitude test. My local had a small packet like this which was nice. Thanks for watching and I wish you the best of luck on your upcoming aptitude test ⚡️
Thanks a lot for that! I haven’t looked at that video just yet. But it’s ironic that the training center is holding practice sessions for it on Saturdays of this month, it’s about $300 a session. I’m still waiting for them to contact me to schedule an interview but now is definitely a good time to getting as much studying in as I can
I’m in North Carolina and only 14 so I’m thinking about my future. Being an electrician sounds good but my only concern is not being good enough at math for it I’m not sure how much mental work it requires.
Hey JJ! I just saw your other comment so I’m glad that you found the response helpful! But dang, I didn’t realize that you’re 14! Good for you for already thinking so far ahead about your future! You’ll make it far if you keep this mindset of planning and setting goals for your future. If you haven’t, I’d highly recommend to also start learning about investing (specifically starting a Roth IRA). You’ll be a millionaire easily by the time you retire if you start young. The power of compound interest is pretty amazing. Anyways, little rant there, but I always like to let younger people know about that because I wished that I started investing and learning about finances younger. Hope that helps! Super stoked for you and your future! ⚡️
@@MadElectrician I am trying to learn about investing and since my dad works at a finance company he's helping. Being a millionaire sounds a little crazy but fine by me lol. thanks for the encouragement!
Thank you for the video! I am a senior in high school right now in Columbus, OH and I'm stuck between learning to be an auto mechanic or electrician. This video helps me with that decision. I am now leaning towards electrician because it has all the things I am looking for in a career plus more. Either way it is good to know I have options. Thank you so much for this video!!!!
Really appreciate this content genuinely mean that . I’m 24 and still conflicted on what I really want to do but I’ve definitely been contemplating electrician work I just haven’t committed to anything yet . Been in the hospitality industry but don’t see myself doing that long term . Liked and saved this video for myself to fall back for reference if you don’t mind maybe sharing your email or anything like that if I have any more questions .
Right on! It’s really a fantastic career and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. If you happen to have an Instagram account that’s probably the best way to get in touch with me. I’m 25 and I can tell you that it’s really beneficial to get into the trade sooner than later because your pension will really benefit from it. I’m glad you found this helpful!
Thanks for the series man! I've started investing in the watching the rest of the channel. I am thinking about taking the next step in my career and jumping off the ambulance I've been with for the last 5 years and joining our local apprenticeship program. It's a scary leap from my current stability, but the scariest leaps are the most rewarding! You've got a new subscriber here.
#Jeremy sellers: I just made that leap, and let me tell you it’s a big one, but it’s definitely worth it. I would Save your pennies before hand to carry you through the first couple years. Good luck man.

Hey mad elect i'm from thailand. this is so good video but i have one question. Can the foreign go to work as an electrician ? and how ? thanks for your answer.
Hey, thanks! Are you thinking about moving to the USA to become an electrician or are you thinking about becoming an electrician there? In both cases, the answer is yes. If you wanted to work here then you would probably be required to live here in order to apply. I do know, however, that here we have some programs where electricians can go work abroad in other countries. Those electricians are originally from here though. I'm not sure if they have a program like that in Thailand. I would recommend trying to get in touch with one of the local unions here though if you are interested in working here. They should be able to answer any of the questions you have as far as working here goes. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching! ⚡️
@@MadElectrician Thanks for your answer. my plan is moving to USA to become an electrician like you said. so i find thai people that doing electrician job in usa but he say he want my linkedin profile but i dont have it ha ha. so first of all i will create my linkedin profile and make my profile be greate and i will tell him again. Thanks for your advice 😁😁
I'm currently awaiting the letter to take the aptitude test, and I just have a question about the benefits. Are electrical apprentices eligible to receive benefits? And if so, how long does it take for it to kick in? I'm asking because I have a family that has medical needs and I'm worried about there being a lapse in coverage.
