I love the outdoors, hiking, campfires, meeting fellow campers, exploring new campgrounds and my small travel trailer the Little Guy Max makes this happen. I also camp all 4 seasons and yes… that includes winter camping! I live in Minnesota and mostly camp in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Weekend RV life in my small camper brings me joy. I am a camper at heart and loving every outdoor minute.
I can't wait to see you next Thursday!

Just wanted to point out there is a large difference between an impact driver and an impact wrench. In the video you are using an Impact DRIVER. These are meant for lighter duty tasks such as framing/decking and sinking occasional lag screws into wood. They are not intended to remove lug nuts. The Impact WRENCH however, is meant for much heavier duty applications as removing lug nuts, axle bolts, etc. The main difference is the Impact DRIVER uses the 1/4" Bit Driver vs the Impact WRENCH would have a 1/2" Anvil for sockets. (they make smaller impact wrenches too, but 1/2" is what you'd want for repeat lug nut use) If a 1/2 Impact Wrench would have been used it would have zipped those lugs right off as they offer significantly more torque. I would reccomend picking one up and bringing it on every trip, because it'll make tire changes a breeze.
Thank you… thank you so much for sharing and explaining this! That totally makes sense and your info will be helpful for others reading your comment also! 😊
Glad you got the problem solved. I installed a BAL Retract-a-spare. Easy installation and it cranks down just like a pickup truck or SUV.
We had no clue what an ordeal this “weekend project” would be, John! We also installed a BAL spare tire mount but I'm not sure what the difference between your mount is?
My worst nightmare. Knowing how to do something but not strong enough to accomplish it.
Mine too!!!!
You need a more powerful gun. I have 2 m18 impacts that have 1/2 500ft/lbs or 3/4 1200 ft/lbs respectively. I keep a 500ft/lbs impact in each car for changing flats. The 3/4 could rip the studs off if you let it. Also just torch it for a few minutes with a torch, and they will come off easy peasy. you can also coat it with a sealant spray after you put it on which will prevent the corrosion. Also when you put them on use anti seize lubricant (silver) on the threads. I use it on all vehicle lugnuts and behind the rims if they are steel especially. They also have hammer impact removal tools. You hit them head on with a hammer as the unit simultaneously rotates. The combination of forces works magic.
Thank you so much for sharing this really helpful information! 👍
Thank you, I didn't think about not being able to get it down because of the screws being stuck. Another item for my chore list. Got the "mirrors" you talked about in a pass video so easy and works perfectly.
We hadn't thought about that either! I'm glad we didn't have a flat tire! 😊 I'm so glad the mirrors worked out for you!
why are you using a 1/4" driver?
Glad you were able to correct the problem! Thanks for sharing!
I couldn't believe how difficult it was to remove the spare tire from underneath our travel trailer! Thank goodness my hubby had the insight to move it! 😊
I kept thinking about his head or arm , when that tire finally does come down !
I have a few suggestions for you: first, I'd use lug nuts instead of the flat washer. They will seat down better in the wheel well and won't distort the grove for when you actually attach it. The next suggestion is that you get a locking hitch pin and then secure it with an anti-rattle clamp. And next, based on what I see under your trailer you need to coat everything with some type of rust-oleum. You're losing metal under that thing rapidly.
Lastly, move to the southwest where the weather is warm and we don't put salt down on every road...
Warm thoughts...
Pat
Such great tips as always, Pat! Thanks for making my to-do list longer! 🤣 You’re the best!
Great, need to know, info. Thanks!
It's a good idea to do an annual check to make sure the spare tire can be removed and has enough air! 👍
Glad you got that off, what a workout. Personally I carry two spares. Goodyear 8 ply tires, 65 PSI. My camper go in the shop for it's yearly maintenance May 2. The usual maintenance roof, slide out checked, wheel bearings packed, and shackles by the springs spot welding checked.
That's so smart to take your camper in for annual maintenance, Jim! If we had perhaps we would have discovered the bolts and nuts on our spare tire were corroded! 😁
I’ve got pretty much the same set up except I sprung for a locking pin to secure the spare tire rack and a cable lock on the spare. Wouldn’t want to make it easy for someone to steal my spare and the rack! LOL
I love that you mentioned this, Michael!!!! I have an upcoming video about RV security! 😄
Great video I moved my tire 🛞 and glad I did. Thanks From Wisconsin
You are 1 step ahead of me!!! 😁👍🎉
Get an impact. Not an impact driver. That's for driving in screws
Thanks for letting me know! 😁
That tire will now dry rot….
could've been done in 2 minutes with a breaker bar.
Wow that's crazy rv company's cheep on everything . Thanks for sharing.
Who would have thought that relocating a spare tire would be this difficult?!?! I feel better now that it won't be such an ordeal to access our spare tire if we ever need to.
By moving spare further back, the weight distribution worsens to the rear of the trailer. Did you add weight to front of trailer to counter balance the shift of the spare tire location?
No we didn't but that's a good point. We stayed well below the receiver max weight.
Getting a tire pump is absolutely needed. I had Roadside Assistance come to change my tire last year and the spare was less than 30 psi. First thing I did was go to a gas station to get it where it needed to be. I'm glad you're prepared now, Randi.
Thank goodness for roadside assistance, Linda! I'm am always learning and I had no idea how fast a spare tire can lose air making it unfunctional.
Did you use an "impact wrench" or just a drill & socket? I bought an impact wrench for that purpose.
Nope... We didn't an impact wrench. Maybe that would have helped?
First thing i thought was the rattler is to small...glad you got it off..
What an ordeal.! Clever that you took it off before you needed it.
One has to wonder who designs something like that.
You may want to consider a cover now that the tire will be exposed to sun.
I couldn't believe how difficult it was to get that tire removed! Funny you mentioned a cover. I had one but the way it fastened onto the tire didn't seem secure to me so I'm going to order another one. 😁
Oh dear! Glad you moved it before you needed it.
Right!!!! 😊 There would have been no way we could have changed a tire on the side of any road if we had needed to!
Well uhh you're using the weakest "impact" wrench on the planet.. duhhh. Put a man behind an actual wrench.
I didn't know that! 🫣
