The script is bullet proof. What makes this movie work is that the characters are actually speaking their lines as if they were prose from a novel. People don’t actually talk like this. If you keep this perspective in mind, then the characters disappear and become total satire. Besides, when the spoken word is conveyed as if it were the written word, it just allows the dry humor to skyrocket into the next realm. ❤
hip-deep in philosophical analysis of the societal values of dogs in a kids cartoon movie. Of course we all know that they're just using the cartoon movie analysis as a way of wooing each other and showing off their egos.
It’s a satirical view of how stupid an Ivy League education makes you. I know because I had that education too. It’s hysterically funny because they take themselves so effing seriously.
The exchanges of eye contact and slight but unmistakable facial reactions between Josh and Alice in this scene is some of the sexiest low-key flirting I can remember (0:28, 1:19, 1:36), capped off by that gorgeous hint of a smile followed by eyes cast downward at 2:18. While Whit Stillman's writing is the more lauded half of his writer/director career, the intercutting in this scene (in collaboration with his editor) really shows off his skills behind the camera.
Everyone gets that Tramp is Des in Josh's formulation, but I think Lady is a synthesis of Charlotte and Alice. The part about Lady being great-looking but empty-headed is aimed at Charlotte. When he starts talking about nice girls from sheltered homes falling for the wrong type, he's warning Alice, whom he's in love with. Josh and Alice are the two nicest people in the movie.
One of the greatest films made by an American director. By one of the greatest American directors/writers. There is so much Jane Austen in Whit Stillman.
@@daveyboy_ No it doesn't. My older sister was in this kind of social circle in NYC at the same time. I went out with her sometimes, and this is how they acted. I suppose you could do better?
I just saw this movie for the first time. It was a 20th anniversary screening and I sat right behind Mr. Stilman. He added Bambi and Lady references to this movie partly because his little daughter was watching Disney classics while he was writing the screenplay. But this scene has to strike a lot of people as a more clever reply to Tarantino's opening to Reservoir Dogs. One can humorously critique Like a Virgin. But Stilman runs circles around Lady and the Tramp.
That's kind of Whit Stillman's style. He shows you all of his character's obnoxious flaws and just when you think you would like to kill them, he reveals they're more lovable aspects too.
Why was Des annoyed? It's what makes it so funny to me, he's a womanizer and he's attracted to Alice (Chloe) so he is either trying to prove to himself that he can change or prove to her that he can settle down. Of course he's fooling himself as he isn't faithful to any woman throughout the movie and has a silly cover story to get out of jams. He also knows that Josh is attracted to Alice so he's in competition with him though at this point in the movie neither has made a move.
Well the new generations don't care gor this type of dialogue, only want to be seen at the new hip place so they can take a lot of pics and let their social media followers know how wonderful their life is

@yoenace it was the very early 80's, for not mention late 70's, and it was bassed on studio 54, and if you could research in photographs, high class fashion was more sophisticated.
I'm not saying I wouldn't hang out with them. If I had money and rich parents and a nice job, I would probably have to. I'm just saying I would have a nervous breakdown. Its a little different.
Jock is a Scottish terrier, he says, "The only admirable character is the little Scotty..." It's not a reference to name but to the type of dog Jock is.
ha ha nice. You may be very well right, but tacky and depressing people are human too. I tend to relate with the garage trash and punk rock crowd, and they're just as opinionated as more privileged folks. You do realize the contradiction of disagreeing to hang out with snotty disagreeable people. Isn't the condescending attitude going both ways, right? On that note, I doubt I'd hang out with any of these people either.
Okay, gotcha. Of course you wouldn't have to do anything you didn't want to. I wouldn't be morally opposed to hanging out with them either, but our tastes in music and most likely movies too would certainly not cause me to gravitate me towards them either. later dude.
No. He got mad over a bullshit dehumanized slandering of the potential of humanity that can be attributed to the nut's depression. It's fucking bullshit and I can totally understand how anyone could get offended by that.

2:21 for anyone who wants to rewatch it

Kate Beckinsale's American accent is one of the best ever by a British actress. Way more authentic than, say, Kate Winslet's in Titanic.
Sorry, but you are out of your mind. She acts several scenes in this movie with a full British accent. It's godawful.
I think most actors can do a pretty good 'other side of the pond' dialect. Except for Dick Van Dyke, Kevin Costner, Ben Kingsley and Liam Neeson.

Sort of interesting that a few years after the film takes place, 1986, Lady and the Tramp would be rereleased to theaters.
