Good question! RDA is the scale they use for the Abrasiveness level of the toothpaste. So in other words how capable the toothpaste is of polishing or cleaning a hard surface by rubbing or grinding.
@@PanchoVilla-fe8pt Not necessarily! The lower the RDA number the less it will cause damage to your teeth and gums through abrasion. My gums would bleed and I had bad breath. I tried everything and went to my dentist. She just said do salt water gargles but that didn't work. Also flossing was painful. She recommended I do some deep cleaning which was very expensive. So basically it was either pay us or just deal with your gums bleeding. I put up with it for almost a year. Then I found your video and bought a water pick. My problem went away in a 2 weeks. My mouth feels super clean and I have no pain. Thank you for sharing advice that actually helps people rather than just trying to make money. It's been 3 years since that and I haven't had an issue.
@@OsarugueEnoghayin ~ Water Pic is a brand of a water-jet machine that squirts water in short bursts between your teeth. I'm on my 3rd one in 44 years, so, they last about 15 yrs, which is great! They sell them at Target, Wal-Mart, pharmacies and online.😁
Did you think you might be vitamin C deficient? That caused my gums to bleed in the past. To be sure I have always used a waterpik because flossing is very difficult with such tight crowns in some teeth - so thankfully I didn’t use the pfas floss 😮💨
Fellow dentist here-really cool perspective you have. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the marketing of toothpastes, but unless you have a specific need (high caries risk, sensitivity, etc.) it really is unnecessary, as the main goal in oral hygiene is disruption of that biofilm. I personally use ClinPro 5000, because I have multiple restorations from my childhood that I want to keep healthy with high amounts of fluoride, and I also have sensitive teeth. I also just enjoy that minty fresh feeling toothpaste gives, even if it’s not a true indication of cleanliness. Thanks for the content, always nice to hear a fresh and grounded point of view.
My dentist told me that it doesn't matter what type or brand of toothpaste I use. There are so many out there that supposedly target so many things like plaque, tarter and gingivitis. He said I could use the cheapest most basic toothpaste and that I would be fine as long as I brushed. So instead of spending 8 or 10 dollars on toothpaste I went out and bought a tube of Aim for a dollar. All I can say is that I hope he was right...
How refreshing.... a dentist not promoting flouride. I gave up flouride months ago and my gums stopped bleeding i switched to non flouride toothpaste, this caused me to go to the dentist thinking i had a hole in my tooth because it hurt when I brushed and ate anything sweet. Last night i used flouride toothpaste to give my teeth a break from sensitivity and spent hours with bleeding gums and when i flossed today they are bleeding again. If you dont use toothpaste. How do you get the fresh feeling in the morning to get rid of the sleepy breathe? Does brushing make you feel fresh enough? Have you ever known someone to be allergic to flouride? My gums clearly don't react well to it however my dentist pushes it like most do 🙄
You can use a regular toothpaste. My mom got problem with bleeding gums too when she used whitening toothpaste. We figured they put too much of whitening substances into it and it harsh on gums.
I was told about 25 years ago from a young hygienist fresh out of dental school that you don't need to brush your teeth. You can use a rag to wipe off your teeth. You really need to concentrate on flossing. 25 years later, I'm just starting to understand that gums need love, too.❤ I'm an avid flosser trying to teach my 10 year year old the validity of flossing. Keep up the good work, doc. 👍
Thank you so much for your honest and candid review of toothpastes! Much needed……use Crest most of my life but realize that there is no magic there. As the daughter of an orthodontist and a hygienist……wife of a dentist and son finishing dental school as we speak…….we need to be honest with people. Thank you so much!
My great-grandmother was from Latvia. She lived 101 years and had ALL very white teeth until the last day of her life. She never used toothpaste. Her secret was to brush her teeth in the morning and evening before going to bed with water, and then rinse her mouth with a glass of water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
That's what they do in the old days. Also, they took flouride out of the water and if you want flouride treatment at the dentist, it cost you money to do so.
My dentist also told me he was very skeptical about toothpaste. He had an even worse opinion on mouthwashes that just stain the teeth. Thanks for an honest video.

Sooooo Impressed by your honesty! I have 2 connective tissue disorders which have lead to my teeth sharding away and now being very sensitive. One thing that has helped has been to stop eating any nuts and sunflower seeds! My health food store suggested it and it has helped immensely! And it wasnt the crunching because I can NOW EAT CRUNCHY STUFF AGAIN! Also because of the connective tissue disorders I cant floss so I carefully clean between my teeth with a toothpick or a pick like the one you showed and I can only brush once a day. I dont have a lot of teeth left because they are gradually all sharding away and not holding onto the fillings so Im hoping to be able to get those implants because I cant get dentures (my gums will blister from the friction) but up here they are over $50 thousand and I havent the money. BTW has anyone ever told you how much you look like Canada's beloved Mr. Dressup? I grew up on his show. That's a big compliment!

