Premier Guitar (www.premierguitar.com) is on location in Chicago, Illinois, where PG's Rebecca Dirks visits with Kent Eriksson, Meshuggah's tech for guitarists Fredrik Thordendal, Mårten Hagström, & bassist Dick Lövgren. He talks about their current live setups including signature 8-string and 7-string Ibanez guitars and Warwick basses, and how each member uses the Fractal Audio Axe-Fx.

It's painful to read all these comments mocking the guy, when he's clearly just a shy guy who's not used to speaking in English nor doing interviews. If you've ever seen Meshuggah live, you'll clearly know that he's doing his job flawlessly.
+Niamorg1007 His English is almost perfect though.
In Sweden people speak like 4 lenguages
It’s all in good fun.
English sucks
These guys are the pinnacle of extreme metal without all the glam and theatrics like some of these silly pseudosatanic bands. I wont call names, you know who you are...
To all of the people who are criticizing his English; I'd love to hear what you sound like speaking Swedish.
It always blows my mind when people who only speak on language criticize people who can speak multiple languages.
I worked for Blizzard Entertainment for 10 years. I learned how to insult people and tell them im going to masturbate in 17 different languages. Thanks World of Warcraft, jag ska runka nu
I can speak swedish im from sweden
Sorta facts
well it's english, not chinese. and swedes learn it in school from age 7 as a second language, so not realy an excuse *shrug*
The guy (Kent) speaking is my best friend since childhood and an amazing guitar player in my band and, yes, swedish.. The "Yeah yeah" is actually just an direct translation from how we speak in sweden.. Ja ja!! And he knows more about guitars than everyone. THAT´S how he got the job!!
This is not an insult, but wqs he tought by james from metallica, because Yeah yeah?
I called out his name at a meshuggah gig in Australia he gave me a wave & seemed happy I knew who he was 🤘🏽
He's a freaking legend then. I saw meshuggah live and it blew my mind that their arms don't fall off with exhaustion
Why does everyone who is even remotely working or affiliated with Meshuggah look like the could kill bears with their bare hands?
swedes.
Goddamn Vikings
Vikings bro. Meshuggah themselves are beasts. In Flames too for the most part.
NORTHERN swedes
@@LeviBulger Whom are extinct.
you can't blame him man!
If I worked for Meshuggah I would be saying YEAH! the whole time as well
LOL
reporter actually asks good questions!
Really. These are the things we want to know!! Well done.
Rebecca Dirks is a legend, everybody loves her. Sadly she no longer works with Premier Guitar.
did not know that ... hopefully she is still around the music scene!
100%
Beauty and brains.
I fucking love this tech.
Anyone who has seen Meshuggah live will know and understand WHAT A HERO THIS MAN IS!!! Skål \m/
I normally drunk, but they always sound amazeballs. This guy helps them to sound even more sick than they would anyway.
A true meshuggah guitar tech says "djesss"@0:18
lol
+mkfanforever58 hi
+Fieldy Znuts Didn't see this until now. Hi.
tiasunep aier yg
To all you who don't get the whole "yeah yeah" thing, in Scandinavia we say "Ja ja" if someone asks a question and we agree or if we give permission for something.
For example: "Can I borrow your lighter?" "ja ja" or "So he uses the same pickups in this model as Fredrik does?" "Ja ja"
Hope that clears it up a bit for those who don't get it :)
My world started making more sense
ja ja - makes sense
Jexactly what i thought, yeah yeah yeah :D
Robert everybody gets it they're just not used to it
It's been a decade and this to date is still my absolute favorite rig rundown
The chick is good, she's asking all the right questions, killa!!
How do you play an 8 string guitar ? I mean what kind of chords do you do ?
BadRonald1 8 strings allow for a 3rd E if you want it to be played more like a piano
i love how his first work is YEEESSS and then followed by YEah Yeah lol
I personally feel that she doesn't know anything other than just typical questions. She also just points out obvious things like "he's muting the strings."
MetalMulisha210 thus is the case with a lot of "piggy-back" businesses
Great guitar tech. Can't even begin to think how difficult it must be to manage all of that in Meshuggah.
i love how he imitates the sound of the delay.. 16:40
He doesn't look unprofessional to me. For one English is not his first language, he even admits it, and second considering he keeps a band like Meshuggah up and running you gotta give him credit for that. Guy does his job, what else is there to say :p
exactly. its not like these guys are actors either, theyre not always going to be the best on camera, and thats fine. its not about him anyway, its about the guitars, those damn fine guitars.
Who said he did look unprofessional? And his english is fine.
If you see them live, you'll understand. They put on an incredibly tight stage show. All that programming really makes it happen for them. Their light show is also controlled in Cubase, which is perfectly sync'd with their songs and interludes. And as artist, they've decided that they want to play their songs like they sound on the record every time. If you can automate that, then why not.
