Sweet, sweet show! Been driving my BRG/Biscuit XJ for 25 years. Finally, some love; thank you so much, Jay!! And the XK engine powered Jags to 5 (five) LeMans victories through the 1950's, not once 'in the late 60's'. The most undervalued car I've ever known. Stranded once in all these years (with a flat tire) and had to call a tow -- because the lug wrench was home in my garage.. Not kidding. Just a little TLC and they run forever. Find a nice one and keep it!!

I cant agree with Jay in comparing it to American cars of the same era. the engineering is on another level from rack and pinion steering, independent suspension with coils ( not leaf springs) four wheel disc brakes inboard at rear with anti dive, twin overhead cam engine, optional manual 4 speed with overdrive and then the safety....

agreed, but even the 6 cyl is a great car if fitted with a 5 speed manual and is uprated for fast road use.. I know a couple of UK companies that upgrade them, but leave them looking totally original.. One in particular XK restorations upgraded a friends 77coupe.. its his daily driver and puts many modern cars to shame, but apart from a manual box, vented discs and the uprated engine is totally stock..

Jay - please find & drive a mint unrestored 3.8 Mark II saloon with wire wheels and manual transmission with overdrive - to me that's the iconic old 4-door Jaguar. Years ago our family owned a 3.4 with the Borg-Warner (a toggle on the dashboard) and a Mark IX with the 3-speed automatic on the steering column. Both were wonderful to drive, but I always thought the 3.8 with manual would have been the ultimate experience. I'd be glad if you could locate one and give us a tour in it. . .
Many thanks, and for all your generosity in sharing your collection with us.

UK scrap yards in the '70s were full of Jags/Daimlers. I loved sitting in them. Walnut dash, door caps and walnut picnic tables for back seat passengers folded out from the back of the front seats. The leather seats etc and the Axminster carpets gave them a luxurious smell. Brit cars rusted badly because up until the late 60's they were wired positive earth which I'm told attracted salt from the roads in wintertime causing rust.

I had the model which preceded the XJ6 which was the 420. It had the same 4.2 ltr engine but with 20 hp more. It would cruise all day in overdrive top gear at 110 mph at 3100 rpm and in almost silence!

    • @robbo777cricket

The 20bhp more thing is a bit debatable, at least in the UK. They changed from SAE gross to DIN measurements. For example, my dad’s got a 3.8S whereas I’ve got an XJ6 and I’ve got to say my car is much faster.

Well said as always, Jay Leno. Its amazing how underappreciated these cars have been until recent years as values increase. I am sure it is reputation and experience of BL's inconsistent assembly and the vile reliability issues that plaque the Jaguar repuation to this day from the perspective of the mainstream buyer. But she knows she is pretty, and you will put up with her faults! I wish Jaguar continued this body style for another couple of decades. The engineering would have been the same for the Series III. There is an XJ40 (series III successor) model two-door that Jaguar put together in the early 1990s and is on display in the UK. And the successor to the XJ40, the X300, had a showcar called the "Daimler Corsica" that was at the time, a non-running convertible. I didn't like the X300 facelift particularly, but the Daimler Corsica is fantastic. I believe that the concern would be that a coupe version would canibalize sales of the (by then) long-in-the-tooth XJS. I am normally a four door sedan guy and go against the grain of the coupe crowd. Many two door saloons / sedans just come across as an afterthought or an economy version. This is not the case with the Jaguar saloon coupes that just mezmerize me. To me, they look altogether unique from the four door equivalent. Still, a Series III with the Kent rims would have been a killer taking everyone's breath away.

Top of the morning to you, Jay. Mr Lenno.. EXACTLY how many cars do you own? 400?? You are spot on, Jay, the coupe is the dog´s bollocks. In Britain that means it is the jewel of the friggin crown. Thanks for "Rolls Royce" quality in every upload. Trivia: Jaguar spent millions of pounds to build a spanking new paint shop at the XJ factory in Coventry. As usual it went to hell in a handbasket and nothing worked at the super modern paint shop. Two Jags execs almost had a heart attack due to all the delays, and after 6 months the Jag bosses were just over the moon if a XJ was painted all the way round in the SAME colour. Should I customize the brakes to a modern standard?? Im am not so sure. Can we open the hood? LOL You have our permission.

The XJ6 looks way more timeless (like a British muscle car, eh)? Driven the V12 XJS several times, and will never forget the luxurious feel of the interior. Seemed to need charging every time, and there was always issues with the wiring. Once it gets moving, it pulls and pulls; a classic high speed tourer. The 12 was actually a bit smoother than the inline 6; which has to be the smoothest old-style iron motor ever to survive into modern times. I believe people did V8 swaps because they were easier to get parts for and maintain.

