- Episode 204 - We finally take a look at Sega's original portable system designed to take on the GameBoy. It's a curious little system that didn't quite reach the same levels of success but still has some fun stuff!

'A back-lit screen that, in many situations, was almost visible.'
Brutal.
I remember playing in the dark while my sister has this tiny light that had to be angled just right against game boy screen
".. and enough battery life to make it almost 1/3 of the way through a 4-hour game."
- Me, from personal experience
**deadpan** "Ya know what... that's fair."
- Me, from years of SEGA-induced cynicism.

Yeah...that screen was ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. LCD's in general did not become halfway decent until the mid 2000's. If you replace the screen on a GG with a modern one, you get MUCH better battery life, and most of the games still hold up today. 2D pixel art holds up much better than 3D. You can get quite a lot of GG games on the 3DS Virtual Console too. I have Defenders of Oasis on my 3DS...used to have it for the Game Gear back in the day and had fond memories of it.
That opening mountain shot though was pretty incredible!
Looked cool and all, but these drone shots are getting a little over done on youtube. Everybody and their grandmother has a drone these days, it seems.
As was Joe's open mouth shot. What was with that anyway?
Clone malfunction.
Joe the Mountain King
Did Joe bought a drone?
Joe's perfect game is all parallax scroling and sound tests.
Sounds like an Amiga demo.
I just want to say thank you for continuing to make videos. Your lengthy videos give me tons of enjoyment, and nostalgia, and i really hope you keep it up. You're one of the few that make me forget the hardships i'm currently dealing with in life, and it's awesome to just forget and watch a relaxing hour of your show. Thank you once again Dave and Joe.
Same here. I've bee watching these episodes over and over since around 2014. They really help to make me forget about other things in life.
The fact that you guys have not only been working together for many years but that you have a real, meaningful friendship comes through on every video. It must be fun working with a close friend. Makes work much more enjoyable.
This aged terribly 😂
Can't get enough of the outros , need a full length movie with these guys
That look Joe is giving Dave at the beginning as he is doubtful of his excitement is pretty funny.
lmao
Joe looks like a Canadian phys- ed teacher. Dave looks like a Turkish bicycle salesman. That is all.
spot on dude hahahahah
Blaine Alexander Shaggy from Scooby Doo, if he enjoyed a wider variety of drugs. But, that's neither here nor there.
Rat Fart - I want your near in my there
Joe looks like Ron Perlman
Mind blown.
19:20 I pictured Joe sneezing out a cloud of white powder when he yelled, "I just freaking love coke!"
they edit that out
Nothing like watching footage of Coca-Cola Kid while sipping on a nice, cold Pepsi.
Hell yeah, I'm a rebel.
*Insert clever comment about how I was doing something vaguely eccentric at 3 am but then decided to watch game sack here*
Phlaco You forgot that you're a simple man.
Also, you should add an obnoxious "Notification squad where you at?!?" into the mix.
Phlaco - you forgot about that time you tucked your meat in your pants and looked in the mirror in shame.
OH BOY 3 AM

I'm watching the whole series in order and I'm surprised about Joe's *apparent* (we all know Joe and Dave are the Sultans of Sarcasm) evolution (not a change: just an evolution) on his opinion about the GG over the course of these 7 years. I had mine back in 1992, enjoyed, loved caressed and finally destroyed it (confound those shitty capacitors!). Bought it back last year (with brand new capacitors... Or so they say) with a nice Everdrive. Never been happier.
This channel has everything one can ask for about gaming. Keep on truckin', dudes!
When I was about 3, Everyone I knew back in the day had a gameboy, I had a game gear. Besides the battery life, I loved it. Sonic, Power Rangers, Lion King, Looney Tunes, Shinning Force. All so fun on this system.
Valin Summers - did you also smoke in the girls bathroom?
that beautiful zoom in the forest with the sega game gear is amazing, i love it
OMG, the hours I spent tethered to a wall socket playing Krusty's Fun House. Nostalgia.

System episodes are just the best! Thumb up before even watching. Gamesack delivers.
I think that if there was one episode of Game Sack that I would say is representative of Game Sack, it would be this episode. Long, in depth, high quality, funny, and a total tour that makes you feel like you know about Game Gear even if you didn't own one.
I grew up playing grindy RPG in Japan. It's normal for me and in fact, when I play modern Western RPG, I tend to overshoot the level requirements and I ruin the game.
Most definitely, that was half the game - grinding through a great battle system.
Phantasy Star 1, 2, and 3 were very grindy. I love that series but the grind when you start a new save was brutal.
