How to buy your first guitar:
    1. Walk in.
    2. Say "That one looks purdy", while picking up a $5,000 Gibson Les Paul.
    3. Attempt to play Smoke on the Water in the wrong key.
    4. Pay for it in cash.
    5. Look at their faces.
    6. Don't tell them that you've actually been playing for ten years, and you had saved up for this guitar for years after playing many cheaper guitars and getting good.

I'm a professional cheap guitar player, it's all i will play. Anything above 900$ is not for my style. If I sold all my cheap guitars I could buy a couple American fenders, but I prefer my guitar to match it's owner - a cheap asshole.

I actually went in a store to buy an American Fender but couldn't find one that sounded better than my Mexican one. Haven't bought a guitar in 10 years now. All my guitars are technically less than 800 but i know enough about guitars to know when i have a good one and the bad ones i just sold.

Phillip: Brazil has a massive population of people of Japanese heritage, hence Japanese brand names for Brazilian products. They actually have a national holiday recognizing the mass immigration from Japan to Brazil, and those of Japanese heritage have automatic Japanese citizenship-which is why there is also a massive Brazilian population in Japan.
Both you guys taught me everything I needed to know to walk in a store one day, determined to go home with a guitar, and pick the one that I would be happy with at least as I learn the basics. I went to two thrift shops and a music store that day, back and forth between the three, and ended up with a Japanese stratocaster type ‘Selder’ that has a couple of deep scratches in it but seems otherwise to have been untouched telling by the even layer of stubborn grime and antique looking strings. I kid you not, it was $30.
It needed a lot of clean up, but it’s been a good guitar that I’ve been able to not only learn how to play, but since it’s so cheap I’m not worried about messing something up as I learn how to maintain, upgrade, and repair it. By the time I get my next guitar, I’ll know what I’m doing.

@@bambostarla6259 I'm not sure what today's exchange rate is from USD to EUR in these bizarre times of the global pandemic at present, and I'm also not sure if you're including the taxes and fees you'd have to pay in customs if you purchased a solid-top acoustic in the US and had it shipped to you, but there are *several* brand new acoustic solid tops here in the US for less than 400 USD.
Zemaitis has one on sale right now for $399 from their website and the craftsmanship is amazing. Orangewood has at least 3-4 gorgeous solid-tops on their website (and another 4-5 that aren't solid tops for less than $300). That includes shipping and being set up by a luthier before it's shipped to you.
If you're willing to buy used, you can find a few more, but they're unlikely to include shipping and set up, and here is the US it costs about 100+ to have a luthier set up your guitar properly unless you know someone who can do it for free (a friend?) or you want to watch a UA-cam video and attempt to do it yourself.

Uhuuu Tagjma in the house representing; respect!
As a broken Brazilian guitar player I am the proud owner of a less than $100 tagjma classical guitar that I bought 5 years ago when I knew nothing about guitars. Then starter to take it seriously 2 years ago, learned A LOT while modding it to death and replacing parts (better strings, bone nut and saddle, better jack, pin straps, gotoh machine head, learned how to lower action by filing saddle and nut slots, truss rod adjustment, etc...). Now that I am on the intermediary level I am saving for a steel string acoustic on the $140 price range and dreaming about an electric guitar and bass for $200 each, and a semihollow body on the $450 range, all Tagima!
I didn't have yet the opportunity to play many guitar models but, considering all the reviews I watched I think they are one of the best cost benefit values in the market, ESPECIALLY when you live in a country that taxes to death better products imported from more developed countries, lol.
Looking forward for you to play more Tagima guitars Marty. Your poor Brazilians fans demand it! 😉

I like the PRS SE from about fifteen years ago. The one with the hard tail.
Sounds remarkably like a strat, and the Korean shop that makes them is a world class instrument maker themselves.
Everything from the bridge to the nickel frets to the 100% nylon nut is specced by PRS, then they ship from Korea straight to the US factory, where they are set up by american luthiers.

As a lefty player I had to do my own research and checking out. First, most stores only carry one or perhaps two left-handed options. Second, every shop I have ever went into and started talking about trying to order a left-handed guitar has instantly tried to do whatever they could to not try and help you, except Guitar Center. I've never seen a Samash store nor have I been to Sweetwater but I had to take my own journey, use videos such as yours and Phillips to get teach myself what to look for once I do see a lefty guitar or bass out in the wild. My first guitar? A used Schecter Solo=6 Custom with a SD Custom Custom in the bridge and a '59 in the neck for $300 with a hard case. That's the power of UA-cam in action.

