Dude! I am 67 yrs. old and just picked up The Guitar a week ago. I can see many ways this will shorten my study time... bless yoj for putting this up!
finally a video where dim chords are not considered "redundant, not important, nobody uses them" - thumbs up!

Mike, you are true “Guitar God” !!! I am a 58yo struggle to play guitar. I had a great guitar teacher but he had taken ill.
I have been trying navigate my way through all types of media to further in my studies but had been unsuccessful, until I found your video on UA-cam. Bless you sir you may it all become crystal clear. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you 😂😂😂😂😂 You life long fan
Greg
One minute in and I'm already happy I put this on.
Awesome lesson!, in the pass I spent more than $3,000 for a class in college that toooooook 3 months!, here it was 15mins !, awesome 😢!.
Well, C D put that 3K to good use and come over. I have a non-profit practice channel. Just a hobby for me. I'm looking for some players, well, that like to play. I assure you I'm not a spammer, I have nothing to sell. I have no idea what music you even like, but I have to start somewhere, I have to try.
@@practicerepobarrie thanks for the sincere and warmhearted reply!, I just joined channel!, and I will definitely tell all my friends!, good luck and great success!, sincerely Charles D.
Charles, thank you so much. I hope I will inspire some practice time from you. People won't get better if they don't play. It is good to watch and learn when you can, (I do it too) but you have to make time for yourself, to do it for yourself. I hope I can help you in my way - to let you enjoy an easy carefree way to practice the guitar.

Wow! Hey I have a bridge for sale if your interested in it?
I have been playing guitar for over 30 years and this is a revelation for me. Some people just have the gift, which I have always been pretty jealous of. I have always had to work hard on my playing and understanding of cord structure. Goes to show you are never too old to learn as long as you are willing to discover. Thanks young man for opening an old mans eyes and giving him insight into something he has loved longer than most woman in his life. Except Mom :)
Im in your boat at 67 !

I just met guitar George and he still knows all the chords.
I'm in Dire need of guitar players - just a fun practice channel
Hallo Mike, since a couple weeks ago when I had watched your channel concerning the three chords combination, you have changed my life completely by just showing how they relate together. Thank you very much and I like to compliment for it. You will always be a reminder of my guitar progression. Not only you helped me but many other viewers on your channel. I am 63 years old and just started to lern a guitar about 5 months ago, practicing practically every free moments I find. It‘s fun! Thanks again and keep the good work alive, Aslam.
The best explanation of the circle of fifths I have ever seen!
Somebody give this man a raise 👏🏽
At 72 years old, I wish this approach was taught by guitar instructors when I started at 9. Keep it simple stupid really makes a difference. Thanks so much for your insight!
At 63 I AGREE! At least this Fella helped Us find some more enjoyment in "Our Golden Years"! "Wah Wah Wah"( Bowie!!!) Take Care!

After many books, uncountable videos and piles of crappy note pages this video is by far the one and only BEST! CHEERS for a GREAT 🎁! PEACE!
This is easily the best explanation of Circle Of Fifths I've seen. Nothing else I've seen comes close. I can use this. Thank you for putting it out. Subscribed.

I'm 72 yrs as of now and been playing since I was 15 , been in and out of bands and now just enjoy playing at home , writing songs etc. I have seen these Circle of Fifth wheels for sale on sites but have not been sure about them until I watched this video make clear precise usage of it. This makes perfect sense and thank you for this brilliant walk through, I've just bought a Guitar theory wall chart off Ali Express ( very cheap and excellent ) but will now get a rotatable " Fifths " wheel as this looks invaluable for ease of use and headache saving. Lol. I think most of us know that horrible experience when getting a melody together for a song and just can't that one damn chord that seems to be missing to finalise it. This could be the answer , let it be, let it be. Many thanks.
Wow, I'm 60 and been playing since I was about 8
I'm playing music for God now instead of the bar scene.
Care to collaborate sometime?
There is a real art to explaining the Circle of Fifths simply and concisely in thirteen minutes. Bravo sir.
Agree entirely.. Best simple and concise video I've seen on Circle of Fifths...🎵🎵👏👏☘