I agree that it's pretty robotic, but I think it's just the kind of band they choose to be.
Their light show is not synced with Cubase though :) it's a whole world for itself!
Interviewer is stellar and you can tell she's a legit guitar player because she knew what she was talking about without rehearsing. As a female musician and guitar player, its inspiring to see other females who can do what dudes do in music, if not better. Glad I watched this! P.S. I heart Meshuggah
Swedish people are so nice and humble, very nice to meet.
His English sounds better than many who speak it as their first language. Freakin' people on those teen mom and honey boo boo shows need subtitles. Great Rundown!
Hilarious with the ya ya ya's....but such a nice dude... and considering the fact that english is not his first language, dude speaks well......
yah, it is a thing from scandanavian and prussian regions, yeah yeah, it is, yah, ja ja, we agree :) kind of like how indian sub-continent people sometimes shake their heads side to side - it is a way of agreeing during a conversation
"yeah yeah" (x42)
more like yah yah
its normal to say in swedish but is funny when used in english lol
+Nikolai In arabic it's normal too! Except we say "eh". Heheh.
But you have to deduct the "no no" from the "yah yah" so the actual number is lower
Roy McCraney "ja ja rå. jo för fan. ja ja." basics in swedish.
I blew these guys off for a long time, never really gave them a proper chance,
but man I am obsessed with these guys at the moment, I don't know what the hell I was thinking
It can be an acquired taste so your comment makes perfect sense, but yeah, gods walking amongst mere mortals
"Das duh Yapanese virgins off days geetar"
These are beautiful guitars by the way. Black flat finish, black hardware, 8 strings.
I've been thinking hard about the M80M. . . I'm currently playing an S970WRW, that I love.
they just released Thordendal Signature FTM33, it looks better
If John Petrucci had one of these as a signature they'd sell like hotcakes. Instead he has that abomination the Musicman Majesty which looks like crap!
Forever will be 1 of my favorite rig rundown. Not only does Rebecca do a fantastic job asking the questions giving their tech the time to answer, but bonus points for his Entombed sweater. Long live Meshuggah!!
"I am Meshuggah's tech, ya ya ya"
Would you say that you say use the phrase "Yeah, yeah, yeah" way to much?
Oh ya, ya, ya.....way too much, ya, ya, ya
Lol i am Lorde ya ya ya
Well it has been a pleasure talking to you ya,ya,ya? *Oh shit, now he's got me doing it*
5:15 "Nope, yeayeayea." - What?
Saying certain words twice is kind of a swedish thing actually. Hejhej, tack tack, nej nej.
Nils Jonsson I was just about to mention that, I always notice Swedes doing that. Their English is usually impeccable though, the extra words just come as a bonus hahah.
+Nils Jonsson We norwegians also tend to do that! Like ja ja or well well is really common for us
Yeah yeah of doom
+Nils Jonsson I think he threw in a few triple and quadruple yeahs too, lol.
lherman22 Whenever in doubt, go quadruple!
I saw Kent in Houston and he gave me a guitar pick too! what a nice guy! I love all of them, amazing people at one place!! it's a magic in universe!
Kent honestly seems like the kind of guy I would want to invite to every party, he seems like he just radiates positive energy everywhere he goes.
Take a shot each time he says "yeah"
Have fun xD
no
*dies*
Playing right now, 3 beers down in 4 minutes....
Martin Maxe 3 beers in 4 minutes with so many "yeah"'s?
Pussy sips.
I did that and woke up after 3 years
I think it's called being shy.
No its called being from Skandinavien
This guy is the best guitar tech I've seen. Not only is he humorous but he knows everything he needs to know and more.
hermosas guitarras, hermosos bajos, hermosos equipos, gran entrevista, grande meshuggah!
Ya ya ya
16:42... i watched it so many times, but I still can't stop laughing XD
Eyyong, eyyong, eyow-- ..sound.
Yeah yy-yeah.
Thank you...
This was a long time coming. Been waiting for this rig rundown. Thanks to Premier Guitar for finally making this happen (and that they actually spelled the Swedish names correctly, umlauts, diacritics and all.)
Going to see 'shuggah this May in Stockholm and I am so looking forward to it.
Just started listening to these guys. Respect
I think she forgot to ask the most important question: does it djent?
+João Ferreira It's 2015, that joke was funny 4 years ago
Lag?
João Ferreira Lag?
+João Ferreira yeah yeah yeah
How can a band like that NOT djent?
To me, the hot thing, while true, isn't why I miss her. I really thought she was the best person they had for these Rig Rundowns.
An actual good interview of a band's gear.
Swamp ash is always amazing to go with :) It's extremely good for brightening up heavy output pickups, while remaining light.
YA YA YA,
Interviewer - Custom?