@@robintst Phantasy star 2 is BRUTAL whit the grinding, but it's fun
I'm pretty sure 90's JRPGs could cure ADHD
Grinding is so relaxing to me. I have many personal stories where I couldn't sleep or couldn't sleep for days, and would grind in whatever portable RPG I was playing to help me sleep.
This video makes me want to start collecting for the Game Gear again. Just hearing all of those sounds and seeing all of those games really brought me back. I got a launch unit back in my Junior year in high school and played the hell out of it until my Senior year. I haven't touched it since then.
When it's 2am and you need something to watch. Love you GameSack
That opening shot was amazing.
At first I thought that mountain shot was stock footage. You guys go above and beyond.
How damn much I love these long episodes of the Game Sack! Intro and Outro are superb!
That intro doe. I laughed my ass off when the drone zoomed in towards the Game Gear chillin on rocks.
Wow, a 43 minute episode. Love your videos guys. Thanks for all the work you put into these, they are the absolute best on UA-cam.
They really do a good job of making the two week wait for a new episode worth it.
Thanks Joe and Dave, love you both to 16 bits.
One of the finest channels on UA-cam
I agree
Definitely. Well said!
Kinda boring even compared to smaller, less equipped channels. And these 2 have the personalities of Ben Stein and the fucking Pope. Just saying.
This comment has aged well. No, seriously, this comment aged very well.
Defenders of Oasis is one of favorite old school RPGs, mostly because of how simple it is. While very cookie cutter, it does have some unique elements, such as how you level up the Genie, which is done fully by items, and each character having a special move. It’s easy and simple but the music and the grindy gameplay do something for me.
paper castle - Not to be rude, but what the hell are you talking about?
paper castle Too late, man.
I played Defenders of Oasis. It was good.
Coca-Cola Kid v Pepsiman: Dawn of Cola
ja ja ja
Save... Maaarrrrthha!
Gonna bet 50 bottle caps on PepsiMan
thumbs up alone for the nature shot at the beginning with a drone!
Starting at 0:18 I thought Joe was having a 'Nam flashback
lol I thought he was pissed off at Dave trying to talk shit about GG.
Clone malfunction
On the Z80: I helped dismantle one of Zilog's two Nampa, Idaho fabrication plants. I wish I would of held on to the wafers we were able to take home but I had no idea what the Z80 was all about, hell I have no idea if the wafers I had were even related to Z80 designs. We had people from Canon come in to help us dismantle and package the 'chip printers' for shipping. I think most of it was headed to Asia. I want to say Korea, perhaps Taiwan- it was some years ago. Anyways the project was ran by some Italians, and they were super awesome, we drank a bunch of Grappa as the project winded down. Again had I know what I know today... I just wish I could of documented what happened. It was local guys like me from Nampa and an outfit that specialized in dismantling industrial places like a Zilog plant and they were out of Texas but brought in people from across the country. The Canon guys we're really nice, I used to talk to them in my ignorance and they at one point told me that the machines being shipped out of country could of been tooled to make "something" like a 386 or so. I dunno, all I know is a Z80 was mentioned and I'm rambling!
Damn man, that's super interesting!
Holy crap! That drone intro tho....
WTF is with your pfp
Im guessing the profile picture is of them which isnt all that shocking.
Chemo is a bitch...
I'm surprised they left their stuff on a mountain. Any Eagle or bear could've taken them.
@@axelkusanagi4139 and enjoy the power of Sega Game Gear, cannot blame it if there Eagle or Bear attack human store just to get battery.
I look forward to these videos every other Saturday night when I get home. Thanks guys, great episode.
outstanding episode! The drone scene in the beginning was amazing!
The Game Gear was the first system I ever actually owned when I was a kid, so this review was great. I miss my old Game Gear (traded it away years ago), and especially a game that wasn't actually shown on here, which kinda surprised me. No Shining Force 2: Sword of Hajya? I played the hell out of that game. I'm really glad it's one of the ones that got a 3DS E-shop port. Otherwise, I didn't even realize there were so many good games on the GG (I was especially surprised by Sylvan Tale and Batman Returns)! Goes to show how little I had in the way of access to magazines of the time (other than Sega Visions) that reviewed many of the games on it. Great work guys.
The Master System and Gamegear remind me of PS4 and Vita with their overlapping libraries.
Freezetusk
More like PS3/4 and the Vita with the Master System/Genesis and the Game Gear. I'm pretty sure there was more PS3 games on the Vita than PS4. But the Vita was an amazing piece of hardware (and the Game Gear, well, wasn't), it's too bad that Sony fucked it up.
@Marc Carran And most Game Gear games are the same as the Master System versions but at a lower resolution, while almost every non 2D Vita game that was on PS3, let alone PS4, is severily downgraded, so I don't think it's the same case at all for the 2 consoles.