I have read also that toothpaste is not always needed for brushing the teeth. In those few cases where toothpaste is not available at the moment one can just brush without it. It is the process of brushing that removes bacteria and food debris on the teeth, however, for myself I prefer using toothpaste.
A humble dental students perspective: Brushing itself does prevent cavities and that is backed by many studies. Fluoride has overwhelming amount of studies to support its effectiveness in reducing cavities through (1) remineralizing/rebuilding enamel and (2) decreasing the solubility/ demineralization of enamel. Fluoride is in toothpaste and thus recommended by dentist. The toxicity would occur if a 6 year old ate a tube of toothpaste, so it is important to keep toothpaste out of kids reach. An adult would have to eat over 20 tubes of tooth paste before toxicity. Here is what I see the cause of cavities are based on my clinical experience as a dental student. Many cavities are in between teeth where brushing cannot reach or reoccurring around a previous filling of a lesion between the teeth. How to prevent these extremely common cavities? FLOSS! I can’t support flossing enough because I know most of us don’t do it. Think about it like sunscreen which has gotten a lot of attention for preventing wrinkles how about flossing to prevent tooth loss? something just as if not more unaesthetic not to mention has functional implications like not being able to eat! Let’s floss and sunscreen more this year 🎉 So back to this video: there are no clinical studies that are referenced and he conveniently promotes his powder. And he doesn’t have any disclaimers which is irresponsible because as a licensed dentist he inherently has influence over the general public’s opinion. Also dentist don’t make money off of people buying toothpaste, Colgate (etc) does. This man did commodify this video. It is interesting how people believe this dentist because he is saying something “different”. Like a social experiment. And it shows again the influence a license professional has over the public which is understandable. Abrasion is a type of wear that studies show is closely linked to toothbrush bristle hardeness. Oral B has a cool feature on their toothbrush where it lights up red when you are pressing too hard. (Not sponsored ) I notice a lot of men are very heavy handed and maybe a reminder could help. And of course avoiding hard bristle tooth brushes. Moral of the story: FLOSS, brush with medium to soft bristle brush, fluoride helps strengthen enamel, and continue learning and investing in yourself. In the early 70s I worked in a pharmacy and a dentist said he cleaned his teeth with soot, salt and peroxide. Thought he was joking but he was serious. Never tried it though myself
Using salt everyday dries out mouth teeth. Warm salt water gargle once a week as a mouth wash not a bad idea since salt has healing property, not daily though as i mentioned. Peroxide too acidic not recommended

My grandmother never brushed her teeth. She rinsed with salt water, used a tooth pick and ate her homemade bread that had gotten hard to clean her teeth. She never went to a dentist never had bad breath ❤
Salt water has medicinal properties which can eliminate cavities, odors and even germs. My doctor even advised that whenever I have sore throat, gargling a warm salty water would help...and surprisingly it does help

I have been using Hello charcoal toothpaste--since I had chemotherapy, I can't use fluoride toothpaste. I can't explain the feeling I got when I 1st brushed with regular toothpaste for the first time after chemotherapy. Immediate buzzing sensation followed by burning. Literal burning. Castor oil? That's a new one for me. I'm allergic to most toothpaste (think it's the sls in almost all of the common brands) so what I buy is pretty expensive. Speaking of wearing away enamel. My teeth never felt weaker than after I've gotten "cleanings" done. You're taking someone with already weak teeth, holding erosive chemicals to the teeth for 15-20min, then after they're nice and weak, you're electric scrubbing them. Meanwhile the antibacterial effect can be achieved with something much shorter. I'd assume they also target good bacteria.