Greatly helpful videos you put out. So as a union electrician you aren't allowed to do like private residency electrical works as a side gig or any other electrician side jobs? Any side hustle ideas for electricians when work is slow or there isn't overtime to keep you busy? I did a 'side hustle' search and it came up empty. Interested to hear if you have any yourself or any coworkers or non-union friends that have any. Would make for a good video I think. I read from someone talking about HVAC vs Wireman, go for wire because you can fairly easily become qualified to service HVAC if you are a journeyman and take a refrigerant class or a few classes.
Im in L.A. and considering becoming an electrician, My life is going nowhere really and have no desire going back to school. How could I go about getting started doing this? I'm currently 23 if that means anything. Thanks!
Hey man! Glad you reached out. First I think that becoming an electrician would be a great idea because of the fact that it’s a career and not just another job. It’s a goal that you’ll get to work towards and like I mentioned in the video it’s a really fun career. Plus it’s nice to have a job that’s contributing to society and not a job where you’re not talking people into spending money they don’t have to buy things that they don’t need. I would definitely check out my “How to Become and Electrician” playlist that’s on my channel. That has videos explaining every step in the applications process and clearly explains how to go about making it happen. I would look up the IBEW local in your area and find out exactly what it will take to get your application started. I think that you’ll be really happy about deciding to become an electrician, should you choose to pursue it. Definitely check out that playlist but also let me know if you have any more questions about anything. This channel is meant to be a resource so I’m happy to help in any way I can 👍🏼
Hey man thanks for the reply! I will definitely check out your playlist. I get that it's more of a career than a job and that's what I'm after at the moment. Looking for something to do long term more than short term. I'll check out my local IBEW and see what I can do from there. Thanks!
I’m 29, about to get married. Been working in various warehouses and delivery driver positions. Thinking about the electrical trade. Would I make enough to support a family? I feel like I need a career where there’s opportunities. There’s none in the warehouse industry.
Hey Lucas! Thanks for watching! This is definitely a career where you make wages that can support a family. Watch my "Why IBEW" video if you haven't seen it yet. I go into depth in that video explaining how great it is for a family. Starting in January our Local will be at $54.85/ hr just on the check alone. I'd highly recommend pursuing this career. Hope my insight can be useful!
Hey man. Just got my letter for my interview for my local IBEW in RI. Going to go through and watch your videos. I'm sure you say it one of your videos but how old were you when you became an apprentice? I'm 27 and I wish I tried to join sooner
Hey Ray! Right on! I think a lot of people feel that same way, wishing they got in a little sooner. I got in when I was 22 when I got in and I’m 26 now. 27 is still pretty young to start the trade. I think most of the apprentices who I have class with are actually in their 30’s, with only a few of us being in their 20’s. You’re ahead of most people I know who have gotten into the trade.
For reference, I am a senior in highschool possibly looking for alternatives to college, and a bit worried about it. do you choose from apprenticeship or trade school or both?
Hey man! Right on. Good things to be thinking about for sure. I would say that if you aren’t specifically interested in a career that requires some sort of four year degree that you should definitely consider the trades. It’s kind of a two for one deal. When you apply for the apprenticeship you are also applying for trade school. The on the job portion and schooling portion both make up the apprenticeship. I’ve never once regretted my decision to become an electrician and join the trades. It’s a fantastic career and it’s actually something that I enjoy doing. And the pay/ benefit package is pretty killer. Have you looked into the IBEW training center in your area to see what the the pay and everything is like there?
@@MadElectrician that's great advice man. I'm currently a senior and never really had anything in mind of what I wanted to do. But about a month ago I started looking into Electrician bc I don't want to go to college either. And I have no experience in the field but I want to something That I can work on with my hands and Just get stuff done and not sit in an office My question is: How dangerous is the job? And what's it like going to school for this program. I've seen Many people talk about it being dangerous and Touching hot tools. And getting shocked and that worries me alot
I have 0 experience on construction and i work at walmart. I am getting tired of the stress sometimes and the pay doesn't match. I wanna see if this is a better option so do you recommend for someone coming from walmart
Thank you for the video! I am thinking of becoming an electrician. I had one question about something you mentioned. You said you had the option of picking up side jobs if you were non-union vs union. Does the IBEW union prohibit side jobs for all levels of electrician?
