- Twenty minutes off the Puget Sound coast is an island that was the home to a state penitentiary until it closed in 2011. Now, it is used as a facility for the civil commitment of the state’s most violent sex offenders.
Residents wind up on McNeil when their prison terms have ended but a judge deems them still too dangerous for society. They’re placed indefinitely in what’s known as civil commitment - where in theory they’ll be treated until they no longer pose a threat. This could be a month or it could be forever.
It’s not an island paradise but it’s not a prison. VICE New Tonight sees what life is like for the residents.

I feel like the US is just giving them a life sentence, but don't want to make it seem like it, so they hide it using the term "therapy". One hour a month is obviously not a therapy at all.

You know what would be cheaper? Actually give these people proper medical treatment and have universal access to therapy to prevent this from happening.

I’ve been to prison. Before prison I thought to be a pedophile was like to be into having sex with dogs, incredibly rare. There are SO MANY pedophiles in prison it’s insane, and those are just the ones that got caught. It’s a very underreported crime

“Lies we tell ourselves to justify our actions” never have truer words been spoken. I was abused, I did not turn around and abuse others. People who use abuse as an excuse shouldn’t be let out. Predators harm. Innocents who have been abused strive to keep others safe.
No, everyone reacts differently to trauma. Some blame themselves and become self-destructive, others blame society and become anti-social, etc. it’s impossible to compare yourself and your situation to anyone else and theirs. That’s what gets up us to the point of believing mental illness is not real, or is self-inflicted. Pure ignorance. Do I agree that there are incurable illnesses amongst these “patients”? Absolutely. But committing them to a for-profit facility for “treatment” against their will and following the completion of the court ordered sentence for their crimes? I have a fundamental objection to that. If you want laws to lock these people up for life, then create those laws. Or, why not just start executing everyone who doesn’t conform to the current society? We can start by instituting a program of eugenics.
But ask yourself this: where do we draw the line? Are you perfect enough to survive such a culling of the human race?

Everyone is different, basing your experience for your view points shows how close-minded you are. These were children's who committed sexual offenses that they learn from their abusers. It is normal to mimic bad behavior especially in youth adults and childrens who have not fully mature their brains yet. You should actually do research before calling people Predators. I DO NOT BELIEVE that a kid doing a sexual offense on a other kid is a predator. Perhaps you could example how two teenagers who have consent sexual relationships or sexting or in this case a 13 year old and his sister-in-law are some how Predators?
Their brains are miswired. Yes, some folks simply continue an abuse cycle, but the vast majority of people suffer from a brain issue where the sex/love wires are crossed.
I can sympathize in that irs not their fault they were born that way, but when you make a decision to act on an unnatural (guess you could argue the brain wiring was *technically* natural since they were born with it 🙄) deviant desire that negatively impacts someone else's life, potentially a child's *entire* life, well it makes me seriously ponder thr concept of eugenics

I used to work at a residential centre for sex offenders and they are the most manipulative people I've ever worked with. I could easily see Justin was working the interviewer.

Being a victim of childhood sexual assault at ages 4 and 6, and again from 9-13, I think I'm crazy when a child molester says something I agree with and can respect them on a certain level. The first guy is nowhere close to being honest with himself yet. That second guy though, I respect his honesty and insight.

The amount of child preds who reoffend is staggering & there has been very little evidence to point to rehabilitation working. Idk, I'm very skeptical because if it doesn't work & the professionals make the wrong call, then it's children who pay the ultimate price.
@@sese6227 I heard that people develop these sick fantasies in their teens like 14 to 16 so if they got intervention in those ages then they would be able to get treatment about how to manage those urges and not do anything illegal. Is there a cure for this sickness no but treatment will help so that they don’t offend.
None of the guys they interviewed seemed like they actually internalize or care about the harm they committed against their victims.
Rather, it just sounded like they were parroting things that they think their parole officers would want to hear.
Ex: Justin gets emotional when recounting HIS abuse, but as soon as he begins to talk about his crime, he stops and begins to focus on himself (how he has "changed"and how he forgives "himself"). In addition, the language both Justin and the man at the end use when the interviewer addresses their crimes is dismissive. They avoid being explicit or direct.

My grandma worked as a DOC Officer for over 32 years was a level 4 sex offender specialist and was in charge to decide how likely the inmates here were gonna reoffend when possibly looking at an eventual release date - basically she was the mental health and because she had so much experience sexual offense specialist that decided what they chances of being rehabilitated on release and how likely they are to reoffend ) her word on the court was the biggest argument for release or to keep them there longer she retired at 70 this year

Rumi Q I’m not defending the guy and certainly not his behavior. I am not morally offended at the option of him being locked up for life. While that scene was incredibly uncomfortable, it’s still open to interpretation and it’s possible he simply just doesn’t have a good answer that he can self-manage his urges.
Maybe he can’t. Maybe he can. But the video footage is not enough to conclude. Maybe all the human attention isn’t enough to conclude.
Normally I'd say that child molesters should be executed, but Justin was just a child and an abuse victim himself. That doesn't excuse him, not at all, but it's something to consider.

Everytime I hear a child abuser say they've had to learn to forgive themselves, it makes me angry. Only after you have the forgiveness of every one of the children you've abused, can you begin to forgive yourself.
I say this not to take away from how horrid child abuse is... The only person you can completely control is yourself. I say that to say you have no control over whether or not someone forgives you. I 100% believe you have people who have done horrendous things that have recognized their atrocities and repented. Those same individuals have no control on whether or not the people they hurt forgives them or not. Therefore they 100% can forgive themselves before their victims do. You don't need the forgiveness of others in order to begin your own personal transformation, repentance, and healing. I can understand feeling like a child abuser is just trying to receive empathy by saying "they've had to learn to forgive themselves" this is why I specify the above for only those who have genuine remorse for what they've done not those just saying it for show.