I have been having a problem with gum loss. Also sometimes some of my teeth hurt when I brush. The pain seems to reoccur after breaking my normal cooking habit and eating hot food; I have been in the habit of making cooked recipes in the evening, refrigerating them, and then by the time I eat them the next day they are cold and I have not been re-heating the food. Sometimes my teeth hurt when I get cold food on certain teeth. My dentist suggested Sensodine toothpaste (it has potassium nitrate). When My teeth hurt, I brush with it and then after one to 3 days or after a few brushings, my teeth quit hurting.... yeah I read somewhere that you can brush with a natural soap instead of toothpaste... Sometime in my adult life I got into a habit of flossing good and sometimes brushing too, after every time I eat... now I can't eat unless I can floss immediately after I eat, otherwise food particles in my teeth are too irritating to me.... before I reverted back to eating cooked food, early in my adult life I was on a diet high in fruit. Maybe I hurt my enamel with too much acid from the fruit... my dentist found 4 cavities just after I reverted back to eating cooked food... I never had these problems when I was a kid....
Hi doctor.. So if I were to use a toothpaste which one would you recommend? Hopefully a drugstore brand... Budget friendly. Thank you... Interesting information though.
I was looking for that answer as well, given the title of the video. I'm not quite ready to abandon tooth paste so in the interum, what grocery store toothpaste would be best.
With the shortage of supplies, it's EVEN harder to find a toothpaste that's not too abrasive. Arm and Hammer's low abrasive toothpaste is SO hard to find and limited to stock. I Settled on Sensodyne Fresh Mint for a few months.
I have to use Sensodyne in the box with green on it. It is a light mint. A dentist I had seen put in a crown that was too big and it has messed up my mouth. Major pain. Can't use the toothpaste I used to use. This is the only stuff that doesn't hurt me. Thank God I found this.
I just love your videos Dr! 🥰 You are so informative and kind I wish I lived near you so u could be my dentist 🥰 Thank you and keep the great video coming.
Such good information. I have a lot of issues now with my teeth and I thought it was the toothpaste that was causing it with a slow and steady erosion.
So, if your Perio Mix has an RDA level of 7 and baking soda has the same, basically your product is baking soda (maybe mixed with some other antibacterial powder with low abbrasiveness)? Congrats, Doc!
Tooth powders, PerioMix, or anything else is really just a powdered, mild form of toothpaste. It is more like a clay of sorts. It is primarily calcium carbonate (chalk) with other additives to mimic what actual toothpaste does. It's pretty cool that he suggests not utilizing toothpaste, but he isn't 100% correct. You're also going to be swapping proven ingredients for things that aren't as effect. A lot of these powers utilize pepperment and other additives to give you that stinging, clean feeling and to stimulate saliva production that people associate with a clean mouth.
May have been other variables study didn’t note or incl like diet etc. Not my first choice. For many growing up who are older considered punishment LOL!

Pls which one is water picks
@@OsarugueEnoghayin ~ Water Pic is a brand of a water-jet machine that squirts water in short bursts between your teeth. I'm on my 3rd one in 44 years, so, they last about 15 yrs, which is great! My first one, my fiance' bought it for me the day I got braces on my teeth. 3 yrs later, the braces came off, but I didn't want to stop using my Water Pic...so I haven't! They sell them at Target, Wal-Mart, pharmacies and online.😁
I went carnivore and teeth improved.
Oxalates caused my problems like teeth cracking.

Hey wade . I use prevident 5000. Is it ok if I don’t ride after using the toothpaste ?
Ride what, and what does riding have to do with oral care ? 😂 No disrespect intended, I suspect autocorrect betrayed you.

My gums clearly don't react well to it however my dentist pushes it like most do 🙄
None flouride Mouth wash and tongue scraper. Brush your teeth with water scrap your tongue then mouth wash then floss
You can use a regular toothpaste. My mom got problem with bleeding gums too when she used whitening toothpaste. We figured they put too much of whitening substances into it and it harsh on gums.
@Pencil-o1p as soon as I use toothpaste. My gums bleed terribly with flouride, not with non flouride but I get sensitive teeth
At 72 years old I quit toothpaste and use a dry brush and floss or some baking soda on the brush. It prevents mouth sores.
I use a rag sometimes too, especially on my back teeth … sometimes the toothbrush doesn’t seem like it gets everything I can still feel it my tongue

I dont have a lot of teeth left because they are gradually all sharding away and not holding onto the fillings so Im hoping to be able to get those implants because I cant get dentures (my gums will blister from the friction) but up here they are over $50 thousand and I havent the money. but would i still have a smelly breath?
It is if you have a job toothpaste is you make your breath not stink.
Let’s floss and sunscreen more this year 🎉
So back to this video: there are no clinical studies that are referenced and he conveniently promotes his powder.

