- Let's look past the marketing to find the real differences (and similarities) between toothpastes.
A dentist's guide for how to find out what ingredients are in toothpastes and which ones you should be looking out for. What are the differences between the different kinds of fluoride? What is potassium nitrate and why might you want it in your toothpaste? Does whitening toothpaste actually do anything?

As someone who overthinks every single thing, I appreciate you breaking this down! Thank you so much.

@Mohammed Emiliano obvious scam
so this guy just has the most relaxing voice in the world huh
*That is called “ASMR”.* 😁😁😊
I’m absolutely shocked you only have tens of subscribers. I found this Video to be very informative, and high quality. Your voice and presentation was very pleasant.
Thanks so much for the comment! I guess subscribers will come as I do this more, but as long as some people out there are watching these, I'm happy
@@drtyler2075 One year later and I'm subscriber number 885! Thanks, Doc! Keep it up! :)

You are the most dentist sounding dentist! Are you all so gentle speaking? It’s very soothing. Great video 😊
*And it is called ASMR.* 🥰😁
This was a fantastic video! Thank you so much. Also the editing and
visual aids added perfectly to your well-metered speech.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for breaking down the info to where even with my medications I can understand which toothpaste to use. I often fall asleep at night before I can brush because of my medications I am on (Suboxone and Gabapentin for pain, Klonopin and Zyprexa for panic disorder/Anxiety) so this info helps a lot! I often overthink a lot of things because of my anxiety disorder but this video helped put me at some ease! Thank you, Dr Tyler!
This is exactly what I have been looking for as I’ve been researching toothpaste for the last hour. So informative, thanks!!
Thank you very much for this. I'm from the UK and what you have just explained to me on your video has made so much more sense to what dentists here in the UK have told me over the years ( i'm 46yr old ). Thanks again.
From the first second into the video, I thought this doc's so humble
Thank you so much! This was very helpful and very easy to understand. The only thing I wish it had is the option of subtitles, but otherwise your voice is clear and easy to follow
watched multiple videos and this was by far the most helpful. thanks for simplifying this very confusing topic
This was very informative. I am a toothpaste fanatic, can never have enough. I just feel that I don't have the right one every time. But now I know what to look out for.. Thanks Doc..
Honestly thank you. I needed more toothpaste as I was running out and went out and specifically got Stannous Fluoride toothpaste.
have you heard about the microsilver tothpaste?
I have watched so many videos related to this topic but your videos is so informative, the way you explained things was so gentle. I would definitely share your video with others.
From experience, I totally agree with going to the dentist and having a dental hygienist clean and polish your teeth to remove any stains. During your visit ask the dentist or hygienist what you can do to prevent the staining. Maybe you need to stop or cut down on drinking dark soft drinks or coffee with cream and sugar. They might even say you can continue to drink and eat as before but you need to brush differently or with a different type of brush or toothpaste. I was getting stains on the inside of my bottom front 4 teeth (the 4 between the canines) from drinking coffee with cream and sugar. I was able to continue drinking coffee with cream and sugar but I needed to brush my teeth 20 to 30 minutes after I was done drinking and if for some reason I wasn't able to brush them, I was told to rinse and swoosh my mouth with warm water immediately after I was done drinking my coffe to help dissolve and spit out the remaining sugar in my mouth. Both the brushing and rinsing with warm water took care of the issue.
I would avoid using whitening toothpaste, but if you decide to use it, only use it for a week or two. If the stain doesn't go away during this time, discontinue using it and go see a dental hygienist. Whitening toothpaste will wear away your enamel after using it for a long time. If you wear away your enamel, you will have yellowish/brown teeth. Not a good look.
The addition of milk makes coffee stain less
@@LiliS319 That's not what I was told by my dentist. He said the best way to drink coffee to avoid stains is "black" no milk, no cream, and not sugar. I didn't ask about the milk but I'm assuming it's the lactose in milk. Lactose is a sugar.
@@bernardocisneros4402 the idea is that the milk proteins bind to the polyphenols (the stuff in coffee that causes staining), so it doesn't attach to the teeth as much.
But I think I see where the disconnect may be. You're american right? I think americans when they say coffee they mean the watered down stuff, (~americano).