we're so incredibly lucky to live in the digital age when hard earned experience can be shared instantly around the world and (often) for free. i'm happy to have stumbled upon your channel.
Learned more in 13 minutes, than in 13 years!! Self taught.... THANK YOU!!!!
Yes simple really when explained properly
I'm almost 60. This is the BEST EXPLANATION about 5ths Circle. Clear, logical and easy. Congrats from Santa Catarina Island, South Brazil. Sorry about my English.
I’ve been wrecking my brain for over a year now, trying to make sense of a guitar. I went to a guitar school, watched hundreds of videos, downloaded apps and subscribed to two of them, but this video is the best video I’ve seen regarding guitar. Everything makes sense now. Thank you so much.
people often skip out music theory and just learn songs. music theory improves your knowledge from song playing to song writing.
How many times have you heard the sound in your head, but couldn’t find the “right” chord on the fretboard…this solves that problem…thank you so much!!!
Yes this help when transcribing, more people need to learn to do this on their own. It would help them in songwriting. We learn different things at different times, sometimes making sense sometimes not. I know that the more songs you play the better it is for your ears for then notice the difference in chord voicing. I have a channel to help people practice and keep playing. I invite you to please come visit, check it out, and see if I can get you to play more guitar. It's free.
When I was 12 my dad gave me one of those chord dictionaries. I saw right off all the repeating shapes. When I learned the shapes then taught myself all of the inversions. I showed my dad my hand done book which was much smaller than that huge dictionary lol

This is the best lesson I have ever seen and listened to. I have played guitar since I was 17 years old in 1975. I had a big ass Mel Bay Chord Book with 3684 diagrams of chords in it or some shit. The book gave no direction except overwhelming the hell out of you. I never met anyone back then that knew how to read guitar musical notes nor did I ever take a lesson. Learned by jamming with our players.. I dont think TABS were invented at that point. I wish this music theory would have been explained to me like this back then. It takes a lot of pressure off the beginners when they can simplify things, and this really gives the guitar player a good direction to go in. Thanks Mike
Come see my idea of helping people - I do my best to put out good tabs to follow, can you help check my work ?
I agree, but learning is a bit easier now. I made a jam channel for people to go and jam along to the music - like we did to records years ago. Times have changed, Michael. I have put a lot of work into my channel, please come check it out as it might help a bit. It's just a hobby, but if it keeps people playing then I'm happy to help.
We have all reached the next level of musical clarity! This guy is awesome!
35+ years ago I noticed this and did my own personal research drawing our the Guitar cords by hand. Not only did I come to the same conclusion as you just showed but noticed the hand configurations were the same for many chords as well by baring the first fret. So there are really less than 36. 20 or less as they repeat. And then I discovered they could be moved up and down the fret board as what I learned some time later were celled movable rhythm chords. This is before the internet and any good books. Thanks to people like you, the new learners don't have to struggle the way we did, albeit it was a good learning experience.
I've been playing guitar for almost 30 years. This is the most helpful video or tutorial I have seen. I wish I would seen this years ago and saved myself a lot of headaches.
When I was in college years and years ago you had to wait in line at the bookstore to get your textbooks and the line moved as slow as molasses at the North Pole so I used to read the books they were selling (never buying) . I chanced upon a very thin paperback book that contained songwriting advice and information from semi-popular songwriters. I was impressed by the late John Prine's words of wisdom he stated; "To be a good songwriter the main thing you need is a bad memory." I think that speaks for itself.
I've been playing guitar for a long time and never has anyone explained this to me like this before. This is more than fantastic. Don't know why it took me so long to see this!
thank you , this is very helpfull...glad I found it...
Merci beaucoup for this. No fluff, just what we need.

As you know Mike, many guitar beginners have a great trouble with strumming. I wonder if you have a video to it by explaining an easy method of strumming? Looking forward to your other tutorial channels! Thanks, Aslam.
I went to music school and really struggled understanding and learning this. You lay it out so simply in a way that is so applicable! Thank you! Keep it up!
Can I invite you over to practice, Sorry Wesley I don't mean to be intrusive, I'm just a guy here trying to expand his hobby. Not trying to show off, just give people something I wish I had years ago. So I made it. Just like this guy did. Circle of fifths has been around he just put it into a way people can relate to.
This was EXCELLENT. As a sporadic guitar player over the last 20 years, I had never really tried to understand the relationship between chords which greatly limited my ability to create music. This is probably the cleanest explanation of the Circle of Fifths I've seen, thanks so much.
Amazing! Have been tinkering on the guitar for 30 years and you condensed the fundamentals in 10 min. AND you provide pdfs! May the rock gods shine down on you!

