Guthrie Govan presented a superb clinic for Victory Amplification in June 2014. This video contains highlights from his performance, plus interview footage with Guthrie and Martin Kidd, chief designer for Victory Amps. Daniel Steinhardt of TheGigRig also explains how the four amps are connected up for the performance.
During the clinic, Guthrie played four Victory amps: V10 The Baron, V30 The Countess, V50 The Earl and V100.
All the main guitar parts that you hear and see Guthrie playing were recorded live on the night, using one Shure SM57 and one SE R1 ribbon mic. There are no additional drive or distortion pedals, and no messing or fixing of the audio. It's just Guthrie's guitar, played live on the night, over Guthrie's own backing arrangements to his tracks: Sevens, Wonderful Slippery Thing, Waves and Ner Ner. These tracks are from Guthrie's album Erotic Cakes.

More than anything this video reminds me of one very important fact. Whether you are Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King or any other celebrated guitarist. Without the dedication and hard work of the engineers and designers who produce the amplification, effects and instruments, people like Martin Kidd, then there wouldn't be the music we love (regardless of genre or style). Hats off to all the engineers over the years they are the true unsung heroes of rock.
@Pete Cockcroft umm ok
Never plays a song the same way twice. Always awesome
That’s right... and let’s be honest, this is one of the best versions of Waves (even tho it’s chopped!)
best guitarist alive
dlees AND HE'S really very FAST !!!
dlees saw him live with his Aristocrat buddies. Left after an hour. Was awesome. Brain went into Overload. Listen to him in short bursts. It is like being allowed to look at the equation of the universe. I am but a mere mortal.
Why? Because he's fast?
@@classicartfoundation639 No. He's got huge chops maybe the best in the scene. What makes him the best is the combination of sheer knowledge, musicality and technicality. He hears the music he wants to play in his head and he instantly transfers it to his instrument without facing any technical or musical barriers. He's as complete as a musician can get on one instrument.
Dead or alive
What an amazing player, he's so controlled and fluid, when he goes for a shred he manages to keep it musical and still has feel, really amazing to watch
Guthrie wrote Waves in his early twenties. TWENTIES!!
Brian Dennehy when he was 19 actually!
AnilZonderPunt Madness!
The arpeggios are so clean. I wouldn't normally go for this style but this man is amazing on the guitar, I love the dedication to the work. Stunning. Well done.
Yep..I went to this..I am in the left bottom corner of the screen and the one whistling at the end of each tune..Guthrie is just too AMAZING for words..to see him up close was just awesome.. he is funny and a gentleman and just so amazing with the guitar..wow what a night......
Guthrie's a lovely down-to-earth guy who on first appearances looks a little like 'Aqualung' until you put a guitar in his hands, then realisation rapidly sets in that appearances are deceptive and he's divinely-inspired. Daniel Steinhardt of 'TheGigRig' has an incredible channel on UA-cam, I've learned so much from him for free over the past week or so in terms of setting-up my amp and pedal-board. It's lovely to see talented, open people come together in situations like this to demonstrate quality musical equipment. Great video, thank you.
Guthrie is a very simple person, his tone is fantastic, his equipment is simple, and he is a fantastic player!!
Just discovered my new #1 favorite guitarist on the planet.. That is all.
Said the same after watching him live, I've seen many more but he pull such a high level performance so effortless it was like as of he was talking, or some other sort of second nature.
Oh my goodness...there's a run at about 14.15 going in to this epic bend. I think I just wet myself!!
Indeed.
I did on the night. Wicked evening despite it
Damn!
I literally got goosebumps all over my arms... eargasm!!
the tune he uses as intro to his tutorials?
37 people threw their guitar at the monitor and it bounced off the dislike button
+StinkMeat Counts gonna keep goin up boys....they'll drop like flies in accordance
+StinkMeat 38
+StinkMeat Or their Victory amp head...
+StinkMeat That's impossible. Even if someone threw their guitar at their monitor, it wouldn't be able to push the digital dislike button! Kappa
@@FearCycle Just pretend it was some weird shitty resistive touchscreen computer lol M
guthrie is like an oxford professor of english who turned out to be an amazing guitarist, whilst also looking like a viking warrior, a true legend.
Philosophy i think he said he would've studied had he not become a guitarist.
He actually studied English at Oxford but dropped out after a year to focus on music.
