I dont have a single guitar in my house thats in standard. I did an entire album in open d and open c, just playing with two fingers on the top two strings. Its great for singer/songwriter stuff.

@SeanDaniel I've played guitar for decades (campfires, family time & in a Southern Gospel groups, etc). But several years ago, a car wreck caused genuine nerve damage & hand weakness. I am trying D/E TUNING to build hand strength (Barre chords) & compensate for lower dexterity. ALSO...people receiving radiation & chemo develop serious nerve pain. D/E tuning lets pickers try lap/slide guitar playing. Thought you may find it relevant...(or even marketable.)
The timing of this lesson could not have been any better. Been playing around with DADGAD tuning recently. Really loving your approach. Definitely will check out that fingerpicking course.
Keep nurturing the creative, the last guitar innovator of significance in my opinion was Hendrix. I knew his dad but never met Jim, the 70,s was a long time ago but Al, had a smile that stays with you. My biggest problem is sticking to any one style long enough to get good at it, I love them all.
This seems to be a repeat from earlier version. Are you scripting yourself. Open tuning on a 612 oh shame, but sounds so good. So the pent shapes are adjusted to string tuning, ?
That new Taylor is a lovely guitar! (I know everyone else has already said so, but I think it bears saying again. Some added loving care went into that one, I reckon.)
@@Jfre2 If you're consistent and consider something like Ferrari (or even just an SUV with the frontal area of a truck) to be ridiculous and over-priced (and most cars cost more then $4000, so this can be stretched even more), then yes, maybe, given the absurdity of luxuries. However, if it's just this luxury that gets the "ridiculous" tag, I'd have to ask why? I mean if I were to buy a stupidly big house, people might even talk all sorts of nonsense about what an "investment" it is (only where the rules are constructed to make such a house into an "investment"). It sounds better than all Sean's other guitars; and he's got some really lovely guitars, so that's no small thing. For someone for whom beautiful sound is of more value than beautiful metallic paint and beautifully road-dominating shape it would be worth paying to have that sound. (And for someone who doesn't/ doesn't hear it - and it's OK if it's an illusion - but it's not - ... er ... OK losing it now) ... It can be worth that kind of money. Not to someone like me, but if a guitarist who plays a lot had the cash to spare, it'd be worth it. (If I had that amount disposable - with maybe the choice between putting the difference into more car vs more guitar, I reckon I'd go with the guitar. I could just say a real truck is one you can spray clean with a garden hose.) It's all dependent on values, once affordability is in place.
@@Jfre2 New strings definitely make a big difference, so I suppose the direct comparison only counts when that aspect is evened out. I also get the feeling that certainly with collectible guitars, people pass the point where they're no longer really paying for the sound. Still, right now that Taylor sounds great to me. :-)
@@Jfre2 I disagree that it doesn’t sound and play better than a cheaper guitar. Just not 2-3 grand better. And I would argue that a pro player would be well advised not to bring such a nice guitar to a gig...especially if it’s just going through a pickup/Pa anyway
Yeah i definitely agree with you on a lot of this. Dollar for dollar I think the 214 or 314 win. I’ll definitely say the 816 is ‘better’ than a 314, but it’s definitely not TWICE as good in my opinion. A lot of people might think it’s worth the price for something 30% ‘better’. But I also believe that in a lot of ways, once you get over a certain threshold of quality, ‘better’ is more of just what your taste is.

Sean, I have experimented with Open D a little bit, but never found it very useful because it seemed like you were stuck in the key of D. Am I missing something?
HI Sean what a great discovery for me today. Thank you. The problem with progressing as a guitarist is that Life often gets in the way to a seriously good practise routine. Any suggestions for getting on top of this?
That is what Skip James used to do. He called it Bentonian tuning and he picked it up from guys who'd been in WW1 with Caribbean players, (Bahamians, I seem to recall)...

My first time trying non-standard tuning and it's fukking fun. I'm 55, been strumming for 30 years, but just that. Strumming. I'm still an inter player. But I have to ask....we're you pissed in this clip, mate? 😂 OK if you were. Rock n Roll!

Thanks much! This seems like an incredibly viable tuning for people with limited hand dexterity. Greatly appreciated!
Outstanding lesson! Thanks and Cheers, Malcolm

Hey Sean, probably your best lesson yet, for me, really an eye opener, thanks for sharing ! ❤
Happy to hear that!
Sean, I love your Taylor 815ce! Great tone and just beautiful.
816ce. Typo!

Open D is great for many reasons already stated but it is less stress on your neck if you want to play in Open E….. Just Capo 2 and you’re in Open E.
Pro tip!
This is a very good and informative video. Bit late but I am just getting back to playing.
Excellent lesson! Lots to learn here. I hope to use some of these ideas in my teaching. Will give a shout-out of course. Thank you
Very helpful for beginners, thank you so much🙏🏼🤗
Thanks Sean...that's a great to look at it!!
Great lesson Sean. D minor tuning is really sweet too. You just play up a 1/2 fret on the "F" string for the major chords for pretty easy fingering.
thats what i thought rn. i still struggle to use the thumb when barring below the index finger so i might just use open d minor

Great video. Inspiring
Phew! I don't think I could have coped not knowing what the intro joke was!
Definitely gonna try this tuning out sometime, thanks! :)
A fun chord in this tuning is 020040
Great course Sean, also that Taylor sounds great, good guitar for teaching, notes ring true, chords are crisp and full.
Love that Taylor Guitar!
Put a capo on the second fret and play Little Martha ....then pop a brewski and don’t worry about ..majors..minors ..flats ..or ..sharps..etc. 😎🎸
I have been using this open D for 20 years. Thanks for reminding others! It really opens your mind better for creating new chords.
thank you! this video has been rlly helpful :)

Wouldn't it be more practical to tune to Dm? Barre the minors and sharp the 3rd for major. Easier than trying to flatten a note behind the barre.