Wow! First time the Circle of 5ths made sense to me!! Thanks man, I really needed this…
My God Mike. I'm 75 years old. I learnt lap steel dobro at age 11 but learnt only tab from my father. I picked up the guitar at age 33 to learn more about technique & theory so I could apply it to dobro/ lapsteel playing. So went on this long jaunt through music theory. So I went through this experience for the past 40 0dd years. People said to me learn the circle of fifths. But how nobody sat down & showed me how to use the circle of fifths. Seen the circle of fifths hundreds of times but had no idea of how to work it. So now I do thanks to you. I have 12 bar music pounded into my DNA. Now I have another
Now I have another direction to expand too.
I'm glad I waited on the arduous grind of chord learning, I knew it was someone out there that had there stuff together...thanks a bunch! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars
Un believable finally I understand I have a chord wheel I bought years ago and have been confused and never looked at it again it’s on my table now and I am using it. Way to go with this. U b the man…..
Great explanation and simplification of what can seem overwhelming especially to beginners but even people who've been practicing for years and are just now diving into the theory a bit more.
Thank you so much brother I'm 50 years old I got a guitar when I was 5 years old and you finally explained it to me I get it I get it thank you so much

I’ve spend a lot of time studying on my own many of these relationships, but you’ve concisely summed up much of what I knew, and even more of what I hadn’t yet put together. Very well done.
I paid for guitar lesson for 8 years as a kid, but never was I told how to use the scales. Figured it out on my own in the last year, and surpassed my teacher by miles.

The way you broke all the chords down and worked up to the Circle of Fifths was fantastic. Well done 👍 There are a ton of decent guitar players on UA-cam who teach guitar, it's a pity the majority of them can't teach. You're definitely part of the small group who can, Mike. Great content.
I don’t want to write songs I just want to understand the fretboard. This video is the best I have seen that explained the circle and guitar relationship. Thank you!
Man. Thank you so much for this. I’m at the stage you were at and I bought a book of chords and I hate it. I’ve always wanted someone to come alongside me and help me where I’m at. I’m a pretty decent guitar player, at least rhythmically, but I hate studying superfluous crap. This is such a lifesaver. Subscribed and liked, my friend.
It's called lazy, superfluous crap when it's used with knowledge is infinitely better and more complete
@@kippsguitar6539well this is part of music theory so he's moving in the right direction at least.

BOOOOMM...mind blown! I was taught by a Nun at school for 3years, on acoustic in the 80's and we never done this! I even got my RSA II from Trinity College of music in London and I dint know this. Wow, just wow.
Amazing work putting this together, Mike! The 'why' is what's been missing all these years and it is so clearly explained here.
I've been playing guitar for more than 30 years, and I have never seen a chord chart as useful as that wheel. I know the circle of fifths, but applying it to chord diagrams is innovative.
That circular chord chart is a product that needs to exist.
Most logical explanation of the circle of fifths I’ve seen. Definitely going to check your other lessons.
You made this simple and I applaud you. Many teachers will CLAIM their explanations are simple to grasp and they are not. KUDOS
One of the best videos on UA-cam. Well done and thank you.
𝑯𝒆𝒚 ☝️𝒀𝒐𝒖'𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒛𝒆 🎉
This is an amazing explanation. It is the TRUTH. It is the elusive truth that the vast majority of teachers don't know, and every guitar player's life would be imeasurably better, less stressful and more optimistic if only we knew this at the beginning. I have played guitar since my schoolday, through university, as my main hobby throughout my career and now at 75, I still do. I didn't know this. It would have given me a worthwhile foundation from which to set out exploring stuff. Whaaay! I walked into the light with this video. Whaaay! Thank you! Absolutely thank you!
Also, the 7 chord blocks you see on the circle of fifths create a very easy to remember pattern on the guitar if you group the 3 inner major chords together in a 1-4-5 pattern on the fretboard and then the 3 minor chords together in a 1-4-5 pattern 3 frets down. Super easy to remember.
Could you explain this a bit more please? Absolute beginner here just trying to understand what I'm getting myself into and this sounds really interesting! :)
@@simonvegas793yeh me too and I'm not a beginner. If we play C F G as our major what minor shapes exactly do we play 3 frets down? So, C major is related to A minor, but what does 3 frets down mean exactly?
Am dm em? In bed and not guitar in front of me, but curious to know for certain...
My son just got his 1st guitar yesterday and this is the 1st video I gave him to watch.
Fantastic teaching, Mike. Really helpful!
I've watched so many videos on the circle of fifths but it FINALLY clicked. I appreciate you for unlocking what it all means on the guitar!
Unreal. I'm not even working on guitar, but piano: this video is more helpful than any piano tutorial I've encountered. Massive props and respect. You should be paid VERY WELL for this kind of instruction. Liked/subscribed
If you wanna put it to good use, maybe I can help you practice
As you're a piano man something occurred to me some years ago...my guitar is a piano..kinda.
6 strings all tuned to 5 intervals of a scale. With an E at each side.
Your piano has keys..white for the natural notes, black for the sharps/flats.
My guitar has frets instead.
So you could view each string as a piano keyboard tuned to a specific note or interval. 6 piano keyboards side by side in effect.
More to the point these keyboards side by side in standard tuning with, like a piano, a full chromatic scale beginning on the interval it's tuned to..12 notes..and every note across and along the fret board is in exactly the right place to enable it to be played. Scales..chords..licks etc. And the whole thing begins again on the 12th fret..13th for F and C.
Then consider all the open tunings...and they work as well...
AND you can add a seventh string and it still works.
12 Notes. 4 of them have no semi-tone between them. One note less..or one note more and it would not work at all.
It always amazes me whenever I think about that..the simple fact you can play the thing.
Even more to the point the fret board is a very complex thing..but it's complexity hides it's simplicity.
So learning only these chords to start would apply to piano also?
I know you're not asking me but; Chords are chords, no matter the instrument. The songwriting process for piano or guitar both can benefit from the Circle of fifths. The songs I have on my channel, my wife can play on her keyboard. Plus the cool thing about her keyboard, it has a transpose button - which works like a capo for the guitar. Not so easy for a piano.
Ian, very few of us are able to grasp the full potential of a guitar. The capabilities seem endless. and any effort to fully understand it might be a lifetime project.
Just as I. You seem to have put some effort into a deeper level of understanding of the instrument. That gives me a feeling of kinship with you in your endless endeavor. I wish you good luck, and pleasant journey. I'm 91 years of age, and still trying working on it!
This the most efficient and concise explanation of anything musical I have ever seen! If you truly want to understand the music you're playing then this is it! Everything else shows you gimmicks or half truths. Some make claims to play by feel but these will leave you where you were before, noodling on the same scales and chords you've been playing for years. Do yourself a favor and just take the time to process this information. GO SLOW and when it sinks in you'll know more than most of guitarist or even musicians that you know. 100% THUMBS UP and SUBSCRIBE!
Clear concise and to the point! Well done and thanks a lot!

