Precisely!! Always been my thoughts 💭 as well for almost my 25 yrs in playing/in the business. Lol sometimes I need a better tool for the job, or just need to clear space, only been a VERY FEW pieces of gear and guitars that were actually part of my sound.

I had this Spector bass for years. It was my first Spector, I used it on a bunch of recordings and shows. I liked it so much that I ended up buying another one of the same model that was in a different finish. I put the same pickups and preamp in there but for some reason the new one just sounded and played better. I ended up using the new one 90% of the time while the OG collected dust. It was hard to part ways with it but when I finally got my Euro 5 string I had to sell the OG one to cover some of the cost. It was hard to part with, but the person that bought it seemed super happy and excited about it. That made me feel a lot better knowing it was going to a home that would appreciate it. Sometimes letting go of gear can feel really good (though its hard to do)

You’re not alone man, I just listed my 2021 Les Paul custom Silverburst that I bought brand new a few years ago. First question everyone asks me is if I’m gonna “regret” it and I have the same answer as you. It was my dream guitar, plays perfectly but it’s lived in it’s case the whole time. I didn’t have any musical needs for it so that’s why it’s sat around for so long. Gear will come and go, you just know when it’s time to move on from something

Oh yeah Kyle I definitely understand! I've had to let some guitars go over the years. At one point I must have gave away (yes gave away) about 20-30 guitars.
My higher dollar guitars that I've connected with or even not so high dollar at some points, like my Les Paul Tribute and I have connected big time. It's hard, really hard to let go of something that I've connected with.
I've gone back to guitars later and realized I didn't connect at one point but did later in life. Then I was happy that I didn't get rid of that particular guitar. Ooh those choices can suck at times.
More importantly, I'm so glad to hear that your dog is doing well.

A black beauty Gibson Les Paul was also my dream guitar since I was a teenager. BUT when I was finally able to afford one, it took me awhile to get the one that I could really bond with. Had models from the mid 1970s through the 2000s and they were all different. The one that finally ended my search was a 2010 1960 anniversary model Historic. Not cheap, but wow - the feel and sound that I go for are all there in that particular model.

I've never sold any of my gear and never will. As someone with not a lot of money every one of my gear purchases was a calculated decision, everything guitar related I've ever bought I did a ton of research on beforehand and was 110% intent on keeping until the end of time no matter what. That goes double for guitars, each of them bring me to a very specific point in life (circumstances, relationships, bands etc.) and have a lot of emotional value for me, I'd go bankrupt before selling one of them.

I feel ya. Currently contemplating selling a 1980 cherry sunburst standard. The body, neck, and hardware are late 70s stock, but the pickups are stamped 1980; as is the serial number on the headstock. It was well worn when I got it in 1993. It's been refretted by a pro, and, I have put a lot of touring miles during my time with it… but, oddly it's time to let it go. I've got two classics that I'm really enjoying these days … and that's when I'm not playing a Gretsch or a strat

i just sold all my amps, cabs and one of my fav guitars to get me a new standing desk and a good ergonomic chair to help deal with my back pain and got me a new guitar that fits my current needs better. Not a single regret.
I had to think about it a few days before i decided to sell them, but now that they're gone and the new stuff is coming in (just my les paul is missing, that will arrive here this week) i really do not miss the guitar or any of the amps. Especially stopping to play 100W tube heads with 4x12s live did wonders to my back. now i just carry a Quad Cortex and a Stage Monitor and my 2 Guitars. I can grab all that in a single walk from the car and have no back pain at all.
My Learning: Selling gear you never play to get somethiung that adds value to your life is always worth it! for me at least.
Also Thank you kyle for the nice Talk on instagram, you're the best, i wish you all the best!

I bought a Jackson back in 1992 brand new.
I sold it in ‘95. I regretted selling it. Then I found out that that particular model was only made in ‘92 & ‘93. I was a Dinky STD Professional. Everything was color matched. Deep metallic red body with matching red dot inlays, pickups & knobs. I finally found one in like new condition that was in my price range and bought it. Like you I had things to pay and sold it and it took me 28 years to get another. Do what you gotta do man. There’s always more.

After longing 20+ years for a MIJ Ibanez JS1000, I stumbled on one in great condition last summer. However, after 3 months I decided to let it go because I could not get used to the small fretboard radius and medium frets. I was used to flatter fretboards and jumbo/xj frets, so I always felt like I was fighting with the JS. Same thing with 2018+ Ibanez S670QM guitars. They are gorgeous, lightweight, and ergonomically amazing, but I've never been able to get the action low enough without dropping the tremolo so far into the body that it loses range.