No problem! Hopefully my channel can be a good resource for you if you choose to pursue this career. As far as I know that’s a general rule of any labor union. You can definitely double check but your IBEW local and see if it’s something that they willingly allow or what their take on it is, but I know for us here it’s definitely frowned upon. I will say though that with the great wages we have and the overtime opportunities that present themselves, it makes me feel content with not doing side work.
Its been like 5 yrs since I’ve been interested in the trade. I don’t know nothing about it never done any electrical work either. But I’m willing to learn. My 2 biggest questions are How would I know If I have the right skills and how would i know if I would actually would enjoy doing it n be a good fit for me? what’s your advice bro?
Hey Eduardo! Those are great questions. I would first say that I think anyone who was interested in this trade and is willing to put in the work can learn it. I knew absolutely nothing about construction/ the trades before I got into this trade myself. Even when I first started, I felt like everyone else had a good grasp of at least the basics (tools, material, etc) and I didn’t even know the difference between some common tools. With that being said, I would say that while having a good skill set going into this would be beneficial, I think that anyone can develops a great skill set over time. I feel like now I have a very good grasp of things and that I really know what I’m doing, but it just took slowly putting in the time to develop those skills to get here. As far as whether or your you would enjoy this, I would watch my video “20 Things I Love About Being an Electrician.” It’s similar to this video but I expand on and talk about other things more. I’ve met people who got into this trade and didn’t like it, but it seems like the majority of people who get in end up loving it. I personally would say that this is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I think it’s worth pursuing if you are interested in it.
Oh my God I hope I can become an electrician by this fall 🤧. You motivated me a little bit 🙏 I'm 17 and a little bit skinny! I hope that is not a problem, I'll try to exercise and learn my algebra again! Do you think you could make a video about the aptitude test? I'll check your channel to see if you did that video already or I'll check other channels about it. Nice video! and pls pray for me or wish me luck 🙏
Right on! Happy to hear that! It won’t be a problem. I was very skinny myself when I first joined, or at least I was and finally started filling out a little bit. I actually do have a video on the aptitude test and the rest of the entire application process. Check it out! Wishing you luck!
@@MadElectrician thanks! I'm checking it out and I'm very nervous already xD but I downloaded Khan academy already and thinking about buying the Ugly's book! Is the Ugly's book going to help me prepare for the test too or is it going to help me with my job overall?
Awesome! Khan academy is great for studying for your aptitude test. I actually don’t think you’ll need to learn anything from the Ugly’s book for your aptitude test. The test is going to be more just general math knowledge and reading. Nothing trade specific. That being said, the Ugly’s books are a great resource and really good stuff to start learning sooner than later since this is a trade that you are getting into.
I work a remote IT desk job making about 60k a year, super secure, great benefits, and good pay potential. Desk work is boring tho and I like working with my hands. The electrician career looks awesome, but I'm already 27. I'm not sure if its too late for me to pursue an electrician career or if the transition would make sense in my case. Quitting my current job to pull the trigger seems like a major risk.
Hey Rob! That’s a very valid list of concerns. First I would say that your age is definitely not an issue. I know plenty of apprentices who started in their 30’s and even some in their 40’s. I have heard of some who started in their 50’s. 27 is still on the younger side for sure. Have you looked up the wages in your area to see what the differences in pay would be? If you don’t mind me asking, what are do you live in? Overall I think this is a great and secure career. Some areas/ bigger cities have a lot more work happening so there wouldn’t be as much of a concern for layoffs or anything like that. I’m happy to help answer and follow up questions that you have. Keep in touch 👍🏼
@@MadElectrician I live in the San Diego area, which seems like it would take me 3-5 years of exp to make around what I currently make. Im not too sure tho
Gotcha. Yeah, you would just need to weigh your options and see if you think it would be worth it or not. My brother was in a similar situation where he was making $30ish an hour as a roofer. He just now finally is making more than he used to but it took a couple of years to get to this point. He’s really happy though because of how much less physically demanding and just generally better this trade is. Not to mention that he’ll eventually be making much more than he already is now plus better benefits/ pension.