02:01 *🛑 Brushing without toothpaste can be as effective as using toothpaste, as most toothpaste is abrasive and can damage enamel and gums if used frequently.*
03:09 *🚿 Thorough cleaning with or without toothpaste, using floss, small picks, or a water pick, is essential for oral health, while abrasive toothpaste should be used cautiously.*

@@joanwood9480 You can also just use Castor oil, sans flavoring. And, I never use any sort of sweetener. That pretty much runs counter to what I'm doing.
@@joanwood9480 No sweeteners needed. You can do Castor oil straight or add any essential oil you'd like. I suggest finding a larger/wider toothbrush. I use a Radius Flex toothbrush.
Hi Dr. Memeth what is the best toothpaste for both regular toothpaste or organic? Please let me know
Wow! Thanks! And I like to dry brush while watching TV.
I can take my time do it correctly. My teeth feel really clean afterward.
I needed this video last month!!!
My parent was born in the 1940 they don’t use toothpaste their teeth are so in perfect shape and condition not even a bad breath I’m amazed by their own remedies . Still in their 80 nowadays they don’t have fake tooth nor implant ! 🥰🙏🏽
what do they use to clean teeth?
@@sheldontaylor2002 they may not have a single tooth to clean 😄😄 that's why he is not replying for your question, answerless 🤭

Was their diet made up of garbage foods like we all eat today?
Guys,
YaH The Heavenly FATHER (Genesis 1) HIMSELF was Who they Crucified/Pierced for our sins and “HERE IS THE PROOF”
From the Ancient Semitic:
"Yad He Vav He" is what Moshe (Moses) wrote, when Moses asked YaH His Name (Exodus 3)
Ancient Semitic Direct Translation
Yad - "Behold The Hand"
He - "Behold the Breath"
Vav - "Behold The NAIL"
Bro said he doesn't use toothpaste
I used "Colgate total" and it was the harshest toothpaste I've ever used. I'm very surprised to see its only 70 RDA
What do you use now ?
@@SleeplessinOC arm and hammer sensitive. Much much better
@@posteveryside-beatsnews really ? I’ve gotta try it . Thanks . But does it make teeth yellow from your experience ?
@@SleeplessinOC not at all. I drink a lot of blue top milk for whiteness anyways
Hi doc any alternatives for toothpaste? Like salt or Baking Soda? And what is there abrasive level too? Thank you!

I developed dark stains and dental pits on my teeth as a result of brushing with baking soda for several months until I went back to brushing with fluoridated toothpaste. I am now switching to Splat® toothpaste which I think is better because it has hydroxyapatite in place of fluoride.
Quiet air of confidence and professionalism.
Thanks for your honesty and sincerity. 👍🏼 Excellent! 👍🏼

Too bad the western world doesn't promote all natural herbal toothpastes. I don't know what I would do without Sudantha and Supiriviki here in Sri Lanka.
Yeah sudantha and supiriviki best ever specially for those who are suffering from gum disease...but selfish western doctors in Srilanka advice not to use them as they dont contains fluoride🤷but what about the all the others who use fluoridated toothpaste..they do have cavities😁
Let us pray like never before for the people of Afghanistan, especially the Christianes who face great harm. What amazing love.,Jesus poured out His life on that cross for the sake of mankind. He will never give up on you. He loves you. He died for you! 🙏

Trying to cancel dentists😭😂😂

Very true words!!If your mouth is healthy, your body will be too!!Very very true Doctor!!
NGL he got us in the first half.
Legend.
Have you scientifically compared the tooth health of large groups of people who brush with toothpaste versus those that brush without toothpaste?
@Sister Mary Clements Theory in science does not mean hypothesis!
Didn’t he show the six month study in the video?
Where's dental digest when u need him
I’ve struggled with this for so long. You saved me!
Thank you Mr Joseph R. Nemeth! You are true and honest professional telling the truth!
With the shortage of supplies, it's EVEN harder to find a toothpaste that's not too abrasive. Arm and Hammer's low abrasive toothpaste is SO hard to find and limited to stock. I Settled on Sensodyne Fresh Mint for a few months.
What about whitening? What are your recommendations for this?
I'd like to know too.
I have to use Sensodyne in the box with green on it. It is a light mint. A dentist I had seen put in a crown that was too big and it has messed up my mouth. Major pain. Can't use the toothpaste I used to use. This is the only stuff that doesn't hurt me. Thank God I found this.
My grandmother always used salt and baking soda, never lost a tooth.
As a Dental Hygienist,I am with you 100%
What are your thoughts about the Italian toothpaste Marvis? It’s expensive but good.
Please check your diet too, high consumption of acidic foods and drinks can lead to erosion also. I will do a video about it soon.
The way you capture moments is so beautiful. 😍
I read a study where an elderly man had brushed his teeth for decades with Ivory soap exclusively and his teeth and gums were in perfect health.
Yeah, I tried that. My teeth turned ugly yellow within just two weeks. People could see my yellow teeth from a block away. No thanks.
May have been other variables study didn’t note or incl like diet etc. Not my first choice. For many growing up who are older considered punishment LOL!