I have 10 guitars. If I’m being real with myself, I only regularly play about 4 or 5 of them. Really more like 3 are played routinely. I love them all, but I feel bad when they just sit there. I could stand to get rid of a few. I probably won’t right now anyway, but I can at least reconcile that 10 or less frankly needs to be my cutoff point. I still get GAS for sure, but once I get to this point I make myself trade some gear in at my local shop if I’m going to acquire something new. I have a few I regret getting rid of but whatever, the point still stands that I generally was not playing it and like you said, just simply having it to have it isn’t a good enough reason to keep it for me.

Absolutely understand. Taking it further in that direction, one of my least expensive guitars, (a PRS se), never connected with me from day one. Something about it seemed ….off. Some tweaks like a new nut helped, but just didn’t cure the situation. I’ve thought about selling it dozens of times, but here’s the kicker: everything I have recorded with it sounds great!!!! Easily. Without much tweaking or eq’ing. Ugggg. Easily as good or better than others 3 or 4!times the price. Friends tell me I’d be nuts to let that go.

Selling my gear (guitar or drums) is virtually impossible for me... Way too attached... For example, out of multiple guitars, the one I vibe with the most is a 2019 Dean Thoroughbred... Although its a nice guitar, its still a Dean and itll never be worth to someone else what its worth to me... But... Would I sell my gear to help my dog?? 1000% I would trade ALL of it to help my pooch... Great work, KB! 🤘

I think the most difficult thing about guitar buying, especially expensive guitars bought online, is that no matter how much you think something will "work out" and that particular guitar will be one that you bond with, you just never know what you're getting yourself into. I bought a 2016 Les Paul Custom and I spent a LOT of money on it. When it showed up at my door and I held it in my hands I was overcome with joy. I finally did it! I got my dream guitar! But then over the course of months I started to notice that I was NOT bonding with the guitar and I have been extremely hesitant to sell it because of WHAT it is. I kept kicking myself and feeling guilty for not loving it. I have 3 other guitars, each of them are at least half the price of my LPC and they play, sound, and feel better. And that bums me out. But regardless of whether or not I sell the LPC, one thing is for sure: you just never know what you're getting until it's in your hands.

I just spent $750 on a pretty cool Paul Reed Smith I'm going to have to give it another go because it was shipped to me in standard and I should at least put it in a tuning I normally play with thicker strings to try it again but if not I might just have to sell it because I got it at a good price and there's no point in letting it sit collecting dust since I also have a decent size collection and the only guitar I ever regret getting rid of was one I purchased from the band August Burns Red and it was used to record their first EP

I'm in the same boat. I have an 89 LPC in classic white. ( Rare one with black binding) I have owned it for 30 years but over the years turned into a Strat with humbucker type guy. I prefer the ergonomics and longer scale length. But I know I will never have another LP if I sell it.

I'm in exactly the same place with my SG Custom. I bought it during the pandemic for a good price and it was my dream guitar. Like you with LPs I've had many SGs and although it's a great instrument, I don't really connect with it. I've also found the cost involved to actually be a barrier as well. I won't play it live, I'm always worried about damaging it and I believe guitars are meant to be played...and this one mostly isn't. I've realized I'd better use the money tied up in it elsewhere. Lastly I just don't think any guitar is truely worth many thousands. My USA Gibsons play and sound just as good so you're really just paying for the idea of a custom shop instrument which isn't worth it to me.

I’ve let go and sold some gear over the past 10+ years and have probably regretted letting go of maybe three pieces. I’m content with what I have now (a Gibson LP Trad Pro V in Blueberry Burst, Fender Jazzmaster in Lake Placid Blue, an Ibanez GIO blue chameleon my gf got me for Christmas) and these I could never part with. Are there more guitars I’d like to get for other needs like heavier hardcore riffing? Sure, but whenever I get something new now it never feels like it’s the one I need. There’s just some gear that clicks that you’d never let go, some you use for specific needs, and some that you may honestly be okay with letting go; I guess it’s always up to everyone what they would want to keep either as a collection or for the actual love of it

For the most part, guitars and amps are tools for making music. I keep them until they either aren’t working for me anymore....or I get something in a similar vein that I like more.
I have played enough now that I know within 10 minutes or so if an amp or guitar has the tone and feel I like and will be a keeper. When I younger and also alot poorer, I would always play around with eq's, different boosts, gates and pickups to try and get what I had to do what I wanted. There is obviously something to just focusing on your playing/song writing and making it work with what you have. But being a tone chaser I have always looked fornthe greenest grass and have the luxury of being able to buy/sell/trade to get exactly what I am after.

