Search for a device called a *Rota Cota* (in Australia) that is a tube like device and uses water pressure to clean the roller brush. Cleans it paint free in less than *five minutes* and maybe 5 or 6 litres ( 1 Imperial gallon or 1½ US gallons ) of water on an 18mm ( 5/8" ) NAP roller. Thinner NAPS are quicker to clean and use less water. Costs AUD$25 or USD$16. Use it once and if not available in your country you'll be wanting to import the damn things and retire in comfort.
For latex caulk, I use a silicone caulking cap. The trick is to put a little water inside the cap before you put it on. 1 1/2 yrs later caulk still works.
I use the outdoor garden hose with my bare my hand while you're grabbing and setting up 3 buckets, filling 2 of them with water, grabbing your drill, plugging it in; hooking the roller to the drill. By then, I'm done cleaning and rolling up the garden hose.
Mmm maybe. That’s after you unravel the hose, then coil it back away. This just fills up with a shower tub, and never needing to go outside. What if it’s 10° outside, or pouring rain? This definitely has value, especially if it doesn’t cost much.

That said, calk tubes are a pain, and I've tried many methods over the years, but eventually stumbled on using a latex glove finger taped on. I just cut off the finger of a used glove, tape it on the bottom, & it works great. Tape alone does not, which I've also tried in the past. That latex glove seems to keep the air out, & moisture in better than anything else, & I've always got an old glove around, that's got a finger or two with a problem, so I just cut off the best one, & use that. I've had calk last years in the tube that way, & without the dried up end I can never get out. Cheap, effective, & easy.

I know for me, a video or a set of video's is easier to get through than a book. I have ADHD and am an example learner. Trying to get through a book is daunting for me, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that category. But paying for a series of video's is definitely something I would do to learn a new skill or how to perfect one. Just an idea to ponder for ya. ✌🏼 & Thanks for your awesome video's. This is one of the best videos on how to clean the roller. The only problem is not covered the topic of washing out ther oller when it is in oil based paint. Water is cheap but any solvents not as cheap as water.. But if we use PVC pipe with a cup it will do the trick.
I clean my roller with a pistol nozzle on the end of the garden hose. Lay the bucket on its side, stick the roller in the bucket, and hit it with the high power nozzle flow. Take off your watch and glasses until you get the hang of it. The roller will spin up much faster than it will go with the drill, sling the paint off, and spin it dry.
I liked it when you said you didn't have to dirty up your sink or your lawn. Cool inventions too. For caulk I have used thick gauge nails, foil, and even tape. 4 years back was the first time I saw caulk tube caps at Ace hardware. The problem with any of these methods though is every time I would need to use the tube again it had dried up.So when I use caulk now I prefer too use it up so I don't have too store it. If I don't need alot I like getting those little tubes.