    • @garthlundquist8316
      @garthlundquist8316 6 років тому

Michael Bullington I did several of the Jaguar V8 swaps back in the day. The Chevy small block was the most popular because it was narrower than the Ford smallblock . This really mattered in the E Type. Either American V8 could make lots more power than the Jag six and were available for a few hundred dollars used.

What a great classic cruiser and a great find! Jaguar seems to have a knack of creating something so stylish that it often looks better the older it gets. So glad that it's been kept to as close as original as you can get...

So true. When I was young and finally got my xk-e, I adored the 3.8S, and mk2, but was appalled at the mkX. Now years later I own a black/black mkX and love the style and gracious burl wood interior. It has grown on me over the years.

Another nice entry in the series! I like the episodes with the oddball cars and older vehicles best. Yeah, the high horsepower new cars are nice, but nothing beats the sight of a beautiful old car, well maintained or brought back to life. The older cars (looking at you 1936 120B) seem to possess a simplicity and an elegance that a Koenigsegg just cant match. After volunteering at the Packard Museum a while back, I gotta say that I wish Mr. Leno would show off more really early automobiles.

I had a V12, but the sedan, a 1974 XJ12L. Last year of the carburetted engines, with four Strombergs. The crossflow intake manifold alone deserved to be in an art gallery. I always that at around 95 to 100 mph on the freeway, that marvelous engine sounded like a jet aircraft turbine winding up for takeoff with that smug 12 cylinder high-pitched whine.

Easier to maintain too. Not computerised, just mechanical. I first had an '83 XJ6 (bought in the 1990s), was cheap, timing chain rattled, but it drove fine. Then an '83 XJ12, the legendarily smooth engine (but thirsty). Then a late '70s XJ. Finally a post-facelift XJS. All beautiful cars, all reliable, exceot for the XJS. You will never regret buying a '70s or mid '80s Jag. Incredibly enjoyable cars to drive and just be in. Pure therapy. 'A poor man's Rolls Royce', but I prefer them to Rollers.

Wonderful to see this appreciation of the XJC. Sir William Lyons is responsible for the classic lines of this car, and that of many others including the progenitor XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe. The XJC corrects the ergonomic problems of the earlier FHC models while preserving the purity of line and overall balance of the composition. Our family owned many Jaguar automobiles over a period of 50 years, and were able to thoroughly experience the different models and the evolution thereof. The twin fuel tank scheme dates back to the 1950 Mark 7 Saloon. One tank was known to have been used to smuggle contraband back in the day. All XJC models imported to the USA came with a black vinyl top as was the fashion of the time. To my eye the car looks much better without it. We owned a 1976 XJC, and I had the pleasure of also extensively testing the V12 version. Both were notably smooth in operation. The 6 cylinder car preferred to stay below 4500 RPM and had impressive low end torque. It wouldn’t light the tires, but was a satisfying gentleman’s express. The V12 was smoother yet, pulled strongly from any speed, but revved eagerly to 6500 rpm in stock form. Modified engines can see 8000-8500 rpm. US versions of both motors were restricted considerably from UK spec. The biggest difference with competing US cars was the sophisticated chassis. The XJ chassis was a modern European design on par with Mercedes Benz. Fully independent suspension, anti roll bars, twin rear shocks, 4 wheel disc brakes, speed rated radial tires and more were not to be found on American cars. Jay mentioned the Cadillac as competition. The 1975 Cadillac had a huge 8.2 liter/ 500 cubic inch motor but only made 210 horsepower, and was fitted to a much heavier car. I tested ( and drag raced! ) the Caddy against the 6 cylinder XJC. The Jaguar was considerably quicker, and much faster on top. The V12 cars would go 140 mph.

Not a car that you want to race BMWs with, just a great , relax and enjoy the drive car. I love mine. I feel like I am in a Bentley or Rolls ... A motorcar of great distinction ! I have the XJ6 Series 3 sedan, 1983 model, and i think it was the most beautiful sedan ever made. The XJ6C is even more beautiful. It is a wonderful car to drive, so smooth. The car is 99 % original, the exhaust system is stainless steel now, I just wish it had a 4 speed automatic transmission, it would improve the performance of the car nicely. The engine is great, just needs a better transmission. I am unanimous in that. Thanks for the great videos !
