Would you please do a video on when you two transitioned from the Weaver stance to the Isoceles stance? I am still using the Weaver stance for handguns. Thinking of switching over. Thnx.
Weaver stance exposes your unprotected side if you are wearing plate, isosceles puts the armor facing the threat. There are other reasons but this is the basic one.
Isoseceles allows you to naturally aim without even using your sights because your centerline will aim at whatever you point your torso to. So, when you bring your gun up, it's ready.
I once trained with Larry Vickers several years ago when he first got out of the military at the Burro Canyon range and he made me shoot isoceles without telling me why. I understand what you are saying about a plate, but how often do we wear a vest and plate? I only have a vest because I witnessed two N.D.s. And I've only used it 2x when training.

We ran all 2 point in the mid to late 80's in USMC infantry. The sling you showed that made all the noise. I believe it's called a 'parade sling' now, for good reason. Not tactical in today's world. I like the BFG Vickers sling. Both single & double.. Interesting take on mud, debris, etc. getting in the QD mount, hadn't thought about that, but then, haven't been face-down in the mud for awhile, either.. Great vid as always, fellas. I've heard that the SAS method of pressing out against their sling with an MP-5 was because while wearing their gas masks, they couldn't get a good cheak weld and proper sight alignment. An example of gear dictating tactics.
They also have pretty good qd's, but sometimes they will eventually pop out of other brand qd stocks after some wear on both parts... Coch definitely has a good point about them being a possible failure point, I've had several other brands of QD swivels/sockets that were aluminum and wore out, out of spec and would occasionally pop out with certain brands, some where a ball or spring failed causing it to work loose overtime... Atleast with magpul you can get stocks, receiver plates, and forend mounts built around all the exact same specs... Like many other AR components there is certainly a range of dimensions used by different manufacturers in the QD socket/swivel market apparently... 👍
Lived the walk through it brought back memories. I learned about daisy chaining 550 cord to attach to rifle from a SF Sgt when I got to the rivers in Nam as a Mine Force Diver😎 But primary weapon was a knife strapped to a leg, lol. Thanks Again guys.
Hilarious how obsessed people are with SEAL teams. There are so many special forces in every branch and it’s always about the seals. Off the top of my head I can think of 2 in the Air Force that are better trained and competent then the SEALS. TACP and Pararescue. But I guess if seals keep making movies and writing books the public will be enamored with them
I totally agree on the quick detach style slings. Mud, sand and dirt prevents it from attaching. Furthermore, they rust. Those things always need to be well maintained with a good cleaning and oiling. I'm surprised you guys don't mention Magpul hooks. They're strong, quiet, solid, don't move around in the attachment area much providing for a strong base and support for when you need your sling as a weapon support base when firing. I've only had one issue with the attachment getting stuck in 10 years. Hammered and oiled it and it's still good to this day.
I had a mamba wolf hook (was just a mamba sling but broken into 2 parts) and carabiner to my vest. After a house bomb in 2008 Iraq my m4 was bent but rifle was still attached to my vest 😂
I've tried quite a few slings over the years. . I started using WPS QD SLING and I freaking love it . I love not having any adjustments . I didnt think I would like the Bungy system just I love it . I can do anything I need to do without having to swim out . Vtac and Proctor Sling is what I used for the longest time . Vickers 222 and D3 I used for couple years . The sad thing about the noisy sling during Vietnam is that it's the same design as we were using on the M1 Garand in WWII, and even back then people knew it was inadequate. Patton mentioned in his wartime journal that the sling was too complicated and wasn't usable for most situations. He said he almost never saw anyone actually using it.
In Somalia I used a 2qt sling on my A2 cause while searching vehicles I needed to swing my rifle away to use both hands. Took my 60 gunners 9mm with me so I had something quick to grab if needed. Duct tape,550 cord can make anything work. Somewhat.
Been using the same Vickers Blue Force Gear 2 point adjustable since 2018. My favorite out of all the slings I've ever used (USMC issued 2 point M1 sling, 2 point A2 sling, Single point open hook, 3 point, single point aftermarket covered hook, single point aftermarket covered hook bungee).

