ACKEE. The new SUPERFOOD! Delicious and Deadly.

  • Here is the full story of ACKEE and what happens when you eat the most DEADLY fruit on Earth.
    Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica. It is known to be one of the most deadly fruits on Earth, and fresh Ackees are even banned in the US because they are considered poisonous.
    Even some Jamaicans believe that if you eat raw ackee you might die, because that's what they've been told since childhood. Today we're going to cook national Jamaican breakfast, which is Ackee and Saltfish and I'd like to share why the rest of the world should start enjoying Ackee.

    Just for those who don't know, ackee & saltfish doesn't need any powdered seasonings on it, salt and black pepper do just fine with the vegetable seasoning such as onions, scallion and such. To be honest even the black pepper is optional especially since u already hv the scotch bonnet pepper. This therefore means that Mike's special blend was optional, it isn't a necessary ingredient so for those who might want to try preparing this dish u don't really need to add any other powder seasoning other than salt (and or) black pepper.

      Kyafi, I always stress that when it comes to cooking, it all boils down to a matter of personal preference...everyone does it to their liking. There is a basic way to make any dish, but it's not set in stone that you can't add a little bit of this and a little bit of that to suit your taste.

      Hopefully UA-cam will keep my comment up. I have seen numerous ackee trees in Miami. It seems as though the residents who have them, are not in a hurry to pick them, and use them. Once I also got a little seedling from a gentleman. A Jamaican neighbor in Miami, I brought it to Tampa, but it did not survive. Possibly because I didn't know or have the time to care for it, to nurture it. So it didn't survive. I have a friend here in Tampa, that grows it in her backyard. I get it twice a year at least, from her.

    This is why i always watch your videos with an open mind. You never fail me yet.
    What you said about it not being poisonous is true but im going to add to that a bit.
    One of the main reasons why you hear many people say its poisonous is because of unscrupulous people who pick green/young ackee and slit it open and sell it when its extra poisonous sometimes they will mix it with the open one to fool you. So im sure you have heard to never buy force open ackee those are the deadly ones. Thats why you hear that its just precaution and why people have their own vendors they buy ackee from.

      Yep, you're absolutely right! And one more thing - sometimes people fail to see the tiny black seeds in "baby ackee" and they get into food. However, these cases are quite rare. Most serious cases come from various countries in West Africa, where ackee isn't eaten, but children there sometimes pick them unripe or eat the seeds unfortunately.

      Troven, one should never buy shelled ackee. It is very risky. Always buy ackee in the opened pods and have the vendor shell and bag them while you wait. Avoid vendors who sell shelled, bagged ackee, or shelled ackee that they then bag and weigh. You want to always buy unshelled ackee by the dozen, not shelled ones by the pound.

My parents yard, my childhood home also had several ackee trees with branches hanging out on the sidewalk and in one of the neighbor's yard, thus my family were not the only one partaking of it. Thank you for putting out there the myths vs. facts and going as far as demonstrating/ debunking one of the myth😀😃( that was funny😁🤣😂). God Bless you. I think kids should learn the truth about whatever from early on in life if we want to de-spell myths. I learned all i need to know about Ackee from the age of 6 onwards. How to climb the tree, pick the fruits, clean them, spread the seeds to grow new plants and so much more. I taste raw ackee a few times but didn't really like it, however, I know a 4 years old girl who loves to eat raw ackee and never once mistakenly tried to eat the unfit fruits. This is is because she was educated on what is good and what was not from very early. By telling your kids that the raw ackee is poisoned, they will tell a friend who will tell a friend which continue to spread the rumors that we are here trying to get rid of.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  3 роки тому +9

      It's true, but think of it this way: you tell your child the truth and he/she will eat raw ackee safely, BUT then tell another child that it's ok to eat raw ackee "see, I do it and it's ok!", but will not explain the details - that kid tells other kid.. and risk is that some child would end up eating unripe ackee. I personally think that it's better to teach the truth at start, but it has to be done properly, so the child won't spread the info with other kids.

You drive up through Fern Gully to get there and it's right around the corner from the Walkerswood jerk seasoning factory, on the right hand side going towards Moneague. On the last Sunday of each month they have an all you can eat breakfast buffet.
      The cost was around $1,800 at the time I went there, if my memory serves me correctly. I'll drop the link below so you can contact them for info if you want. Man that experience really brought me back to my childhood days with the corned pork and the chocolate tea with that zest of nutmeg in it.
      The serving portion wasn't worth the money, but the quality of the food and the experience were. It's not like the typical all you can eat buffet like I'm used to here in Florida at the Chinese all you can eat buffets though. You don't serve yourself. There are servers who put what you want on your plate as you go down the line, and you cannot go back for seconds. Idk why they really call it "all you can eat" by doing that, but it is what it is, however, the food was really good and the type of menu was unexpected and surprisingly delicious.
      Everytime I visit home I always take a run up there to eat, but it was only once I attended the breakfast buffet. Over the years they have increased their prices and cut back on their serving sizes of their regular meals and everything is not available every day.