Been spinning the roller for years to clean it. I just cut off the metal of an old brush handle at the last 90 degree bend so I had a straight roller holder. This clamps in the drill well enough. Some good ideas for other bits but the world has more than enough plastic. Admire the drive to think of different solutions though. All the best.
I love a lot of your ideas and I also have different ways of cleaning all kinds of items because, like you - I want everything cleaned properly and don't want to waste a lot of time. They're just tips and tricks for myself because I've also been painting and doing small projects for decades and am always trying to save time. I love your drill attachment for cleaning rollers but I have 2 questions. Why don't you sell or ship to Canada and do you think you will in the future?... and Do you think you'll ever make your roller spinner for a smaller drill or would that not work correctly? I have both size drills but was just wondering. I've seen a lot of similar tools but at a much higher price point. Thank you for the great videos.
Sir, those aren't failed attempts. They are the ones you proved wouldn't work. You only fail when you quit trying to reach your end goal. This guy shows what most won't. How trial and error is a big part of success!
I agree! I have made concrete stuff, crocheting stuff, household ideas, etc. Once I perfect it, people don't realized I went thru at least 5 or 6 or even 10 "prototypes". Live and learn! I love keeping my first ideas and compare it to my final result. 🙂
I take a dewalt hot glue stick and butane lighter to the cocking tube tip after usage. on the next use, pull it off(zero effort) use and when done, hot glue it then put the original hot glue tip over new glue.
I really like all your paint cleanup organization tools. I think you're a genius. Thos is all stuff that shohave been in paint stores and big boxed for 30 years.
U Haul has a roll of plastic wrap available to wrap furniture in moving; it's about 16 inches wide and the roll is very long. I wrap the roller several revolutions with the roller still on the frame and twist the ends for a very tight seal. This has worked very well when applying elastomeric roofing, where you will do as many a 5 coats on each of 5 successive days. 1 1/4" rollers are expensive and instead of buying 5 roller covers, you need only one. Additionally, with elastomeric roofing, it would take an eternity to clean the roller of the excessively thick liquid. Of course this works for all painting, where you will return the next day for another coat.
Professional painter for 30 years here in UK. I think your coned roller spinner is a great idea. Better than the full length internal cage type of spinner cleaners. Shame you do not ship to UK.
Something funny. You showed your homemade PVC storage tube for the small roller. I made one like that and I drilled a hole in each cap and put a length of stretch paracord to keep things together. I made it for my badger hair shave brush. I had it in my carry on and when my suitcase went through the x-ray the whole line was stopped and redirected and 5 different people came out and finally they showed me the screen and wow...it looked like a pipe bomb. Good idea using your cordless.

i bought a tube similar to what you made to store your wet roller in that i found on amazon that is for tubes. do have to remove them from the caulking gun. $8 each I think
I do caulking before I paint. It helps me cut that straight line. I'm interested in those caps for the caulk tube's. Looks like they would work really well.
I’m working on that but we just made a massive move to a 3000 square-foot shop & I’m working all day long trying to get it set up so not much time for working on my store

Just ordered your paint roller cleaner, but I think if you created a stand to hold the paint roller attachment/cleaner after spinning/cleaning a paint roller to let air dry would be a great addition to your system. If the stand could hold up to 3 rollers, you could increase the sale of the paint roller attachment/cleaner.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY , you are a true pioneer. You see a problem, and you don't let it go until you have a solution. After watching what you have created I thought if you wanted to go even further,you could make the spindle on the roller detachable ( quick release ) and then have it hook straight to your drill . This would also allow you to make a stand that goes over the paint can so you could do the initial paint cleaning right back into the paint can .
I used to clean my rollers. PITA. Just wrap the roller and tray in a plastic bag until you're done painting and then toss it. I'm too old and time is too dear to screw with it.
Had rentals for decades. I just used a plastic grocery bag wrapped tightly over the roller head without removing it from the handle. Stick it in the bag, hold the excess bag at the metal rod of the handle and spin the head to remove the air. Then stick it in the refrigerator. It will last well over a month. If you take it out to use it, change out the bag to a fresh one to avoid the potential of crumbs getting on the roller. The fridge is the key! I use AC foil tape on my caulk tubes. Works pretty well as you can squeeze out all the air by smashing the tape and air can't bleed through foil tape like it does with masking tape. It's best to fold a little section over on the end of the piece of tape so you can unwrap the tape easier later. If you forget to do that, you will probably tear the tape up removing it but with the fold, you can reuse the same piece of tape 3 to 4 times.
@@DYI I was fortunate to be painting in empty rentals. My wife would ban me too! I had to buy my own garage toaster oven to heat PVC! The struggle is real! Lol