Europeans generally don't consume watered down coffee, of course it may vary but it's not a drink of choice in most countries here that I'm aware of. When we think of coffee it's either a shot of espresso or a shot of espresso with some amount of steamed milk and/or foam. You don't need a doctor to see how disgustingly a shot of fresh espresso stains teeth and tongue compared to a cappucino, but I'm sure it's just a matter of how much you water down the coffee wherer it stains even less.
@@LiliS319 Yes, I'm American and drink the watered down version. My sister drinks the cappuccinos and espressos. They are too strong for me. My coffee is like lightly muddied water compared to the mud my sister drinks, but she enjoys them.
Wow this was a fantastic breakdown and accurate portrayal of the toothpaste aisle!
Thank you just a young boy trying to find out which is the best toothpaste
Same but minus the boy part 😭😭
Seriously doctor, thank you you break it for us in a simple way.
Thank you Dr. Tyler! This was very informative, entertaining (meaning I payed attention and didn’t get bored at all!) and extremely helpful.
I learned a lot and thank you for adding the examples of toothpaste we can use.
Thank you once again!
you're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
*Thank u so much Doc! I wish your channel was recognized more.* 😄
I LOVE this video.
I do have a question about not using any toothpaste at all. There's a doctor who doesn't use any toothpaste at all as brushing without toothpaste is just as effective. How would someone even keep their mouth from bad odors that way?
(P.S: Your voice is extremely soothing.)
Important information passed on with so much subtleness and without any jazz.... Thank you doctor. This was really helpful. 😊
A lot of dentists I have heard do not recommend Stannous fluoride for the teeth people it also kills a lot of beneficial bacterial. And charcoal toothpaste is very abrasive along with most whiting toothpastes that actually damage the teeth scratching them up
I live in the UK and I find many tooth pastes, especially whitening ones, give me sore dry chapped lips. My skin must be sensitive to a particular ingredient and when I brush I usually get alot of toothpaste foam around my lips. So I had to be really careful about which brand and which type I choose. Currently I find Colgate Sensitive with Sensifoam works brilliantly. No bad reaction. But some of the other Sensitive pastes from Colgate do react with my skin. I just hope this product remains available.
Love this explanation. I always tell my husband there is no difference between that $7 dollar tube of Sodium Fluoride toothpaste and the $2 one from Colgate. It’s all in the marketing.
One other thing I would consider too, is taste! I use pepsodent (or aim if I can’t find it,) because the taste is pleasant. I always follow up with a mouthwash as well.
Really glad I found this! I'll go with Crest for now. Finding the perfect toothpaste is the next step since I have already found the best e-toothbrush. Which the Oclean Flow btw!
Crest cause teeth sensitivity and gum bleeding
Wish I found this an hour or two ago. Just wasted a bunch of time looking at a ton of different toothpaste ingredients to come up with a similar conclusion. Once my Stannous Flouride Whitening toothpaste supply runs out, then I'm going non-whitening as the video suggests. Crest whitestrips did more to whiten my teeth in 3 weeks than a near lifetime of whitening toothpaste did any way.
Definitely a good start but I’m really looking for a toothpaste with mild flavor. I find most toothpaste I get has such a strong flavor if I do it before bed i stay up late, like right now.
You’re not alone. There are lots of people that don’t like the standard minty taste. I’d recommend the Twice brand’s Calming Vanilla Lavender. I haven’t used it personally, but I’ve heard good things
Exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you so much.
I wish that I had such an attractive dentist. Thank you for the information.
Really needed this, now I'll just do my research about toothpaste brands. Since this is my next step after actually finding the best electric toothbrush, the Oclean Flow.
Always been a Colgate fan! Really love a product that cleans my teeth well, just like the Oclean Flow!
Dang, doc. That is the best explanation I’ve gotten on toothpaste. Thank you.
I currently have braces so I’m looking for what would be the best for my teeth. Love the straight to the point but thorough explanation. 🙏 thank you
Unless you drink alot of coffee, black tea, or red wine, you typically don't develop enough stain to need a whitening toothpaste, as most toothpastes are capable of removing small amounts of surface stain.
Originally, this style of toothpaste was marketed towards smokers and coffee drinkers. Topol was the first big one in the US that I remember back in the 80's, but Rembrandt was the first one that started the whitening fad. Probably because Topol had a reputation of being very abrasive, whereas Rebrandt was alot milder.

