How to handle and tame a chameleon

  • Learn some tips and tricks for how to tame your chameleon and make them comfortable with handling.
    **This is advice I’ve learned from my own experiences. No guarantee these tips will work. Also, chameleons are solitary animals and it’s not in their nature to try and bond with humans. If a chameleon walks on you it’s because they trust you enough to not eat them.**
    .
    ➖Be patient ⏰➖
    It took consistently working with Neptune for 5 months before he showed any interest in handling. And the first time he walked on me I held my arm out for 20 minutes.
    .
    ➖Work at your cham’s pace ⏳➖
    Don’t force or rush your chameleon to be handled. Make baby steps and move at the pace they’re comfy with and recognize that some days they just need their own space.
    .
    ➖Don’t pull away if they get defensive 👹➖
    If you pull back/give up when your cham starts to get defensive, you’re conditioning and rewarding them for that behavior. Pulling away will train them to believe aggression will get them what they want... Away from you. Leave your hand there until they calm down.
    .
    ➖Leave their enclosure open 🌲➖
    Let them have the chance to explore. Soon they’ll associate you with getting to come out. Try placing a plant, branch, or tree to encourage them to explore outside the cage on their own.
    .
    ➖Give them treats 🐛➖
    Hornworms did the trick for Neptune. I started with putting them on a branch, then tongs, then my hand, then my forearm, and then my elbow which forced Neptune to have to climb on me to get the worm.

    My veiled runs to me every time. I was cleaning the bottom of his cage and he climbed on my head ! Lol he gets on me any way he can every single time I'm there. He's super friendly and is never stressed. He's soooo cool . 5 mos old .

    For anyone who may have a frightful chameleon when it comes to them not wanting to come onto your hand, what I found to work with most chameleons is holding a cricket near your shoulder while they see it, and let them take the time to walk onto you to come get the bug, as she has said in the video.

    I have a 2 month old chameleon he’s been in my care for almost 2 weeks now. He ha began to tolerate me handling him. I believe the first time I kept my hand in place for about 10 minutes when he lost interest in me sitting there I withdrew. It eventually led into him becoming hungry and he decided he wanted to explore so I attempted the handling again using mealworms and was successful he ate 3 out of my hand. Awesome experience btw. Then he proceeded to crawl up my arm onto my face😂

      YAY! Sounds like you worked at his pace which is exactly what you want 👏 Food is a great motivator. However, I would avoid feeding him mealworms in the future since they are not very nutritious for chameleons. Neptune the Chameleon, I don’t feed him as a main source in diet those are his treats for the time being, his main diet is medium sized crickets feeding on calcium rich food and gel tabs, but these awesome reptiles are as you said very advanced looking forward to all the learning curves I have thrown at me!

    Took mine a couple weeks before he started walking onto my hand on his own. That being said, he also ate from tongs and the cup in the first few days of having him. I have a certain cricket cage and it has these little things that the crickets crawl in and then I dump them in my chameleons cage and he eats them after a little while. He might be starting to trust me a little bit but I don’t think so cause every time I walk past him even if I don’t look at him he seems to get scared.

    I just got a chameleon on Monday and am so glad for your advice, I have been trying to figure out if I should feed her or hold her or what! Thanks for your feeding video too, it helps to hear it from someone who has healthy and trusting chameleons and not just pet store clerks! Mittens my chameleon loves hornworms and supers, but Ive been giving her supers as her primary food and cricks only once a week per my pet store's suggestion. Should that change? She's about 7 mo, panther

    I have a few questions. I just got a 3-4-month-old Panther chameleon about 3 weeks ago and I was wondering if you think now would be a good time to start trying to handle him. He is still a little scared of me, when I go into his cage to put his feeder in with bugs he normally walks away or hides. I have been keeping the door of his cage open (with my supervision) for small periods of time so he can be more used to being in the open. He normally stays at the back of his cage anyway. I also wondered about lights off. When you say lights off after 12 hours of them being on, does that mean the room his cage is in must also have no light on? I look forward to hearing back from you :)

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  2 роки тому

      Sounds like he still needs a lot of time before you should try to handle him. Listen to his body language and work at his pace. His room should also have no overhead lights on at night. A TV light or computer screen light should be fine.

      I'm not sure what kind of chameleon you have, but here are the desired humidity levels:
      Panther chameleon - 50-70%
      Veiled chameleon - 40-70%
      Jackson's chameleon - 60-80%

      not miiles Please give your chameleon at least 2 weeks to settle in. After that you need to take things wayyyy slower. Just try sitting next to their enclosure or leaving the door open while supervised. Putting your hand near them is a big step and you have to make baby steps before trying that.

    I recently got a baby veiled chameleon. He doesn’t seem as skittish as alot of chameleon videos I’ve seen. He eats infront of me with no issues and seems to be happy the two times I’ve lured him out of his enclosure . Would you say it’s ok to continue to take him out if he seems to like it? I haven’t noticed any eye closing or signs of nervousness when he isn’t in his enclosure. My thought is that if he likes it and I continue he won’t be as aggressive as some videos I’ve watched. But my worry is that if I’m wrong he may get stressed out from over handling

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  9 місяців тому

      I'd take it day-by-day and just keep an eye on his behavior. If he seems chill, go for it! I'd just try to limit it to 2-3 times a week and make sure he still has plenty of time inside his enclosure so he still gets his UVB etc. And if he starts to show signs of being scared then you know to back off and respect his boundaries :)

    I have a Baby Veiled Chameleon, I'm currently not taking him out unless I have to (for cleaning and such) so I don't stress him out too much, but whenever I do it's always a pain, I always go from under, but he won't eat worms or any critters that I've tried out of my hand, so it's even harder, any other tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated, I will try the free range method, and hope that works. Last question is, is not taking him out when he's younger, and waiting till he's older a better option, then to try once a day or every other day to take him out.

    • @NeptunetheChameleon
      @NeptunetheChameleon  2 роки тому

      I actually wouldn’t even take him out for cleaning. I’d just clean around him. And it’s better to start working on trust and handling when your chameleon is ready which for some is when they’re young and for others it’s when they’re older. Start which just hanging out by their enclosure and go from there :)

      Definitely try to limit handling to no more than 1x/day 2-3 times a week. Sometimes chameleons will be eager to come out of their enclosure if there isn't something quite right about it, so as long as your enclosure is set up properly, you may just have a friendly chameleon :)

      I'm not sure if any of these are safe, but just make sure they are non toxic in general and that they aren't very sappy. I would recommend plants like ficus, pothos, majesty palms, umbrella plants, rubber plants and yucca palms. These are plants I've kept in my chameleon cages and so far haven't been a problem. I hope this as helped, and it's always nice to try new things, some chameleons (like mine) dont like to eat the leaves of a plant, so even if the sap is harmful it won't be a problem, however, veiled chameleons tend to like munching on leaves so I would be cautious.

    I heard you reference the thoughts of others regarding what might be going on in your pets head..... This is troubling because you are the one that should know more than them what ever his name is thinking. Look up pictures of the brains of Killer whales, sperm whales, dolphins. thats interesting, well then look up an octopus and its brain/nervous system and the things it can accomplish. We are notorious in thinking that just cause it is different somehow its WAY TOO different.. Simply not true!