@@DYI I wouldn't do it inside. I bought one at the thrift shop just for that purpose. You can use it to take pipe, and form it to a shape you want on one end, then leave it round on the other. I made a cartridge to collect overhead dust from my table saw. I've also cut a slit down the length of pipe, then heat it, then flattened it between two boards to make a flat sheet of PVC which you can make all kinds of stuff with, and it glues very good with regular PVC glue. Sort of like making stuff with acrylic panels but it's much easier to bond with glue. Glueing acrylic really well can be hit or miss. At least that's been my experience.
If that hex wears off of the spinner - drill it out and use a threaded rod with a coupler nut to insert into your drill chuck. Could hot press one in, instead
You need to get that roller spinner to market. Ive tried to make my from an old cage but was but was not centered well enough and distroyed itself.. During the summer, i use the garden hose in the back yard and just spin it on the cage. No bucket you just need to angle the roller sonyou dont get wet but yours seems to work very well.
I use an old roller cage straighten the bend and spin it in the drill inside a 4” waste pipe bit wobbly but does the trick eventually will wreck my drill but i do like your coned hex bit insert much better 👍🏽
Wrap rollers and brushes in saran wrap between paint days to keep them from drying out. I buy my rollers at estate sales for 25 or 50 cents a piece then throw them out after use. It's a waste of water and time to be cleaning them.
I love your ideas and that your actually doing something with them. I know what it's like to be bombarded by constant innovation ideas while working only I just make them and put em in the tool box thinking about why more people don't do the same, or worse, just think about it and it stays up in my head. Worst thing is when you finally see your big idea take off only it's by somebody else years later and then you sit back looking like dude that was totally my idea 5, 10, 20 years ago! I keep thinking lately how great would be if there was a company that you would go to with the idea and they would help you get it off the ground. A reputable well intentioned one that's not looking to just make money off of you. Imagine if there was a platform where people could go just to brainstorm and then actually make these innovations and inventions happen, how much further we could be as a society! I mean, how many people have awesome ideas everyday but they just stay up in their head because they don't have either the drive or know how to make it happen. More often than not when you do have an idea you'll tell people and they just tell you why it won't work, then years later you see that idea working great, under somebody else's name 😒. By the way if you're reading this and you and this far in the comment, what kind of printer are you using to be printing out that much stuff most things are usually slow is shit and you got a lot of shit lol also, what kind of money is it costing in wasted while I shouldn't say wasted but... practice attempts, And can you reuse those practice attempts again like break down the plastics or whatever it is and feed it back into the machine?
You need to add an O ring to the lid. O rings have two methods for identification but are not too complicated. A retaining land might not be necessary.
BEST BEGINNING EVER! After I wash it in the sink (Latex), I go outside, turn the hose on the roller and spin it so fast all the paint comes off. and, when it dries it's fluffy again!!! (you cant lay it on anything but you can drap it over a 5 gal bucket).. just don't point the roller at your face or you'll end up like Blondie.
Great ideas...you might to consider getting them patented and, going on one of those "Shark shows" to get money so you can mass produce and sell to the big "Box stores."
Just an idea but you could slice the lid or the end of the tube with a slit to put an o-ring so it can be leakproof. I don't know how much a difference would make but it's just an idea
The cleaning a paint roller with a garden hose I found in mid century popular mechanics or science on the wordless cartoonish page, hints in every issue. Make the paint cleaner spinner strong and good for 3/8 chucks. Threaded rod or thread a rod with a couple nut to fit into the chuck. McMaster Carr list 5/16 hex for 4-40 6-32, 8-32, 10-32 The rod goes through the plastic spinner whole length, with big washers on the ends putting the plastic in compression when tightened. A lot stronger.