My mom got me some toothpaste for my tooth sensitivity called sensodyne but I wasnt really sure if it just a big scam but now I know that there is pretty much 3 types of flouride and the toothpaste has stannous flouride so thanks I mightve quit using that toothpaste and just go back to like crest and never be able to just take a bite of ice cream when I want.
Very informative. Thank you. Most toothpaste does not say where made. Why is that?
Mate, that was a great video. I really appreciate it. Cheers
This is the best video on toothpaste on the entire youtube!! Thank you so much!!!
Solid info on here!!! I always wanted to know what the difference was in the types of flouride
I don’t know what to say, but, thank you very much. Love you doc.
I so appreciate the beginning warning/ awareness! Lol makes me trust you much more. More ppl should say that even tho it should be obvious
Awesome. I learned a lot.
Wow great video, very informative and great use of pictures/charts/examples. I’m ready to tackle the toothpaste aisle like a pro!
I’ll use the one that has 10/10 doctors recommended it
Which one??
Rajam Joshi the one that doctors recommended 10/10
@@minicyan7364 damn you living life

This is the information that I was looking for. Simple and best
Thank you, Dr Tyler!
Very helpful doc. Just got my braces and my teeth are very sensitive.
Great video. You just didn't really explain what does potassium nitrate do though you emphasised it's on its own category for sensitive teeth. Does it have an actual added health benefit for the teeth? Or does it just symptomatically treat sensitive teeth?
Dr. You explained so easy to understand!
When words like “detox” and ingredients like charcoal get involved, medical science leaves the conversation.

Stannous fluoride kills bacteria, but is there a concern that it will kill "good" bacteria? I think of the advice to avoid using antibacterial soap for regular handwashing. Is that also a thing with the mouth?
I've also heard to avoid rinsing after brushing, to let the fluoride linger on the surface of the teeth for longer and have a better effect. I've tried this, spitting out as much of the slurry as I can, but I think I'm inevitably swallowing a trace amount of toothpaste. Is there an increased concern about this with stannous fluoride and the suggestions to avoid ingestion, or would the amount be so minimal as to not really matter?
Great video. A lot of very good information regarding the different types and uses of toothpastes.
Thanks so much. This the most useful video about toothpaste I have ever come across. Subscribed.

Excellent video, very well organized. Thank you!
Great information Doc it was very helpful, thanks for sharing the video. Hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. Take care, Joe
I just look for the highest w/v fluoride ion percentage. Highest I've found is 0.16%. However, if you regularly use mouth wash with fluoride, then the tooth paste makes no difference.
I’ve used Complete Care by Arm & Hammer for 5 plus years now. No issues. Has baking soda.
Yes, but Stanis fluoride can potentially stain your teeth
But what about many herbal toothpastes, you didn't mentioned
I like how using products with stannous fluoride allows me to not have to wait 30 minutes after brushing to eat. Yay!!!!
The toothpaste I use is the Colgate baking soda and peroxide I find that to do a good job cleaning
Hey, what is your opinion on toothpastes that contain baking soda, like the brand Arm & Hammer?
There are 2 types of teeth stains, intrinsic and extrinsic. Extrinsic stains occur on the outside of your teeth, and can be removed simply by brushing regularly with any toothpaste. Intrinsic stains happen on the inside of your teeth, and no amount of abrasives will get rid of them.
Intrinsic stains require a chemical agent (often referred to as "whitening agents") to remove. There are lots of toothpastes you can buy which contain a whitening agent. The main two agents you will see are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. Toothpastes marketed as "whitening toothpaste" often contain one of these agents to help oxidize intrinsic stains.
When you said that the only difference between normal toothpaste and whitening toothpaste is abrasiveness, I can't help but disagree. I feel it would be more accurate to add a category for toothpastes that contain one of these peroxides, as they perform a completely different function than toothpastes that don't
Best video on this topic you can find. Thank you 🙏
Clear, concise and informative. Thank you :)
Definitely underrated channel
Thank you! The other day I got overwhelmed looking for a new toothpaste and now I realize I way overpaid for what I got!
Excellent presentation!
Best video on the topic. Thank you!
Beautifully explained
What are your views on ingredients like Triclosan or Zinc? In Canada at least, Colgate Total's formula had to be changed to include a Zinc compound instead of Triclosan - for the function of additional anti-bacterial properties. I am curious as to whether one or the other has more anti-bacterial effect.
@MRK it really does matter which toothpaste u use. i statred using non flouride Ayurvedic auromere toothpaste and my upper and lower teeth are super sensitive now,...
You've simplified things so much better but which u can do other forms of tooth paste like natural, charcoal and diy toothpastes that uses lemon juice, baking soda and apple cider vinegar as homemade ingredients.
It's like you've been reading my to do list!. I've don'e a video on Charcoal - check my other videos. I've been working on one about natural toothpaste. Hopefully I'll get around to finishing that one soon
I needed this sooo bad!!! Thank you for this amazing video

