Open D tuning is great fun for all levels, from beginners to advanced players on acoustic guitar. This lesson starts by showing the beginner how to play a basic shuffle and then more complicated pieces for the advanced guitarist. Open tunings can be a great way to get into fingerpicking, so it may be something you want to consider. I have done complete lessons on all of the songs played, some of them are from my Patreon catalogue which I am making available here on UA-cam for the first time. They are, "Have you ever seen peaches" and "I'm so glad". "Rambling on my mind" has proved very popular since I released it in 2018. "Vestapol Blues" and "Simple twist of fate" are on my Patreon page, see the link below.

Thank you for saying "Take your time, no need to rush." Because there are so many adverts saying learn in 5 min or 5 days or some rubbish like that. Also how many times do we see that dreaded word "Hack" being used..... Learning properly takes TIME.
Couldn't''t agree with you more Andy
Wonderful video.

Joe what is the name of the first song by Robert Johnson? Tab?
Rambling on my mind, link to lesson below, no tabs for that one, two part lesson, that should be all you need. Tabs for other over on my patreon page, be good to have you over there Rivs, take care
@@JoeMurphysGuitarlessons - thanks when I went to the video I was sure Ramblin Man was in open E
It is Rambling on my mind not Rambling man
!! 1/2 way thru trying to Tune my individual Strings to his, realize he Tunes bottom to Top! (of course, official String Order but for Dyslexics, challenging!) but I do appreciate I had some reference point to Tune my Strings with.

Nice video. I am struggling. I used to play almost exclusively finger picking. I had a mini stroke, thank God it was not a full on stroke, and I don't have good control of the right hand. But I'm not giving up and using a 12 string Martin to increase strength and I love the sound.
Thanks for posting Ted The 12 string has a great sound well done to you for persevering and sticking with it. I wish you great success and I’m sure that you will get much enjoyment during your recovery. Just in case you’re interested, I have lots of fingernail content over on my Patreon page with all ranges covered from very basic up to advanced www.patreon.com/joesguitarlessons all the very best.
Turns out I see the links work fine on my laptop but not on my phone - weird - anyway, love your approach - keep up the good works.
Thanks so much
You are very welcome Katy
I came here to learn but that Ever seen peaches was fire! 🤘
Thanks Bruce
solid - subbed - considering how many online lessons there are - even more credit is due for this one
Thanks 🙏
What I noticed as a newbie is that Open E open G open D have similar Chords. I mean if you think about it you just have the same shapes, Across the fret board I should say.
Great lesson ---at 7:35 --suddenly you sport a green slide? glass ? or steel ----? What can we use if we don't have slide ?
Tab will show that xtra fretted note
Enjoying your videos and playing around with the ideas - only thing I don’t see are the references to links don’t seem to be popping up. Thanks
Thanks for posting Frank, everything seems to be working my end ? So not sure why you are not getting pop ups, anyways all links are also in description
great lesson am I right thinking if yo capo at the 2nd fret you change it to open E tuning and can use the same chord shapes, just like you would use the capo in standard tuning?
Correct Andrew 👍
“for wannabe fingerpickers”. Perfect-that’s me! 😅
is the the tuning used by Stephen Stills of "Wasted on the Way"?
Great stuff. Which Martin model are you playing ?
D35
Is this tuning also true to none blues songs? Do they have same chords to standard tuning?
Could I play calypso with this tuning?
Hey Joe, considering you are in Open D, have you thought about doing a Both Sides Now lesson?
Never heard of it Mark
Great video! Did Robert Johnson always play in open D?
No he played in different tunings
How are you muting the lowest string when doing the shuffle? Like... It's a chop, so the string isn't supposed to ring out. So... How do you mute it?
Practice
Obviously this is the tuning of Clapton's blues songs?
I love open d chuning , I practice it after my lunch, chuna fish samich.
what are the cords you are using in this
I am playing lots of different chords Frank
Oh,man! You had to throw in a barre…..great! But I no can do….😢
Why not ?
Hang on --basic shuffle is straight forward --but suddenly at 3:45 ---you add another higher note--cannot see how you finger or do this ?
Carl I said what I did which is an upstroke
Waw
Hi Joe, Thanks for this lesson. I went to your lesson on "Rambling on my Mind" you referred to, but it is in Open E. Do you have this lesson in Open D? Thanks a lot.
Capo 2nd fret takes you to open E
@@JoeMurphysGuitarlessons Yes. Thanks a lot. I should have figure it how, man. Have a great day.
Fretted extra note ---not upstroke --you added a extra fretted note --cannot see --hidden by your fingers ----never mind ---I/ll figure it out if you have tab -----
When you play "I'm so glad ---cannot see what frets u use -------needs TAB !
Thanks Carl, for taking the time to comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. just in case you are interested i have a patreon page where i have lots of exclusive content. here is link www.patreon.com/joesguitarlessons
So open D for beginners -----ok ---but slide ?--little finger ?