Hello. Can you please do a different patching like a California patch, backing board, using mesh tape as a backing and other patching you Can think of. And do a testing on it to see how strong each of them, like a simple punch or some pulling weight. I a diy been using California patch so i can just carry 1 plaster board because some house have different size plasterboard thickness. So carry 1 plasterboard using backing board won't work. But if you make a video so i can decide which patch to go for and it doesn't hurt if i need to carry 2 different plasterboard.
@@pro-duct911 if you don't have room to add wood the next best option is to use the metal drywall clips. They sell em at home Depot, lowe's or ace hardware. Just as strong as having wood backing and ten times stronger than a california patch. Wallboard even makes the drywall clips now and they're really handy and can fit a hole the size of your hand.
@@pro-duct911 oh alright I don't know anything about where they would be out there. If any stores carry wallboard brand tools than they might have them in stock these days they usually do. They used to be hard to find out there too but more places are starting to have them.
If you are going to be using your roller again up till a couple of weeks later, there are two easy ways to preserve your roller set-up. First, wet your roller as if you’re going to roll, leave frame on the screen in the 5 gallon bucket, take a kitchen waste bag and cover the top of the bucket, tape around the bag. Second is to follow the same process but snap the lid on the bucket (without the bag) with the frame handle sticking thru the capped hole in the lid, then wrap a wet rag around the handle that’s protruding.
I’ve kept rollers for up to a month in the fridge with just cling film wrap. When I start a job I take a new roller, put in the fridge at the end of each painting session and then bin it when the job is done. Rollers are cheap and disposable so it’s a waste of my time cleaning them when I can be sat relaxing with a beer at the end of the day

For caulk I have used thick gauge nails, foil, and even tape. 4 years back was the first time I saw caulk tube caps at Ace hardware. The problem with any of these methods though is every time I would need to use the tube again it had dried up.So when I use caulk now I prefer too use it up so I don't have too store it. If I don't need alot I like getting those little tubes.
Put your caulk in the fridge, stays good for years! Melt the end of a glue stick over the gas flame to seal the end.

Been spinning the roller for years to clean it. I just cut off the metal of an old brush handle at the last 90 degree bend so I had a straight roller holder. This clamps in the drill well enough. Some good ideas for other bits but the world has more than enough plastic. Admire the drive to think of different solutions though. All the best.
I love a lot of your ideas and I also have different ways of cleaning all kinds of items because, like you - I want everything cleaned properly and don't want to waste a lot of time. They're just tips and tricks for myself because I've also been painting and doing small projects for decades and am always trying to save time. I love your drill attachment for cleaning rollers but I have 2 questions. Why don't you sell or ship to Canada and do you think you will in the future?... and Do you think you'll ever make your roller spinner for a smaller drill or would that not work correctly? I have both size drills but was just wondering. I've seen a lot of similar tools but at a much higher price point. Thank you for the great videos.

I agree! I have made concrete stuff, crocheting stuff, household ideas, etc. Once I perfect it, people don't realized I went thru at least 5 or 6 or even 10 "prototypes". Live and learn! I love keeping my first ideas and compare it to my final result. 🙂

I take a dewalt hot glue stick and butane lighter to the cocking tube tip after usage. on the next use, pull it off(zero effort) use and when done, hot glue it then put the original hot glue tip over new glue.

U Haul has a roll of plastic wrap available to wrap furniture in moving; it's about 16 inches wide and the roll is very long. I wrap the roller several revolutions with the roller still on the frame and twist the ends for a very tight seal. This has worked very well when applying elastomeric roofing, where you will do as many a 5 coats on each of 5 successive days. 1 1/4" rollers are expensive and instead of buying 5 roller covers, you need only one. Additionally, with elastomeric roofing, it would take an eternity to clean the roller of the excessively thick liquid. Of course this works for all painting, where you will return the next day for another coat.

Something funny. You showed your homemade PVC storage tube for the small roller. I made one like that and I drilled a hole in each cap and put a length of stretch paracord to keep things together. I made it for my badger hair shave brush. I had it in my carry on and when my suitcase went through the x-ray the whole line was stopped and redirected and 5 different people came out and finally they showed me the screen and wow...it looked like a pipe bomb. Good idea using your cordless.

I ordered something off of Temu that was the same concept. It was similar to a melon baller but larger with larger holes.
I use food saver vacuum bags for my caulking related items.Works great.