Coch looks like he's barely 18 shaved like that. It's so easy to take for granted the long history of trial and error behind slings to get to the point where we have good cheap 2 point adjustable slings. I think I have a half dozen vickers laying around.
I started running Magpul MS1s with H&K hooks, it has a "fast buckle" like the Blue Force tactical, I added my own tab to it so it looks like everyone else but it's solid gear for about $20 cheaper than the BF. Paying for what's good when there's nothing else close is one thing but if you look today and use your smarts and what works for you, not what others say works for you, you'll find what you need.
Ive come to the point of realizing that single, dual, & 3 point slings on QD attachments have been what works best for me. This means shelling out a little more money for slings and since i dont want crap its not particularly cheap. Although some of these slings can be switched between weapons i atill prefer every long gun have its own slings. There is one weapon i have that jist doesnt work at all with a 2 point sling. The HK SP5. I also have a CZ Scorpion which is of a similar size and it also doesnt work well with what is considered these days as the only sling to use unless youre an idiot. Often the single point is given some acceptance when it comes to these types of weapons. For good reason, they work great. Until youre no longer holding it. With the short barrels you do pretty much avoid the muzzle smacking into things that cause instant pain that cant be ignored. Thats where the 3 point sling has been good to have. It doesnt interfere with controls on either weapon. The Scorpion i havr is the 3 plus where the bolt release is where the mag release was on the previous version and works like a BAD Lever on a AR. The 3 point on a AR is kind of an obstacle to hitting the bolt release and getting at the charging handle. I found the 2 point to single point convertible sling to be best for that weapon. Now to shotguns. I have had a Remington 870, Mossberg 590, Benelli M1 Super 90, and currently have a Benelli Nova for combat shotguns. These guns all have different weights with large differences and for the most part work the same when it comes to reloading them. This is one weapon where I have found the single point sling to be pretty useless. The weapons with 18" or 20" barrels are just too long for them and the all steel 870 being way too heavy to the point of the sling feeling like it is there only to cause discomfort. Not providing comfort is one thing but that is another and it sucks. The 2 point on them i think is best on the semi auto shotguns. For some reason it tends to get in the way of running forend more than the 3 point sling does. But in my handgun experience i have found that having multiple holsters for each weapon i plan to carry has been more a blessing than the box of shame that it is usually considerd to be. Since slings are often, correctly, looked at like holsters for pistols, then maybe multiple slings is the way to go instead of considering them era specific and no longer useful once that era is over.
Aussies didn’t sling in Vietnam. As we used the FN-FAL, (SLR), it was impractical. Even the forward scouts that had M16’s didn’t use slings. It’s now an integral part of the new age warfare with new age weapons.
Aw man! There I was carrying an A1 or A2 on my back in the 80's and 90's and I never thought to DIY a better sling... I guess that's because I was always driving a truck... LOL
I love these "history of" format videos guys, thanks for the great content. I'm a former MP5 instructor who's exactly Coch's age, and to this day I prefer a three-point like HK's R3 sling even on modern M4s. It can be carried on your front muzzle down almost exactly like a one-point, except way tighter to the body. Thanks to the slider, it can also be rotated (without removing or readjusting) on your front muzzle up, but close to the chest to keep it off your knees. From both of which you can shoulder instantly. And from that muzzle-up position it can be spun around like a rock guitar and carried on your back, muzzle down. Or you can even put a little slack in it and use the two sling halves like straps of a backpack, and carry it SUPER secure on your back, muzzle down. And yes, contrary to common belief you still can shoot week-side with these (although the sling admittedly becomes a bit of a cluster-F doing it -- which is exactly why one-points like Dennis Chalker's were invented back in the day). Oh, and as an aside, I'm sure he knows this but Dorr didn't mention that the main clip point for fixing the sling slider isn't on the sling (that was an afterthought). That's what the clip on the left side of an MP5's mag well is for. Damn thing's been around since '64 and it's amazing how many people still don't know that, LOL.
Totally different occupation, same environment. Anything that can,will snag, break, stick or freeze up. KISS has proven over time to be effective and reliable.
They for got to mention that the Vietnam 2 point sling was used for basic marksmanship. You rapped the back loop through your shooting arm bicep and a more stable shooting platform. Definitely not a combat sling.
Pressing out against the sling is even more relevant this month (June 2023). If you choose to remove the brace from your pistol, pressing out against the sling allows a good sight picture with recoil mitigation.

We weee spie rigging , the Marine abov me had a M60 and the sling keeper broke , had it hit me a nd watched it fly past me! So a good sling is important and the ones we had were garbage!
The way i had always seen the 1pt sling worn, was with a bungie style, put your left arm through the loop, then pass the whole sling aroun the back of the neck, and over the front of your right shoulder. It lets the rifle hang between your arm and side, and seemed to work when we were out on patrol. Also keeps you from racking your nuts on sidearm transition.
The rubber band thing is a fine solution but with all the seamstress work you boys did on your kit, nobody did double loop Velcro? Does anyone do that now? Seems like it would be a natural next step.

