- Just to re-iterate: We aren't pros, we don't fix PS2's all the time, this will be the only repair video I post.
This is a fat PS2 50001 series or older (apparently). I have only messed with this particular system, I do not know how to fix other problems. Many common problems have solutions posted somewhere on the internet. (This one surprisingly didn't. we basically found posts saying the PS2 was toast if you had this minor problem!). I have faith you can find info on how to get your PS2 cover off elsewhere. Do your best!
I am the shitty camera(wo)man, and the one making fairly useless comments to the side, my brother is the main one talking, if you're going to make a comment about me being a shitty cameraperson or making useless comments at least address them to me not "dude, your camera man sucks!". Or just don't make the comments. I know, but we're not remaking the video.

Right here. Just hooked it up again yesterday.
After about 8 or 9 years, without its box down in the basement it still works perfectly. I left my PS3 down there for about a year and a bit, had to get it fixed. How play station has fallen.

+Turbine68 I *just* re-ordered and received FFVIII (still waiting on the original VII) to replace my older discs. It's surprising how good those cut scenes still look. So, ra ra to the PS2. Also, to my SNES which I'm finally getting the cables for. :p

Just finished your process tadlette and pleased to say my machine now fully operational.Very fiddly job especially the tiny screws and you need a steady hand and right screw driver.I did not test with power until I had back together as I did not trust power going to the laser beam.Probably black tape over beam may be ok but I did not want to risk it.There are warnings inside case about danger of the beam and imply that you should be very careful or risk serious injury. Thank you for this video I can play some games tonight.
I just fixed my PS2 in 2020 . So glad videos of PS2 and cleaning guides still exist.
cleaning out my ps2 from how many dead bugs i knew were in it, and either messed up the tray myself or bumped it while moving homes. thanks a ton for the guide, quick and easy

Quick thing the ps2 50001 series model does not have the screws because sony changed them later on in the ps2 life time so if you have a 50001 it will not be useful. for the people who have a 39001 or something in the 30001's this is a sure way to fix your tray. Great vid

Thank you so much i thought I just got ripped off at a garage sale because of this issue. Turns out people will throw or give things away because the items are in need of a simple fix.
Excellent video! My mom and I were able to fix it within a few tries. Once we understood everything, it was easy and simple to do. It even fixed the thing that reads my CD's. Sometimes the tray still catches but I just press the button again and it comes out fine. 5 Stars!!
Don't feel too bad,I couldn't find anyone on the whole internet who helped me with this problem. I got plenty of things that said if the tray was stuck half open then I was just screwed, but that just sounded like bull.
I don't know anything about disk read errors, so I can't help there, but if you took the disk tray out, you probably didn't put it back in correctly, you have to make sure that everything's back in track, especially the little white knob that we were talking about in this movie

The long-haired boy who was doing most of the talking and pointing was my brother. I was the person holding the cheap camera and adding stuff (you know, the female voice? That was me.) Plenty of people seem (to think that they) understood what we were trying to show.

Thanks for the help. Took me a minute to get the door back on track, but it's working OK now. My PS2 is wicked old (I got it the first Christmas they came out), but now I'll be able to get a little bit more enjoyment out of it.

thanks for this bro. I was fucking around with my disc tray today since my ps2 was having problems reading games and eventually the disc tray was acting up but after doing what you said i managed to unjam it as well as my ps2 having a better time reading my games, somehow
If it doesn't come out then just press the disc tray in a little, then it will open, and close really quick, so make sure you press the eject button before it closes (If you shut down the system you may have to do this a little more but it should work in a few uses). If not, then just repeat if you didn't get it the first time, but it's pretty easy. If your disc tray doesn't open by doing this, listen to these guys, if that doesn't work, take it to the repair shop all freakin' ready.
That was my problem. That lever thing wasn't in its proper slot. This video helped me figure it out.

Never put something on top of the laser lens.
Aww man, fixing that is a pain in the butt. People call it different things like 'the power ribbon cable', or 'the power/reset cable', or 'that silver ribbon cable'. Let me see if I can find the tutorial I used to reconnect mine.
yay! thank you so much, this worked for me ... my PS2 is a slightly different generation than the one you show, so I didn't have the little screws to undo, but the same little sliding white piece with the knob at the end that needed to go into the track on the tray ....

We just fixed a problem that we had, and posted the vid b/c we hadn't been able to find a solution online anywhere and had to figure it out on our own.

thx i've done it! it was little bit easier than you explained. I just removed the 2 screws, and nad the tray. pushed the whithe pin to the left and mount back the tray. worked out

Hopefully people will do this fix instead of the incredibly stupid one that some guy posted, telling people to lubricate with cooking oil

I meant to add that hitting the top of your machine while pressing the reject button is not a good idea.You could easily damage sensitive computer parts and it will be the end of your machine.

I gotta admit, PS2 slimline is a lot better, as it doesn't have a tray. My old PS2 screwed up to quick, and i didn't treat it like shit, just started to ignore disks and the tray went really slow. Slimline is way better, but it does heat up and the back where the mains adapter goes in, it gets really hot after playing for about an hour...
Pretty much anytime you force your tray to do anything or you take it out, it can get off track like this

I don't know, but it sounds like a reader problem to me. Do you hear it spinning the disc after you put it in? Like I said I'd guess that it's either an issue with the disc reading laser or with some communication connection in your system
you still have ps2? cool i want 1 back... i wish i could go back in time... before downloadable content and having to pay for everything online

woo found out the little white hook was broken so i glued it after years its finally fixed
like, you can't undo the screws or the tray wont go out? If you haven't opened it or forced the tray in or out in the past, then your problem probably isn't the same as mine was.

part2. so i put the top drive case back on, and put the console cover back on, screwed it in. and it now opens... it still doesnt play ps1 tho.
@hliu376 You can buy some parts online and what not, but it may be better to get it professionally repaired (presumably they have the parts) or to replace it
huh. i opened my ps2 today because it isnt reading ps1 games anymore. ive opened it before to clean the laser and stuff. so i did it without opening the tray and tried opening the tray whilst open. and it would get stuck at like 1 inch and go back in after 2 seconds. with a lot of fiddling around i managed to get the tray disattached to see if anything were catching it and to put it in the right path. after a long time i managed to get it back in. and it still wouldnt open. part1
.... Oh yeah if the repair people can't fix it, just get the slim version for $99.00 at Wal-Mart.

I opened my ps2 and the part that aligns with the track (the little white cylindrical piece) is broken off at the very end. I have no idea where it went and if i replaced that I think the drive would work fine. Any suggestions on how to fix it? -- or what i need to do so -- Thanks

It did, in the sense that I attempted to fix it. What happened specifically to mine is the disc would keep ejecting out, I just tried cleaning it up, and then putting it on its horizontal side, and it worked!

@@Disimba no only the first time and then the second time i attempted to fix the tray to eject it
Unscrew the screws,flip it to the front take it out easy,then unscrew the sqaure,
My friend gave me his ps2 to fix and that little white notch has been broken clean off.. know any place i can get a new one?
I know when my PS2 would get the disc read error, I would open it up and clean the little eye with something. It has been many years so I cannot remember what I cleaned it with, or if i just simply blew on it, But the eye being dirty is usually the cause
Also, you only get effected by the laser when it's on... That kinda dropped some legitimacy points for me as did the part where you repair did not work.
i can help you i got a problem as well my disktray wires which were connecting to the ps2 broke and i need to know which wire has to where.
My disk tray won't fully come out. It's like it's a tiny spanner has been wedged inside that little white cog! (Or something else that could be stopping it.