@@MadElectrician Yea I seriously need to think about it. I have a feeling that electricians are going to be in huge demand in the coming years. How hard is finding work for journeymen Electricians?
hey Steven, I'm currently a commercial diver and looking to get out into a new career field. your videos have helped me understand electrician work and I believe this is the route I want to go. unfortunately I don't know which state to do it in. I live in Kentucky but plan on moving away soon. I looked up licence reciprocity and Arkansas (as well as a few other states) has a broader reciprocity with other states. I was wondering how that would work with selecting a state to get licenced in. I don't want to get a licence in one state and have to start an apprenticeship in another because of pay/cost of living/etc. any help would be much appreciated. thank you!
He's on Instagram as well, and I bet he'd get back to you quicker there. This channel seems to have grown so quickly that I bet he gets a dozen questions per day, per video. Good luck! I'm looking into the apprenticeship program, myself, and this channel has proven a critical resource for the preparatory work.
@@MadElectrician yeah greeting from Norway here 😄 I think the job it self is pretty alright, the only tough part is to get in with a good team. That kinda hard to make a good day without good people around 😬
That’s a really good question! From my understanding it kind of depends. I think you would need to find out what the electrical codes are in the country/ continent you are thinking of going to and also find out if they would allow a journeyman’s license from the US. The company I work for actually has a specific division that does international work. People who choose to do the international work get all of their travel and housing expenses paid for and usually end up working in US embassy’s over seas somewhere. It’s a pretty cool opportunity.
I’m really interested in becoming an electrician but don’t know what route I should take. Should I go do schooling or should I apply for an apprenticeship? I’m located in California
Hi Stephen, I'm Zack I'm nineteen years old from Michigan (I had graduated high school during the pandemic ) I remember the first time I first considered possibly becoming electrician when I was in middle School. Someone had mentioned to me there was a lot of math involved I guess that made me discouraged of myself. I have never been good at math. I do remember in one of your videos you did mention about algebra I did enjoy algebra when I was in high school. I would say I been slightly okay reading I do have a learning disability I am dyslexic. Recently I seen in the news article from the county I live in. The local community college is offering electrical apprenticeship level one training program starting in January. What is your opinion on going through community college for trades or what would be the difference from going all through ways?
Hey Stephen, I am a recent high school graduate and I am planning on applying to the apprenticeship program, but I wanted to know if I have to go work/learn year round for the 3-5 years or is there breaks like over summer, because I have family in Europe that I visit frequently.
What kind of electrician are you? From the pay it sounds like (to me) you might be a lineman? Just curious because I'm looking at becoming a residential electrician.
Hey man! According to my local union I’m technically an inside wireman, which is basically just a commercial electrician. The license covers residential, commercial/ industrial, and low voltage. I’m actually not a lineman, though I know linemen generally make really good money. From the research I’ve done I know that electricians here in Portland, Oregon and in Seattle, Washington make a good amount compared to some other states/ locals. Compared to the cost of living it may not be a huge difference though.
Going into my 3rd semester in college and I absolutely hate it. Never liked school to begin with but i come from a white collar upper middle class family so my mom made me promise her id at least give community college a chance. Im looking to drop out after this semester and debating between becoming an electrician or a plumber which trade do you think has more upside/is more worth the time you put into learning?
