You've done a great job and provide a wealth of useful information in your Engineering Explained series Jason. Thank you for your efforts! I would like to contribute to this informative video with a few small suggestions to add to this episode. The bulk of these suggestions apply to pretty much any car that uses a spin-on/canister style filter, and generally applies to cars (mostly German) that use filter cartridge inserts. There are also a couple S2000 specific points added as well. The first suggestion is to pre-fill the filter with oil prior to installation. Spin-on filters are equipped with an anti-drain-back valve, which allows you to at least partially fill the filter with oil prior to installing it on the car. On your S2000 (as your video shows) the oil filter is mounted at a 90 degree angle to the block, with the resultant angle being approximately 78 degrees to the vertical (I personally own 2 AP1s). Despite this orientation, you can fill the Honda PCX filter with about 1/3 quart of oil without oil spilling out of the filter during installation. Other cars, like some small block Chevrolet V8s for example, allow you to completely fill the filter prior to installation due to the vertical orientation of the filter. With regard to cartridge insert style filters (such as on my BMW 335D) you can fill the filter reservoir at the time of filter replacement. The advantages of pre-filling an oil filter are obvious: you prevent momentary oil starvation during the initial engine start-up after changing oil. When the filter is dry, not only does your oil system have to displace the air in the filter with oil - the dry filter media will resist flow more than a wet filter media. In reality the starvation may only about 4-5 seconds when the filter is dry - but over the life of the car, this can add up to significant and avoidable wear. Given your project car - a Honda S2000, I think it's worth mentioning that it's critical that S2000 owners only use the OEM Honda PCX filters. That filter is specifically designed for the S2000 due to the design of the VTEC system. Most of the design difference is in the bypass valve in the filter - in that the filter is designed to accept and handle significantly higher pressures than a conventional filter. The oil pump in the S2000 is actually capable of supplying lubrication sufficient for a V12 engine. The old school VTEC system in the S2000 is brute force in nature. When the car goes into VTEC, it's not unlike creating a massive oil leak under the valve cover, because there are no seals around the pistons in the primary rockers that lock in the secondary rockers under VTEC. The only way to keep this deliberate leakage from starving other parts of the engine of oil is to have an oil pump capable of flowing a massive volume of oil - under high pressures. You never want to skimp on filters - but that is especially true for the S2000. Honda most certainly didn't, and the PCX-004 filter the only filter specified for the S2000 - and the only car that uses that filter. Every other Honda uses one filter - a single filter for numerous engine types. That tells you something. Last notes: always use a fresh crush-washer. Honda uses aluminum, and some manufacturers use copper alloy - both of which can be recycled. Aftermarket magnetic drain plugs are not only widely available, they are highly advisable and can help prevent engine damage in certain circumstances. There are also powerful magnetic sleeves that attach to spin-on filters, and are designed to help trap ferrous particles in the filter itself. Both items are not too expensive and well worth the investment. The last suggestion is that I would strongly advise AGAINST using additives like PTFE (and other snake oil products), as they can lead to serious and expensive engine damage. A good quality synthetic oil along with a high quality filter is all you will ever need to put in the crankcase.
You should do a video on acoustic dynamics and why different engines sound the way they do! That would be super cool. Boxer engines, VR6 engines, V6 vs V8 vs V12, I4 vs I6, rotary, flat vs inline, etc. Explain why displacement changes sounds, as well as exhaust pressure, as well as firing frequency and crank revolutions. It gets in to crazy Fourier Transformations and thousands of factors. I'm finishing my Biochemistry degree, and a musician, but also a devoted car guy for life. You have a great head about you and I would love to see you delve into it. That would be a super cool video
I assume you were pouring the oil like that for the product shot, but for those who don't know, pouring front the side of the container releases the air lock and makes for a smooth pour.
