Something we all need to "learn" from men and menswear: "What's wrong with repeating?" Most men have a couple of summer-weight jackets, a couple of winter coats, a handful of well-tailored suits, and a sensible amount of shoes that they keep in heavy rotation for the office, daytime events, and formal evening occasions. I'm generalizing, of course, but compared to the "urge" we womenfolk feel to buy something new and different for every single event, I think we should take cues from the men who feel that if it looks good, fits well, and lends itself to the occasion, there's no "crime" in rewearing a piece again and again.
As someone who has been shopping vintage and secondhand for more than 10 years, I always hit the men's section first. (Vintage) menswear particularly trousers, blazers, leather jackets and button down shirts are generally of SUPERIOR quality and will outlast any item in your closet made recently.
I have an Eddie Bauer jacket that I may have gotten in the men’s department (thrifted of course) that I wish I had the nerve to wear inside out. It’s a blue linen with all seams finished in coppery orange….who says pockets need to only be on the outside, eh? It looks so stunning over a slip dress that once had a gauzy overdress also in coppery orange. I am so so brave in my own bedroom. Outside not so much. 😕
@@marylhere I read your comment twice because I couldn't fully process the insanely cool outfit you were describing. Since you already chose the pieces & styled them the only thing you need now is a sign so take my comment as one & rock that fire outfit with the confidence that already exists in you 🧡💙
@@annthompson1 That's where tailoring comes in. Get a shirt that fits across the biggest part of your bust without pulling or gaping and the rest can be altered to fit with darts etc. (I'm a bigger busted person myself and have yet to take the plunge but mostly because wearing shirts at all is pretty new to me and I haven't made the trek to get anything altered yet!! But I watch enough sewing channels to know darts are key.)
My adult son is a real inspiration to me, he always looks neat and tidy and wears only what he likes, not influenced by trends at all, yet blends in nicely. He has some great pieces that have lasted for many, many years. The quality of his various priced tees are far superior to any of mine. Repeating does not worry him at all and to be honest most people wouldn't realise or care that he had worn "that outfit recently or previously". Time I took a leaf out of his book ☺Fabulous follow up to last weeks video Alyssa, thank you 💖
I love this follow up to the menswear styling video. So true. When i went shopping with my husband for menswear recently, some of these ideas occured to me: the fabrics were better, and he was buying one suit to last him for years, for example. I was surprisingly envious of the small but curated collection: everything he needed to clothe himself from head to toe and nothing he didn't. I was also envious of the joyful printed socks, so much so that i bought a pair for myself.
I identified with this video so much ❤ As a 5 foot 9” 58 year old whose key style words are classic, natural, and easy, I’ve found shopping in the men’s department at secondhand and vintage stores to be the best. I always find the clothing fits better in the arm and leg length plus so many quality natural fibre garments. Whatever isn’t perfect is easily tweaked by my tailor. Thank you!
I've worked for decades in men's and ladies designer fashion. These are the same conclusions I arrived at and dress by so was wonderful to hear someone verbalise what I know about dressing well. Brava Allyssa🤓
I'm always envious of how easy it is for my husband to pack for a trip or just go out to dinner whereas I stand in front of my closet staring and wondering what the heck to wear. I obsess on getting dressed for an occasion or trip and don't enjoy the process at all. Alot has to do with every day weight ups and downs too in my 60s. I have definitely tried to pay much more attention to fabrics especially living in a year round warm climate. I'm slowly moving towards classics and basics. Working on it 😊 I love your style but my big bust doesn't work well with button down shirts so I usually use them as an outer layer with a tank or tshirt underneath.
Becky I agree with so much with what you wrote in this comment. I too have a large bust and for many years thought button downs were just not for me. Then I figured it out -- by wearing 2 sizes above what I normally wear. if you don't feel comfortable with a minimizer on that day, I recommend going up 2 sizes AT LEAST than what you normally wear as a t-shirt or fitted top. I used to think I couldn't wear button downs either until I started wearing L/XL shirts W or actual men's shirts (Mid-30's+ " whose shoulder width was at least or larger than my bust width. What I find works for me is getting a triangular drape, like tucked into a belt, that begins at your shoulders. Actual menswear items in my personal wardrobe include a vintage western button down with from the 70's and very expensive Brooks Brothers shirt, including one with silk knot cufflink buttons edit: Google recently changed my user name from my actual name that I made when I was 18/19??? Feel like I have to write a disclaimer that this is a real comment.