Hey man! Thanks for reaching out! College definitely isn’t for everyone and it’s unfortunate that it’s expected of so many people when the reality is that many who graduate rack up student debt and don’t even use their degrees. It’s also unfortunate that the trades are looked down upon by so many. I’m of course partial to electrical, but plumbing is a great way to go. My dad is a pipe-fitter with the union and he makes $47.44 hour. Currently electricians here make $47.85. You’ll notice that typically electricians and plumbers make similar money. The main different is that electrical you are working with electricity (scary to some and rightly so) and with the other you are working with water. I think generally being an electrician is looked at as more of a profession in the public eye. Both are fantastic careers though. I have to say though, I don’t think I’d want to be a plumber personally. Electricity interests me and being a plumber just doesn’t. Also, you may want to consider taking a class on electrical theory before you drop out because it can really increase your chances of getting in. You can even try to apply for your local IBEW while you are going to school. Just something to consider. Also keep in mind that with the apprenticeship you will be going to trade school (similar to college but the information is much more relevant to your work). Hope that helps! Reach out with more questions as you have them!
Mad Electrician Mad Electrician thank you so much for the help. I will definitely look into adding electrical theory into my current schedule or take it as a winter semester course and apply to my local IBEW.
Right on man! Keep in touch. I’d love to be a resource for you as you take more steps towards becoming an apprentice. Guidance is something that I really wished I had when I went through this process. My other videos should help you out quite a bit too throughout the whole application process. 👍🏼⚡️
Great video man, thank you for taking the time to make this. Are tattoos strict in the electrician work environment? I want to be able to get hand tattoos and possibly a neck tattoo. They’d be professionally done and wouldn’t be graphic or vulgar. I’ve heard it depends on who my employer is but I’d like to hear your opinion. Also if any other electricians are reading this please tell me what you think.
I honestly want to become an electrician, but as of now I am in limbo. I currently attend a trade school but Because of covid, I am unable to attend classes in person since I live in L.A and I'm not sure if I should finish trade school or go to straight to apprentice ship. I decided to apply for apprentice ship at IBEW local 11, but they aren't accepting applications nor interviews so I really don't know what to do. Any advice?
So your trade school is separate from the apprenticeship? My advice, if I’m understanding this correctly, would be to continue with the trade school with the intentions of applying for Local 11 once they start accepting applications. Any schooling that’s trade/ electrical related will significantly increased your chances of getting into the apprenticeship because it will make you a more valuable apprentice. I know it seems like this Covid stuff is forever, but it will pass and life will eventually go back to “normal”. Whatever normal is. So I would just see this time as time to prepare to apply and to make yourself the best possible applicant for the apprenticeship program. You’ll be really glad that you joined once you finally can and I think the wait will have been worth it. Hope that helps! If you have any more questions then I’m your guy 👍🏼⚡️
Hey, you might find this video helpful too: ua-cam.com/video/IakF4Hsd6NI/v-deo.html In this I talk about basically what I told you. Using this time to make yourself a good applicant for the apprenticeship.
I'm a 33 YO Janitor with intentions of starting a new career in something exciting. Tomorrow I'm having a meeting with someone from a trade school about their electrical program. I know about the apprenticeship programs, but I think I will go ahead with the trade school. Is it ever to late to become a successful electrician?
I'm a 42 year old female and wanted to become an electrician in 2002 and then in 2008. How hard is it for a female to get accepted into the apprenticeship?
Hey Stephen great videos dude! Currently moving to Portland within the next few weeks and applying to Local 48 for an apprenticeship. Im a 29 year old military veteran with a Bachelors degree. Is my age going to be a problem for me to get hired? Im very much relying on this as my future career as me and my wife want to start a family soon.
Wow man, so cool! Thank you for your service! Local 48 is a fantastic local and our training center is known as being one of the best in the nation. Your age wouldn’t be a disadvantage to you in any way. Believe it or not 29 is actually still on the younger side for people who apply for the apprenticeship. I honestly wouldn’t worry about that at all. What I will say though is that since you are a veteran you already have a huge advantage over most people who apply. The IBEW has a huge amount of respect for our veterans and because of that you are very likely to make it in based on that fact alone. I don’t want to say for sure, but I remember hearing something about veterans being moved to the front of the list when they apply, meaning you should get in very quickly after you apply, take your aptitude test, and interview. Don’t hold me to that for sure but I’m pretty sure we do something like that. Anyways, so cool man. Maybe we’ll end up going to school together or even working together some day ⚡️
They definitely try to keep apprentices working throughout their apprenticeship. I would also say that when you are a journeyman there is more of a chance of getting laid off than when you were an apprentice; however, it’s almost fully depended on your performance as how valuable you are to your company. I’ve worked with guys who have never been laid off and have worked full careers in the trade. Time can get rough and unpredictable things happen, but for the most part if you are a good journeyman and you put in the effort every day to do a great job then you won’t be seeing a lay-off.
