    Really well put together tutorial!
    There are some more efficient methods for taking them apart and putting them back together, especially the RF shield, as now you needed to balance the board, the shield and the disc drive all seperated, which may end up with damage to the cables if you accidentally let go of one.
    Another thing i'd like to mention is that please be careful with the power supply board. Especially if you have recently had the console plugged in, the big capasitor will be charged, and if you touch it's solder points, it'll give you a nice big shock.

      Thank you for the insightful comment! I will definitely do a few "dry runs" the next time I make a video about opening a PS2 up, because this is not the optimal or easiest way to go about teardown or reassembly. I appreciate your point about power safety! In this case, I knew the components would be more or less completely discharged, but I think a warning would make sense to add for those who are unfamiliar.

    Awesome tutorial! I ordered a PS2 from eBay and I'm going to refurbish it. You just earned a sub.
    Update: I refurbished and thoroughly cleaned the PS2 (it was the nastiest console I've ever seen). The disk drive runs so smooth now! Thanks!

    Hi. I've just tried booting up my PS2 that I haven't used in years. Everything switches on fine but I can't eject the disk tray.
    I've been looking online for a solution and I've seen a lot of people saying that their disk trays open partly or try to open but can't. With my disk tray, it doesn't even seem to be trying at all. I press the blue button, the light flashes a bit and all I hear is two very small clicks and then nothing. The disk tray doesn't open at all and it doesn't *try* to open either.
    Please, does anyone have a solution to this?

  • @ShimmyX

    For anyone watching this - you really don't need to teardown your whole console to fix this...
    Easier:
    - There's 4 screws on top of the drive unit which can get removed
    - After, plug your console to power, press the eject button, and gently try to get it open and immediately turn power off.
    - there's 2 screws holding the "disk tray" (which is now extended out)- you can loosen them ever so slightly. In the old fat models the overtightening of these lead to a lot of issues.
    - grab a cotton swab and gently clean the laser while you are at it
    - put the cover and 4 screws back and the cover back on
    Check for any debris inside before reassembling in case you can clean it, and check if the moving parts have enough grease to them. Mine has never been serviced and was literally fine.
    Enjoy

      agreed, just take of the lid and then unscrew the 4 screws on the drive top.

    It's reassuring to see you use WD-40 Silicone. I've been losing my mind trying to find out what kind of lube to use, as everyone seems to have different answers. One thread swore on White Lithium, another said it melted plastic... We happen to have some WD already, so I'm glad I can just use that. Hopefully applying it to the open tray will be sufficient, as I really don't want to open it up. Thanks for the vid!

    • @RestoreRevise
      @RestoreRevise  6 місяців тому +1

      I had a hard time deciding, as well. Most of the discourse I was able to find was actually from the vintage PC space, not gaming systems, and I narrowed the options down to white lithium grease and silicone lubricant with that information. I think white lithium grease is only safe for some plastics, so I ended up choosing whichever option I could find which explicitly stated that it was safe for use on all plastics (and, to be safe, the widest range of materials in general). I've used the WD-40 silicone on a few other projects since making this video (mostly other vintage game hardware), and I've had nothing but great results with it.

    Nice teardown video. I've never opened up a Fat PS2 before, and it looks fairly involved. I'm used to working on the slim models. So I'm guessing the guy who'd been in there before applied some really thick grease. Any tips on cleaning the laser aperture?

    • @RestoreRevise
      @RestoreRevise  Рік тому +3

      Thank you! For cleaning the laser lens, most people recommend wiping it with a cotton swab dipped in a 90% or greater concentration of rubbing alcohol. To be extra careful, I'd use a compressed air cleaner on the lens first to prevent any dirt from scratching it before you wipe it. Avoid so called "cleaning discs" if you can; they aren't typically made to high standards.

    • @RestoreRevise
      @RestoreRevise  11 днів тому

      That can be tricky, but you may have luck gently wedging a small, flat head screwdriver under the screw head while turning the screw counter-clockwise with another screwdriver. Hopefully, that will help the screw come up a bit and allow you to wedge the flat head screwdriver a little deeper until the screw is able to push itself out by its threads.

    The disc reader won’t come back up. You said some gears can get out of sync. I’ve tried getting this to function again but the disc reader just won’t come back up when I close it. It’s not broken either. When I push the white bar it goes up and down just can’t get it to do it with the tray. Help please!

    • @RestoreRevise
      @RestoreRevise  6 місяців тому

      Hmm, without taking my PS2 apart again, I'm having a hard time guessing exactly what could be wrong in your case. at 10:26 in the video, I eject the disk tray by hand, which moves the laser carriage down before ejecting the tray. If you do the same thing on your drive, what happens? Is it possible that some part of the carriage has popped out of the track, so it's stuck hanging down even after closing the disk tray fully? I'm wondering if it's something small, and whether you may be able to fix the issue just by moving the piece of the drive that moves first during the eject action (which I refer to as "this white plastic part" in the video) and seeing if you can tell which part of the drive the carriage is supposed to be interacting with during that step. Hopefully this will at least help point you in the right direction.

    When I took mine apart one of the ribbons that appears to be glued or soldered to the board or drive, the blue piece has come off. Is my PS2 shot? I mean I can put the ribbon back in the connector, but without the blue piece, wont it just slide right out eventually? Or would a piece of tape work?

    • @RestoreRevise
      @RestoreRevise  10 місяців тому

      I agree; I would be concerned about that connection coming undone, as well, but don't panic! You could use Kapton tape to secure the ribbon cable within that connector, or you may be able to find a replacement ribbon cable from eBay or a retro supply shop. I wouldn't expect it to cost too much, depending on where you're shipping to.

    • @RestoreRevise
      @RestoreRevise  Рік тому +2

      Before you go through the effort of replacing the drive entirely, I'd see if you can extract the drive, then clean and lubricate it similarly to what I did in this video. If it's really jammed shut because of a mechanical issue, you'll be able to see and diagnose the issue more clearly than guessing from the outside of the system. If you find out something is really wrong with the drive that's beyond repair, at least you'll know for sure that a full replacement is necessary. There are a lot of wear and maintenance components on a DVD drive, though - hopefully your case is resolved with a new belt or some cleaning.

    Do you think it’s possible to re-loop the rails without opening the system

    • @RestoreRevise
      @RestoreRevise  8 місяців тому +1

      You can probably clean and lubricate most of the rail which connects to the disk tray by powering the system on and ejecting the disk tray, then working with what's visible with the tray out. If your system just needs more lubricant, that may do the trick for you, although it's probably best to clean and lubricate the entire rail for the best results.

    • @RestoreRevise