I collected close to 30 guitars since the pandemic. All Gibson, Fender, and PRS. I end up selling or trading all of them. I then bought myself 3 custom shop electric and 3 acoustic guitars that I constantly use, my 2 favorite amps (Friedman BE 100 Deluxe and a JCM800 2203) and my Quad Cortex. I have one Fender PJ Bass. For me these days it's Custom Shop or nothing.

Kyle, I have been a collector of good quality guitars for about 30 years. I only recently carved out enough time from my schedule to become a halfway decent player. At one time, I owned about 30 guitars in my collection. They brought me much joy to sit back, and just look at as an art form. Kind of like a voluptuous woman. You just love to look at them. However, as I’ve gotten older, and my playing has eclipsed, my collecting habits, I’ve realized that I really only need one guitar of each type to cover all my sonic values. Therefore, I have whittle down my collection to 10 core guitars that I play every day. Anything else is just superfluous

I keep a main, and a bacc up. That's all I need. I bond with both so, I usually have 2 Basses and 2 Guitars. However, I like to try new things and I have a open mind so, I do accept gifts and I do review gear and accept gear sent to me free of charge. To stay in me collection the gear in question must bring something to me table. I buy for Sound and to use them. Usually if I let go of one, it's to upgrade to one I know is better for me style. To permanently stay in me collection, or be me main, it must be able to shred. I don't bond with weakness. Also if it has severe issues like horrible necc dive, I look to fix it if issue has a reasonable solution, otherwise I trade it in on a superior Axe that doesn't have same issue. I bond with quality. If it doesn't have quality that meets me desire and I no longer play it, it's just a Tool that helps me acquire the ones I really want. This of course applies only to me purchases as I'm more lenient on gifts or free stuff sent to me to review or just given to me. I enjoy free stuff as much as anyone else. Many Times I've chosen gear over $ as me fee or payment. There's much gear I look forward to trying what I haven't had opportunity to try yet. Currently I'm in the delightful position that I can legally play whatever I want and experiment with any gear I want so I'm using that Freedom to try new gear and give Newschool stuff a chance to see if it shreds or if I can acquire some endorsements. I'm not buying 50 Guitars from a company that refuses to endorse me or refuses to make Signature Models for me. To me, this is a Highway not a 1 way road. Good video, good Topic, these are just me opinions. To each dey own, Have a good day 🤟

I like money that can be exchanged for goods and services but I grow super attached to guitars and amps.
I go back and forth for ages before I make a sales post, sometimes change my mind and pull the listing just to relist it again a month later and finally sell it. It's hard with amps but nearly impossible with guitars for me because yes, I too feel like they have a soul. I think I have only ever sold two and I have been on the fence for years about selling my white SG Standard Limited for the same reason you are selling your LPCs. So, you are not alone but I am probably not a good benchmark for sanity

It funded another instrument that suits my needs and taste more and ultimately it was worth it. I’ve been through a ton of gear over the last 15 years and the only thing I ever truly regret selling was a 1985 USA made BC Rich Warlock. If you don’t have any crazy attachments to the gear you already don’t play much it shouldn’t hurt to let em go

I haven't ever had a high end guitar, not even an Epiphone, but I've got a 78 Gallan Les Paul, a Japanese copy, which I will have to sell so I can get by as this month's payment at my job is not going to be enough.
I'm praying because I really don't want to sell it, even if I don't play it much.
But the time I get every single guitar I tell myself that if I have to sell them, I won't hesitate.
The last guitar I would sell is my 7 string Ibanez since it's a gift from my family.

The timing of this video lol. Just sold my Ltd acoustic today. I had it 4 years, but it’s sat in its case for the last 2. I sold it to a friend who routinely does acoustic shows so I actually feel really good about it. It was meant to be played.