Loved the ending skit! That is so what a 90s SEGA Commercial would have been like lol ... SEGA!!!
Gamesack always delivers quality videos. I love the fact that it reminds me of a video game version of Beavis and Butthead. :)
that panzer dragoon mini is going for a ton now! seems like any game from that series is worth a lot
Poor Dave and his Game Boy... xD
Dudes, lots of effort. Great video!
Bought a Game Gear for $45 in working condition and appearance in 8.5 out of 10 with both battery covers . can't wait for it to arrive!
Holy shit, Dave’s scream. Please work that sound effect into future episodes
It may be 3am but nothing keeps you awake like Joe and Dave talking about the intricacies of the Sega Game Gear.
I remember playing Sonic 1 in the dark even though I could've just turned on the light
Retro Game Players same here haha
Retro Game Players gggggg
well hello, night time game players
Oh man those drone shots in the intro! Too good.
Greendog is the gift that keeps on giving.
Damn, that drone shot at the beginning was beautiful.
Someone probably mentioned this already but there are translations available for so many of the Japanese exclusives including Sylvan Tale.
Joe really loving them drone shots
That closing skit was one of your better ones :D
I find it interesting that GG games tended to aim for realistic graphics - dithering and a smoothed/anti-aliased look whereas GBC games tended to go more for a flat graphics look with solid borders. It means that GBC games seemed "cleaner" but also more "sanitized" while GG games are "grittier" but also more ambitious in what they're depicting.
Great episode! Top notch offerings from Game Sack. I love these Sundays.
Joe is my favorite passive-aggressive game reviewer
Had one of these badboys back in the day. Swapped it for a GameBoy. Not because it was crap (the battery life was atrocious) but because it was so hard to get games in Australia.
I'd read about cool new games all the time in magazines & I couldn't even find a copy of Sonic 1.
It was like being a Vita owner, only now it's so easy to import.
I had no idea people were making RGB modded Game Gears. It looks amazing! I think I'll have to eventually get my hands on one. Great job Game Sack!
While I loved my GameBoy just like everyone else, I have many fond memories of playing my Game Gear on long car rides. Sonic 2 and Sonic Chaos were some of my favorite games.
the rechargeable battery dildo really caught me off guard, that was awesome!
The Game Gear is like one of those things where we compare an old laptop to a current tablet and say "wow, that passed for portable?"
Given it's entirely based on the Master System from just a few years prior, and is even slightly better tech-wise, it's actually impressive how much they were able to shrink it down to even that form factor. But that plus the backlit LCD screen is why it's power consumption on batteries is so rotten. That about sums up nearly all laptops from the time also.
no
Perfect timing. I found a set that included two Game Gears, 13 games (including two on this episode), a case and a link cable, all for $7.99 at a local thrift on Friday. Of course the Game Gears need capacitors replaced but still was pretty surprised to find them like that.
I saved my Game Gear. The sound had turned to garbage. I ended up opening it up, and taking the sound capacitor off, and replacing it with a brand new one, and presto, she sings again!
That introduction shot for the Game Gear and the games was EPIC! Very well done. I miss my old Game Gear and appreciated the TV antenna add on mostly when I was stuck in church. XD
>shows opa opa clearly being hit by the boss
>'hurr horrible hit detection durr'
lol
The Game Gear was a warning that Sega hadn't a clue what it was doing.
Sega also created a handheld Sega Genesis called the Sega Nomad.
damn i forgot all about that lol
Very creative opening with a drone and the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Makes it looks like you guys are working with a big studio budget. Well done.
I'm still waiting for you guys to finally do an episode on my all time favourite video games console ever - The Sega Mega Drive!!!
Such an underrated handheld. I had to get the capacitors replaced but the games that I have were all fun! Some of my favs are Streets of Rage 1/2, Arena: Maze of Death, Dragon Crystal, Aladdin, Ax Battler, Tails Adventure, Land of Illusion, Shinobi I/II, Sonic the Hedgehog 1/2, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, and Vampire: Master of Darkness.
GG Game Sack!
Moogle Midgar gg stands for game gear fukboi
Come on!!!!! we all know GG stands for Good Game :P
Wow!! Some of these games look so good they could have fooled me into thinking they were genesis titles. Pretty blown away, great video guys!
Genesis does, Genesis does, Genesis does!!!! Joe, that shirt is awesome!
Jenovi gai and ugli
It would be a nice shirt if only Sega didn't suck so bad
To be in awe of a video game t shirt.
Anyone who thinks that Sega sucks is clueless and maybe even a sad hater. Ye, some people are like that...
Jenovi iii
Been hanging for you guys to cover this!
Most underrated gaming channel on UA-cam!
One love
It's Shinobi of colour, Dave. Not coloured Shinobi.