There are people who will complain about the way I put my shoes on. People get quite caught up in pedantry - that's my point here. If you want to pour your oil in your car a different way, go for it. I made no mess. The oil ended up in the car. It's silly to debate this haha.
A2892Z He could have held the jug sideways if he took a moment to change camera angle, then it would not glug, the logo would be visible and everyone would be happy.
The correct way to hold an oil container is with the pour spout up. Totally opposite of the way he is holding it. Unless of course your sponsor wants his name visible! In that case, Pennzoil should print the label accordingly. Congrats on approaching 1 million subscribers!
If you want to make future oil changes easier, you can install a Fumoto quarter turn valve in place of the drain plug. I have a video on it on my channel. I now just attach a tube to the valve and stick the other end in the waste container. It is extra easy on my Outback because the oil filter is on top of the engine.
Just hit a million and two subs on a video where an engineer changes engine oil. congrats. You could have poured the oil correctly and taught some folks a lesson though.
***** No, car enthusiasts tend to do something like this in general. Also what is the problem, if you have a torque wrench lying around: why not using it where it is needed and avoid the risk of doing it wrong by simply using the correct tool?
For such a short video, Jason covered so much. A couple points I'd like to add. You said to 'crack' the oil cap to help the draining. Why not take it completely off to allow a greater inflow of air? Secondly, I put a big plastic bag under the drain pan because, as much as I think I have it lined up, the oil often shoots out and misses the pan to some extent. I buy these huge plastic lawn bags from my local True Value which cover so much area under the car. I also use them as drop cloths when painting. Great work, Jason.
Jason - Awesome content as usual. I've had a 2003 S2000 since new. Now with 32K miles. Since I don't trust the dealership to do the service, your videos are fantastic. Please keep the camera rolling when you do other maintenance and improvements on you AP1!
A few tips: 1 Add fresh oil to new filter so as not to starve engine on start up 2 lower car after fresh oil added and car has run for a few minutes and you ensured all is is well 3 Hold new oil jug horizontally to avoid the oil glug glug when pouring into filler. Cheers
WELL DONE ON 1 MILLION (almost). I've been here since 400k and have loved the videos, although I must admit, I haven't always agreed with certain opinions haha.
Last thing I do is record date, oil, mileage of vehicle in a log in my garage. Good reference to have. I should mention that on my channel as well. Thx for the vid!
What about putting a little fresh oil into the new oil filter as well? I heard it helps the oil flow through the filter faster so that the engine isn't dry.
Good video! Don't think an oil change is something anyone should have to pay for when they can easily do it themselves. Nice S2000 as well!! Just reviewed one for my channel and those things are sweet!
The Tool Shed I only pay $29 canadian to get my oil change but I provide my own oil and filter, only reason I let someone do it for me it's because of my busy schedule and I only get sundays off so.
In your case, it makes perfect sense even though I would love to spend my day off under my car lol Sadly though, a lot of people simply don't even know what kind of oil and filter to buy which can be easily found.
I understand that opportunity cost is probably a big factor for a lot of people however.. 1. Not every makes enough think that way 2. You're watching a video titled, "how to change the oil..." which implies you have some interest in how to DIY. 3. Most people can find time in their day if it is something they WANT to do. I believe it comes down to lack of knowledge and laziness like you said not so much time. If you don't believe me, look at what time your local oil change shop is busiest.. Chances are its weekends when the average person isn't working anyway.
Text book. Beautiful explanation, proper order of jobs. Espesially the torque wrench part. It's so important and yet I doubt if mechanics use it on drain plugs. Also, after changing my oil, I do a second trip of the same length as the "heat up" trip, so that the new oil gets a good penetration in the whole engine, just to be on the safe side. Ofcourse if you happen to go on a road trip after changing the oil, that's even better. Any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below.