@@holliswilliams8426 this
Damn he's clean
yes, we all know he's taking a shower often
clean? that shit was filthy
***** The same can be said about your playing Sean!
RidvanDuzey aww thats nice of you! :) thanks
jonathansix get out, stupid kid
Guthrie Govan should be the next Defense Against The Dark Arts Professor
He is unbelievably good and versatile for an Oxford ex-student who never took formal music lessons. I think he has more knowledge of music than most Berklee & GIT "shredders"..
Man i get freaking chills when Guthrie plays, good stuff !!
This is how 50 years of playing guitar looks like! Playing with passion of course. Hats off 👽
how can anyone dislike this...
People who have been put off playing guitar because of Guthrie's immense skill :L
People are just testing to see if the dislike button is wired up, that's all.
lol it makes me want to create a some new sweeep picking patterns and work on music even more...
This guy carries a new era of guitar playing! along with couple others..
The producers should have made a separate video without the interruptions.
Agreed, the interruptions detract from the content were all here for
The music is too loud compared to the talk audio
14:22 omg!! those slides are magical
Holy shit, I just teared up ❤
Super show; great way to get the word out. I sware that Guthrie is so musically expressive that even his West Coast Grooves Jam Trax recording sounds like a record and not a guitar lesson!
Guthrie's Guitar playing is Mind Blowing. He is the Jimi Hendrix of today. Wow
No
He's the Guthrie Govan of today.
I´ve seen sooooo many comments about his playing sooo....wow.. what a beatifull guitar :D
Guthrie's playing is scary, brilliant, breath taking, hyper musical and comical. Seems like a nice guy, too. I much prefer his tone back in the days when he was running with Cornford amps, but his playing sounds great regardless of what gear he uses.
Guthrie's playing sounds amazing as always and as far as tonally sounds wonderful through the Victory amps. Also, when he said "thank you for coming" I thought that would be a great Aristocrats song title.
Love the work of Martin in the morning... it sounds like Victory.
Everything about SuperG is Tone and Feel.... a lot of the so called greatest guitarists in the instrumental world need to take a leaf of his book. Every Note GG plays; even the fast shredding runs have feeling whereas the others just sound sterile. Absolutely blown away..... no doubt the best Musically gifted Guitarist out there. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
after watching Guthrie for several years, and being a pro player myself, I just wonder what he thinks of the negative criticism. its a shame that people are being killed in the world, and serious stuff is happening, yet we are taking a player like guthrie and slating him for just being Guthrie. he IS what he IS. he is a guitarist of great ability and musicianship, and he wants to create as much music for the people that like him, as long as he can I guess. I'm sure he's had every kind of label thrust onto him good and bad, and I bet it does get to him in some way, nobody hates to be negative, but he's not trying to convince anybody of who he is, you can see he loves playing, and surely that is enough?
Was so excited for this, thank you!
I was blown away by the clean sound of the V100. Unbelievable for an amp that cranks so well to have a clean sound like that. Guthrie's playing is probably the world standard for technical excellence at the moment, and he is very creative and musically intelligent. I haven't heard much of his music. There seems to be a lot in every piece. He's one of those players who plays "a lot of guitar" in Wes Montgomery's phrase. As a creator of great musical ideas, I wouldn't put him in the class of Joe Satriani, but listening to him is listening to a first class musical mind, that's for sure.
Damn !!! This guy has ability that defies physics. Phenomenal player and absolutely BORN to play.
I've been hooked on Guthrie's shredding escapades & slowly this Musical Genius is becoming my Guitar Guru , right next to Steve Morse !!! ... Incredible player !
Guthrie Govan is insanely FANTASTIC!!!!
Thanks for this. Hasn't been a good Guthrie upload in a while.
I dream at night about wanting to play like Guthrie.
Amazing guitar player and the amps sounds really good.
That man said it: "...Professorial knowledge of music..."
3:42: Sooooo frigging clean! 😍
That's so ridiculously insane, it's hard to wrap my brain around how good he is. Secretly trained robot?!?!?😉
I love how he speaks to the guitar when he plays :)
I think he's mouthing out the tones as he hears them in his head. This is something that jazz musicians are taught and considering how much Guthrie worships guys like Joe Pass, it would make sense that he emulates this technique.
Love the way Guthrie loses himself in his guitar when he's playing! He's gone! I want to see the entire live playing video....with no breaks please!!! Awesome!!!!
We need the whole concert please!
Congratulations for this video! I want one amplifier and one t-shirt of Victory Amplifiers! hahahaha
Amazing demo from the legend that is the govan. the only thing missing is his demo of the silverback \m/
He's doing it and we can only stand and watch!!
Guthrie is insanely good. Also great sound on this video.
