  • Dr. Dawn Mussallem is a board-certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician at the Mayo Clinic Jacoby Center for Breast Health where she works with breast cancer patients during and after their diagnosis to heal and thrive using the pillars of lifestyle medicine alongside their conventional cancer treatments.
Dawn has many remarkable stories of patient recovery, but the biggest recovery story of all is her own. You see, in addition to being a physician, teacher, wife, and mother, Mussallem is also a cancer survivor, 2021 heart transplant recipient, and as of February 2022, she's also a marathon finisher!
It's a story you simply have to hear to believe and her passion and positivity will leave a lasting impact. Not only does she acknowledge her family and faith in this decades-long journey, but she also credits her whole foods plant-based diet with her ability to thrive and train with a renewed sense of purpose and boundless energy. It's a life force she brings both to her life and the lives of the patients she works with on a daily basis.

Oh my! What an incredible and inspiring life story! And she is the kind if person I want to be more like. She kept surprising me with each story. I cried with the transplant story, we had a son who had 3 kidney transplants starting at 6 years old. We were so thankful to the the families who gave our son life. Thank you Rip for bringing her to us.

I really like Rip's work and videos because he is so different and reasonable person and not claiming to be a guru such as the other vegan UA-camrs - I really appreciate that!
If it wasn't his work I probably won't be plant-based any longer because of those gurus which are so annoying for me and do make people to forget the main values of the diet and most important for me the health benefits for us and for our loved once.
So great job Rip and thanks for all of your efforts to present the plan - based lifestyle as something normal, accessible and healthy instead of trying to just make money from it in a ugly way!

What an incredible person. What an incredible interview. I've never felt such optimism from one person ~ how inspiring. My "baby sister" (64) is just days away from meeting her maker ~ she is dying from Glioblastoma. She had symptoms in February, 2022 and after being dismissed and misdiagnosed, she was formally diagnosed on June 16, 2022. The range of emotions one goes through as a patient and family member is enormous. Videos such as these have been presenting themselves to me at the time I am in need. Though my sister will no longer be here ~ I am alive...... WFPB for nearly nine years. Thanks again ~ Janet

I just found this podcast yesterday and it truly inspired me. I ended up in tears at the end. This was incredible to listen to. Such an inspiring story. I am certain Dawn makes everybody’s life better for just being in it . Dawn is so full of love light and gratitude. I am a nurse and I work with cardiology patients …several waiting for heart transplants and I will most definitely share this with them. I’m going to share this with family and friends as well. Thanks so much Rip for researching and finding her story as we can all learn so much from Dawn💕

Your story is so incredible because of your attitude and unwillingness to not give up. I am so inspired. Thank you for sharing your story. I sent your story to my daughter, shared it with my mother-in-law, and want to try to have 50% of your positivity.. I know you had so many hard times in your life that I don’t take glibly. Even after I listened to your story, I still don’t know how you kept working and being a Mom with such advanced physical deletion and I don’t know how you kept such a good attitude and perspective. You are truly an example of how to traverse adversity well. I will listen to your story again and probably again because it somehow gives me hope. Thank you again. I wish you the best and hope your running aspirations come true and any other aspirations that you have!!