Be very careful when rubbing oil on certain filters as you can most certainly slice your finger open on the metal if not paying attention or being to "enthusiastic" about your oil application. Don't hate I was 19 and my finger may have slipped. I'm sure blood is a great rubber lubricant. Also double check any time you have to have a shop or somewhere like Wal-Mart change your oil. I was desperate one time and had Wal-Mart change the oil on my Civic. I was moving to NC from TX and after getting and driving a bit I had feeling to check my oil (car wasn't running odd at all) and there was absolutely no oil on the dipstick. They had put the filter on wrong and the oil had been leaking out. Thank God the motor in the 01 Civic was like a tank. p.s. congrats on 1mil soon. Your channel has grown so fast so quickly lately and you deserve it.
When pouring liquids from containers shaped like that Oil bottle, ult it rotated 180 deg on the vertical axis (drain higher, handle lower) This will ease the liquid air exchange and there will be no blurps.
I put an oil drain valve on my s2000. I throw an oil pan under the car, reach into the engine bay, and flip a switch. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to make sure it is done draining and then add a little bit of new oil to flush things out. I've had it on the car for 120,000 miles and it's been fantastic. Makes oil changes a breeze.
i have this valve and do exactly as you do. the only gripe i have is that the valve reaches up into the oil reservoir ie. won't let as much oil drain out. thought about sawing some of it off to compensate.
Just a suggestion: It's best to turn the bottle of oil to the side or the opposite direction from which you did. This will prevent the fluctuations in flow as air can more easily flow to the rear of the bottle. Using this method and understanding where the oil will hit when coming out helps to reduce any spills.
If you move your drip pan before replacing your drain plug it's going to keep dripping on your floor. I'd reinstall the drain bolt in right away so you don't forget. Or get a second pan. As UA-camr Mod MINI has suggested, if you remove your oil cap and move it to somewhere where you can't miss it, like right next to the hood latch, it will stop you from shutting the hood without remembering to refill the oil. This happens a lot when you've planned to do ten other jobs while you've got the car in the air, but you put off filling the oil in until last. Same thing with the drain plug: if you leave it lying there, you might forget it. Don't laugh; it happens. Put it on top of your new oil bottle, or in your funnel, so you can't refill the oil without seeing the drain plug. If you're using a clicker torque wrench, stop after it clicks once. If you keep clicking it, you're adding more torque. Maybe not enough to matter, but if you don't care that much about accuracy, save money and don't buy a torque wrench. I always put in magnetic drain plugs. The benefit might be infinitesimal but maybe not.
Penzoil ultra platinum in my opinion, exceeds and out performs other oils I have used. I use to use just platinum then I switched to ultra platinum and I must say the ultra platinum has a very cool feature in which the oil cools down faster than the others. Also I noticed a more smooth engine noise.
Awesome video! Quick tip for next time, if you tilt the oil on its side to put into the funnel, it will be a lot smoother from the start so you don't any possible spillage. Congrats on almost a million subs!
Hi! First of all congrats for the great channel you run, I´ve been whatching your videos for a wile and I´ve learned a lot. You should make a video about Belleville washer and balde anti roll bar systems used in racecars!
I always try and put as much oil in the filter before fitting it to prevent running dry for a couple of seconds. That 10w30 is going to be straight out your exhaust😉
In the rare case if your oil filter is mounted vertically to the engine, you can pre-fill the oil filter with some new oil so that it can circulate the engine faster upon the first start-up.
Regardless if you don't own the same vehicle, the same concept applies. You'd be surprised of how many people out there who don't even know the first step to changing their oil, so they waste more money going to a lube shop instead.
I would recommend removing the oil filler cap first. I've encountered a time or two where I drained it before unscrewing the oil filler cap and realizing that I'm unable to remove it because of corrosion or the cap breaking or just plain being stuck. This might affect people with one car and will need to rely on someone else to help them pick up a new one, leaving them stranded.
Engineering Explained - Please do a video on the best oil filters. Over the years, I've had a few with manufacturer's defects, including one today that had a bad thread and wouldn't screw onto the engine. I've also had a filter that had a bad crimp at the housing case and it spewed oil everywhere when the car was started. Thanks!