It’s just the angle of the camera. When he was demonstrating the MP5 it looked like his muzzle might be too far to the left but as soon as they changed the camera angle you could tell that his muzzle was down range. I’m not military but from what I understand Dorr would’ve never made past boot camp let alone a whole career in NSW if he didn’t know how to keep his muzzle pointed in a safe direction
Hay being in the older half on here! In the sand box we had at the start. A adapter that held an extra mag. Right next to the mag well. The one I had was aluminum. Anyone remember the name ?
LOL. Went through every sling ever. Back to the good n' simple 2-point any 1" nylon webbing will do. Lately, adopted the old M-60 sling for the heavier guns in the arsenal. Still hate em' though. As a security contractor, it was just slinging around a gun. Litteraly. So slings required. Never use them ever, anywhere else but training.
Slings are like calculus. Complicated and confusing but brilliant when it works. Them damn three points snagged everything...I just put a Vickers sling on everything.
As a rigger, I made so much gear… from slings to H- gear to dive gear. SEALS our us (supply) didn’t help much because they were restricted to mil-stock.
I saw that polymer lower! 🧐 But I'm a big fan of the KP-15 design, so I'm no hater! There was definitely a good reason Colt wanted to make these in the late 60's/early 70's but the polymer industry just wasn't quite there, Personally I think the KP-15 is pretty freakin awesome, especially compared to the earlier attempts at a lightweight monolithic polymer lower 🤙

When it comes to slings for the AR 15 Edgar Shermans sling is nice. I do not use the QD clips instead I use paracord tripled over on both ends. If the sling is going to fail at that point its going to fail. For my AR 10 since it is heavier I use a similar sling but its padded which is beneficial for shoulder and back fatigue.
Love your videos! Boys back in the Nam days even wrapped and taped their olive towels round their slings. Especially M60 gunners. They used to improvise everything. Nearly every grunt, partly even in line infantry units (mostly draftees) used tape for their slings pretty quick. SOF units like LRRPs used for their XMs just two strings of paracord. Really interesting how everything changed since then. Anyways: Keep up the great work! Cheers from Germany!
I really like the Blue Force Vickers Combat application sling. I have the padded version two point with the pull tab to loosen or tighten it. It is a good piece of gear and makes it more comfortable to carry. I don't have it set up with a QD i just put a loop of Paracord on my rail and attached the sling to it like that. I like seeing videos like this of you kind of showing the evolution of equipment throughout your time.
Been working slings my whole life, run what works for you and is comfortable to you. Durability and simplicity is key. Great job thanks for your information and experience.
i wish I could put bfg on everything but for range stuff or things I dont use much I get STI 2 point slings. theyve held up really well, have the adjustable tab, strong and a lot better than the entry slings from most other companies, only 25 dollars as well.
nobody tried any quick adjust two points back in the day? One could buckle a silent parade sling to an alice pack lower strap for a homemade vtac sling, no sewing needed.
Thank for the variety of options and the history. I know nothing about this. Building my first rifle. Takes time. Learning what things are and the purpose now.
Have yall tried the McLean Sling? its rapid adjust 2pt to 1pt. I use it on my AR Pistol and Love it. done a few basic rucks with it, but no real torture test yet. I believe it was designed by a Seal as well
Great video and appreciate info fr legit sources. Picked up a couple slings from Snakeater tactical and customized them a bit. Super impressed with their quality, simplicity, and are reasonably priced. Did add a couple things GBRS suggested
Rubberized carabiner or hard plastic carabiners aka climber hooks would help in noise issue on slings . Climber carabiners are made from the lightest and tensile metals should carry a gun nicely .

For the SAS-method, it's important to note they did that in part because they were wearing respirators and couldn't get a sight picture with the stock

I still have my single point bungie sling as a backup but love the Vickers adjustable sling. Worth every penny.

German Military got a modern 3-Point Sling from H&K and I like it a lot. The quick release helps to transition into a 1-Point style really fast.

Or you can even put a little slack in it and use the two sling halves like straps of a backpack, and carry it SUPER secure on your back, muzzle down. And yes, contrary to common belief you still can shoot week-side with these (although the sling admittedly becomes a bit of a cluster-F doing it -- which is exactly why one-points like Dennis Chalker's were invented back in the day). Oh, and as an aside, I'm sure he knows this but Dorr didn't mention that the main clip point for fixing the sling slider isn't on the sling (that was an afterthought). That's what the clip on the left side of an MP5's mag well is for. Damn thing's been around since '64 and it's amazing how many people still don't know that, LOL.
Have tried tons of slings. I currently run a Blue Force Gear Vickers sling and its perfect. Get one - dont look back.
Totally different occupation, same environment. Anything that can,will snag, break, stick or freeze up. KISS has proven over time to be effective and reliable.