I played a Gibson LP Standard for 15 years, but eventually sold it, vowing to never buy another Gibson - I found Mexican made Fenders, Far East Schecters and Charvels etc, felt just as good at a much lower cost.
However, over time I did miss the single cut shape and weight. I feel "at home" playing a Les Paul. Last year I picked up an Epiphone Old Glory and fell in love. I used to be a badge snob - Gibson or go home, but now I'm older and wiser (well, that's debatable) I'm happy with a well made Epi.
As for regrets, I only regret selling one guitar in the past, purely because they're expensive now. 1998 USA Richie Sambora Strat with the active boost circuit. Cost me £1155 in 1999, they're around £4k for a decent one now. I'd rather have 4x £1k guitars though...

I don't like clutter/stuff I don't use often. Other than seasonal stuff, I'd better use it once a month or it's on the short list to go ASAP. That goes for gear & anything else. I don't enjoy the process of selling something, I'm not a salesman at all, but if it's not being used, I don't need it taking up physical space.

Always had 1 guitar for like 14 years. Then started buying more and got up to 17. Then started selling trying to get to 3. I realized the more guitars i had the less i played. To much time messing with all of them. So i stick to 3 now. A floyd, a hard tail, and a drop tuning active guitar.

Never thought I would say that coming from Shredder guitars my whole life.....But you're right, there's something special about how Gibsons sound and Play, it doesn't feel cookie cutter, it feels hand built, I love little blemishes and Dings here and there, because I know it's MY guitar, and feels like character.

I have over my years owned many guitars, a few were nice but mostly cheaper models from every brand. Once I started making more money I got rid of all of them. I now own four Jackson USA, two Mustaine Gibsons and a very nice BC Rich. Problem is I do not play as much and sitting on 20k in guitars doing nothing. I think of selling them but dont "need" the money. So its a delima. The biggest reason I dont want to sell any of them is that the prices keep climbing and it would be harder to replace if I change my mind.

Common issue... I grew up poor and I guess I like having things of value .... I think about what I own and what I should be thinking about selling or trading off daily ..... I own more guitars than you admitted to having and have likely owned upwards of 300+ over the years... My cell phone has folders of the different brands I own, the different amps I own, the ones I have sold or traded off.... Yeah your not alone.... But i also tend to keep some stuff as trade stock for the times I find something but don't have the money to buy it.... You have so much it is difficult to think of something to offer for that 1980 Norlin Custom which I truly want! Lol

I was just thinking about my regret of selling my '71 Pro-Reverb like 15 years ago!). I would run it with my '68 Super Reverb and man, what a fat and big, loud tone they gave me. Each did what the other couldn't. Oh well, at least I still have my SR and recently added a '68 Leslie/Vibratone, so that's kinda cool. 😏

I want to sell all my guitars... keeping a B-stock HB Ex-76 BK... Witch, I painted neon green, put gold and black hardware, on, and then reliced it. I also made the zebra pickups. I left the headstock stock tuners and all. My idea behind keeping it was. I feel comfortable on an explorer, so I should get good on an explorer. They're going to goodwill one at a time I don't care about money.

Crazy how different we all are with our taste in gear! I have a '79 LP, also alpine white that I really only keep for sentimental reasons. Actually, it is the ONLY piece of gear I have kept for those reasons. For me, I am huge PRS guy; they play, sound and are built exponentially better than that old Norlin Les Paul.
Yet I have friends who go ga-ga over that old log and don't like my "soulless" PRS's. Lol! Like I say....always amazes me how different our tastes can be!

I have a similar story with not loving a guitar your poured money into.
At the time, 8-string Majestys were really hard to come by. Then one day, one came in stock at Sweetwater and BAM I bought it outright. After two weeks with it, I realized how much I just couldn’t get down with the guitar. Yea, it was top notch, but definitely was not for me.

It seems sad to spend thousands of dollars on a custom guitar just to not bond with it. I know what you mean though, I have a few guitars that I immediately vibe with. I doesn't even need to be an expensive premium guitar. I found a 2001 Squier Affinity 20th Anniversary Strat for $80. The second I grabbed it, I fell in love with the neck. I have modded the hell out of for about $200 and it is one of my favorite guitars. I would never sell it.

I've sold only a few guitars in my life and the reasons were either they weren't very good guitars or, in the case of my PRS Custom 24 SE, was a nice guitar but just wasn't for me since I'm really not a fan of floating tremolo systems. Right now I probably have 2-3 guitars I really need to sell but nothing the caliber of one of those Les Pauls. I should quit being lazy and get them sold.
At least you don't seem to have a pedal buying problem seeing how you pretty much just use overdrive pedals. Getting into all that and building pedalboards is probably not a good idea unless you can control yourself and build one good board and leave it alone.