@ Jason, Engineering Explained If you install a reputable oil drain valve (i.e. Fumoto), you no longer need to jack up the car to perform the oil change, provided you have a low-profile drain. All procedure can be done from the top. Simply slide the drain pan, drain existing oil (using the valve), twist off oil filter, install new oil filter, fill up with new oil, PROFIT!
You should turn the oil jug sideways to pour. That would let you get the jug closer to funnel and pour with out gurgling the oil. The pour would be smoother. Also, raise the front of car higher and right side higher to get more oil out of pan.
David G S2000's have an issue with CMC's and CSC's. If you don't frequently change the fluids with brake fluid, it makes a noticeable difference in shifter feel. Instead of commenting on a car you hadn't work on, you should do some research about S2000 clutch master/slave cylinders failing.
Leandro Arce I split time between North Georgia central North Carolina and DFW, Texas. I have not had any problem finding it in either state. Walmart usually has the best price viscosity selection and the most inventory. Ask the manager at your local Walmart to start stocking it for you, Little known fact, but Walmart sells more Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Rotella and Mobil-1 than ary other US retailer.
patw52pb1 You know what, I'm definitely taking your advice, hopefully they can start stocking the oil again. And true, in walmart they have the cheapest price ever. Thanks.
I don't know about ultra premium, but I have had bad luck with Penzoil. Quaker State and Castrol seem to function better over the life of the oil. Speaking of, could you do a test for the various oil brands?
Hello! I have a 2008 and am really happy about this series. Why did you not use the recommended 5 weight oil? Also, I want to keep my car stock but I Autocross and track it. Because of your performance video, aggressive tires are on my list for spring. I appreciate any info from you regarding improving performance while keeping the car as stock as possible....thanks.
If you put the opening of the 5 quart oil jug at the top instead of the bottom then when you start refilling, the jug will not go glug glug glug and get oil all over your engine and floor. The oil will start and flow smoothly from the jug.
I'd say you should add oil while periodically checking the dipstick, rather than by the theoretical capacity, because some oil remains in the engine even after draining. This prevents overfilling.
Do you plan on lowering the s2k? It would be interesting to see the engineering advantages of lowering the center of gravity to affect lap times or perceived feel vs. realistic ground clearance. Hellaflush cars corner pretty flat by their crazy cambered out and low nature, but how much lowering can really make a difference to the driver while maintaining practicality? Happy 1m!!!
Jason, thank you for this video. At the 2:34 second mark, I noticed that your tire treads aren't facing the correct direction. For your safety, please correct this as soon as possible. Thank you.
Omair Khanzada 1:00 I think it's an asymmetric tread pattern not a directional one, it's a bit deceiving but asymmetric doesn't matter which way they go. My Honda's last set of tyres were very similar and looked like they were running backwards on one side but it didn't matter, there was no outside/inside marks on the tyre
idk how to message you except in the comments. I was wondering if you could do a video on aftercoolers for supercharger. I am not aware of a video on this.
Can you do a video on "diesel chip tuning units"? How can they say more power, less consumption? I get the more power but not the lower consumption I've also heard that some of these boxes manipulates the cars software and so displaying false fuel consumption figures.
I think it just needs to be known that this won't happen simultaneously. When you floor it, you'll use more fuel, regardless. When you're light on the throttle, it may tweak the A/F ratio for higher efficiency.
This is 1 car I want to own in my life. Love the chassis and the F20C engine. Great video!
I just chuck my old oil container on my neightbor's yard.
dinkleberg...
Kevin the Canadian haha same here , i just drain it late at night into my neighbors backyard
Your comment just made my day
LordWalrus Im glad i can finally make someones day by telling the truth
Kevin the Canadian LMAO
I read the title as $2000 oil change and I was like what
Same! Was waiting for the reacharound.
haha
john murray can u even read

Did you ever think you could be at a million..? Probably started as fun... And boom! Great job!