My only advice to anyone getting a guitar for the first time is feel is what matters the most. Try out 20 or so guitars then come back a couple of days later with someone who can play the ones that you liked. A high price tag doesn't always equal a better guitar.

That’s a nice format, I like the concept of “Guitars Hunters”. Keep it going :)
PS: Just one tiny little detail, maybe think about adding a mic on the cab to hear the amp better. (And if you want to keep the “room tone”, you can always mix the SM57 with your lapel mic(s))

an *advice for buyer* (not first time buyer)
If your local shop doesn't have a particular instrument, then just ask if they can order one to test.
It's much less trouble, if something goes wrong with shipping (like i had).
After shipping disaster, i asked guys in the local store to order one and if i like it and there are no issues, then i will buy it.
Next week it arrived, i went to the store, played it and everything was as expected.
    Deal !

I didn't know who you were till after I bought my guitar. Guitar center had stacks of starter kits. Squire and Epiphone. I went with the Epiphone Les Paul special 2. $269 for the kit. The guitar looks and sounds great. The gig bag is paper thin and the amp is tiny. I replaced the amp with a fender mustang lt 25. My son picked a Mitchell $140 guitar and a $100 Orange amp. I am brand new to this. I can't put the guitar down, I totally suck but it's fun learning. 1 month in and I bought another guitar and lots of accessories. I also collect guns, another fun and expensive hobby. At least I don't have to pay range fees or drive out to the country to enjoy the guitar!

I'd say, from a beginner's perspective, ease of playing is REALLY important. If the guitar isn't set up right, which may be true of most low budget guitars, playing it for an extended time will really be painful for your newbie finger tips. Also, as a beginner, their preferences is likely towards guitars that are similar to what someone else they know of and admire plays. At the beginner stage, how it sounds or how to get certain sounds is less important than how it feels and plays. There, that's my 2 cents worth :)

When I got started learning in Guitar a few years ago I started with a Squier Affinity never really enjoyed the feeling of it just felt cheap, but latter on I picked up a Ibanez RGA42 FM night and day, it just felt right, and it's a guitar you do not want to put down, thus it inspires you to learn, and I believe that's what you want, that is also why I rather purchase my guitar at a store then online, I need to feel the instrument

This video helped out massively. Ive recently picked up my guitar after years away from it. I started playing 16 years ago on and off. Didnt really have the time to practise as much as i liked. But now the childre are grown up i have more time. So ive been solid practising techniques and finding my way around the neck more. I think id really like to get myself and electric. Cant afford big bucks guitars. So thank you for making this video marty and phil!

I had a feeling of what I wanted and got a Squier Stratocaster HHS. Yah, its cheap. But I don't know what I'm doing. A few months in and now that I can hear the difference between guitars I would also suggest looking at your Amp, Speakers, and cords (strap included). That way I might consider your full starting budget as high as 350.
Fun sound with a Line 6 Spyder II Amp. Love playing with my strats cheapness, only to still get some good sound. The Line 6 can really help with overdrive, and effects to get more variety of tones.

I wanted to learn. I wanted an acoustic and an electric.
Yamaha FG830 was a great choice for my acoustic. Squier Custom Vintage Modified telecaster wasn't a big hit with me. I've since picked up many others. I still have that tele and a Fender modern player...but telecasters just don't click with me as much....at this point. I'm pretty raw, so I might start liking them more as I learn.

The first electric guitar I ever got was for my birthday, which I still have. It's a Kay that's styled very much like a Les Paul. It isn't bad for what it is. I now have an Elevation which is pretty much an exact copy of a Strat. (Not Strat quality, unfortunately.) I prefer the Elevation because it's easier to play and it far lighter. The Kay model weighs a ton. 😁

  • @josezerpa8177

That was exactly my reasoning when I bought my first guitar, a mexican-made Strat. Richie Sambora inspired me to learn and that's how the natural choice for me was the Strat. After a while I had to get rid of it because its neck radius was too thick for my hand and it was impossibly uncomfortable for me to play for more than an hour. It also went out of tune constantly.
Now I know what to look for in a guitar. It was a beautiful feeling to learn with a Strat but time for me to go into something more adequate for me.

Was first inspired from Ace Frehley's Les Pauls. First actual up close look at a guitar was a Squier Strat. It was red....the year was 1984. The kid that had it played a bad intro of PANAMA...I thought it was the coolest thing i ever heard. Christmas 1985 i got a white Squier Katana, with the hard case. Still have it today. Its a rare guitar. Dont see many around. Anywho...still have yet to get the red Strat.
