Sega Game Gear Games are CHEAP! But For How Long? [Retronomics]

  • The Sega Game Gear was a Nintendo Gameboy competitor and on paper better in every way. It had a bigger screen, it was in color, it had console quality games. But it was also more expensive and the screen was washed out and it ate batteries like they were candy.
In 2022 Sega Game Gear prices are fairly inexpensive, but with the Analogue Pocket reaching more and more hands, will there be a demand for physical titles now that there's a high quality portable solution?
I track 25 Game Gear Game prices in this episode of Retronomics!

Do you plan on collecting Game Gear? Do you think we'll see prices increase like the Gameboy?

Already got almost every game gear game I wanted a while ago, great little system. Shame my game gear needs new capacitors and a screen upgrade.

Can’t imagine they’ll go up much. The demand isn’t really there.

Yeah I don't think we'll bee seeing too many games go up. The prices just don't really increase as much.

Cool video. I've had a game gear since it came out and got pretty serious into collecting in the last 15 or 20 years. I have most, but not all of the games you mentioned, but I will tell you what I do have:
187 unique games + 30 second copies for 2-player w/gear to gear cable
Super 40 in 1 which includes Super Boy 2, a Mario game, as well as other games not released on SGG
5 Game Gears, one with a modded screen
Game Genie, AC Adapters, car adapter, both versions of battery pack and the carrying case.
I hope to someday have a complete SGG collection and your video informs me that it won't be too terribly expensive to do so. It really just comes down to availability, and it doesn't hurt that I got games like Fantastic Dizzy and Mega Man when I was a kid.

The issue I have with wanting to collect for my Game Gear is that almost every game is a port of Genesis games. There also seems to be no power cable for the system, and I don't want to just buy batteries a lot to play games that I can just play on consoles.
Tails' Adventure is available on the Gamecube Sonic Gems collection and in Sonic Origins. Literally no reason to spend the money on it unless you want to make it an investment.

They make usb c conversions for it now. Can even get a rechargeable battery pack that's modern. But I get your point. Console games on a small screen don't really ring the same

We need more alternatives to play the carts. Dealing with the Game Gear itself is an absolute pain in the ass.

Great discussion here as I've been curious about the potential rise in value of GG games. In the past few years it feels as if a growing interest in Sega has begun, with the Genesis/Mega Drive and then the Master System, so I've often wondered if the Game Gear would be the next point of collection. There were some really decent games on the system too so aside from rising prices, it could be a good thing if more interest is dug into the back catalog so that people can finally check out some great games they may have missed out on.

Yeah it's really interesting. You would assume that people would just migrate to the cheapest option, but that doesn't seem to be the case currently outside of the more expensive games.
I'm currently focusing on the full Lynx set. I just bought the most expensive game and it was less than $100

Some Game Gear games are master pieces…. GG Shinobi is for me the best Shinobi for instance.

Yeah they're a lot of fun. I've realized that I like platformers and there's no shortage of them on the Game Gear and Lynx. And best of all no one wants these so the games are fairly inexpensive

I have nice memories of Game Gear but honestly it's really hard to get into today. The screen quality and frame rate really hurt to enjoy a game today.

@@SuperNicktendo I don't know why is Gameboy held higher. Peagreen screen with blur, maybe because it was the first one? I don't know.

Got myself a Game Gear since I decided to collect all the Mega Man platformer titles. Good thing I got it then since the price has doubled after that. Also got a few cheaper games, but the Game Gear games are hard to find in my country.

I have collected for the Game Gear and I do not believe we will see price increases like the Gameboy. I will not be buying an Analogue Pocket. There is a Retron 5 Adapter for the Game Gear which is also a possibility for some people.

When you say Ninja Gaiden on the Game Gear is closer to the arcade, I believe you are actually thinking of the Atari Lynx. The Game Gear version is like the Master System version and looks nothing like the arcade.

    • @4504595
      @4504595 2 роки тому

Also strange that you say Ninja Gaiden has more name recognition than Shinobi, yet you describe the Ninja Gaiden game as a "Shinobi-style" game.

If people could get a mcwill or better screen replacement the game gear could be a beast. Even if Sega were to remake it today, not the minis, that could increase demand at least… idk 4 fold?! 😹

It doesn't have the nostalgia factor and the library isn't that compelling in my opinion but it's hard to compete with Nintendo when it comes to handheld gaming.