Hello, I'm currently a junior in high school (a female) and I'm really interested in this career. I'm pretty sure I could find it enjoyable, however, is this time consuming? I'm an artist and I would love to come home after work and draw, but I'm not sure if it's possible? Also, thank you for your amazing content!
Hey Adalgissa! I think that’s it’s such a cool thing when we have women join the trade. It’s pretty much a normal thing at this point. The women that I’ve worked along side and also had school with are fantastic and really enjoy this as a career. It’s definitely something where you can work during the morning/ day and then come home and have time to draw or whatever else you want to do. I leave for work at 5ish and get home around 3ish these days. Granted, I work about 45 minutes away from home with traffic. Definitely pursue this if you think you’ll enjoy it. Also, the IBEW really encouraged women to join, so much so that you might even have increased chances of getting in for that fact alone which is awesome. It’s my pleasure! Thanks for watching my videos! Reach out anytime for any questions and I’ll be happy to get back to you 👍🏼⚡️
I know in the last few years Local 48 actually set record breaking numbers for hiring on new apprentices. Things are definitely slower right now though during all of this Covid stuff. I’ll get in touch with the training center and see what I can find out for you 👍🏼
Sorry for the delayed response, Ricardo. I got in touch with the training center and got all of the details. So each time that the training center accepts applications, they typically have around 1k people apply. That means 1k people are going in and out of the training center during that time. With all of the safety concerns right now they aren’t accepting applications, having people come in for aptitude tests, or conducting interviews. Especially with the building basically already maxed out (in compliance with CDC regulations) with current apprentices who go to school during the week. With that being said, they are still moving down the list and bringing on new apprentices who have already gone through the whole application process. The hopes are that sometime next year when things simmer down, they will return to business as usual and re-open applications. Hopefully that helps. I know it’s frustrating if you haven’t had a chance to apply, test, and interview yet. This whole thing made things messy for a lot of people.
Steve. How much would U pay in tax? This is phenomenal money. I'm in a different but of rock on another part of the planet and doing the same job. We are doing the exact same job and U make five times my annual salary. Good luck to all of u sparks in Portland. Each country unique practices and rules and materials.
@@MadElectrician for sure. Thanks for the vids. I'm a physical therapy assistant looking to transition into being an electrician and your info is very helpful.
Sup bro. I have a question on the ibew maybe you help since there isn't alot of information on the subject. At my local (Los Angeles) there is a program called Intelligent Transportation Systems. The inside wireman is not accepting applications but the (ITS) is. Have you heard of this program before? If so what do you think of it? Is it worth while since I don't know if its constant work or not.
Hey PaintThinnerGang! That sounds like some sort of low voltage program. I’ll ask one of the low voltage guys that is in the same job as me today if he knows anything about it and I’ll get back to you 👍🏼
So far I haven’t been able to find anything out. If I do I’ll let you know though. I would probably try calling the training center/ local and seeing what they can tell you about the program. My honest advice though without even looking into it would probably be to still try to apply for the inside wireman program once they start accepting applications. I just know so many people who have gone through the low voltage program and wished that they did the full inside wireman program. You can always go back to school and sometimes switch programs halfway through, but it’s not an ideal situation and often times that will require a reinterview for the inside wireman program. Either way, I would still try to get a hold of your local and see what they can tell you about the program.