So true! I find men's tailoring is always better quality than what's offered for women's clothes. When I was young I loved wearing men's suit jackets and/ or suit vests combined with more feminine pieces. Fit is an issue though, unless you want to embrace the over-size look. Finding a good tailor to adapt the clothing would have been great...
Fab analysis of the nitty gritty of refined personal style. I've long thought that menswear fabrics - such as tweeds - are far superior to those available for women.
I love menswear but have somehow forgotten how much! It seems easier to lean into menswear in fall and winter, but you have helped me see how I can do it in spring and summer. I lost my way, but am getting back on track! Can’t wait for LIVE cones back. Enjoy your summer.
Having a good seamstress or tailor is so important! I’m just 5ft and 62 years old…I’ve learnt this lesson a little late in life, that if clothes fit you perfectly, you’ll reach for them more and love wearing them! Tailoring is worth every penny!
I would love to see a video on how to shop for menswear for women. How do you figure out sizing and know what things you could make work in your wardrobe from the men’s department?
I’ve been implementing these ideas for the last few years, and it has completely transformed my style. I choose fit and fabric first, then shape and color. Your channel has helped me so much!
Brilliant Video, there are a lot of lessons to be learnt from watching my Husband Dress. As you say, take the emotion out of it. He focuses on what he wants, he concentrates on natural fabrics. Then he chooses clothes that are classic. Then if needed he gets them altered. Always looks well. Slow Fashion at its best. I never looked at it that way before. I am totally on board and when shopping next time I will keep this in mind.
Great analysis between men and women when it comes to shopping. Retail sales would suffer if it weren't for women! I think it all comes to marketing and social as you mentioned.
Love your outfit at 2.57! Your outfit at 5.20 is quintessential Italian!!!Ive always been inspired by menswear woman’s clothes today can be so cheap unlike classic good quality menswear! thx for this video 👍
Dang nice to know for the most part I shop like a guy does for clothes. LOL. I still might buy that must have dress that is trending but,, not so much and prefer the more natural fabrics like cotten, hemp,, silk etc. and hate the synthetics for the most part. Thanks for a great video and for sharing.
my Dad’s wardrobe consisted of just few items and he just arranged it according to the temperature. but he spent (relatively) alot on a pair of comfortable shoes which he wore every single day. I used to say it’s so boring when i was young. now on reflection i get that it’s minimalism of wardrobe some 30 years ago!
Fabric/material is my first consideration when choosing wardrobe items. I have an all-natural fiber wardrobe and only wear leather, not plastic, footwear and accessories. I’m allergic to the common synthetics and also have a tendency to overheat, being post-menopausal. These allergies are not uncommon, but they occur after repeat exposure, so usually later in life. A patterned rash resembling the pattern of the fabric is characteristic. I also hate Spandex and am trying to eliminate it completely from my wardrobe. I hate the tight, clingy, bandage-like fit it gives to clothing and it feels like a battle to put it on and off, on hangers, etc. It also makes ironing nearly impossible because it makes the clothes pucker. Unfortunately, it’s almost everywhere. I have better luck with French, UK and other European brands and especially like Sezane and Equipment, but only their natural-fiber items. I just don’t shop fast-fashion, the fabrics, materials, fit and other qualities are so inferior.
As I am wearing (shortened by myself) husband's former tailored trousers as a kind bermuda and a rip shirt from a man's department store today 😊 I do strongly agree. Better materials, sturdier made (cotton or even cashmere is thicker), the tailoring is better executed and the cuts are more classic. And on a personal note: I am tall and have long arms and legs (wear size medium). A lot of women's wear looks somehow ridiculous on me. For me it is easier to alter (myself) or bring items to my tailor than buying trousers which are either huge in size and long enough or on the shorter size and fit regarding size. The best about men's wear is that we able to find those classic items second hand. I find suits, cashmere sweaters or cotton sweaters often times in thrift shops.
Well done! A brand new way for me to view fashion . Good tailor and cuff links have such an impact. I will be mindful of this in my own wardrobe going forward.
comfort and fabric are the two things I always pay attention to first when shopping nowadays. I've learned through experience: no matter how good something looks on me, if it's not comfortable and if I know that the fabric is not breathable, I will not wear it for as long as I have other options (I almost always have other options lol).