All hasn't been playing Guitar this is more easy learned,he speak to understanding
Great video. I would say learn the 6 chords from the circle (miss out dim chord for now) in the 2 or 3 keys you are likely to sing in, also need the 7 and major 7ths. The 7th of chord 5 leads you back to chord 1 and major7th are just so pretty.
Don't be afraid to change key of a song you like to suit your range. Circle makes it easy to do this
𝑯𝒆𝒚 ☝️𝒀𝒐𝒖'𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒛𝒆 🎉
A bit late to the comments section, but just wanted to say that in terms of actual chord shapes, you could condense the number down even further by using movable chords (eg move B minor up a fret to get C minor etc). Obviously knowing different voicings for chords is really useful but if you're a beginner and understand that all you really need is a handful of shapes in order to play most chords in any given key, is a real motivator for continuing learning. Anyway, great video and one of the best I've seen regarding chords/circle of fifths.
You’re right about these being the core chords … but I wouldn’t want to play only these chords! Even the first songs I ever learned used 7th chords; in fact the progression I was taught is I-IV-V7. Seventh chords are fundamental to the blues and everything derived from it. And I love the sound of suspended chords. So yeah, you can do some early 1950s hits with only major/minor, but if you want to get even to the level of the early Beatles you'll need more.
In fact the idea that you can make good music by only using the chords of the major scale - might not be a good idea especially for modern music. A large percentage, perhaps majority is in minor and don’t even use 1-4-5. Even including relative minor into that can still be boring and played out. Many of the sounds you seek employ modes. This was a major obstacle for me in music composition since I always tried to compose music using the chords of the major scale. Like you said other chords are so fundamental and so are modes, and blue notes. Etc.
The V7 chord is generally the only way that the vii dim chord is used in most music as it just adds the V as a root note.
Another great way to learn where to go on the fretboard using barre chords.
Example: key G
3rd fret low E is the root for the one chord which is the note “G”. Where’s the 4 chord? Directly under the G! The 3rd fret on the A-string is the note “C” and the root for that chord.
So where’s the 3rd chord? I=G. IV=C. V=D
Now you know where the one and the four chords are, the five will be (two semitones), or two frets higher on the A-String. The 5th fret on the A-String is the root for the A Barre chord.
Now you know how to find the I, IV, and V! Start with finding the keys root note on the low E string and then apply this pattern….really helps learn chord progression patterns. Hope this helps because it changed my life 😊
Very well explained. I finally understand the circle of fifths. Thank you

I have learned more about chord structure than anyone has ever explained before. Thank you Mike this is priceless for me.
I've been taking piano lessons and still found this very interesting. I like the way you've laid out the chords in Major/Minor/Diminished on the circle of fifths.
One thing that I think I'd mention that isn't in this wheel is the harmonic minor. Using harmonic minors allow the dominant 7 chord progression i-iv-i-V7-i, which I think sounds very nice.
Ty ty Ty!!! I’ve always thrived on shortcuts and the way you spend little time convincing us we need to know this is lets me stay engaged and not drift off.