You should put a recess in the inside of the cap for your roller holder that would accommodate a rubber o ring or a flat o ring like on a mason jar
i bought a tube similar to what you made to store your wet roller in that i found on amazon that is for tubes. do have to remove them from the caulking gun. $8 each I think
For the caulk tops, Ace Hardware sells rubber-type slip-ons and they work and are cheap.

I do caulking before I paint. It helps me cut that straight line. I'm interested in those caps for the caulk tube's. Looks like they would work really well.

Just ordered your paint roller cleaner, but I think if you created a stand to hold the paint roller attachment/cleaner after spinning/cleaning a paint roller to let air dry would be a great addition to your system. If the stand could hold up to 3 rollers, you could increase the sale of the paint roller attachment/cleaner.

After watching what you have created I thought if you wanted to go even further,you could make the spindle on the roller detachable ( quick release ) and then have it hook straight to your drill . This would also allow you to make a stand that goes over the paint can so you could do the initial paint cleaning right back into the paint can .

I’m constantly thinking of a better way to do things which is why I got so good at drywall repairs also.
I used to clean my rollers. PITA. Just wrap the roller and tray in a plastic bag until you're done painting and then toss it. I'm too old and time is too dear to screw with it.
Had rentals for decades. I just used a plastic grocery bag wrapped tightly over the roller head without removing it from the handle. Stick it in the bag, hold the excess bag at the metal rod of the handle and spin the head to remove the air. Then stick it in the refrigerator. It will last well over a month. If you take it out to use it, change out the bag to a fresh one to avoid the potential of crumbs getting on the roller. The fridge is the key! I use AC foil tape on my caulk tubes. Works pretty well as you can squeeze out all the air by smashing the tape and air can't bleed through foil tape like it does with masking tape. It's best to fold a little section over on the end of the piece of tape so you can unwrap the tape easier later. If you forget to do that, you will probably tear the tape up removing it but with the fold, you can reuse the same piece of tape 3 to 4 times.
I use to do that method, but my wife banned me from using both her fridge and freezer for brushes and rollers.

@@DYI I wouldn't do it inside. I bought one at the thrift shop just for that purpose. You can use it to take pipe, and form it to a shape you want on one end, then leave it round on the other. I made a cartridge to collect overhead dust from my table saw. I've also cut a slit down the length of pipe, then heat it, then flattened it between two boards to make a flat sheet of PVC which you can make all kinds of stuff with, and it glues very good with regular PVC glue. Sort of like making stuff with acrylic panels but it's much easier to bond with glue. Glueing acrylic really well can be hit or miss. At least that's been my experience.

If that hex wears off of the spinner - drill it out and use a threaded rod with a coupler nut to insert into your drill chuck. Could hot press one in, instead

You mean when cleaning up? I know several ways of getting some specialty spray nozzles that would help with that.
You need to get that roller spinner to market. Ive tried to make my from an old cage but was but was not centered well enough and distroyed itself..
During the summer, i use the garden hose in the back yard and just spin it on the cage. No bucket you just need to angle the roller sonyou dont get wet but yours seems to work very well.

I use an old roller cage straighten the bend and spin it in the drill inside a 4” waste pipe bit wobbly but does the trick eventually will wreck my drill but i do like your coned hex bit insert much better 👍🏽
Wrap rollers and brushes in saran wrap between paint days to keep them from drying out. I buy my rollers at estate sales for 25 or 50 cents a piece then throw them out after use. It's a waste of water and time to be cleaning them.