Thanks for this video though doc!
Just subscribed and looking forward to your videos on fluoride free toothpaste and whether that's a good choice for dental health. Thanks so much for your concise video!
This video and the charcoal video I found very helpful! Thank you! I’m curious about mouthwashes... I know you said whitening toothpaste is just more abrasive but what about whitening rinse? Say I use crest strips to whitening my teeth, what would you suggest in between for surface stains? A rinse or toothpaste?
White Strips work pretty well. They have the same active ingredient that some "professional" whitening gels have, just at a lower percentage, so they might work a little slower. Toothpaste might work on the stain between your teeth, but that might be tartar, which will need to be scraped by a hygienist. I don't think the mouthwashes do anything. They have some peroxide in them, but probably too low a dose to actually be effective
Always use warm slat water over any mouthwash, they never have the same benefits as something like warm salt water
This was so Helpful. Thank You!
My favorite toothpaste is Arm & Hammer with baking soda.
Please do a video about mouth wash 🙏🏽🙏🏽
For all us cheapskates, Dollar tree has two toothpastes with stannous fluoride. One is a Crest and one Colgate. Plus they have name brand toothbrushes!!! It's my toothbrush toothpaste place!!
Great information. My toothpaste contains Aminfluoride. What is that?
Excellent video on preventive gum care!
Don't forget about Hydroxyapatite tooth paste.
Can you do a video on good teeth whitening methods.
Great vídeo ! Really really helpful !!! Do you have any social media where you share more things like that ? Thank you very much Dr. Tyler
Best toothpaste breakdown I’ve ever seen. ConsumerLabs review induces CDO (that’s OCD in alphabetical order). Great job doc!
DrTomMD approved!
I'm a tooth paste fanatic but I hate the taste of mint od peppermint. I wished they introduce other flavors. I would love a Colgate total with cinnamon.
It’s tough out there for people that don’t like mint. I find the natural brands tend to have a better variety of flavors
Which is better toothpaste
What toothpaste have stannous floride and their list please
You probably won't see this, but:
What should I do if I *always* get a stomachache after using a toothpaste containing fluoride? I swear I don't swallow any, but somehow I always feel sick afterward. As a result, I've used a fluoride free toothpaste for years (no stomachache with that), and I actually haven't gotten a cavity in that time (used to get them a lot as a kid). I understand the fluoride preference, but my body just doesn't seem to agree with it. Is there a next best option, or am I just an abomination to the dental community?
It sounds like you're doing well without fluoride, so I'd say keep doing what you're doing. Fluoride helps reduce your risk for cavities, but I don't think it's not as important as a good diet and good habits. There are definitely plenty of people out there, like you, that do well without fluoride. Of course, there are others that are predisposed to cavities that need all he help they can get, and so fluoride is a good option.
I was hoping to find something that suits me best I'm trying to strengthen my enamel it's strange bc not all of my teeth are sensitive for some reason it's just certain ones my front canine's , anyway. Maybe the "charcoal" whitening pastes didn't really work as well for me maybe it's a great product for some , I guess just different experiences for different people ya know. Anyway 🤪 everybody stay happy , stay healthy , and stay blessed ❤️
Sometimes teeth can be sensitive because you clench or grind your teeth. I'm suspicious that might be the reasons your canines are sensitive. If sensitive toothpaste doesn't help, maybe try a night guard. Of course, your local dentist might be able to give you a better answer. Thank! you too!