Bro he got almost 3million subs xD
after watching chris fix, I've become an expert at oil changing, it's like Changing a baby's diaper, messy work but it has to be done.
chris fix ftw !!!
It's even easier with a oil pan valve. The residual oil in the filter is annoying.
Make sure you change the blinker fluid.
Alex Gonzalez also add blue Kool aid to your radiator to insure the maximum cooling capability
I love the blue Kool aid.
Alex Gonzalez also inflate tyres with Helium. Helium is much lighter than air and so it will make the car lighter as well
Use Hydrogen gas. Even better

Haha I've never really understood why people care about this. If the oil makes it in the engine, it's all good. That's why I used a funnel. 👍
+Engineering Explained Well, some of us are strange and hate cleaning up engine oil spills, so we employ a technique that... does not spill.
Larry But that's why you have a big ass funnel. And maybe I might like the glug glug glug...
There are people who will complain about the way I put my shoes on. People get quite caught up in pedantry - that's my point here. If you want to pour your oil in your car a different way, go for it. I made no mess. The oil ended up in the car. It's silly to debate this haha.

only person that uses a torque wrench to tighten drain plug lmao
Nope!
*****
No, car enthusiasts tend to do something like this in general. Also what is the problem, if you have a torque wrench lying around: why not using it where it is needed and avoid the risk of doing it wrong by simply using the correct tool?
I do. At work and at home. It's so easy to destroy the threads on sumps and they're a nasty job to replace.
Any aircraft mechanic will do the same. Each bolt has its own torque value on an aircraft, that tell you how important it is.
For such a short video, Jason covered so much. A couple points I'd like to add. You said to 'crack' the oil cap to help the draining. Why not take it completely off to allow a greater inflow of air? i have this valve and do exactly as you do. the only gripe i have is that the valve reaches up into the oil reservoir ie. won't let as much oil drain out. thought about sawing some of it off to compensate.

Happy Holidays!
1 Million sub request: You have to say "Hello (Name here) and welcome!" To every subscriber.
CONGRATS for 1mil subs!
Hi! First of all congrats for the great channel you run, I´ve been whatching your videos for a wile and I´ve learned a lot.
You should make a video about Belleville washer and balde anti roll bar systems used in racecars!
How the hell did you go from like 70,000 subs to 1 million in the space of a few years? Madness
Almost 1 million subscribers!
I always try and put as much oil in the filter before fitting it to prevent running dry for a couple of seconds. That 10w30 is going to be straight out your exhaust😉
A MILLI A MILLI! CONGRATS! :D
I read that thumbnail as $2000 oil change at first haha
Thankfully no, the oil is like 27 bucks haha.
In the rare case if your oil filter is mounted vertically to the engine, you can pre-fill the oil filter with some new oil so that it can circulate the engine faster upon the first start-up.
when that vtec kicks in yo!!!
i just watched a video on how to change oil in a car i don't own. hmmm.
Regardless if you don't own the same vehicle, the same concept applies. You'd be surprised of how many people out there who don't even know the first step to changing their oil, so they waste more money going to a lube shop instead.
especially since you drive a 1998 honda civic LX model with vTEC.
why even bother changing the oil when you can buy exterior accent lights!!
Carl James lame joke was lame
999,961 subscribers !! Good job, so close ;)
If you don't have such a pro oil container as Jason, you can cut a big hole into the side of an old oil bottle. Works perfectly, doesn't cost a dime.
Thanks!
congrats on a million subs! (: #goldplaybuttonhype
WOOOHOOO!!! :D
Way to go man!
congrats!!!
Well deserved I might add.
Congrats!
Since it calls for 10-30 could one not use 5-30 or 0-30 for better cold start protection while maintaining hot temp protections.
@ Jason, Engineering Explained
If you install a reputable oil drain valve (i.e.
