  • The new engine in my Jaguar XJ6 is running too hot even in the middle of winter. I am seeing over 100 degrees Celsius and it's worrying. Hopefully it is just a stuck thermostat and nothing serious.

That’s a good result…. You’ve proved that it was genuinely running hot and not cooling properly… nice to know that the oil pressure has improved too as a result.

you have a great channel! i own a xj6s3 83 for over 15years now and recently i drove the car out of storage where i kept it hidden from daylight for over10 years. now is the time we can still enjoy our cars can. withing a couple of years people will blame us for our greenhouse contribution. could do a movie on all the lube points on the car, i heard some are pretty hidden. thanks and keep up the good job! i have learned a lot already.

My V12 XJ-S runs too cold in the winter. I think maybe the thermostats are no longer blocking flow to the radiator as they should when closed.
Thanks for posting these vids. You give me lots of encouragement to use an ‘87 XJ-S as my main car. 😀
You use a gasket AND Hylomar blue? Most of what I’ve read on the Jag forums says that with Hylomar you don’t need a gasket.

If you car runs too cold, it is more than likely the thermostat staying open.

hey leno uses evans in everything he owns, it massively important on the v12s as they have problems with cylinder heads getting eaten by tired antifreeze, with the amount of coolant in a v12 its not cheap but for engine longevity its probably the best in vestment you can make i bit the bullet a few years ago and havent had any coolant problems since, went to electric fans also as i have a deep mistrust of viscous fans from bad experiences

88 degrees C. is right around 190 F. I'd put an 82 degree C. stat in it myself. Cool video, kind of figured it was a thermostat issue when you described the symptoms. Good job making up a new gasket!
    Thanks, Adam!

I’ll see how it does in summer but for winter and fall an 88 degree one is nice. The heater is good and toasty

Great video! I will be converting my XJ40 to electric fans this spring and I couldn't really find what temperature setpoints that I should use. Now I know that I'll aim at 88 degrees and adjust from there. Also, I am seriously jealous of Sweden's weather. In Canada, it is -24 celcius tonight.

Why not test the thermostats in boiling a pot of water with thermometer?

  • @roysmith385
    @roysmith385 2 роки тому

I had Evans in my Triumph Stag and it ran a little warmer but I never had any issues and, of course, it doesn’t boil until about 180c so there wasn’t a problem, even though here in Spain, I’ve drove it in temps of 45c. I now have it in my Bertone X19 (mid engined) and it’s absolutely fine.
Incidentally last week I changed all the flexible pipes on the X19 between clutch and brake reservoirs and respective master cylinders (and changed them too as the car is 33 years old). I have also change the whole 2 systems to DOT5 silicone fluid. How about trying that on your new project as you are upgrading the brakes?

Nice t-shoot & fix. Wondering about the placement of the t-stat, must be very easy to get wrong, maybe there's some kind of trick to getting it positioned right the first time? Seems like a dab of sealant or something to hold it in place during assy might work?

Great video as usual! I will follow the exact process to check my thermosta next time. BTW Adam, have you ever checked the temperature at the two exhaust headers? There is always a 100 degrees difference in my 71 xj6. Say 370 vs 270 Celsius degrees front and back.

never run straight water, the dissimilar metals need the protective additives in antifreeze or horrible things will happen to your mating surfaces, antifreeze does a good job but degrades surprisingly fast so needs changing every 3 years regardless of mileage, it a electrolytic degradation evans is bloody expensive but really much much better than any antifreeze and is a one time thing also always use distilled water when mixing antifreeze as the crap that comes out of most taps should never be put in an engine , if in doubt look at the inside of a 10 year old hot water tank !!

    • @alexandrecouture2462

I once had a 2000 Toyota Celica and the previous owner topped the coolant with water only. Guess what happened at -30 celcius one day? Serious problems! In theory, using only water would be the most efficient way to transfer heat, but prestone does have additives to 1.ensure that it doesn't turn to ice and 2.ensure the engine and radiator will not rust too much.

@@LivingWithAClassic I was wondering if you had some sort of build up of sediment within the coolant passages... and by running the engine without a thermostat for a few minutes would allow some sediment or rust to be flushed out. I probably should have explained my thinking first. Enjoy your channel.