They for got to mention that the Vietnam 2 point sling was used for basic marksmanship. You rapped the back loop through your shooting arm bicep and a more stable shooting platform. Definitely not a combat sling.

Pressing out against the sling is even more relevant this month (June 2023). If you choose to remove the brace from your pistol, pressing out against the sling allows a good sight picture with recoil mitigation.

I 100% agree on running hooks instead of QD anywhere dirt may be an issue. Simple and reliable is better.

We weee spie rigging , the Marine abov me had a M60 and the sling keeper broke , had it hit me a nd watched it fly past me! So a good sling is important and the ones we had were garbage!
The way i had always seen the 1pt sling worn, was with a bungie style, put your left arm through the loop, then pass the whole sling aroun the back of the neck, and over the front of your right shoulder. It lets the rifle hang between your arm and side, and seemed to work when we were out on patrol. Also keeps you from racking your nuts on sidearm transition.
The rubber band thing is a fine solution but with all the seamstress work you boys did on your kit, nobody did double loop Velcro? Does anyone do that now? Seems like it would be a natural next step.

It’s just the angle of the camera. When he was demonstrating the MP5 it looked like his muzzle might be too far to the left but as soon as they changed the camera angle you could tell that his muzzle was down range. I’m not military but from what I understand Dorr would’ve never made past boot camp let alone a whole career in NSW if he didn’t know how to keep his muzzle pointed in a safe direction
Hay being in the older half on here! In the sand box we had at the start. A adapter that held an extra mag. Right next to the mag well. The one I had was aluminum. Anyone remember the name ?

LOL. Went through every sling ever. Back to the good n' simple 2-point any 1" nylon webbing will do. Lately, adopted the old M-60 sling for the heavier guns in the arsenal. Still hate em' though. As a security contractor, it was just slinging around a gun. Litteraly. So slings required. Never use them ever, anywhere else but training.
Slings are like calculus. Complicated and confusing but brilliant when it works. Them damn three points snagged everything...I just put a Vickers sling on everything.
As a rigger, I made so much gear… from slings to H- gear to dive gear.
SEALS our us (supply) didn’t help much because they were restricted to mil-stock.

I saw that polymer lower! 🧐 But I'm a big fan of the KP-15 design, so I'm no hater! There was definitely a good reason Colt wanted to make these in the late 60's/early 70's but the polymer industry just wasn't quite there, Personally I think the KP-15 is pretty freakin awesome, especially compared to the earlier attempts at a lightweight monolithic polymer lower 🤙

When it comes to slings for the AR 15 Edgar Shermans sling is nice. I do not use the QD clips instead I use paracord tripled over on both ends. If the sling is going to fail at that point its going to fail. For my AR 10 since it is heavier I use a similar sling but its padded which is beneficial for shoulder and back fatigue.
Love your videos! Boys back in the Nam days even wrapped and taped their olive towels round their slings. Especially M60 gunners. They used to improvise everything. Nearly every grunt, partly even in line infantry units (mostly draftees) used tape for their slings pretty quick. SOF units like LRRPs used for their XMs just two strings of paracord. Really interesting how everything changed since then. Anyways: Keep up the great work! Cheers from Germany!
I really like the Blue Force Vickers Combat application sling. I have the padded version two point with the pull tab to loosen or tighten it. It is a good piece of gear and makes it more comfortable to carry. I don't have it set up with a QD i just put a loop of Paracord on my rail and attached the sling to it like that. I like seeing videos like this of you kind of showing the evolution of equipment throughout your time.
Been working slings my whole life, run what works for you and is comfortable to you. Durability and simplicity is key. Great job thanks for your information and experience.
i wish I could put bfg on everything but for range stuff or things I dont use much I get STI 2 point slings. theyve held up really well, have the adjustable tab, strong and a lot better than the entry slings from most other companies, only 25 dollars as well.
nobody tried any quick adjust two points back in the day? One could buckle a silent parade sling to an alice pack lower strap for a homemade vtac sling, no sewing needed.

Have yall tried the McLean Sling? its rapid adjust 2pt to 1pt. I use it on my AR Pistol and Love it. done a few basic rucks with it, but no real torture test yet. I believe it was designed by a Seal as well

When it comes to connection point options, what are your preferences between qd, hk, and mash/paraclip
Rubberized carabiner or hard plastic carabiners aka climber hooks would help in noise issue on slings . Climber carabiners are made from the lightest and tensile metals should carry a gun nicely .
Dorr looks so engaged when Coch is speaking🤔. The Teams showed us the single point sling back in the day and as an old fart I still use it.