Ya Ya YAA YA
I am Meshuggah tech YyaYaya
Yaya
Hahaha
+Axel Karlsson heheh
good summary ^^
I was looking for this comment haha "ja ja ja" lol
Yayaya!
He should be the Yeah Yeah Yeah's guitar tech.
Such innovators with metal tone. They were always ahead of the rest with their ideas of tight/clean djent tone. They've definitely championed that sound.
Very good Interview he's doing an amazing job
This guy is lorde!!!
"I am lorde, jajaja"
Yeah,Meshuggah is that rare band that live sounds just as good if not better than their albums.I've seen them live 5xs.Beyond heavy.
Seems like a totally cool guy, I definitely can appreciate how technical it is to function as a band like Meshuggah, playing one’s instrument well is only the beginning!
This guy makes this the best rig rundown in history
She knows about guitar gear and stuff, that's hot
To quote the tech "Yeah yeah"
Hotness Level "Yeah"...
Until she asked him if the two guitarists play in the same tuning lmao 5:32
@@B3Band it is possible for two guitarists to play a song in two different tunings, although not likely in most situations.
@@B3Band you literally commented the same thing twice lol hope you at the reporter are on good terms by now bro
I actually thought he did a very good job of explaining the setup, considering how complicated the amp/effects units are. He's running an automated system using Cubase to run through the set and change the parameters in three effects units on each song, and it's all triggered automatically (I'm guessing using time-based switching).
That's a pretty damn hard system to set up, so big kudos to him for doing it, and if I can understand it after one explanation his English must be pretty good.
Rebecca Dirks is amazing!! brilliant questions/knowledge and looks all good too......
Very organised. Dream job for sure.
Crazy AXE FX setup! The automatic interchanges are just crazy!
how does the computer know the song has finished? Maybe after a period of time preset for the end of a track's setting, it auto switches to the next track's first setting, ready to go? But.. how would it know the start of the track for timing for switching to the next setting? I swear the guy is just confused and he's actually using the 'B / F' midi controls to switch, but he is not considering 'he' is switching it 'it's laptop controlling!'. Meaning he is not pushing the button, he's pushing a midi button to make the laptop push the button lol. My guess anyway.
They have a backing track (synths, and the drummer has a metronome in one ear), this backing track is on a timeline, where you can set keyframes, that trigger certain switches..
The drummer has to use a metronome, because of the backing track, which is pre-recorded, so the backing tracks START and STOP at the right time.
They don't push anything during their live shows.
So it is being triggered by a kick midi trigger perhaps, or a foot pedal by a guitarist or something? I figured there must be something to trigger by a human, too risky to try to do fully automated, as if you will start each track in a set at the exact same time each night :)
No, it is triggered by a PC running ableton or Cubase or whatever they use.. The track playing triggers the stuff..
It is FULLY AUTOMATED, they have a backup, maybe even a guy looking at the PC if something goes wrong..
It has become quite a standart technique
Tomas has the click in both ears! ;-) Try to have it in one ear and play dude! Yeahyeah
"But...Gibson said nooo" :)
Love this guy and I love Meshuggah's gear. This video is full of win.
The Chicago show was phenominal. Always a treat
watched meshuggah last night and he came on stage and i could not stop saying yeah yeah
Entombed! That hoodie is sick
"Yapin-ese" My gf speaks that all the time.
i laughed so much at this
He is so swedish, it's bloody hilarious! xD
You win
+Kelly Jackson Robbaz older brother confirmed
Ja ja. Kamelåså.
This dude is really dope. Makes me wanna get into Meshuggah.
Love their gear, fantastic👌🤘🤘🤘
9-70 gauge strings? They must play very djently.
+mrthompson878 The guage is light for how low the tune yes but because the neck scale is longer naturally the strings are tighter. Thats why they use the guage they do.
But the scale lenght is closer to a short scale bass at 29.4". And the dr strings are high tension... The Only thing i do not understand is the need for a low F.. that is the bassist domain..
I play drums in low tuned bands with 8 and 7 strings and learnt something from this about the neck lengths and the gauge of the strings. My guys use strings that are like bits of rope on the 8 strings. The 7 strings nearly have the same gauge as the Meshuggah 8 strings. Now I know why it all works the way it does and probably why so many guitar players find some of the Mesh stuff like Bleed so hard to pick! Bits of old rope VS bits of angel hair = normal band VS Meshuggah.
All those flamers here should learn swedish as good as he can speak english, then they can complain.
I don't really think there's any hate there, it's just kinda funny
Ya, ya, ya.
These are the most gorgeous instruments I've ever seen. Ibanez can really pull off magic when they put their foot down on QC.
Meshuggah is one of my favorite metal bands, always have been and always will be. Plus I love their accents, I think it sounds cool as hell :)
MESHUGGAH \ m /
How many times does he say "yeah" in this video?
one-hundred and sixty-seven times...