I love your ideas and that your actually doing something with them. I know what it's like to be bombarded by constant innovation ideas while working only I just make them and put em in the tool box thinking about why more people don't do the same, or worse, just think about it and it stays up in my head. Worst thing is when you finally see your big idea take off only it's by somebody else years later and then you sit back looking like dude that was totally my idea 5, 10, 20 years ago! I keep thinking lately how great would be if there was a company that you would go to with the idea and they would help you get it off the ground. A reputable well intentioned one that's not looking to just make money off of you. Imagine if there was a platform where people could go just to brainstorm and then actually make these innovations and inventions happen, how much further we could be as a society! I mean, how many people have awesome ideas everyday but they just stay up in their head because they don't have either the drive or know how to make it happen. More often than not when you do have an idea you'll tell people and they just tell you why it won't work, then years later you see that idea working great, under somebody else's name 😒. By the way if you're reading this and you and this far in the comment, what kind of printer are you using to be printing out that much stuff most things are usually slow is shit and you got a lot of shit lol also, what kind of money is it costing in wasted while I shouldn't say wasted but... practice attempts, And can you reuse those practice attempts again like break down the plastics or whatever it is and feed it back into the machine?

I wish you would 3D print a simple tool to pop the lid of the 4 gallon mud bucket
that's pretty good. My method is to grab a plastic bag, yank the roller off throw it away. If I'll be painting again that same day , bag it tightly.
You need to add an O ring to the lid. O rings have two methods for identification but are not too complicated. A retaining land might not be necessary.
BEST BEGINNING EVER! After I wash it in the sink (Latex), I go outside, turn the hose on the roller and spin it so fast all the paint comes off. and, when it dries it's fluffy again!!! (you cant lay it on anything but you can drap it over a 5 gal bucket).. just don't point the roller at your face or you'll end up like Blondie.

Great ideas...you might to consider getting them patented and, going on one of those "Shark shows" to get money so you can mass produce and sell to the big "Box stores."
Just an idea but you could slice the lid or the end of the tube with a slit to put an o-ring so it can be leakproof. I don't know how much a difference would make but it's just an idea

The cleaning a paint roller with a garden hose I found in mid century popular mechanics or science on the wordless cartoonish page, hints in every issue.
Make the paint cleaner spinner strong and good for 3/8 chucks. Threaded rod or thread a rod with a couple nut to fit into the chuck. McMaster Carr list 5/16 hex for 4-40 6-32, 8-32, 10-32 The rod goes through the plastic spinner whole length, with big washers on the ends putting the plastic in compression when tightened. A lot stronger.

Hello. Can you please do a different patching like a California patch, backing board, using mesh tape as a backing and other patching you Can think of.
And do a testing on it to see how strong each of them, like a simple punch or some pulling weight.
I a diy been using California patch so i can just carry 1 plaster board because some house have different size plasterboard thickness. So carry 1 plasterboard using backing board won't work.
But if you make a video so i can decide which patch to go for and it doesn't hurt if i need to carry 2 different plasterboard.

@@pro-duct911 if you don't have room to add wood the next best option is to use the metal drywall clips. They sell em at home Depot, lowe's or ace hardware. Just as strong as having wood backing and ten times stronger than a california patch. Wallboard even makes the drywall clips now and they're really handy and can fit a hole the size of your hand.

@@pro-duct911 oh alright I don't know anything about where they would be out there. If any stores carry wallboard brand tools than they might have them in stock these days they usually do. They used to be hard to find out there too but more places are starting to have them.

If you are going to be using your roller again up till a couple of weeks later, there are two easy ways to preserve your roller set-up. First, wet your roller as if you’re going to roll, leave frame on the screen in the 5 gallon bucket, take a kitchen waste bag and cover the top of the bucket, tape around the bag. Second is to follow the same process but snap the lid on the bucket (without the bag) with the frame handle sticking thru the capped hole in the lid, then wrap a wet rag around the handle that’s protruding.

I’ve kept rollers for up to a month in the fridge with just cling film wrap. When I start a job I take a new roller, put in the fridge at the end of each painting session and then bin it when the job is done. Rollers are cheap and disposable so it’s a waste of my time cleaning them when I can be sat relaxing with a beer at the end of the day