Guthrie Govan is an amazing musician/guitarist. I don't like to compare guitarists as they're all different in their own ways but, if I did, I'd struggle to find anyone that would come close to Guthrie. He's quite incredible, and a lovely guy too.
14:17 and again this legendary line! \m/
who you really are ? you do have delicious taste sir. rad
He's the best guitarist of the world... Amazing *_*
He's a freaking awesome guitar player.
Wow ! great guitar 🎸 player 👍
Amazing!! Buenisimos sonidos de estos amplis y las manos del maestro increibles como siempre ;)
8:32 that's a cool run w/o picking.
Just fabulous,thx Guthrie.............
Grazie...bellissimo video
I love him, he's very humble and is THE guitar beast. Everything he says is interesting
Brilliant stuff again, despite what others seem to think. The ticking Englishman strikes again.
This guitar player is really insane!!!
Ugh they all sound fantastic! My two personal favorites are the V10 (the little combo that could) and the V100 (the Steven Wilson tone I absolutely fell in love with). I kind almost wish, for kicks, he played Chapper's Silverback. I just would love to hear how he sounds through one!
I came here to like this video! my goodness
Brilliant!
Dweezil Zappa needs to get Govan on his tour right now. I just have a feeling that if Frank saw this guy, he'd be his new "stunt guitarist" in about a quarter of a second.
GENIUS!
Ben detto joker86CJ veramente "Genius"...grazie di averlo portato all'attenzione questo bellissimo video....
Prego Riccardo Botti ... grazie di apprezzare questo video e soprattutto questo genere musicale... :))
One of the best on planet earth. No question.
One of the greatest guitar player alive!!!
greatest guitar player
and cool amps
Freaking brilliant
I would say you have my undying love for uploading this, but some of the playing was interrupted in the edit. Therefore, I shall only love you for a long time.
Pretty intense!
Govan is one of the best guitarist ever !
Guthrie is my Idol I swear love that guy!
We're not worthy, we're not worthy
dios mio, cuanto talento posee este guitarrista, amigo eres un genio de genio
guthrie always has the soft spot in his heart for kirk hammet 19:44
oh... the goosebumps at @3:27. playing guitar brings him a horrendous joy
this would make for an amazing Live DVD!!!
I'm getting that guit soon.
Best of the best.
Can we finally get just the performances with no talking.
if i ever had a gripe about something in guthrie govan i would say it was his live tone sometimes. but in this video its superb. before it was sometimes a bit dry and weak but its great here.
Man I love Waves! Sound has a lot to do with your pickups. I know some will disagree, but good pickups will make your guitar sound way different than stock pickups. A way bigger difference in sound than aftermarket speakers or even an amp. You can get this same sound by using Dimarzio pickups. A PAF Pro in the neck and a Fred in the bridge, preferably in a solid mahogany body. Classic Ibanez JS series setup. This sound is very dry and straight forward just like Joe Satriani. Or just be cool and get the amp, but don't get upset when your guitar sounds different through the amp because of your pickups!
To be fair, I do agree that the clean tone from 'Wonderful Slippery Thing' was slightley less wet (rather than dry) compared to the studio version. Still, comparing a live situation with a studio set up may be a bit unfair, cuz it probably is significantly harder to get best of both worlds (tone and the overall balance) in live situation, especially when he is supposed to be switching from 10W to 100W.
Never was a big fan of G, am now, great shredding!
Gosh I look forward to seeing him in Munich with Satriani and Vai
Beautiful musicien
Guthrie and Martin chilling at a bar. Good times
great musician
Dang that's a beautiful Souldier strap.
I LOVE THE WAY THAT EVERY TIME THE CAMERA SHOWS 'MICK' AT THE DESK, WATCHING GUTHRIE, HIS BOTTOM JAW IS ON THE FLOOR! HAHAHA
Still kicking myself that I didn't make the effort to go see him when he was in town the other week! Now only if we could get The Aristocrats to come, that would be good.
Martin Kidd seems like the nicest man in the world. Damn fine at what he does too.
Guthrie resembles a hippie from the 1960's/70's yet with both modern and vintage chops. It's like Larry Coryell meets Eddie Van Halen. Very cool! One my favorites these days.
Brasil sempre representando HU3HU3
Where can I watch that whole show with out the interview??
Anyone else hear some of the Steve's in his playing (Morse & Vai)?
Obviously he has his one thing as well.
I think he’s the best amalgamation of great players (he has them all down) and a clear, great personality of his own.
That's one badazz lil stack!!!!
EXCELENTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!0:22 most creative and unexpected solo from Godrie Godvan.
And I mean it, lol you´d never expect it
