- Watch Daniel Bergstrand mix the bass tone from Meshuggah 's "Future Breed Machine" off their 1995 album "Destroy Erase Improve."
He uses the original multi-tracks including a DI and amped tone in Pro Tools going into a SSL console for EQ and compression.

NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, The Contortionist, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These aren't bogus covers played by some nobody off of UA-cam, these are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Architects, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, A Day To Remember and State Champs - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!
1995 guys, 1995. Insane album with a monstrous sound
Circa 1997-98. a friend put this CD in my hands - changed my life!
@@judas_saves mine too.
04:47 When the bass enters, holy shit. What a beast of a bass tone
The Darkglass tone before Darkglass was even a thing
Yep, I'm pretty sure their current bassist's using a darkglass vintage microtubes preamp now. He used the darkglass tone for koloss and violent sleep of reason. It makes the bi-amped metal tone so much easier to achieve. We used to have to record a dirty amp and clean amp signal and blend the two together, now you can get that sound from one little box and not even need to do any editing in post
I really wonder if Darkglass' B-series distortion was inspired by Meshuggah.
Then it's not really "Darkglass tone" is it.
@@BeardedDanishViking you have a tenuous grasp of conversation, don't you?
Their bass sound is insane all throughout their discography, so brutal.
The sound that he shows at first didn't really convince me but the mix you hear at 5:18 with the drums and bass only was absolutely perfect, and they should do another video talking about the drum sound.
I like how aggressive and intense it sounds without having to clip every track!
They shoud totally re-release DEI with this version of the mix and call it "Destroy Erase ImproveD". lol
NO.
😏
Hahaha
Jeezus that's a nasty tone. Love it.
its fucking insane isnt it?
Wow, compared to the original master, this fills out the lows / low mids so much huger. I wonder if that was a mastering thing with the original or if it's due to this being mixed with our 2017 technology. Love you guys URM
It was probably just a lack of knowledge of how to mix a guitar tuned that low. So it'd be "safe" to take a lot of low end out of the guitars because the bass will carry those frequencies and it'll avoid mud. But I agree, most Meshuggah mixes are way too thin.
I like how DEI sounds, i think it's their best sounding record
I'm not sure if it's just about the low tuning, because other bands at the time who also used 7-strings and/or de-tuned the shit out of their guitars like Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, suffocation, cryptopsy, etc sounded heavy as shit. I think DEI and Chaosphere just have no bass whatsoever and that's their biggest issue. It's like they applied a high pass filter at the 100 hz mark. When I listen to those two albums in my car, my subwoofer barely moves any air at all unless I crank it. The kick drum is practically inaudible. When they mixed the album they were probably using a cheap speaker system and couldn't tell the difference.
@@howler9171 Morbid Angel, Suffocation and Cannibal Corpse weren't really tuned that low during the 90's.
@@BeardedDanishViking Morbid started using 7 strings in A# from Covenant onwards, and CC started using 7's in the same tuning around 95 when chris left and george joined
I think Peter Nordin was playing a Spector bass on this. After leaving the band (due to inner ear issue) he sold the bass, if I remember correctly. That had a lot to do with the tone as well.
Nah, there's a video of him playing bass for a PDP song and he uses the same bass
yeah he still has the same Spector.
Looking at the video's out there ( ua-cam.com/video/k61FOVH_Aac/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/MaR0bJYWwaA/v-deo.html ) he plays a a Spector NS-2a. Not sure if the bass is modded preamp and pickup-wise, but those Kramer-era NS-2a's can sound really gnarly with the high's boosted.
The 1k on the bass really opens it up.
Jeezus that’s a beautiful sound
This video is such a gem
See how drums can sound so good and aggresive with good drumming instead of samples????
I hate samples!
lol. I've listened to grooves recorded to midi and played back with SD3 and not noticed a difference. At all. Very thin line we're on nowadays.
@@barfyman-wn3id of course I've done it. some people can pull it off nicely but now there's a lot of producers who even make things sound robotic in purpose. It's a trend in modern metal.
I'd love to get the individual tracks to this record. It's been a dream of mine since like 98. Will this be released at some point?
If you join nail the mix you'll get access to the raw tracks. Check the link in the description!
I don't think either replacement has come close to Peter Nordin in terms of tone or his right hand, tightest metal bass player of all time.
Meshuggah has had this kind of bass tone since ‘91.
Every mixer:
"The [...] sounded really good from the beginning, no doubt about that. BUT...
Fucking filthy sound.
beast
Fuck. That's how you use distortion on bass..
Just release the remix! 🤤❤️
You dont hear these tones these days. Incredible
Sounds almost like my EQ while i listen to Meshuggah. The Bass tone sounds like a freaking tiger.
Daaaaaaaaaaaamn
4:37
"Soul Burn" intro is an ideal showcase for "DEI" album bass tone.
Didn't know Sami Zayn is really good at mixing!
1:20 just making a note for future reference
3:50 - 4:00 fucking Tomas, man. jesus christ.
anybody knows what amp what used for the distortion? sounds perfect
Hartkey 3500 and a Digitech GSP21 for distortion.
@@PNordin thank you so much!
@@lemmykilmister1239 you realize that the person who answer you is the actual bass player of this song?
@@ignaciojauregui7423 yep! Isn't it amazing?! The internet can be such a beautiful place sometimes
@@PNordin Would you happen to remember, which GSP21 distortion mode (Rock Tube / Metal Tube / Overdrive / Heavy Sustain) or preset was used?
CLUMPSEEEEE
Anyone knows the name of this song please? It was nasty as f.
BakinBooms thank you dude !
How to mix a boat motor. 0:45
It sounds like shit alone but in the mix it sounds amazing
I prefer the original, more dry mix of the song. He does a brilliant job, still.
that would be CheVelle
5:00 🤢🤮
sounds like another guitar one octave down. not bass.
dead end it’s totally different and you bugging