@@MadElectrician i think I'll keep studying for a while to do the inside wireman program. I talked to the local but no help just vague answers. I was able to get in contact a member in that field but he said to wait since the ITS program is something alot of people end up regretting
I just need help i hear all these horror stories about getting in as union electrican. I would like to talk to someone about it. Im not the greatest at math but i have been studying my tail end off and progressively getting better for practice aptitude tests. Can anybody help me?
Really? I’m curious about what kind of stories you have heard. My honest opinion of unions is that they are really great, and that’s all based off of personal experience. I truly feel like I’ve been given such an incredible opportunity with the IBEW and find it hard to believe sometimes that I get the quality education that I do, incredible pay/ benefits, etc. I will be making videos talking about the union eventually that I think a lot of people will find very helpful. As far as preparing for your aptitude test, definitely check out my aptitude test video if you haven’t yet. The Khan academy app that I mention in the video is an absolute life saver. You don’t have to be amazing at math, just good enough to pass the test. Math is definitely something that you use frequently in this trade, but it’s not overly complicated and often times you’ll be using the same formulas for calculations.
I think a lot of jobs get to a point where you’ve pretty much learned all that there is to learn. I think most retail jobs would be that way for starters. With electrical work, it’s so multifaceted that I don’t think any one electrician could learn how to do everything. You could spend a whole career doing either motor controls, plc’s, fire alarm, low voltage, high voltage, residential, commercial, industrial, etc. Most guys end up learning a little bit of everything, but each category of work is so expansive that there are always new things to learn. In my opinion it keeps the job exciting and for that reason it never really gets boring to me.
I guess there are different kinds of people. I absolutely love being an electrician but it isn’t for everyone. In my case, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Universities are a great way to go too if you want a career in a field that requires a degree.
I was going to a community college to be an electrician and I wish I wouldn’t of quit yes I know I can always go back but it hard to go back I got a uncle that was and electrician a cousin that is one and two of his brother are an electrician. I work at a grocery store I mean it’s okay but they don’t want to pay you but can spend money on bull crap. I’m now trying to figure what I want to do I’m ready for a career not a job and I want to do a trade
If this is something that you’re really interested then I’d really encourage you to get back at it. Like I said in my video, this is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. I was in retail for about six years before I started the trade and I’m so thankful to be out of it. Depending on where you live, if you go the union route then you may be able to do the schooling/ apprenticeship for free. Here in Local 48 everything is completely free. They even give you a really nice complete set of tools for free which is crazy.
Mad Electrician I know I want to learn a trade but at the same time I want to travel.. I was going to school to be a barber it was okay but I can’t see it
Being an electrician can actually allow you to travel if that’s something that you want to do. I know some guys that will take a couple of months or so off in between jobs and go travel somewhere. It’s definitely different than retail because there are no actual shifts to fill, which usually allows for more flexibility. Of course this all depends where and who you work for though.
I just recently started wanting to become an Electrician right after I get out of highschool (senior at 17 years old right now) and these videos have made me want to achieve that goal even more. I want to thank you for pushing me to want to take part in this career.
Lift weights. Stay out of the bars. Invest your money in real estate. When you’re 40 you’ll have you’re whole life in front of you.
Get ahold of your local IBEW that may have programs you can already start on.
One of the best decisions I made while back. I was married at that time when I joined Electrical Apprenticeship. No debt, school was paid for. Definitely would
Recommend this trade for someone who doesn’t want to go to school full time. Great money and room to grow if you want to be a foreman or JF.
I interviewed for my local last week, I just got a letter in the mail today stating that they ranked me 6th on the two year list. I felt like the interview went great. Hopefully they pull my card soon!

Great video. What advice would you give women who are interested in becoming an electrician?

And I have no experience in the field but I want to something That I can work on with my hands and Just get stuff done and not sit in an office
My question is: How dangerous is the job?
I work for I.B.E.W. local 24 in Baltimore, Maryland. I love our trade bro. I even recently started my own channel. Great content man!🤙🏿
Hey William! Right on! It’s such a cool trade. I love how multifaceted it is.
I’ll definitely check out your channel! ⚡️
@@MadElectrician appreciate it!🙏💯 iits new, so it'll get better over time.