Love the outfit with the white trousers , stripy shirt and scarf. Interested to know why you chose the loafers over a finer shoe like for instance the heels you wore earlier in the video. What would you think of putting ballet flats with this outfit?
What surprises me is that in the area where I live, men’s clothing of natural fabrics costs much less than similar items in women’s departments. And usually they are of a much higher quality, while pricing is still decent. It is just unfair! 😢
You always bring something fresh to think about. I love an edited look, basically copy a man it's basically a man uniform so I made myself a woman uniform with add ons like jewellery, scarves etc. It's so much easier to get dressed. Thanks Alyssa for sharing. I've had so many ideas from your vlogs. 😘
I love your videos. They make so much sense. I have always shopped secondhand and wore items for years. But the last few years I noticed that I was buying new clothes but enjoying them less. I would have items that I bought 10 years ago at thrift store and still wore and something that I bought last season just sat in closet. Your videos made me really look at my closet and what I enjoy wearing. I returned to some of my tried and true designs that I had stopped wearing and even discovered that I love a basic shirt. Thank you. BTW, am curious if you are familiar with the Quince company. I have been buying from them. They sell quality clothes and home furnishings in a sustainable model, classic designs, linen, cashmere etc. at reasonable prices with a free shipping and one year return policy. I think that they embody much of what you speak about. For me(someone on social security) they give me the option to get nice classic items that I can afford.
I’ve only recently discovered and subscribed, but have spent my entire career in Mens Fashion. I love all the menswear tips as well as the previous menswear inspired video. I have to be careful not to dress too “Mens-y”!
We can learn from menswear, definitely. I like watching Real Men Real Style on YT for that, even though I’m a woman. Of course, only the fashion style videos, he does get into male-only topics sometimes. The Gentlemen’s Gazette is good, too. The advice these channels give about fit, quality and timelessness applies to any wardrobe, as do your videos.🙂
Hi - I just tried to access your podcast through the link and it did not work. Would love to have the link for it on youtube :) Great video as usual :)
I find your videos really educational and a lot of fun ❤ definitely looking forward to every Sunday because of them. However, what's really distracting for me when I listen to it is fabric rubbing off of mic, and creating this noise while you move or gesticulate 🙈 I think it would help things if you put it on the shirt or somewhere close where it's not underneath the fabric.
I've lost a lot of weight unexpectedly and all my beautiful thrift finds are too big. Yay ? Lol being petite and plus sized , finding those perfect pieces is such a challenge I'm kinda bummed about having to either trust a tailor to take things in (and I mean most of my things are bespoke vintage things) or finding new pieces . It's a weird transition period for me.
@_inflection3209 What an interesting stage you're in right now! Sometimes a journal can help with choices - writing about how you're feeling after a change in weight, how you see yourself now and whether there are some new styles and cuts of clothing you'd like to try out. There may be a style icon you'd like to borrow from. As for your lovingly curated wardrobe - there's a few ways of looking at it. Perhaps trying on your different clothing categories in a thoughtful way - your own eye may tell you that some pieces can be carried forward into your refreshed closet, and others may be better to pass to a friend, or use the fabric for trims, craftwork etc. My advice is to just take your time, enjoy the process - and maybe do some Alyssa techniques of knotting, tucking, belting in the meantime to make your older clothes still wearable today.
Interesting. My husband only wears athletic dry wicking clothing. Recently he was going with a group of guys to work on a lady's deck. I noticed his shirt was inside out and the tag was sticking up. When I mentioned it he says I don't care and neither will the guys. When I got back I asked if anyone mentioned anything and he said no.😅

I shop for my husband and it feels so easy esp to build over time.
What’s your trousers’ brand?
You are so right about well-fitted clothing. The majority of people, men & women, look frumpy, sloppy & overweight due to ill-fitting clothing.

So put off by you saying you are “someone who identifies as a woman.” You ARE a woman. That’s an unsubscribe from me.
I agree…I’m unsubscribing too
Good for you ladies! The spouting of gender identity ideology needs to be called out as idiotic.

Omg you lost me at someone that identifies as as woman lol