My personal definition of forgiveness is letting go of the idea that the past can be anything different than it was. When the abused can let go of the past and move forward, the abuser can then let go and move forward. That's my take.

There is one of these facilities in my state. I agree with the public defender; if we want to lock people up beyond their sentence, then just change the laws so that sex offenders get longer sentences. Arbitrarily locking them up longer after they've served their time just seems strange. We don't retroactively keep people convicted of murder extra because we feel like it. How is this different?

If your employer hired you to do 8 hours of work for a set amount of pay, and then decided that they wanted you to stay a few more hours afterwards to do more work for the same pay, you'd cry bullshit. This is the same. If the punishment for a crime is 8 years, and 8 years are served without issue, then the debt to society is paid, full and clear. Keeping them locked up longer just because has no basis in justice.

A thief can change, an assaulter (not sexual assaulters) can change, domestic abusers can probably change too, etc. But yeah, people like this do not change, they always reoffend. They always say that they will never do it again, but then later if they weren't charged (somehow), they always either go on to abuse an actual child or fall for another decoy in the show. That depends on what kind of social work he goes in to. Obviously if he's going to work with families, he won't be allowed to. However if he's going in to social work to help drug addicts, work at prisons, or even work with sex offenders, there's no reason to not let him.

I’ve been sober for four years and I don’t really ever get tempted to drink but I’m always cautious about the environment I put myself into and the fact that when you’re an alcoholic you’re always an alcoholic. I can say that chances are I won’t ever drink again. I’ve been through some of the toughest years of my life the past four years, but through it all I didn’t relapse and I didn’t even really think about drinking. But there is always the possibility.
You seem like you're doing well. Have considered celebrating with a nice drink? That's what my brain would tell me whenever I would try to quit smoking. "Hey, you know what? If you're able to stop smoking for a month, then you're not really addicted. So go ahead! Have a cigarette!" Next thing you know, I'm smoking again.

If anybody came to a parole/release hearing and said, “oh, I’m cured, I’ll never do it again,” I would immediately reject them.

The entire point is that you need to be honest with yourself and concede to the fact that these are *not* urges that will disappear. *Pedophilia and similarly harmful deviance, especially when accompanied by antisocial personality disorder (psychopathy), is incurable and extremely dangerous to society. Similarly to addiction, it is a lifelong battle. So it does NOT evoke confidence to hear that one believes they will never reoffend.*
Yes, everybody deserves treatment/rehabilitation if possible, even the most heinous of offenders. However, there are many offenders that are not interested in getting better. They will game the system, manipulate doctors and therapists and win the trust of those around them just to have the chance to reoffend. When I see people fighting so hard for victims and then threatening the sex offenders. I think to yourself your a hypocrite. Some of these offenders were once victims of sexual abuse themselves such as the person I know personally. Was once a victim themselves and never got treatment for it but growing up never allowed to talk about it. People hush sexually problems. Eventually this victim started seeking the same attention as he did as a child because that was the only kind of love he knew. Working with this person he has learned to understand his patterns to understand his patterns was to seek love through the way he was abused and has become a better person and understands. Making their life better to deal and heal with the abuse they faced as a child. Now this person is a monster but was the victim that never got any help. This monster was once the victim your fighting for but why did he never get help for it? No one fought for his innocence. When I look at his child picture. That voice was never heard. Abuse affects people mentally. Being forced to hush because no one wants to deal with it. Some of these monsters we are talking about were once child victims and the person I know was. Barely 18. I care about this person and I know in this persons eyes you can see the abuse still lingering on. The pain of all the years suffering with a death sentence as a child and now getting another death sentence as an adult from the chance of being understood, heal hidden wounds, creating a happy chance at life, and getting a chance to be truly loved. Has been stripped from this person by those who are hardly believing that they are protecting victims. He was a victim. They aren’t trying to prevent. They aren’t studying it and people who work with sex offenders don’t see the same things the public is seeing. These aren’t all monsters. Many of them make a mistake and aren’t even sex offenders by nature at all and others have struggles that need help. They can’t find anyway to seek help. His voice of the victim he was , was never heard. Now he is the monster you want to destroy and the victim you want to fight for. Where is the justice for this victim. There is none, a child’s voice that was never heard. We forgot about him. His abuse was never heard and his story will never be told. Yet it lives one. In loving arms, one person loves him. Someone cherishes this person and that’s all the justice I need.

We need to put more sexual offenders into therapy. Many sexual offenders have been sexually abused as children. It is a heinous crime but they are mentally ill, therapy is definitely required.
Honestly, this facility kind of disgusts me. Personally I don't care whether or not they "treat" pedophiles, but to call this place a place of treatment is ridiculous.
It claims to pretty much be a rehabilitation and treatment centre, but with only an hour a *month* with one-on-one it says otherwise. Childish decorations and activities that seem more suited to teaching a 7yo than an adult male, rubber exercise balls in the classroom, it screams more "well-guarded Kindergarten" to me.

Idk man I mean one hour of one on one per month is what I used to have before money ran out. Odds are that's an issue of funding. Plus they're focussed on group therapy which is pretty much the most effective for violent offenders. And honestly? Rubber exercise balls would be great in more classrooms. I have ADHD and I feel like that sort of environment would have helped a lot in school for me. And even though these are adult males most of them were themselves victims of child abuse, likely leading to some arrested development which would make a more colourful and childlike environment very therapeutic for them. It means that one who is diagnosed, must be diagnosed before the age of 18, is manipulative, tends to break laws, has no sympathy for others, angry and erratic.