Hey, I’m 14 and in high school and I’m wanting to become and electrician, so what’s better then learning from a young age
@@MadElectrician Oh my gosh thanks a lot sir. All of this, thanks for all the information you've given us! God bless you 🙏💯
I work a remote IT desk job making about 60k a year, super secure, great benefits, and good pay potential.
Any tips for high school?
hey Steven, I'm currently a commercial diver and looking to get out into a new career field. your videos have helped me understand electrician work and I believe this is the route I want to go. unfortunately I don't know which state to do it in.

Question can an American journeyman go to Europe to continue there electrical career?
Go get schooling and meanwhile apply to the apprenticeship.
It’s a grown up job. Maybe 4 weeks paid vacation a year depending how long you’ve been with company.
Compared to the cost of living it may not be a huge difference though.
ty

In this I talk about basically what I told you. Using this time to make yourself a good applicant for the apprenticeship.
Can I apply with your union if I live in Nebraska? Like…if I’d be willing to move?
Where do I sign up?
Also what is IBEW local 48
I'm a 33 YO Janitor with intentions of starting a new career in something exciting. Tomorrow I'm having a meeting with someone from a trade school about their electrical program. I know about the apprenticeship programs, but I think I will go ahead with the trade school. Is it ever to late to become a successful electrician?
Nope. I’m a 32 year old veteran who is about to be done with his electrical program in October.
Update ?
Maybe we’ll end up going to school together or even working together some day ⚡️
@@MadElectrician No doubt, and thanks for taking the time. Ill yell out to you if I ever see you around.
Anytime man.
Haha! Do it 😂
Background really said: 🛩🛬✈️
I’ve heard once you’re a journeyman work becomes scarce you get laid off more often than when you were an apprentice

Hey im 15 and i wondered if i should go in to this what subjects do you need to become a electrician? Please help

Local 48 is damn near never accepting applications. How do I get into the apprenticeship?
Are there any electrician related jobs that I can get with a 2 year degree? Are there any 2 year degrees that make me more valuable to an employer?
Steve. How much would U pay in tax?
This is phenomenal money. I'm in a different but of rock on another part of the planet and doing the same job. We are doing the exact same job and U make five times my annual salary. Good luck to all of u sparks in Portland. Each country unique practices and rules and materials.

I’ll ask one of the low voltage guys that is in the same job as me today if he knows anything about it and I’ll get back to you 👍🏼
@@MadElectrician Thank you. I appreciate it and yes I think it is low voltage.
That sounds frustrating 😕
Yeah, that’s kind of what my thinking is. It will probably be worth it to wait for the full inside program.

Math is definitely something that you use frequently in this trade, but it’s not overly complicated and often times you’ll be using the same formulas for calculations.
name a career that you stop learning?
I think a lot of jobs get to a point where you’ve pretty much learned all that there is to learn. I think most retail jobs would be that way for starters.
With electrical work, it’s so multifaceted that I don’t think any one electrician could learn how to do everything. You could spend a whole career doing either motor controls, plc’s, fire alarm, low voltage, high voltage, residential, commercial, industrial, etc. Most guys end up learning a little bit of everything, but each category of work is so expansive that there are always new things to learn. In my opinion it keeps the job exciting and for that reason it never really gets boring to me.
done construction work before and it sucks big time. you cant compare trades to university. totallly diferent .
I guess there are different kinds of people. I absolutely love being an electrician but it isn’t for everyone. In my case, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Universities are a great way to go too if you want a career in a field that requires a degree.
Is 33 too old to transition to this career?
Mad Electrician I’ve been with Foodlion and at the same store just a little over 6 years ... my cousin I think he is with a union
Mad Electrician so those guys you talking about that’s time off between jobs are they union or non union
the thing is you got be smart to be a doctor , engieer.
This is true.
Just because you don't have a uni degree doesn't mean you aren't as well educated as someone with one.
Definitely!
I talk a lot more about that in my “College vs The Trades” video 👍🏼