Woah
Was that supposed to be funny
I just bought one on EBay, thanks for the video guys much love
Oh yeah, best show to watch at 2am on a Saturday
My brother had a Game Gear, and I had the Game Boy. He always wanted to play my Game Boy, especially after I got Zelda for it!
Game Boy, Same Gear, LINX, three master pieaces.
I grew up on the game gear and game boy had lots of fun with both
Great video guys..keep up the good work. Always a fan.
I LOVED my Game Gear. Looking at this though I think I missed most of the best games.
Re: the outro. I remember back when Nintendo decided they needed more 'tude and their "Play It Loud" campaign with different colored GameBoys and commercials with songs by the Butthole Surfers
Dude, GreenDog is radical! Rock on!
"He can even pick up Minnie items" "He has an unlimited soaply"
Wow, Disney really thinks this stuff through.
Awesome episode. I always wished to own a GG back then but only ever got the Gameboy.
Now I have my own GG, changed all the capacitors and it's now collecting dust on the shelf.
Still love it, though.
As I did the ending skid of this one - soooooooooooo cool!
keep up the good work guys
One major drawback of the GG is that the game library isn't very exciting overall. And the best games are pretty costly at this point. But man, it was a beast of a system for its time.
Oh finally a GameGear Episode - waiting for those fine Sonic Titels - watching it all the way to the end - you dam trolls
Why would THOSE be the ones you'd be interested in hearing about? Maybe the Chaos ones...
Game Sack Sonic 1 and 2 are the two Games I played the most on the GG never played TrippleTrouble though. Played the Sonic Chaos Game back then on the Master. Its generic but the first Games that come to mind for me thinking of the Gamegear.
Ofcourse Im interested in the other Games - its an amazing episode - its one of those you could watch over and over, bravo
Actually never mind - you know whats good - i get that you want to focus on the grat lesser known titels - do it exactly the way you think it should be done
Game Sack, technically not Sonic, but Tails Adventure would be interesting. It's a slower-paced Metroidvania than trying to be a Sonic when the Game Gear doesn't have dat blast processing. :P
If the mini craze isn’t over I’d love a true Game Gear mini. I don’t mean like what’s out in Japan. A nice screen, and maybe a mini hdmi on it.
So weird why the Gamegear doesn’t get more props. Even Dave was giving it some criticism for not sounding as good as the Genesis. Would the Gameboy EVER even be compared to the SNES? Nope I don’t think so.
The Gamegear was far superior to the Gameboy.
So was the Atari Lynx version 2. I had all 3. The Gameboy was more like a fun toy. It has some very good games but it doesn't wow you. The PC Engine was also far better. Shame about the batteries.
Yes all of that too 👍
Thanks to the 3DS VC introducing me to several GG games, I really enjoyed the tiny library available on the system. Happy to see Defenders of Oasis get a mention as that's a hidden RPG gem IMO, but I was a bit sad to see that the SRPGs of the system like Royal Stone, Crystal Warriors and the Shining Trio were all skipped. Oh well, maybe in a SRPG episode
metal gear for game gear
sacrip tex published by Mad Gear
Donkey Kong for game.com
Game gear, a weapon to surpass metal gear
GG Guilty Gear
I'm baffled that you guys haven't done the Game Gear yet! I thought for sure you had! Love all that you do, and always look forward to your videos!
Joe when he wasn't talking he looked like he saw some shit
Your production levels are top notch! Keep it up guys!
I'm not very well-versed on the Game Gear, but some of the games you've shown in this video look pretty interesting! I should probably give some of them a shot, I was particularly interested in SiIvan Tale and GG Doraemon, they look amazing! Batman Returns looks pretty good too...
Also 19:31 Karnov!
Silvan Tale is fucking AWESOME
There are a LOT of games worth getting on the 3DS eShop...
Oh... It would have helped if you were a little more specific though...
I've never gotten any Game Gear game on my 3DS so I don't know...
Not mentioned here are Kishin Douji Zenki and Royal Stone, two of the best GG games.
That drone shot was so awesome. Great work you guys
Awesome video once again guys! Since you've now covered the Game Gear & the Game Boy, maybe it's time for the Atari Lynx :-D
KGRAMR I see your Atari Lynx and raise you an NEC TurboExpress
Well, the TurboExpress would be a good excuse to talk about more TG-16/PCE games XD
I've come to appreciate game sack for their great reviews and self-deprecating humor
You needed a few sets of rechargable batteries for this or you would have become a poor man ...
Very nice episode. I was just playing around with Ristar on the GG(Game Gear) a few days ago. It's pretty impressive to see what they pulled off with it, at least in terms of presentation. I didn't play it long, but may go back to it. Both Shinobi games on the machine are really good.