PCX filter! Good man!!
You should turn the oil jug sideways to pour. That would let you get the jug closer to funnel and pour with out gurgling the oil. The pour would be smoother. Also, raise the front of car higher and right side higher to get more oil out of pan.
It's important to fill the new oil filter halfway with oil to prevent any starvation during start up.
You should change your clutch master cylinder fluid every time you change the oil. It makes shifting so much better.
David G S2000's have an issue with CMC's and CSC's. If you don't frequently change the fluids with brake fluid, it makes a noticeable difference in shifter feel. Instead of commenting on a car you hadn't work on, you should do some research about S2000 clutch master/slave cylinders failing.
We're supposed to change the oil in our vehicles?!
this video is fake, you just really need to put some fuel.
You're not supposed to change S2000s oil. They burn a quart a month so the oil will always be fresh.
Have you ever talked to pennzoil EE? As to why they stoped selling Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in stores, and only in Amazon very expensive?
In the US I have no problem finding or buying Pennzoil Ultra Platinum at Pep Boys, O'Reillys, Walmart, Advance, AutoZone and even Krogers Grocery.
patw52pb1 I live in SC, and can't find it anywhere locally, what part of the US you live?
Leandro Arce
I split time between North Georgia central North Carolina and DFW, Texas.
I have not had any problem finding it in either state.
Walmart usually has the best price viscosity selection and the most inventory.
Ask the manager at your local Walmart to start stocking it for you,
Little known fact, but Walmart sells more Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Rotella and Mobil-1 than ary other US retailer.
patw52pb1 You know what, I'm definitely taking your advice, hopefully they can start stocking the oil again. And true, in walmart they have the cheapest price ever. Thanks.
Leandro Arce
You are welcome, good luck finding your product.
Flip the bottle for the side for less wobble with the oil coming out.
It amazes me how many people don't know to do this...
He's getting paid to show the oil. It's acceptable.
I don't know about ultra premium, but I have had bad luck with Penzoil. Quaker State and Castrol seem to function better over the life of the oil.
Speaking of, could you do a test for the various oil brands?
Can you do a video on wether it is good to skip gears going up or down in a car with a manual transmission.
you should do a video on cutting your oil filter open to show how to inspect for metal flakes.
Next time try to turn the bottle by 90 degrees for easier flow of the oil while pouring it :) BTW. GJ!
Congrats on the sponsor, screw the tossers saying sellout 😂
Hi, whats the best way to jack up the S2000? any chance of a video?
You were on the Drivetribe revealing video!
If you put the opening of the 5 quart oil jug at the top instead of the bottom then when you start refilling, the jug will not go glug glug glug and get oil all over your engine and floor. The oil will start and flow smoothly from the jug.
Damn almost 1 million subscribers!
Happy 1m!!!
Can you make a video, with all oil brands? wich is better?... an so on
Jason, thank you for this video. At the 2:34 second mark, I noticed that your tire treads aren't facing the correct direction. For your safety, please correct this as soon as possible.
Thank you.
i agree, it is very dangerous
Omair Khanzada 1:00 I think it's an asymmetric tread pattern not a directional one, it's a bit deceiving but asymmetric doesn't matter which way they go. My Honda's last set of tyres were very similar and looked like they were running backwards on one side but it didn't matter, there was no outside/inside marks on the tyre
What is your oppinion on fill up oil filter (with oil) befor installing the new filter. We do this to avoid the dry strat.
idk how to message you except in the comments. I was wondering if you could do a video on aftercoolers for supercharger. I am not aware of a video on this.
SO CLOSE TO 1000000
Great video! :)
What about putting oil inside the oil filter before screwing it?
Lachezar Lechev Yea I was always taught to put some new oil in filter b4 screwing back... I really wonder if it's actually necessary
Well on my previous car was sideways and I didn't had problem to put just a little bit. So what's the right way after all?