Jonathan Caban Can I take your word for it? :') so that I don't have to count to see if you're right? :')
Sure mayne, I have a tally sheet :D
More like "Ja ja" lol ;)
There is a video with only the yeahs somewhere her on youtube
Ibanez needs to go into production with that custom Firebird/Iceman.
Yeah yeah yeah...
Oh god, how I miss Rebecca, she was such a good interviewer
Old 7-string songs use Bflat as their tonality, while 8-string ones use F mainly.
The 4th string for bass and the 8th string for guitars share the same octave, F1, and that's what they use on the new material.
The 5th string is Aflat0, so he is able to go a full octave lower (Bfalt0 from Bflat1), as you would expect from a bass on any other band.
yehyehyeh
Fuck yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeah!
That dolphin is rare. I have a dolphin pro 5 string with regular string spacing but have always wanted one like this. 👍🏽
10 Years gone and what can anyone say? God bless Premier Guitar
yeah yeah yeah
yaya. So what tuning does he... YAYA.
The whole thing about the computer is amazing. It's one thing for a band to keep in tempo the whole time, but for them to be able to just have a computer, which doesn't account for error, change their Axe Fx settings, it shows how good of a band they are.
Love this guy's accent; he sounds so authoritative, yet warm.
tech's main inspiration the yeah yeah yeah's
MechugachugachugachugachugachugachugaCHOOCHOO
aww, the ye-ye-guy, from the "shuggah-crew! I had seen this video years ago, and then I forgot of it, and then in a few years I thought about it, but somehow did not find it on youtube. I'm happy now yeye
amazing set up!
Yeahyeahyeah...
Grinned so hard when he said Yapan.
Swedish doesn't have the English "j"-sound.
Fully aware, 'tis why I took such glee out of the pronunciation.
iamMobius1 lol yapanese
The tech looks like he's a lot of fun, mad set-up !
I definitely wouldn't say that they're cheating. The effects processors that they're using just takes the place of effects pedals. These guys are amazing musicians and songwriters. I'm not that into the whole death-growl styled vocals but the way they incorporate polyrhythyms is remarkable
yehyeh
Are you even a tech? "Yah yah" You're hired
really like the Entombed hoodie dude is wearing
Cool dude, good run down.
Nothing on Fredrik's breath controller?? :/
Yo!
He stopped using it years ago.
I dont like the band but that signature guitar is quite intriging
is just not all of it, but i stay in meshugash, but a slip mesh copilation should work fine.
I love this guy. He needs to have a radio talk show.
Its one of my favourite Meshuggah albums :D
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Man give the guy a break. English isn't his thing. Him doin his job as a tech is his thing. What if someone showed up at your job and started asking questions in another language? His job is to make sure all that gear works, not talking to some girl explaining it all.
Very nice. Good job!
The firebird 8 string is so beautiful!!
Stoneman! FTM33
9 to 70? WHAT! I play 13 to 65 on a 6 string.
Michael Borg heavier strings are only good for lower tunings. otherwise they're too hard to bend and tiring to play.
Maathiu Ra Yin I tune low bro.
Michael Borg on a super long scale length only a have step down. longer scale lengths allow for lighter strings at a higher tension
yeah I use 84 or 86 low on my 7 string, but I wouldn't go higher than 11 for the highest preferably. I try to go for a progressive tension rather than balanced, around 24 pounds on the low to around 18 ish on the high. I've used 13 highs before but unless you tune the high string quite low it will probably mess with the overall tension across the 6+ strings. I also use Circle K aka Kalium strings because they have a higher tension for the same gauge compared to other strings. I've enjoyed using Martin Bluegrass resonators previously and never really liked the sound of D'addario's, however in the late 90's they were the only easy way to get 80-82 gauge guitar strings. Sometimes buy the Zakk Wylde 70/72 boomers (I think they are 72 I forget) because I see them cheap sometimes in stores. Everything depends on the tuning you play in, I was doing weird tunings since I first started playing so I've experimented a lot with all sorts of odd and illogical string setups just to see what would happen.
You also need a higher action generally to not buzz all over the place, which is my bane being a heavy gauge guy for low tunings. I still kind of enjoy the opposite aesthetic also still though, 50-60 gauge strings for lower gauge with a floppier/bendier attack. The pitch bend can be interesting depending on the style of music and with certain effects/distortions. I remember being quite impressed with the sound of a 56 low string power chord detuned to D# or C# down an octave from standard, sooo floppy it sounded kind of unique.
So Randy Marsh is a guitar tech now....
+Ralph Dreijer He didn't mention hunger games...
Yaya
I was at this show! Meshuggah with Animals as leaders and Intronaut! so good.
Anyone who gave this guy crap has to remember that Meshuggah is Swedish. Also I liked how honest he was, cuz really there's way too many technicalities to point out for their set anyways, and he probably didn't wanna bore people.
